DAY 2. WAS FR GAY SLATTERY ON TRIAL BEFORE A SECRET CANONICAL COURT OVER HOMOSEXUAL ACTIVITIES WITH CLONLIFFE SEMINARIANS?

Recently I was castigated by certain types, with their own agenda, for asking why Fr Gay Slattery suddenly disappeared from the priesthood 14 years ago.

I was accused of being like a Peruvian scavenger pulling apart the dead body.of a wonderful human being and one of the best priests that ever lived.

So today I have a few questions to ask of my accusers.

1. Was Gay Slattery dismissed for homosexual activity with seminarians when he taught them philosophy in Clonliffe seminary?

2. Gay Slattery was in charge of the 1 st to 3 rd years. Why was he put in charge of new and nervous 17 to 21 year olds? Were they like “lambs to the slaughter”?

3. Was Monsignor John Dolan approached by Clonliffe seminarians and told of their abuse? Did John Dolan act immediately or delay acting.

4. Was Slattery involved in the wider homosexual clerical clique in the Archdiocese of Dublin?

5. Was there a secret canonical trial of Gay Slattety who told him to go voluntarily or be defrocked?

6. Is it true that there was a large number of witnesses at this trial – former seminarians and ordained priests,?

7.  Did the new bishop of Cork Fintan Gavin, the then vice chancellor, preside over the trial as the chancellor Monsignor John Dolan had been a teaching colleague of Slattery’s in Clonliffe?

8. In view of the fact that it is practice not to make a priest who presided over the trial of a priest a bishop, because of the potential for scandal, how was Fintan made the bishop of Cork?

9. Was Slattery forbidden by the tribunal to be involved in any form of public ministry or to say Mass in public?

10.  Diarmuid Martin was the archbishop of Dublin at the time of the trial. Why did he keep this trial a secret when he has a reputation for making the sexual misbehaviour of priests known to the public? Was Diarmuid Martin compromised in this case as he was a fellow seminarian of Slattery’s in Clonliffe?

11. Why did Gay Slattery get a full, public priests funeral with the current archbishop, Dermot Farrell presiding?

12. Did Dermot Farrell know about Slattery’s trial and departure under a cloud, and if he did why did he preside at a “cover-up’ funeral?

13. Or has the Slattery case and trial been withheld from the new archbishop? And, if so, who decided to withold it from him?

14. Are the victims of Gay Slattery still suffering from depression, anxiety, flashbacks and post traumatic stress? What is the archdiocese doing for these victims?

Pat, there are a lot of questions asked by you and can only be asked because someone has given you information. Is this true? You seem to be inferring many strange activities of a sexual nature. Can these be validated. As a Dublin priest, I am shocked by the nature of the inferences you make. Can you prove any allegation(s)? I have never heard of any canonical trial re: Fr. Slattery. While my knowledge of him is very scant, I was never aware of any of this. Very strange. I wonder where the truth is?

Would you preside at the funeral of any perpetrator who committed heinous crimes? Woukd you offer the sacrament of penance of an abuser came to you before or after prison sentence? Re fintan Galvin, heard from friends that he was way too nice for a Bishop. So something wasn’t right when friend spoke.

I could hazard a guess here as to why Galvin was appointed a Bishop. This is to shut him up cos he knows where many skeletons are buried in rcc. He has knowledge and vital information as well.

Perhaps the +Aul Doll should issue a statement to clear up the mystery surrounding the sudden disappearance of Fr Slattery fourteen years ago.

When Fr. Slattery “retired” from ministry, that seemed to be the end of any involvement with the Diocese. He was unheard of and seemed to have moved on in his life. I heard nothing about him for 20 years or more and only ever knew of a suspected allegation but it was not known among most clergy. Genuinely, I am shocked…but perhaps shouldn’t be. Can we give 100% credence to all the allegations being now posited?

Slightly off topic but I just want to say; I have sympathy for the LGBT+ community who feel rejected by the Church. They hear stories then of alleged cliques of what they are shunned for.
There was a wonderful blessing of love in Germany recently. If priests want to bless love, just let them and say nothing more about it. What would Jesus do?

IF he was HIV positive he could easily control the RCC response. Imagine the media headline, “priest who has sex with seminarians is HIV positive”. Every single priest, seminarian and ex-seminarian from clonliffe would need to publicly produce their HIV status to prove their innocence.
Can it be that the dysfunctional gay cabal of Dublin is not a gay cabal, but a HIV positive Cabal? If so it may explain a lot more about the church’s lack of action.

Perhaps however the ability to expose people as HIV positive would give a lot of power. IF he was HIV positive and had slept with a list of people in authority that he could out as HIV positive it would allow him control much more.
IF it were a gay cabal then the person named may just deny the accusation, counter charge the accuser as being bitter (as the church does with ex-seminarians). But there would be no denying it if a bishop, or senior cleric were accused of being HIV positive. Eventually they would either need to produce blood results to the public or a church inquiry.

