ARCHDIOCESE OF DUBLIN IN FINANCIAL TROUBLE.

Farrell and Dermo

ARCHBISHOP’S HOUSE
DUBLIN 9
Tel 837 3732 Fax 836 9796

3 June 2021

Dear Parishioner,

In the last fifteen months, we have been unable to do the things we normally do to express our faith
and our solidarity with each other. This is not to say that the life of prayer and charity have ceased,
but life’s usual patterns have been disrupted, as have the deep practices that nourish our faith,
empower our social solidarity, and animate the mission of the Church towards the poor and
disadvantaged. Along with the countries of the developed world, our country has been fortunate that
people have been supported during the significant economic upheaval and hardship of the pandemic.
Even in our grief and loss, we have much to be thankful for.
Communities and parishes have shown resilience and imagination in their responses to the challenges
of the pandemic. For many this has revealed new ways of collaboration and involvement. We also
have to acknowledge that certain aspects of Church life have been severely impacted. One of these is
parish finances, and while we eagerly long for a return to the life that we knew, we also have to act to
ensure that our parishes have the financial minimum they need to survive.
The necessary restriction of public worship has profoundly affected the two essential Sunday Mass
collections on which parish funds depend. The first collection—as you know—supports clergy
ministering throughout the diocese as well as sick and retired priests and priests working in other
ministries throughout the diocese. The second collection—the ‘Share’ collection—supports diocesan
services to parishes especially disadvantaged parishes. In the last financial year, the clergy collection
decreased by 54% and the ‘Share’ collection decreased by 65%. This year the situation is even more
grave—with a decrease of 80% and 86% respectively for the first quarter (January to March 2021
That this would have happened, given the character of the necessary lockdowns, is not surprising. I am
grateful to all who have continued to give so generously in the past 15 months.
This generosity cannot be expected to address the deeper financial challenges which the Archdiocese
faces. I have therefore approved the proposal to hold a new Summer Dues collection to support priests
of the diocese. This initiative will follow the pattern of the Christmas and Easter dues collections giving
parishioners an opportunity to contribute to the income that supports priests.
The Summer Offering collection will be launched on the weekend of the 20th June. In making this
appeal, I ask you to remember that the greatest resource of the Church is its people—both laity and
clergy —working hand-in-hand. The age profile of the priest is rapidly increasing, and there are few
vocations to priesthood and religious life. Yet the priests we have in the diocese continue to serve
quietly week-in-week-out while more is being asked of fewer and fewer. The ministry and mission of
our Church cannot continue without this humble, generous service.
I thank you for continuing to support our parishes and the clergy who work among you. Your
generosity to this new initiative of Summer Dues will provide much needed practical and moral
support for priests working quietly and effectively at the heart of every local community of faith.
While great strides have been made in getting the virus under control, there is still a way to go before
our country and other nations are out of the woods. We are facing the summer with its the brighter
mornings and long evenings. May the change of pace that summer brings provide a break from the
darkness of the difficult winter we have endured. May the Holy Spirit lift our hearts, and renew our
hope so that in ‘our common home’ we may share the life for which God created us (see Gen 1:3 1,2:18, and John 10:10).

Dermot Farrell

Archbishop of Dublin.

PAT SAYS:

The Irish people now have a once in a lifetime opportunity to break the back of the RCC in Ireland and its disastrous control of Ireland since at least 1922.

Starve them of money!

Cahal Daly once told his fellow bishops at Maynooth: “Starve Buckley of the oxygen of publicity” 😁

Now we have this unrivalled opportunity to starve the RCC of the oxygen of finance and money.

It is interesting to hear that in Dublin their finances are down by 54% to 86%.

For Ireland’s sake it needs to be down by 100%

In my opinion, anyone contributing to the RCC is contributing to an evil project.

I support seven charities and I’ve made sure none of them are Roman Catholic. I support secular charities that look after the homeless, the provision of fresh water in third world countries, animal welfare and cancer research and treatment.

Any organisation that has done and is doing evil is unworthy of the generosity of ordinary people.

Of course you will always have the blind Catholics who think they are buying their way into heaven by giving money to the RCC and its reps.

Not one did, I’m afraid. Zilch! Priests were all so well off they could afford to eat other foods that were plentiful in Ireland at the time: only the potato was affected by the blight.

But hey! Now come on! Father did have to keep up his strength, you know. 😒 He, being ontologically superior to the dregs that were starving to death, was so much more necessary for God’s salvation plan. And it let Father very nicely off the hook when it came to apportioning blame for all those awful deaths to follow.

