DOES PHONSIE THINK THAT THS BLESSSED SACRAMENT IS A CURE FOR COVID?

Who’s the geezer the night dress

Up until about four decades ago the Irish were a very superstitious people.

Their faith was rooted in Holy Water, rosaries, statues, relics, holy wells, fairy thorns etc.

My granny believed that touching a priest’s hat would cure headaches and dinking the tea left in the bottom of a priest’s cup was prevention from colds and sore throats.

That generation believed that priests could cure illness and even raise from the dead

They also believed that a priest’s curse was the end.

A relative of mine, a lorry driver, crashed into the local PP and killed him. Three weeks later a gas tank blew up in front of him and blew off his two hands. He saw tgat as a punishment for killing the priest.

There is nothing all all wrong with a certain amount of emotional devotionionalism. But it cannot be the all.

Is Phonsie hankering for the past when the clergy were the mega wizards?

I believe in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

I believe in the possibility of Eucharistic miracles.

But the Eucharist is not a magic wand.

And the Eucharist is a symbol of faith and love. It inspires, especially in times of trouble.

But what does carrying the Eucharist around the streets of Waterford achieve – a city in which the majority do not attend Mass?

Maybe it FORCES THEM to see are still here.

Is that not a sign of a not knowing what to do?

The answer being: “Lets have a Eucharistic Procession”.

Is it not a time for Catholics, inspired by their faith, to open food banks, set up neighbourhood schemes for the old and infirm, obey Covid rules.

As well as to say their prayers and worship.

Jesus did seem to favour praying in your own private room?

Is Phonsie lost, I wonder, in post Catholic Ireland?

Processions with the Blessed Sacrament are deeply rooted in Catholic culture for centuries.

If you believe that Jesus Christ is really and truly present in the Eucharist is not the most natural thing in the world to bring the presence among people who believe?

The Eucharist is not a magic wand but Catholics believe it is the Divine Presence. The faithful are comforted by it – especially as they are unable to attend Mass.

It doesn’t have to be interpreted cynically, Pat. In your own way, you’re as bad as D’arcy in how you wrap absolutely everything around yourself. The only right way of viewing the world is through your prism.

Maybe the bishop of Waterford, who is clearly a devout believer, is just trying to comfort the people of Faith in that city?

Everything the man does, of course, is judged by you on account of your umbrage that he took exception to you coming to Holy Communion at a funeral. Even though, very loudly and proudly, you claim to be no longer in communion with the RC Church. You really can’t have it every way, Pat. Get over your prejudices against Bishop Fonsie.

In the Anglican Church it is against canon law to lift and move around the monstrance during, and for purpose of, liturgical worship – however the monstrance can be placed upon the altar with the sacred host therein.
She still does Benediction at Evensong, though. Father is very relaxed like that, she has a lovely chasuble with golden threaded tassels 🤣 x

This kind of antic by Phonsie is a rearguard action on the part of people like him – bishops and priests – to reclaim some kind of relevance. It’s definitely a “look at me” tactic ! For all the pious talk they will come out with about bringing the presence of the Almighty to the people, what it really is about is trying to put themselves and their influence at the centre. If I was God, I’d be pissed off with them using Me like that ! Also, don’t Phonsie and his type realise how cringe making it is in this day and age to do this kind of thing? Ireland is not that kind of country or culture anymore, we have moved beyond and above this kind of thing. If they want to make themselves and their message relevant again, then I suggest Phonsie and his pals start talking about integrity, honesty, and transparency, and lay off the duplicity, posturing and lecturing that has been the mainstay of their pitch for too long. What a complete Plonker Phonsie is !

Here’s more of the arrogance and presumption of the Church and its bishops – especially the Polish varient: https://www.thetablet.co.uk/news/14043/polish-church-welcomes-police-regret-for-intrusion They have gone all out to push for an apology / explanation from the Met, when in truth they should have been humble enough to accept that there was enough there for the police to be concerned, and to have just accepted that and moved on. But, oh no, they have to push all out to show they they are right and to humiliate the police. I would suggest that there will be some payback from the Met at some stage. Revenge is a dish best served cold. What this story really tells is the arrogance and aloof presumption of Catholics of this type, who are not used to being told what to do because they have for so long been glove in hand with power – as they still are with the fascist Law and Order Party government in Poland. Well, they had better get used to the new dispensation, because those days have gone in this country, and no special privilege is given any more to the Church and these entitled Christians. Times are changing…..

Yours @8:47 am is a very different reading of the situation from mine. The Polish community has engaged with the police and the Archdiocese in an admirably courteous and positive manner, which builds up good relations rather than destroying them. Nobody has screamed “victim”, torn down statues of Sir Robert Peel, smashed up the neighbourhood, or claimed any kind of special status. Good for Polish Catholics: you’re very welcome in messed-up Britain. And I’m sure Priti Patel agrees.