Priests who know too much are always treated with velvet gloves, plumb parishes, swanky funerals, hey the motto of the clerical club, ‘here no evil, see no evil, do no evil (yeah right).
Don’t piss off people to much though as they will start burning down churches and presbyteries like Canada and Chilie.

There is a secret canonical court room in a former presbytery in the City Centre. Not the one in Berkley Road which is used by the Marriage Tribunal. The Secret Canonical one is on the Southside, in Dublin 8.

Read a book on Goodbye, Good Men: How Liberals Brought Corruption into the Catholic Church.

Please note that I didn’t read or haven’t read the book. It was mentioned couple of times in church militant website as an essential reading in understanding rcc.

A Vincentian priest brought me to a ‘vocation’ weekend in iona Road(Glasnevin) years ago. It didn’t register with me to join the priesthood (Vincentian order).

I turned it down flatly explaining why cos issue of loneliness, communication problem being as a deaf person. Thank god I walked away from it.

Well you see Agnes it’s very simple. You have a better chance of coming out of a kangaroo court with something like justice than you do from a canonical court. In the latter the deciding factor is what is expedient.
The same principle decides on who was ordained. If you had enough dirt and would keep stum as the price of ordination, you would get it.
The bigger question is who the $#+& would want to be a Catholic priest in those circumstances? Or any in fact.
And thus the cycle of corruption continues…

Lots of talk about priests retiring. I know a number of priests who have retired before their time, and some of them I have a good deal of respect for. For various reasons they have decided to retire, some to lay down completely their ministry, and move on with their lives in various ways. And that does not always mean that there are questionable or inappropriate reasons and circumstances for their retirement. One priest I know retired at age 65 because he said that he just wanted to do other things, experience other things, and live a little before he died. What’s wrong with that ? I reckon he had well paid back his dues to his diocese for his training with 40 years faithful ministry, and it’s not as if he was remunerated that generously when he was ministering. Not that he expected that. In all these cases that I know about, especially the ones who have largely cut all ties with their diocese in order to retire, they have been facilitated by – yes, financial independence. Without that, most of these priests would not have been able to retire as they have done, unless they could find another reason such as ill health. In the case of the priest that I have mentioned, fortunately for him he was in receipt of a considerable family legacy when the last of his parents died in her 90s, and this enabled him to think about other possibilities. He is very aware of his good fortune in this. However, I’m not always suspicious of a priest who retires early, especially those who go on and live independently and enjoy their lives and take whatever opportunities that present themselves. I’m more wary of the ones who retire and end up living for decades as c/o or just MIA, still tied to the aprons strings of Holy Mother the Church and the Bishop, and are in receipt of huge amounts of money over the decades to keep them, perhaps even to keep them quiet ! I’d have respect for them if they did cut the apron strings and went off to do their own thing. There’s usually a story behind those kinds of early retirement. As for the others, such as my friend, good luck to them !

But against that background I have to wonder about the possible motivation 🤔 of what might be described as non abusive kindly helpful pastoral priests.
I suspect the motivation is more likely one of two probabilities.
A) They no longer wish to be associated as an “employee ” of a now much discredited organisation: they’ve recognised its abusive underbelly and want out of it.
and/or,
B) After the first ‘flush’ of naive youthful altruistic enthusiasm, they’ve come to realisation that the whole apparatus of the RCC is a sham, and that that their religious prayers and services including the Mass are a meaningless deceptive farrago.

Those of a selfless and caring integrity who have endured remaining despite such realisation, will have concentrated on and been consoled by their social pastoral activities. But with financial freedom to do so, many may decide they’ve done enough for others and it’s now time for themselves.

By and large I agree with you, with perhaps the exception that they necessarily think of the RCC as a sham by their retiring. I suggest that for many who are able to do so, by the time they get in to their 60s, they are just tired and bit disillusioned with some of the things that gone on in their Church and just wish to break away and do something else. I know that the priest I was talking about felt like that, was never able to get a sabbatical, was just having more and more parishes given to him, more and more work, at a time when most people begin to slow down. It’s a recipe for disaster, not only for the Church itself, but for the priests who are increasingly just given more and more to do and manage. No wonder so many take the opportunity to get out if and when they can. And, as we both say, having some financial independence really is crucial and gives some independence and autonomy in decision making. Most bishops will not let a guy go at, say, 65 and most certainly wouldn’t support him financially. So, if he’s going to do it he needs to have his own money.

You see, Agnes, the priests have a problem with sexuality of all sorts. Rather than seeing it as a gift and part of our humanity, they like to pretend they don’t have sexuality at all. Ask your parish priest which way he swings and see the reaction.