I cannot contain my delight, and glee, that the romanist parasites, spongers, scroungers, and moochers of the Arch-Hypocrites of Dublin have been reduced to writing long, rambling, begging letters to parishioners there for what they prize above all else, including God himself : MAMMON!
Before any Dublin parishioner even considers dropping money into the rapacious, indolent hands of these freeloaders, think on this: these leeches belong to, and freely serve before God, an institution that regards your abused children not as victims, but as parties to adultery with priest-rapists. This is the new old thinking to emerge from the Vatican, and these Christ-betrayers, and betrayers of your children, will support it.
Would you cooperate with your oppressors?

No I wouldn’t and that’s why they won’t see one cent.

It was a great night for a select sizeable number of Catholic clergy at Brown’s Hotel London. All expenses paid, no shortage of Champers and the best of food. I’ll make you the type of answer Pope Francis made in response to his own question, and recently reported in either Crux or America: why does God sometimes seem to ignore our prayers? Effectively, Francis replied with another question: who are we, God’s servants, to question God’s will.
After 2000 years of accumulated spiritual and biblical knowledge and intelligence, this was the best Francis could do… a ducking, evasive platitude rather than what one might reasonably expect at this stage, a wise insight.
I’m following his example here by being just as evasive of your question. 😀

Despite my disapproval of the horrible, offensive comnents so far by Magna and the Pat Says invitation to strip parishes bare, I personally will not be participating in this project. Yes, our salary has fallen hugely but that’s as it is for thousands of others. Certainly in our Parish, parishioners are exceptionally generous. Yet, I cannot agree in conscience to this request by our AB. He has been badly advised. There’s no doubt that parishioners will respond fo such a request: they’re loyal and will contribute and generally they are “responding” to their local clergy. But, I will not be partaking in this request. I have already forwarded to headquarters my disgust at this concept and feel a sense of shame that it was sent to parishes at a time when many parishioners are preparing for a much deserved holiday. The irreverent, ugly hostility by Pat and Mags, while not surprising, is very, very violent. Be assured, many of my colleagues think likewise. But then, smashing others ignominiously is de rigeur for you pair, sadly. It’s your hobby.

Like

Sadly Father, I have seen the horrors of the RCC from the inside and minister every day to people whose lives have been destroyed by your beloved colleagues.

I do admire your opposition to the further fleecing of the baa baas.

Like

7.53: I agree with you Pat about the horrors inflicted in people. I am ashamed but I’m too have tried to help some survivors. I just feel the extremist anti clerical rants are unfair to the ordinary priest in the parishes who, like you, are trying to do something worthwhile. The “disciuragement” is morally crushing.

Liked by 1 person

Well perhaps you would feel less discouraged and morally crushed if you didn’t belong to a ‘church’ whose treatment of children was described by the UN as amounting to torture.
You can’t have your cake and eat it – you are merely experiencing the natural result of your church’s behavior.

Like

You are fully right 7:55 that he anti clerical rants are very unfair on the ordinary clergy. Many priests, like Bishop Pat, are trying to do something worthwhile.
If the reconciliation of Church and Bishop Pat had succeeded around ’92 to ’95, Bishop Pat would have had many allies from the good ordinary clergy you speak of.
7:55, will the Church ever reconcile with Bishop Pat? Will Bishop Pat then make haste to help us?

Like

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”― Edmund Burke

These good priests you talk about – why aren’t they speaking out?

Is it because they won’t bite the hand that feeds?

Whited sepulchres the lot of them.

I find nothing offensive or hate filled in Pat or Magna’s language – just plain talking – saying it as it is.

As for the letter from the Arch B – he was ill advised. If you are going to ask for money – ask directly and plainly don’t dress it up in flowery, pompous language that a significant number of people would find difficult to understand or be prepared to be wade through.

I am hoping the letter falls on deaf ears and rejoicing in the fact that an institution that had a complacent and tyrannical grip over the people of Ireland is reduced to writing begging letters.

Father we do not have headquarters you have lost your marbles if you see offices in any dioceses as headquarters as they are the Churches administration offices.
So do you see your parish as a branch office surely not.
The Church is an organisation and not a company Father.
There should be NO collections for active clergy as they are salaried however retired clergy deserve a collect.
It would be interesting to see what Ger and Gerry’s ex parishioners give and more so will Fintan give them it as they are out of service.

Like

What about their sale of proceeds re sale of cloniffe, 95M.

why not use that money? Sell their properties to recoup cash.

Dublin diocese is very wealthy organisation with lots of assets, portfolio of investments.

Still they are asking us to donate to them even with their €95m in their bank 🤔🤔🤔🤔.

No records of previous and past donations as well and where did they go? Its about openness and financial responsibility.

Dublin diocese is the only diocese to date to have issued this type of letter.

Been watching the movie ‘the field’. It was quite impressive in some parts re acting. Noticed that a priest there in that movie closed church gates during the famine as they didn’t feed their ‘flock’. Some priests were comfortable during the famine, while at the same time his parishioners were dying. Was it true re priest not feeding his flock or it was made up for the sake of that movie.

