IS FR GER FITGERALD REFUSING TO MOVE FOR FINTAN MONAHAN?

Clerical sources in the Kilalloe diocese are claiming that Fintan Monahan asked Ger Fitzgerald to leave Cloughleigh parish over the female sex incident and that Ger is refusing to move!

Fintan

Furthermore, rougher elements in the Cloughleigh community are backing Ger and telling him to stand his ground against the bishop!

If this is true, it is a very challenging situation for Fintan.

If he lets Ger away with giving him the two fingers it destroys Fintan’s authority with all the other priests. Authority wise, Fintan is dead in the water.

Thats a very bad place for a bishop to find himself at the beginning of his episcopacy. Fintan is only 50s with 20 + years to go as a bishop.

If he stands up to Ger he has quite a battle ahead:

1. He needs to suspend Ger’s faculties immediately.

2. He needs to order Ger to to vacate the church property in Cloughleigh.

3. If Ger refuses, Fintan then has to go to court to evict him and send the Garda and baliffs into Cloughleigh to effect the eviction.

Cloughleigh is a rough estate where I imagine the Garda are not welcome.

Imagine 20 Garda and the bailiffs evicting Ger in front of Cloughleigh’s “best”.

There would be a massive riot.

Ger has spent years gathering the Cloughleigh crowd around him as his fan club.

FINTAN’S BIG TEST:

This is a big test for Fintan.

It could decide his whole future.

I do not wish this test upon him – foisted on him by a lecherous priest.

THE WOMAN:

In fairness, it has to be said that Fintan, the diocesan secretary Fr Nash and the diocesan safeguarding officer Cleo Yates, have acted very well with regard the woman in this story.

They have met her.

They have believed her.

They have offered some very practical support.

She herself, acknowledges their goodness and help.

I have been dealing with women involved with priests for 30 years now.

This is the best treatment I have seen for a woman by the diocese, the bishop and the diocesan staff.

PRIEST WHO MINISTERED TO ANOTHER WOMAN

Would the priest who commented on Thursday, saying he had ministered to another Kilalloe woman please make contact.

Even with Fintan, please.

Cloughleigh is not a parish it is an Oratory the Parish is Ennis.
Where do you see Cloughleigh mentioned in the Group of parishes.

Get a grip, he’s anything but a good priest, he’s been a bit too beloved by too many. He has to be suspended a divinis immediately. If he refuses to go call the Guards to remove him from Church premises. He is a disgrace to The Sacred Priesthood.

Not one who sleeps with vulnerable women.
He is a disgrace to himself and sadly to the sacred priesthood.
He should go now while he gets the chance.
If he is challenging his Bishop who he took vows to then he is in big bother.
Vow to obey me and my successor so Willie Walsh may have ordained him but it is Fitan Monahan’s Dioceses.

It was actually Kieran O’Reilly who ordained him. And he’s a no nonsense guy who would have suspended Ger by now. He was an absolute autocrat who ran Killaloe to the letter of Canon Law. People used to complain Kieran had no personality and was politely cordial with people. Fintan is like a county councillor out greasing palms, kissing grannies and babies and going to the opening of envelopes. Just sometimes shows the showman isn’t always the bestman when it comes to dealing with issues.

I agree with you about Fintan I have seen how he acts and maybe be okay as a Bishop’s Secretary although clerics should not be Bishops secretaries they should be in parishes.
Archbishop Kieran O’ Reilly maybe asked to go and sort this mess out by Rome as Fintan seems to be dragging it on and on.
Ger should have been suspended weeks ago and more so last week when he admitted it.

There are to many able Bishops to be promoted like Denis Nulty, Fintan Gavin, Michael Duigan and Martin Hayes they would have had Ger well out by now.

Denis Nulty has made big changes to the funeral liturgy with it has all to be within the context of the Liturgy and you have to save the rest for the Crematorium or the wake.

Ger Fitzgerald is a fool if he is challenging a Bishop especially at 40 years of age his cards will be marked for years to come.
He has more chance winning the Lotto than beating the Church.
Has he no real Friends to advise him to just go on a retreat and contemplate his foolish behaviour.

Tim Dolan of New York has been on Facebook the last few days talking about traditional practices which are of course important when they express someone’s interior disposition. The focus yesterday was on beating the breast. It put me in mind of the quote from one of the sermons of St Augustine in which he mentions the echo in church when the people would beat their breasts during the liturgy. In the very rural part of south west Ireland where I first experienced church people would say ” we have enough craw-thumpers”. As scripture says “let your hearts be broken not your garments torn”. If Fr Ger doesn’t feel his sexual experience goes against his priestly vocation then he should just acknowledge his struggle and its consequences. Continuing his ministry with courage he could embrace the new moral freedom and credibility that it will bring.

