Chilean Jesuits Recognize 64 Cases Of Sexual Abuse

AFP – Agence France Presse. May 25 2021.

The Jesuit congregation of Chile has acknowledged that its priests sexually abused 64 people, including 34 children, between 2005 and 2020, according to a report from the Catholic order obtained by AFP Tuesday.

Eleven Jesuit priests were found guilty following an internal investigation of “abusive situations with a sexual connotation” involving underage victims, according to the report by the Society of Jesus, known colloquially as the Jesuits.

Of the perpetrators, “five have died, three are currently under strict professional supervision plans, and another three are no longer part of the Society of Jesus,” said the order.

The Jesuit order said that since 2018 it has been providing authorities background to the abuse allegations.

It added that 31 of the victims have received financial compensation.

Amongst those found guilty was Renato Poblete, the late former Jesuit leader who allegedly abused four minors and 19 adults over four decades from 1960.

Poblete, who died in 2010, spent almost 20 years as the head of the Hogar de Cristo, the country’s largest foundation for the homeless.

He was first accused of abuse in 2019, after which the Jesuit congregation asked for forgiveness.

The Chilean Catholic Church has been embroiled in sexual abuse scandals since 2010 when pedophile priest Fernando Karadima was first accused of molesting boys.

A Vatican canonical court found him guilty in 2011 and in 2018 he was defrocked by Pope Francis.

His case helped expose a culture of sexual abuse within the Church in Chile.

PAT SAYS

Here comes another RC sex scandal.

This time involving the Jesuits – Pope Francis’ own order.

And once again the perpetrator is dead meaning the victims will not see justice being served.

But at least the Jesuits are acknowledging this one and I hope that means something to the victims.

Hopefully they will get counselling and compensation too.

Its a long read but interesting with small extract 👇
In February, a Washington Post report suggested that early in his pontificate, Francis learned about the systematic priestly abuse of institutionalized deaf children in Argentina, decades ago. The abuse had originally been brought to light not by Church officials but by civil authorities. The deaf victims reported that they were discouraged from learning sign language, but that one hand sign often used by the abusive priests was the forefinger to the lips: Silence.

@12.30

Francis knew of this abuse before he was pope, in fact when he was cardinal archbishop of Buenis Aires. He ignored the reports he received and threw his full support behind the man who would eventuall be convicted of sexually molesting the deaf children who were, supposedly, in his fatherly care.

Francis has NEVER returned to Argentina since his demotion to pope. Maybe his run in with abuse survivors in Chile when he visited there and made a public ass of himself over a bishop who had ignored the abuse of children by a priest made him waken up to the real possibility that he might get avfar worse reception in his home country.

Yes, it is.

What’s more, Francis had a defence of this man, Fr Grassi, drawn up by a panel of experts, presumably at considerable cost, and presented to an Argentine legal tribunal. Francis’ attemtpt ailed.

Grassi is serving a 15 year sentence for abusing a boy in his ironically titled ‘Happy Children’s Home’.

Why does Roman Catholic priesthood keep attracting this calibre of candidate? Isn’t it obvious? The irony of such attraction (perverts to what is supposedly sacred) is apparent, not real. Priesthood is not sacred. And it is not sacred, because it was not intended by Christ.
There were NO priests in the early church; just followers who met in one another’s homes for safety and fellowship and who, IN COMMON, broke bread, and drank from a communal cup in memory of their saviour, Jesus the Christ. This is historical fact, not fiction.
Priesthood is an entirely human contrivance, a historic vanity project that, predictably, went terribly wrong.

Like

And whether or not people are concerned about the origin of the priesthood (I personally really don’t care) we can agree about who it attracts
It does however have one function – we can see dodgy characters coming a mile off because of their membership of the priesthood.

Letter from Rome: Cardinal Marc Ouellet throws his hat into the ring
By Robert Mickens
The friendly French-Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet who is finishing up more than a decade as head of the Vatican’s office for bishops has just launched his candidacy to become pope.
There are those among the cardinal-electors who would be eager to back Ouellet’s candidacy. However, they know that once he is no longer head of the Congregation for Bishops his chances to become pope greatly diminish.
Benedict XVI gave Ouellet his influential Vatican job in June 2010 when he rescued the affable French-Canadian theologian from a difficult and rather dismal eight-year tenure as Archbishop of Québec.
And when Benedict shocked the world and retired from the papacy in 2005, Ouellet was much discussed as a leading contender to succeed him.
“I have to be ready even if I think that probably others could do it better,” he told the CBC in the run-up to the conclave.
“But I will cross the river when I get to the bridge,” he said in English. “My identity is to be a missionary – right from the beginning,” said the cardinal.