During the pandemic, Dublin diocese didn’t defend the laity when laity wanted the church to reopen. Why should we donate or contribute to Dublin diocese cos they didn’t defend us as the laity in the first place.

Curiously they said they had received some money (from where?) but it wasn’t enough given their tax exemptions due to their charity status.

Like

To be fair most dioceses in Ireland and the UK have donation pages added to their web sites.
But Dermott is going to a new level for money to give to the clergy that is shocking they will have a fortune in their banks as where have they spent their salaries during this pandemic.
As for Dublin’s real estate the sales will becoming once a diocesan plan is reached what churches have to go.

Fr mc Verry ,same applies re private donations and bit of Dublin city council funding as well.

In my experience, clergy live as well as if not better than the average person / family. A great deal is already found for them, and their stipend / cash / offerings etc are on top and are for the nicer parts of living – like their nice cars, like their foreign holidays, like their going out lay clothes. My view is that bishops and clergy should just suck this up for a bit longer in solidarity with the many people and families who also have suffered economic and financial difficulty over this last year and don’t have anybody like the Church or parishioners to bail them out. Fundamental option for the poor ? Well, let’s see it in action now, please !

Money for sacraments is their game.
Money to placate and exploit deeply embedded fear of ‘final damnation’,
Two things I’m interested in money wise:
Why was Antonio Menninni appointed Papal Nuncio to Britain – his father Luigi was jailed for his part in the Banco Ambrosia Scandal – does not the apple fall far from the tree? – his dad was a money launderer who worked with Michel Sidona (Mafia) and Lucia Geli (P2). Calvi another friend of his dad was hung from Blackfriars Bridge in 1982.
What if anything did the Westminster Diocese know about the ongoing massive property fraud in Chelsea involving 1/4 of a billion and funded by money from St Peter’s Pence?
Could a fraud of this magnitude happen under their noses without them knowing?
The Vatican and Roman Catholic Church always involves financial impropriety and crime of one kind or another whilst presuming to teach the world on the moral and ethical life.

My parents used to talk about the pre-Concilliar thing at funerals in Enniskillen in which the priest read out what people had given at requiem Masses, eg Seamus A gave half a crown, Paddy B gave thruppence. Names and amounts were read out in full, down to the last penny.
It shamed people on two grounds, by making people feel they had to give more because their offering looked small; or it said the deceased obviously wasn’t well liked if people didn’t give much.
Did these so-called funeral dues happen anywhere else or was it only in Enniskillen?

I’ve heard stories like that from elderly Irish parishioners. As a priest I was absolutely shocked and disgusted. What someone offers is only their business. Glad it doesn’t happen now.

Like

No the only place they happened were on your sick mind.
No clergy would do this.
In the RCC Church Requiem Masses are a corporal work of mercy to the clergy so you would only pay the Music Team
I take it your a lapsed catholic.
The funeral directors may give a donation but it is all recorded for the Charity commissioners.

Only pay the ‘music team’? A-hah, hah, hah 😂
Absolute bollocks! I pre-paid my own funeral costs two years ago and a proportion of it was reserved purely for the priest. I refused to pay it, as I want no Romanist anywhere near my remains.
I saved myself £50!👍 And I partied with the money. 😀

Yes it happened elsewhere. I have very clear memories of the priest at Mass coming down from the altar, and standing at the sanctuary gates, reading the “dues” list from a notebook. Always starting with the highest, he’d recite name and amounts in descending order. The memory is so clear to me that I remember the usual top three:
Dr O’ £1.
Kevin P. £1 (local publican & hotelier)
Tony M £1. ( local publican)
And it always had me wondering why they were collecting for the ✡ Jews!

Thanks, MMM @5.31pm for confirming that the funeral dues happened. A rude denier earlier said that my parents had imagined it. They did not, and they also mentioned that the priest stood on the sanctuary steps to read the list.
I assume that the money went to the priests and not to the bereaved family.
What a degrading spectacle it must have been, plus it was a chance for the parish bigwigs to get their big donation read out in front of the plebs.

Your choice of pseudonym and comment indicates your mentality. I don’t think he attempted any joke by simply recalling an honest memory. However your comment is worthy of a smile,…….of sympathy

The RCC is surprisingly inexpert in its real estate dealings. The valuable All Hallows, Mater Dei and St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, have all been secularised and given away, despite being worth millions.
Similarly, the north/new campus at Maynooth was sold to Maynooth University on a 999 year lease for just over €1 million, despite the Church having spent millions on it and the site being worth far, far in excess of what it was sold for.
The south campus is similarly being readied for sale at a knock-down price, with vultures gathering and planning permission being sought to build houses on the graf.
Never mind though, we can ask the widows for a bigger mite.