Like

Dolan is a joke. He was rector of the North American College (NAC) in Rome when the VEC had to close down until it had sorted its problem with Legionnaires in the showers which killed a priest. The NAC hosted VEC seminarians who enjoyed sleeping around with American beefcake. The problems in his own seminary were just as bad as anywhere, though at least they were wise enough not to camp it up in public.

Like

Dolan isn’t to be trusted cos he moved monies that was designated for victims of abuse to a cemetery fund unreachable. That was when he was a Bishop who replaced Weakland in a different diocese.
That’s probably why he was promoted to cardinal. Also some of his other actions as regards to abuser priest which cardinal o malley reported him to the Vatican.

Deny, Deny, Deny Ger, there is no proof against you. refuse to move on the grounds that it would be an admission of guilt. Knowing something is true and proving it are two different things, you can weather this storm. Look at Rawhide, he is still in situ, this strategy will work! Hold fast lad!

Must admit it is a strategy that seems to work. Problem is that I understand from yesterday’s blog that he has already made an admission of guilt to the bishop. That in itself should have been enough for a suspension a divinis.

Did Fr Ryan study in Germany? Isn’t it a good idea for a diocesan priest to take out a mortgage and purchase a property? Gives him some independence and an opportunity for downtime out of role.

Like

How would a priest get a mortgage for anything bigger than a shoebox? Do you know how much properties cost and how much priests earn? 🤔

Like

@11:15 yes we know both of these things.
I’m not 10:52 but since this blog keeps coming back to the dependence of the priest on the bishop, buying a property is one way to break that dependence. Obviously it would be more difficult for priests in England than in Ireland.
Also don’t look down on a shoebox – even a shoebox is a resource and an investment. Also tiny places are much cheaper to run.
Oh – it’s better to rent it out to cover the bills because empty property insurance is difficult unless you live in it a certain time a year.
If a priest literally can’t manage to get the deposit together he could use the talents we have seen here and prostitute himself to the hierarchy. A car will depreciate quickly, but the monetary value invested in a property will rise.
Even stocks and shares are useless these days.

The Vatican acknowledged the existence of secret guidelines for priests who break their vows of celibacy and father children. The document requests that a cleric who has fathered a child leaves the priesthood to “assume his responsibilities as a parent by devoting himself exclusively to the child”. The document was “for internal use … and is not intended for publication”.

Pope Francis is very strong in stating that in the meantime, celibacy must be observed. He would not throw out every priest who violated celibacy; individual lapses can be forgiven. But a priest who is incapable of observing celibacy should return to the lay state, Francis wrote before he became pope.

And what about sex with an ordinary parishioner?

The church needs a frank discussion of these issues with input from the laity. Sex between a priest and adult can be more than simply a violation of celibacy. It can also be a violation of professional ethics. With the advice of laity with expertise in these areas, the church needs to adopt best practices and hold itself to the highest standards. The church needs the help of laity not only in developing standards but also in enforcing them. No profession, including the clergy, is good at policing itself.

May any man of the cloth struggling with his vow be guided on the right path. May there be compassion. May there be forgiveness. May there be understanding.

Have no desire to criticise Fr Ger as I don’t have all the full facts in comparison to owner of this blog and the Bishop himself.

Scenario – if he leaves the church as it would look good on him and for himself and his integrity as well. He’s leading a double life which is quite harder to maintain just like the famous spy Kim Philby.it leads to all sort of problems such as drink et al. He will have to choose one life which is priesthood or laity life. He would be more freer in the life of laity with no responsibility to his Bishop. Counselling might be needed for him to find his way though.

I don’t trust bishops cos they not honest with the laity and they will always maintain their secrecy.

It’s easy to preach the gospel of Christ. It’s another matter to live it.
We have had religious rhetoric for generations in Ireland…
It’s a pity survivors of Church abuse; children, vulnerable adults, including
former seminarians, etc, are not given compassion, understanding or concern.
Then again, why show compassion to those abused by the Church.
Those abused, the great unwashed, have no rights in canon law.
So, who cares!
The hierarchy certainly don’t care.
Trying to prevent abuse and protect members of the community, particularly vulnerable
members of the community- while seeking justice, calling out abusiveness, corruption,
and criminality EVEN in the catholic church, gives glory to God regardless of what elitist
nonsense some clerics along with their supporters post on this blog.
Not everyone who says Lord, Lord, will enter the Kingdom but those who do the will of the Father.

Then again, why show compassion to those abused by the Church.
Those vast majority of those abused by the Church have no rights in canon law.
Do you consider trying to prevent abuse while protecting members of the community, particularly vulnerable members of the community, is not giving glory to God?

