FATHER MICHAEL KEANE – THE STORY.

FATHER MICHAEL KEANE was ordained a priest for the archdiocese of Tuam.

He had a wonderful approach to pastoral ministry.

His strategy was to go to a parish and study the particular needs of the people there and then begin to practically address them.

Early on he noticed that one of the big problems of the West of Ireland was lonely bachelors and spinsters living in isolated places with very little opportunity to meet friends, partners and future husbands and wives.

So Michael set up the Knock Marriage Bureau to address these issues. The bureau had great success and led to something like 500 marriages.

Father Keane’s trouble with the church started when he inherited a fortune on the death of a relative.

The archbishop Joseph Walsh wanted Michael to give the money to the diocese and told Michael: “A man with that kind of money would get a mitre”.

Michael refused and his fate was sealed.

Walsh made it impossible for Michael Keane to work in Tuam and Michael, with the agreement of Walsh and Dermot Ryan of Dublin moved to work in Templeogue in Dublin.

Unfortunately in Templeogue Michael met a difficult parish priest who carried stories to the cold and aloof Dermot Ryan.

Ryan

In any event Ryan wanted Michael out of Dublin. Michael refused to go and squatted in the presbytery.

Ryan, with his normal thickness, brought the matter to the court and obtained an eviction. The Garda carried Michael, Molly his long time housekeeper and all their belongings out of the house and dumped them on the street.

The eviction had a profound, life-changing effect on Michael and Molly. Both devout Catholics being thrown out on the street by the archbishop and the Garda.

Fortunately, with Michael’s money, he was able to buy another house in the parish where he lived until Molly died.

After his eviction and sacking Michael became involved in protesting against the Church on various matters including optional celibacy. He and I were in many protests together.

Michael, my mother Jo and myself

After Molly died, Michael retired to his native Mayo where he lived with a nephew.

He had good health for a while. But when it failed he went to a nursing hime where he died.

At some stage before this he had a reconcilitary Mass with the Church presided over by the auxiliary bishop of Dublin, Eamon Walsh.

There was no fulsome apology offered but Michael wanted to be reconciled with them.

His funeral Mass was celebrated by Michael Neary of Tuam where all Michael suffered was glossed over – in typical Roman fashion.

For some reason Michael never wanted to do anything against Roman canon law?

He didn’t run a coach and horses through it as I happily have 😁

I must say death bed reconciliations with Rome always make me feel very queasy.

Even my beloved Oscar Wilde succumbed.

It is my firm intention not to go there 🥳

It annoys you, doesn’t it, that romanist hegemony in Ireland is steeply, and irredeemably, on the wane?

That romanist priestly status here is now a receding and contemptuous memory?

Fewer and fewer people in Ireland want anything to do with these (you?) parasites, scroungers, spongers, and moochers.

I think the penny is finally dropping for many on this island that if you have to pay (Yes. And how!) a romanist priest to perform his little rituals at your funeral, then he really isn’t praying at all: he’s, as I already suggested, performing. It’s just stylised semi-street theatre.

And you know where you all can stick it.

There must be more to the Joseph Walsh chapter. He couldn’t possibly have demanded that Michael Keane would hand over his personal wealth to the diocese. Keane was a stubborn old goat who was ruined by his inheritance. It made him arrogant and difficult to manage. Authority figures became the focus of his rage. Unfortunately the PP he clashed with in Willington Parish – Paul Boland was an equally arrogant man in love with his ‘superiority’ as PP and they clashed. On a personal level he was a nice old country farmer type, shrewd as a fox but self-willed beyond measure. I liked him greatly. Thank God there was a reconciliation of sorts before his demise, largely brokered by Bishop Eamon Walsh. Despite his rebellious spirit Michael knew his arse from his elbow when it came to the authority of the church. May he rest in peace.

It is admirable that he reconciled but it wasn’t necessary. God can forgive him as he was willing to forgive others. He could have forgiven without reconciliation but he had his reasons and may he rest in peace.
Your comment has an unnecessary veiled strike against others who have had to plot a different path as followers of Christ.
“Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us. Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.

So much for gospel concern compassion and charity. Its easy to talk the talk. It’s easy to sign off letters with platitudes such as may Christ Jesus be your consolation; meanwhile covering-up continues..

I am very grateful that I have always during my ministry had access to funds, mostly inherited, that have supported me and enabled me to have a level of financial and decision making independence, rather than having to be constantly dependent on the sometimes idiotic whim of the bishop. I have always taken seriously my promise to respect and obey my bishop, but alongside that I have expected balance, reason and respect for me from him. It has not always been thae case. So, having some independence has enabled me to rise above some of the idiotic decisions he has made and to retain some dignity. Not all priests are in that fortunate position, I know, and remain infantilised and pushed about by bishops who still seem to think that they are the mouthpiece of God ! I think we have all be disabused of that silliness by revelations of how so many bishops in the past have facilitated and covered up criminal abusive behaviour by some of their priests. I do not think that they can expect that likes of me any longer to take their word as if it is from God and jump to immediately. And, when it comes to retirement, I feel fortunate that I will be able to cut the strings completely and live with dignity and independence with my own resources. Again, I feel for priests who remain tied to the apron strings of the bishop even in retirement.