They need to take lessons from the Jesuits. Sold their property in Kensington for hundreds of millions. Heythrop College in Kensington Square. I think the nuns to whom it originally belonged before selling it to Heythrop are going to get a cut, because wisely they knew its value and were acutely aware that it could be sold on at a vast profit. the SJs will pocket a tidy sum, I’m sure. For the poor, the migrants, the refugees and all the other fundamental option for the poor types that they minister too. Although, I’m sure some will find its way to those prestigious schools and colleges they run in the UK for the sons and daughters of the well off. It would be goo to hear from them how they are going to spend their windfall. They are certainly spending millions on a new build novitiate in Birmingham, so I’ve read on here. How’s that going ?

Liverpool Echo. June 4, 2021 - "Children abused by family 'Paedophile Ring' but nobody brought to justice..." You, that sounds about right! 🤢 🧑‍⚖️ 🙊 🧑‍⚖️ 🙉 🧑‍⚖️ 🙈 🧑‍⚖️says:

— Liverpool Echo. June 4, 2021 —
”’Children abused by family ‘paedophile ring’ [in Warrington / Chester Diocese] but nobody brought to justice”’ 🤢 🧑‍⚖️
“An expert panel criticised “Very poor” information sharing between Police and Social Services…”
“It made damning conclusions about how Police Officers had worked with Social Workers, suggesting that information had been “Withheld” by Police and Social Workers had failed to challenge the force…”
This is just one example of the experiences of victims and survivors who come into contact with the Police and Social Services in the North West Region of England.
There are currently other investigations ongoing, including the IICSA inquiry into the Church of England—which has also indicated particular interest within the North West Region.

@ 3:42 pm Many people do care about that particular, and thank goodness they do. Your acid remark indicates a rather nasty person behind the comment, dismissive of good people.

Why did you bring that up cos im not from Armagh diocese?

I have stated quite clearly that im not from the north & do visit there from time to time. Yes im aware that they (Armagh) do provide services for the deaf.

FYI, there was a serial abuser there in the link that you provided as he/she was named in pseudonym names in Ryan report of 2009. Many deaf boys at that time suffered re nightmares, problems with drink et al at their hands when that abuser was the head of school for deaf kids. That abuser now deceased as there was a celebration on that day with lot of vulgar and swear words used. Couldn’t believe the depth of many deaf kids now adults feelings towards that abuser. If i were you, i would recommend you to watch a move called sleeper (1996 version cos 1st one is 1973) or maxima mea culpa movie hard hitting documentary on the Vatican along with Rottweiler Ratzinger re abuses on deaf kids. Sadly it was a priest with an irish name called Murphy.

There are some ordinary suffragan dioceses with plain and straightforward bishops, and honest clergy and parish accountants, who have to take it in the neck from the high profile big shouts.
Then there are “sodalities” that aren’t under any diocesan or Vatican tribunals whatever, which hold among other things “missions” to nigh on uninhabited islands, in which the unwary are “invited” to involve themselves (to whatever extent), after which it is “night night baby” to the simple life.
Minor adjustments in the window dressing don’t go nearly as far as is being made out. Where can ordinary individuals that had got caught up in such “sodalities” look for redress to their integrity over commitments (of any kind) made “in the heat of passion”?

People who were funded to turn clergy, only to laify themselves or transfer to another denomination within a few years, get criticised. However my sympathy is with them (if they haven’t been misbehaving). Given the sentimental guilt tripping and rigid wishy washiness along the lines of “it’s your only chance of being christian” which they all seem to have been told, they were set up.

Fr Humphreys ex Anglican who married Bojo in Westminster Cathedral was posted in Enfield at the time. Who delegated him? Far more questions than answers here. If Bojo was confirmed Anglican at Eton then his RC baptism is questionable?

Like

You are correct, Father Humphries ex-Anglican vicar is parish priest in Enfield. However, father Humphries was sub-administrator of Westminster cathedral at the time of Wilfrid’s baptism. He was for a short period, acting administrator whilst canon Tuckwell was seriously ill. Basically Fr Witon parish priest in Enfield (before that sub-administrator at the cathedral) moved back as administrator when canon Tuckwell died. Father Humphries moved to Enfield.
It made sense for father Humphries to continue the marital preparations. Don’t you agree? There is nothing more to question or answer.
Please take a look at the Archdiocese of Westminster web site. There is a very clear statement on the marriage in the news section.

Obviously you cannot read. I said that that father Humphries baptised Wilfrid and was instructing the marriage couple when he was transferred to Enfield. It made sense to go back and continue for a few more months rather than someone else take over. Really quite simple to understand.
I certainly don’t have a lot to learn. You certainly do.