More recent experiences of the falling way of church attendance and the difficulty of trying to connect meaningfully with people, I was tempted to retire but simply kept going. Like other people – parents in particular – we cannot walk away when challenged: stay and work through the crises with professional, therapeutic and spiritual counselling. Now, my attitude is – I would retire before retirement age, not because I cannot hope, but it is increasingly hard to be creative and imaginative in a positive, nourishing way for myself and parishioners. Thus, while I remain, I will continue to be faithful to the ideals of priesthood I undertook all those years ago. Despite the cracked theology and repeat hate speech of Marge, the gospel of Christ is my grounding, hope and life sustenance….as it is for many of my confreres. Thank you MMM….

@1:23 I actually looked this up from interest but before the website knocked me out for being in Europe, I saw that CNN estimated the RC church in the US spent $300,000,000 in costs related to abuse (compensation and legal fees) in one year ALONE. @Magna Carta: I have had a thought about the promises priests make at ordination to obey the bishop. You have had many a run in where you have said that they have traded in their conscience and they deny that they have.
It seems to me that if they are making promises to obey someone but also saying to themselves that they won’t if it disagrees with their conscience, they are making these promises with at least a mental reservation, and so they don’t actually mean these promises at all.
What do you think?
I’m torn between thinking that it’s better they make them with a reservation and thinking that if they do they obviously have no conscience because otherwise they would be doing much more to change the church’s rampant criminality.

I suspect that very many ordinands to Roman Catholic priesthood don’t bother to reflect on what they are going to promise, usually to a bloated bishop. Nor would they particulary care if they did, such, peculiarly, is their eagerness for ordination to a priesthood Jesus did not found.

Do you remember the programme on BBC 1called Priest School? Thank you, Deaf Guy, for going right to the heart of the problem ( it’s touched on in the comments above). To be frank it’s a problem for monotheism because it’s a difficulty to have an all-powerful god and yet there are all sorts of cruel things going on.
I was struck by Francis’s description of the permissive will of God (although he was talking about this will allowing there to be different religions). I suppose the classic approach is to say that God allows these things because we have free will. But clerical sexual abuse is a real problem there, because each and every one has passed the church’s scrutiny, and the church has agreed their call. Seamus is of course right that you could betray god afterwards, but when you get people ordained who are clearly criminals and the whole hierarchy actively allowing them to abuse, you do have to ask what is going on here. The clergy aren’t providing any sensible explanation for this, and my view is they don’t have one. I also think this clearly indicates the RC church is not the Catholic Church because I’m not being hit in the eye by its holiness.
If you believe in God it is of course impossible for him not to be present, but I honestly think you have to do a better job of the stuff I mention than the clergy who comment here are doing.

I’m talking about when young at 7 or 8 years of age with no religion education to boot(Catholic).
Had no idea of who and what God is at that age. No concept of believing in God that time just seeing a bad tempered priest with nuns day to day daily basis in boarding school for deaf boys.
Just received HC there with no understanding of it nor did I receive any Catholic instruction there at that time. It was forced without any understanding of it.
Then it led me to think that the nuns and cbs used schools for
monetary purposes instead of charity (which is free) such as teaching for money cos it was private plus some state funded as well. I recall it was a private Catholic school for deaf boys in South Dublin as we had to pay for it as opposed to Cabra schools which was free. I understood why I was sent there cos nuns didn’t like Cabra cos they heard rumours of what’s going on there since 1858. This they told parents to go to other school which was fee paying one set up by Archbishop mc quaid. Why was it on charity basis cos its fee paying school which shouldn’t.
Once you strip rcc of their role in education and health such as schools and hospitals thus no handouts from the state. So its all about money in their minds. My ex school 1st one now sold off to developers and Nuns made millions cos its South Dublin.
At the end of the day, its never about religion or nor was there any Catholic teaching, its all the more about money to make their living as opposed to their charity work nor did they teach Catholic education. Its down to lay teachers on salary from dept of education. Nuns were getting off scot free cos they were using state resources as opposed to their own resources (fee paying school). That’s their mindset.
I give an example of this is maternity hospital on nuns land grounds which shouldn’t happen cos its all bout money for next 99 years or whatever the contract states.
The state should buy another land to fit in their maternity hospital plans into without any Catholic ethos cos they own it completely re land and in return of their investment is revenues coming from new maternity hospital in next 99 years instead of going to the nuns bank account as its a win win situation for the state.
Thats my experience in schools runs by religious orders.

One has to be very discerning and circumspect about who comes forward though!! And, I suspect Marge that you’d be in a long waiting list. There are some wonderful parishioners living their Christian vocation in our parishes. They inspire priests….God bless these biggest Christ-like people and our priests.

There are several things clear about’father’ from this comment. He is a queen, a crashing snob, sees himself as the boss, thinks laypeople inspire priests (although it’s not like any inspiration is going to go the other way), intolerant and just generally a nasty piece of work.