To live independently in the south east of England you would need to purchase a house with an average price of around £350k. You would also need a retirement pension pot of say £500k to give you a modest annual income of around £20k to cover your living and household bills. Few clergy could ever achieve such financial independence.

Why do you feel for these priests? They chose such infantile dependency the day they were ordained: the day they chose to ditch their consciences by promising or vowing obedience to another who was not Christ.
Why do people continue to wonder at the moral depravity of romanist clergy? Did they really believe that good could come from their betrayal of Christ?

Like

I know priests who are terrified of falling out with their bishop in a way that could impact on their retirement package.
The relationship between priest and bishop is infantile and from the moment they are ordained they are infantilised.
Compounded, of course, by the fact that their bishop has been firmly shut in adolescent lock all their lives – infants leading infants so to speak.
Bishop Baron exemplified this with his recent short chastisement You Tube video in which he gives an episcopal bollocking to US Catholics for not returning to Sunday Mass – him with his excessively large pectoral cross looking all cross and offended as if he was saying ‘Go to your room’ to an especially recalcitrant naughty infant!
Although I did glean a glint of fear in his eyes that nobody is listening because no one gives a shite (to much crime and cover up) and we sense what he’s really saying is ‘Give us ya money.’

Best advice to young clergy is to speak to a financial advisor and start a personal private pension. Few bishops encourage you to do so, as they say the sick and retired clergy fund will keep you – and of course they can control you. The sooner you start a pension the better. Then whatever way life takes you, you will have a degree of financial independence.

Like

Yes. Well said. Newly-ordained priests should be advised ro take out a mortgage as early as they can. Such advice should be part of theirfinal-year seminary education. It’s not a satisfactory arrangement to have your line manager also acting as your landlord. The Anglican system where clergy apply for positions (including that of bishop) and can move from diocese to diocese, and from country to country has much to recommend it.

Like

Anglican clergy are actually lay people as far as the Catholic Church is concerned , so different HR standards apply.

Like

Seminary formation will never do that as they want you to “rely on the Lord’s providence” which is code for “the bishop’s providence” and keep you infant like and tied to your spiritual father. But the parable of the buried talents should spur on young clergy to start putting money aside now for later life, and not to waste their money on fancy cars, eating out or ecclesiastical dress or ornaments.
There are tax savings to be made in investing in a pension. Given the modest stated income of clergy it would be difficult for them to get a mortgage in their own right. However, they could club together with a sibling or other relative (or indeed with other clerics) and contribute to a mortgage on a property. They would need to ensure that they are on the title deeds or their interest in the property is recorded in a declaration of trust. Even if they stay the course (and I don’t know what the statistics are for that) it would be reassuring to know that you have not to go cap in hand your bishop. If they leave then they would have funds to establish themselves in life and retrain.

It is heartening to see the disrespect for the RCC episcopal hierarchy shown in the above comments. By all accounts it’s a realistic and legitimate appraisal by clergy, and the disrespect totally warranted. The need for independent financial advice in anon@9:28’s comment is a must.
I firmly believe that the current exodus from the priesthood would become a flood if more priests had financial independence or a viable alternative profession, and not just for financial reasons.
Many priests ARE aware just how false and unfounded are the RCC’s claims, but ‘ham-strung’ by dependency, console themselves with ‘pastoral’ social service good works: the decent ones that is. The others? Well we’re certainly hearing plenty about them in the press and +Pat’s blog.

Clerical pension pots are screwed because the returns are shite.

Anglican Bishop of Willesden Pete Broadbent (suffragen/auxiliary), who will be 69 next month, has announced his resignation in September, one year before he is required to step down on reaching 70. He has said it is because he is too pale, too male and too stale, in the light of Black Lives Matters. He hopes his successor will be a black woman. He has put himself forward to do a project for his boss the female Bishop of London for a year. Pete and his wife will leave his official residence and move to the family home in Ealing, not far from Chiswick! As a republican, he had made some unpleasant comments about members of the Royal Family and he has been rebuked by his former boss Bishop Richard Chartres, a friend of The Prince of Wales.

He distinguished this from no longer believing the church’s moral teachings. But, he did not probe: Might the lousy witness of so many priests and bishops be the problem? No, he suggested the lack of faith was “the bitter fruit of the dumbing down of our faith.” A friend likes to say that John Paul II was a Platonist, that for him if you believed rightly you were the virtuous person.
