Bishop Fintan Monahan of Killaloe is this weekend removing Fr Ger Fitzgerald from the district of Cloughleigh and the parish of Ennis.
This comes weeks after it emerged that Ger had had an affair, involving sexual intercourse, with a female parishioner at a time when she was vulnerable – following the death of her father and the dissolution of the family home.
During the six month affair Ger brought his lady friend to a Limerick chip shop every Sunday.
Ger never brought the lady to his Clougleigh presbytery because, he said: “I have no television”.
The sexual relations took place in the lady’s premises.
The bottom line, in this case, is that Ger, as an RC priest, took a public vow of celibacy and broke it by by having sex with a parishioner.
In line with his Church’s discipline and teaching Fintan Monahan had to act.
Some think he acted far too slowly?
Fintan had the difficult task of getting to the truth as Ger first denied the affair.
He later told Fintan the truth.
While Fintan had a duty of care to the woman he also has a duty of care to Ger. The two had to be balanced.
The woman, in this case, believes that she has been listened to and helped. She will also receive practical support.
Ger’s future is in his own hands and the hands of Fintan and other Church authorities.
Does he want priesthood?
Or does he want sex with ladies?
THE FINALE – SATURDAY NIGHT IN CLOUGHLEIGH
As Ger was due to celebrate his lass Mass in Cloughleigh last night (Saturday) the proverbial sh.. hit the fan.
After talk of a “guard of honour” for Ger, a going away party during Covid and threats against the woman Ger slept with, the bishop had to cancel the 7 pm Mass.
They also had to stop a planned petition.
The Garda had to informed of the threats.
Talk about going out with a “bang”.
I actually feel a bit sorry for Fitan.
He’s had both Jerry the Onanist, and Ger the Penetrator to deal with at the one time.
Who would want to be an RC bishop in this day and age?

Probably an intentional misreading of intention on your part.
Alternatively it could be their way of supporting the ending of obligatory celibacy (for some).

Having your end away with a person other than your spouse is wrong. Even if there was no clerical celibacy Ger is in the wrong, as far as the moral teachings of the Church are concerned.

Finally! And agreed bishops seems to spend an inordinate amount of their time having to deal with problematic clergy. I get the bishop has a duty of care to the offending priest. A couple of weeks ago there was the sad case of the cathedral administrator committing suicide after he was removed following allegations. It must be hard as a bishop to sleep at night with all that on your mind.

As a resident of Cloughleigh all my life, Mr fr ger the fraud Fitzgerald had a lucky escape on the Saturday as we are divided in this town over him, and we was not prepared to give him a good send off. Lucky bishop fentan stopped the night of party as there was going to be a battle and Cloughleigh would have suffered as a town torn apart. God bless and may peace be restored in ennis and Cloughleigh

for breaking he’s vows, taking advantage of a girl that he didn’t even have the decensy to admit until evidence was provided. While allowing the people of ennis to bully threaten and intimidate her. He’s farewell celebrations and he’s pat on the back were cancelled. Rightly so, weldone to the Bishop for he’s quick response. He is not an active priest anymore, he has been removed, he has no business in mass!

The people of Ennis are a curious lot. I mean in 2011 they erected a monument at the site of the former Industrial School and Magdalene laundry in appreciation of the Sisters of Mercy. Some people will forgive a priest for a lapse of his vow. Some people will not. Bishop Pat’s Killaloe friend wrote very well last Sunday. Bishop Fintan has acted.
Some people will say Bishop Fintan took too long to act. Others will say he had to take time and due diligence. Regardless. Bishop Fintan has acted.
It took two people to tango. Many people on this blog have gone through a bereavement. It doesn’t cloud intimate decisions. One person’s alleged vulnerability and innocence is being overstated by some but it’s par for the course by them and should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Taking to social media to share certain messages was a decision. We all have to live with the consequences of our actions. The woman will have to carry the cross of her decision to take to social media. At the same time people should not belittle her. People should also show love and compassion. Love and compassion which should be shown towards both people. Not just one or the other.
A priest has departed. He is at a fork in the road in his life. May he respectfully be allowed the time and space to make a decision. 3 to 6 months out as Bishop Pat’s Killaloe friend wrote. Commit to the vow or return to lay state.
Lá breithe shona duit Bishop Pat! Have a nice day!