If Bishop Monahan was a True Shepherd he would have suspended Father Ger Fitzgerald weeks ago.
As Bishop he has a duty now to go an apologise to the people of Cloughleigh that the Priest who has been administering to them has broken his vow of Celibacy and suppose to administer the Sacraments and Preach the Gospel.
All anyone want is the TRUTH to be told to the parishioners and Ger should do that tomorrow apologise to the people for leading double standards.
Being Kilometres away from the Dioceses of Killaloe I have no interest in Bishop Fintan Monahan’s Dioceses however he is allowing a LIAR of a Priest to continue in Sacred Ministry.

One of their times are limited and it is either Bishop Monahan or Father Fitzgerald and some how I think it will be the latter.

Father Fitzgerald thinks he is a star with people watching all over the World and that maybe correct but they are watching to see how long he can still be a hypocrite.

Why have no Irish bishops who covered up abuse gone to prison?
Who is suggesting violence, retaliation or inflicting hurt?
I am not, nor does this blog call for retaliation, anger, violence or inflicting hurt.
The institutional Church put its reputation before children destroying countless lives, discrediting the gospel and the moral authority of the Church simply because clergy are deemed more important, more precious, more valuable than those not ordained- a twisted perversion of scripture, if ever. Bishops also have a duty to ensure justice is done and seen to be done .Otherwise, how can bishops ever speak out on issues of injustice in secular society credibly? By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. “Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action.”138 “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of “the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved.”139

To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.

The Priest, as portrayed by the Irish actor Andrew Scott in the second series of Fleabag, captivated hundreds of thousands – and it is heterosexual women who were most vehemently passionate about him.

As one Twitter user put it, “When that priest said ‘kneel’ my v*****a exploded in a way a man has never quite been able to achieve.” Or “It’s not just me who now spends most minutes of the day thinking about the Fleabag priest. Right?”

One of the main questions regularly returned to is: why do women fancy him so much? What is it about this priest that turns women on? In the UK, Google searches for “Can priests get married?” are up 170 per cent, a direct result of the Hot Priest effect.

Some women ARE responsible for their flirtations outside of their marriage or relationships. Let’s call a spade a spade. People who marry, civilly or sacramentally make public declarations to uphold the integrity (and sanctity) of their commitment, as does a priest by ordination. In Pat’s world view the priest is always the villian. Absurd thinking. Those who break their vows should be judged equally.

7.40 Blame the woman and Fr Ger is allowed to carry on in his not so priestly ministry as its her fault and he just had to jump into bed with her. Sure, he couldn’t help it….. her shirt was short, or she wore red lipstick etc excuses don’t work anymore. It’s Annie Murphy all over again…. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” You all have very short memories.

Maybe if Fr Ger had better formation and support from his brother priests, he might not be in this predicament.

@Séamus That’s just bizarre. Sometimes I get the impression that it’s assumed that a woman is easily led and I find that a bit demeaning. Mind you, with comments like those of the Twitter user, I can understand why.

Hot priest – the overwhelming majority are tubs of lard. Most current seminarians and priests would easily qualify for the undatables tv show…

A group of 26 Italian women – all claiming to be in affairs with priests – wrote to Pope Francis pleading with him to end the Catholic Church’s celibacy vow.

The women said that there were many more like them who were “living in silence.”

“We love these men, they love us, and in most cases, despite all efforts to renounce it, one cannot manage to give up such a solid and beautiful bond,” they wrote in a joint letter.

They added that “very little is known about the devastating suffering of a woman who is deeply in love with a priest”.

And none left the priesthood for their women…… What does that say about these priests? Leading double lives?

@10:06pm

Some 6,000 former priests in Italy have left the church so they can marry.

Seamus, and you write about the 26 broken hearted women pining for the selfish priests who want their cake and eat it. The 6000 are true to themselves and to their vocation.

Would they also write to Pope Francis regarding Church teaching on bigamy if these men were married? I don’t think that one gets from zero to deeply in love in an instant. The only right response at the first sign of any thought in that direction is to run a mile.

@10.05 I’m definitely not blaming the woman but in the case of two adults, are both not responsible? I absolutely believe that whatever is the correct procedure in a situation like this for a priest should be followed. I’m a layperson and know very little of Canon Law. I know that if I were a parishioner and this was going on, I would be devastated.

Hi Pat Sure once upon a time you stood your ground. I dont know much about Ger but at this stage spitting the dummy may well be a means to an end

@9.44 I would also include those who haven’t taken vows. We are all called to lives of integrity. Among my 30-something single peers, a free-for-all attitude to their sexual lives is very common.