Like

No they haven’t ! They’ve just moaned and complained and made themselves out to be victims – Catholic victims and Polish victims. It’s all about victimhood. Don’t you think the Met have better things to be doing than checking up on Catholics at church, so just keep to the rules and stop thinking you are except or above the law, which Catholics like this do. Same with the traddies, like the Oratorians. I bet they are still doing communion on the tongue and kneeling at the altar rails ? Who the f**k do these people think they are ? They are just like that twat Phonsie parading through the streets with his lace queen by his side, thinking that they are so important. Nonsense. The Muslims and others are showing a better example than these Catholics, Poles, Traddies and Parading Bishops. And, as for Priti Patel – well, nasty little dwarf she is, and poacher turned gamekeeper in the way she talks about and treats migrants and refugees, given that she was one herself. She has the usual immigrant politician backstory of a Dad who ran a corner shop or drove a bus. When people showed her welcome, should she not be showing welcome to some of the most destitute and needy people who turn up on our shores, rather than her begrudging, nasty, bullying behaviour and words. Nasty Conservatives.

But I’m reminded of comments on a previous blog some time ago. The issue was about how many RC clerics really believe in transubstantiation. I certainly don’t. And I noted at the time the tepid response from the “believers”, both lay and clerical.
But then that’s customary when matters of faith belief are being questioned: another mystery?

That’s nothing to the bizarre ideas Irish Catholics get when they move elsewhere. I have had (in England) elderly Irish women tell me quite seriously that God hears the prayers of the Irish more than anyone else 🤣, and a younger woman, who really should have known better, tell me it is de fide to believe the shroud of Turin is Jesus’s actual shroud.
The fact the faith of so many people is built on superstition and misinformation would go a long way to explaining the state of the church in Ireland today. And as usual it is the fault of the clergy who really should be stamping out this nonsense.

@12:09: When asked to explain faith, religious believers are invariably flummoxed and reduced to parroting vague references to their own personal feelings and beliefs.
Of course: it’s a mystery!
I believe faith is merely a cloak for aspirational wishful thinking focused on indoctrinated beliefs which provide comfort to the reality of our relatively insignificant existence. It is mainly perpetuated by transmission to young impressionable minds and incorporated into consciousness together with the social conventions of communal living.
You refer to faith as a great gift.

Walking around the streets with the blessed Sacrament is ludicrous, the streets were empty anyway and the Catholics, certainly in Ireland, have long ago seen “behind the veil” when it comes to the Roman establishment and it’s Babylonian clerics. It is NOT a pretty sight…
I believe in the blessed Sacrament being exposed, on the altar, with use of a small and modest-like monstrance for quiet prayer time including group prayers. Anything else seems a bit OTT to me – but that’s just my own personal opinion and I respect others who may think differently.
… Crossing-up abuse one day, the next, wandering the streets all-the-while waving around the blessed Sacrament… it’s flawed before you even try to justify any of it!
Is this phonnsie character two sandwiches short of a picnic…?

I am sure other readers will remember that after Vatican 2 Eucharistic adoration fell out of favour for a time – the accent shifted towards the Eucharist itself. I remember being told that adoration (particularly perpetual adoration) had had its day as expressing the theology of a particular time when people didn’t receive communion much. Of course this change stretches back to Pius X’s promotion of frequent communion.
I just think return to adoration is a step backwards to a previous age.

Like

It was never called Adoration it was Exposition and very rare outside of convents. The Forty Hours was the annual preparation for Corpus Christi and at no other time. Adoration is a Pope John Paul invention and is usually a 19th Century monstrance on a corporal with two gutted wax candles usually led or began by a lay Eucharistic Minister in a sparsely populated church. I see Bishop Pat is very particularly about having the tabernacle veiled in the Oratory which is rare in England.

Like

Adoration of The Most Blessed Sacrament is for all ages, it is only those who don’t believe and like to think that their particular theology, which is not the theology of The Church is a step backwards. A few days ago you posted about the child with athiest parents whom you gave ‘spiritual food’ to. You mentioned how the partenst were not best please but it was what it was.

If a person is selling food and nobody buys it the seller sets up free taste stands. If people are not coming to church for spiritual food, ought we not also offer free spiritual food, just as you did yourself? To some this is preaching the word from a butter box on the street corner. For others it is processing with the eucharist to remind people of Eucharistic Adoration.

Might I suggest that both you and Phonsie have much more in common than either of ye realise.

I absolutely applaud Bishop Alphonsus parading the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of Waterford. But, the said same bishop is content to let the hypocrisy of Abbot Richard Purcell of Mount Melleray Abbey go unchallenged in his diocese. We know from this blog last year that the allegations were brought to his personal attention. He did absolutely nothing about them. And, sadly, that makes Bishop Alphonsus like the rest of the Irish bishops — a whited sepulchre.
If Bishop Alphonsus had real moral courage I would applaud this action. Instead, he indulges in glib cliché-ridden pronouncements redolent of a theocratic gerontocracy. And, that is why people see absolutely no value in the teaching of the church to the detriment of us all.