11:58, like so many these days, she took to social media for ‘attention’. Women like her sadly lack adequate character formation, a grounding in the virtues and tend to jump to conclusions without any due consideration of the consequences for all involved. Her actions were designed to inflict the maximum possible damage because she felt hurt. Sadly, there is often hurt, pain and confusion when a relationship breaks down and we all need time to allow the ‘healing waters’ to flow and to recover and to rebuild. I wish Yvonne well for the future.

I hope I can explain the normal procedure is the BISHOP does it but with Killaloe having a Bishop who is in hiding then the Vicar Forane (dean) gets sent as it is the Dean’s who get left to pick up the mess.
This is TWICE in 8 weeks Father Tom Ryan has had to do this dirty work while Fintan hides and there was not even a Pastoral Letter to the people of Cloughleigh and Ennis.
Pastoral area 5 (Abbey) will need to cover for Ger and Gerry so rationalisation will need to happen you can help by finding the Bishop.
Ger did not want to do it himself as he does not want to inform the people of the Truth that he sleeps with women and worse still parishioners who are weak and vulnarable.
So I hope he had a good send off as and if he comes back Fintan will still be his Bishop and be interesting where he goes he will always be known as the S****** Priest. and Gerry will be always known as the W****** Priest.
Not to forget weak Fintan and I hope the victim takes it to rome as they made out Ger asked for a Sabbatical but the truth likely is Fintan told him it is the only way out just now.
Fintan maybe left carrying the can for horrendous administration.

Bishop Fintan Monahan should have made a statement to the people who use the Cloughleigh Oratory.
The Bishop was correct in not letting Ger say the Mass as it would have been false as all his masses have been totally double standards for ages.
Ger said in his email he asked the Bishop to go on sabattical the Bishop should correct Ger’s lie as it was either go on sabbatical or out.
The music team of Cloughleigh read this blog and have commented on this blog I hope you listened to Father Tom Ryan as he said there is pleanty of places for you to go to Mass and named three even said they have installed web casting yesterday in the Friary.
So you should ask him what is happening to the Oratory now however do not give up your mucical talants use them in another Chapel.

The batter on the fish should be soft. The addition of a little milk in the batter formula should help.
A nice supper, bottle of coke with straw, booth with hard wooden seats and table like an ironing board.

The fact Der had all of his parishioners and his Bishop supporting him while, at the same time the lady was being victimised and was tossed aside, makes her the vulnerable one. Abandoned and extremely vulnerable.
Der had his “following”, and his “supporters” would, could, see NO wrong in him – I’m sure it was a very, very frightening situation to be forced into (I know what it feels like and, in no uncertain terms…).
What he did was more than just wrong: it was unapologetically and comprehensively wrong.

Safeguarding and forgiveness cannot, and must not, be conflated — you can forgive til the cows come home… that is your own personal decision.
However, society, or indeed any individual who does choose to forgive, cannot allow a dangerous person to remain in such a position of trust — a position of trust, authority and power over other people and their lives – just because of their subjective feelings of forgiveness — and most certainly not if the perpetrator, or perpetrators, have proven they are quite unsuitable to hold such positions of trust!

Are priests who have a sexual relationship always asked to step aside and have a period of discernment? Or is it just if the incident gets a lot of publicity and the bishop feels FORCED to take this action? Would the normal action not just be moving the offending priest to another parish with his reputation intact and leaving both old parish and new parish totally oblivious to the double life he had been leading – no need for transparency – even to the sheep paying his salary. This is what happened in Down and Connor in 2013 after PP had a 2-year sexual affair with a parishioner young enough to be his daughter – even using the sacristy as a meeting place. So why one rule for one and a different rule for another? Why the inconsistency?

The correct answer is every Bishop should act within canon law however some Bishops do not understand canon law or do not want to use it.
The Bishops in Ireland are well behind everyone else with clerical cover ups as they are still in the dark days as they think the Irish people are thick.
Ger and Gerry should have been suspended long before they were and I understand NONE of them are suspended both on Sabbaticals.
The people of Killaloe need to stand up to Fintan Monahan and say not in their dioceses and report him to the Papal Nuncio or to Cardinal Marc Ouellet.
However when the penny drops with the Irish Espiscopate that they are just moving the problem around and should be up front with the clergy and tell them their number is up.
Who is going to TRUST Ger and Gerry in a PArish as NO women will want to be in Ger’s comapany alone and Gerry will always be know as the W*****.
Ger even yesterday was still in self denial and maying the victim look bad.