Like

Cardinal Marc Ouellet is a Good man but will never be Pope.
Cardinal Tagle or Cardinal Parolin are front runners now and Cardinal Sean O’Malley the outsider.
There will not be a vacancy for a long time God Willing as Pope Francis seems to be in good health.

Cardinal Marc Ouellet is supposed to be going this year.

I’m not buying this recognising that it’s happened. When you read further into Poblete he is said to have had six women on the go at once.
We have recently seen the havoc caused by a priest with two women on the go yet these Jesuits expect us to believe nobody knew anything. Seriously?
I think they have probably had a culture in the community where it was okay for a priest to have a few women and have now been caught out so they are following the classic church playbook of denying anyone knew.

First the USA, then Europe, now South America. Gradually the spotlight falls relentlessly where there is wrongdoing. But, this will be nothing compared to what will emerge from the African churches, where there is corruption and wrongdoing on an industrial scale. Watch that space. What has already been uncovered elsewhere will be as nothing compared to what the clergy and the institution of the Church get up to in Africa. Mind you, they were taught well, in many places by Irish missionaries who sowed the seeds of corruption and abuse, in far off lands where they thought they could get away with it. Some of the old boys are now back in Ireland in their retirement, hoping that they are long dead by the time the truth comes out. Mind you, their Orders know who they are.

There’s no basis for such a practice, no formal, official or actual conferring of a doctoral degree. It is a vestige of a clericalist era and mentality.

The “HOLY GID” has a point. If priests have a vocation, then it follows that God calls paedophiles, ephebophiles, and the generally corrupt and corruptible to the priesthodd as well. This is the logic of arguing that priests are called by God

Can you not argue with them rather than call them “morons”? Both have a point.
If God vocates men to the priesthood, then it follows that he KNOWINGLY calls perverts, too. Why would he do this if he was a God of justice and mercy?
You can’t have it both ways. If priests have vocations, then the logic of this is that priests who rape children have vocations, too, as well as all those, popes and bishops, who shaped canon law so that it would protect these criminals regardless of the welfare of children.
From your standpoint, God is not just. He is as corrupt as the men who claim to serve him.

The likes of the Donegal Healer mentioned in a comment a few weeks back do incredible work helping the victims on a journey of forgiveness for themselves to be able to heal and live.

Do you know that Donegal healer that you speak of.?

Hes spoke a lot of hard truths that some priests in the North didn’t like it even among Catholic laity. It was Catholic laity who reported that healer to bishops whereever he spoke in the churches. They forced him out to hotels or ballrooms where he travelled and spoke very hard truths on Catholicism. One of the hard truths was that some priests taught Catholics in wrong way. That’s why some bishops out there, don’t believe in JC and practiced it in the opposite way.

Healer said ‘forgiveness is the key’ to healing. I wasn’t ready to let go that time. He said forgive them as it took me a very long time to let it go. When he passed away as I was only half way there. Then 1 year later, I met a healer from kerry, who was totally the opposite to Donegal healer. He wouldn’t criticise the bishops at all but still he couldn’t get into the churches and give a hotel. He was praised for his preaching by bishops outside Ireland. Then I began to wonder no praise from irish bishops, just saying.

Like the Donegal healer, he was forced out to hotels and ballrooms to give a talk. It was a hotel outside Navan where he spoke as there was a black priest from that parish who came to say mass as well. I was able to forgive rcc on that day. But still I don’t trust rcc cos they caused it. One poster this week said its a devil playground which made sense when it comes to protecting innocent and also vulnerable kids as well.

Yes they would be seen to be invalid. Boris was baptised RC, got confirmed in the C of E at Eton. Still as a baptised RC his two marriages outside the RC church would not be recognised. If he had been baptised an Anglican that would have been a different matter altogether. Those marriages would have been recognised and his marriage in the cathedral would have been refused. There is a very subtle difference here.
