FR SLATTERY UPDATE.

Two new comnents submitted by email:

COMMENT ONE

“Two former staff board members of clonliffe at the time of reports made to the board are now Bishops. + Paul Tighe and Bishop of Limerick + Brendan Leahy”

Tighe
Leahy

COMMENT TWO

“As a former seminarian and student of Clonliffe I never had any issues with Fr. Slattery, however it was very obvious to most that he had his ” favourites” and some of these ” friendships” did seem a little inappropriate or even obsessive….”

PAT SAYS

A priest who did a doctorate in Rome and spent a lot of time there once said to me:

“The way to get promotion in the Roman Catholic is to give your superior sexual favours and services”.

But another important way to get promotion is having the ability to keep quiet about all the horrors and scandals you come across.

DIARMUID MARTIN as archbishop of Dublin must have known all about the Slattery scandal.

And yet the man with a reputation for openness and transparency, kept the Slattery scandal quiet.

It is clear that Slattery had a weakness for teenagers and young men.

But the teenagers and young men he might have met in the last 14 years of his life were left totally ignorant of his “weakness”.

And, as the homily at the funeral made clear Fr Slattery continued to be a “priest in good standing” as far as the public was concerned.

Callan

And that image of him was fully confirmed ar his funeral Mass celebrated by the Dublin Moderator of the Curia, Monsignor Paul Callan and with the new archbishop, Dermot Farrell presiding in full choir dress.

Farrell

The Slattery scandal runs very deep and its roots go to a lot of interesting places.

Pat, are you the one who is jumping to conclusions without full information? I’m not sure what your inference is about Bishops Tighe and Leahy. Would you expand? Also, I’m wondering if Fr. Slattery spent the last 20 years in penance of some kind? Once he departed the Diocese, that seemed to be the end and now in his death his name surfaces. What in your opinion is the truth? The house you are living in seems quite spacious. The stained glass is very attractive and the changes are simple but appropriate. Maybe you were right to leave the Catholic Church and while you are to be somewhat admired, I believe many commenters would join you openly but the agenda is very hostile towards the church and often encouraged unnecessary humiliating and vitriol. I sometimescwinder if those who wholeheartedly agree with you have ever visited the Oratory or financially supported your ministry? Jesus saud: “The labourer deserves his/her wage.. “!!

Like

I am just saying that many more knew about GS than we thought.
I cannot see GS spending decades in “penance”.
God alone will judge him.
I’m more interested in how the scandal was handled and in the characters involved in that.
Thats not actually stained glass as I could not afford that. It is coloured sheets and strips of lead, well applied.
As a rational man I have known and admired good priests. And I know of the good done by some in the church.
But I believe the organisation itself is deeply corrupt and very many priests and bishops are corrupt.

I think your chapel looked much better before. Your current setup seems to be much more influenced by Benedict XVI than I’m sure you’d accept. Put that celebrants chair back behind the altar!

Ought anybody be surprised about Dermot Farrell?? Look at what was exposed in the Maynooth he supposedly reformed? And the priests and ex-priesys he recommended for ordination… recently we have the Ger scandal in Killaloe, the Cocaine on the presbytery scandal, the rates of young priests quitting, relihan and the money resting in God-knows what account, lynch & the mass walk outs down in Cloyne, the Belfast hospital chaplain and the nurse, the number of men stuck as transitional deacons since he recommended ordination.

Like

Does anybody know where Slattery was for the last decade and more of his life, and what he was doing ? It does seem strange that he had disappeared from the landscape and then in death suddenly reappears for the full slap up clerical funeral. It’s a strange conjunction. I would have thought that a quiet funeral without all the knobs on stuff that the Archbishop’s attendance suggests would have been more prudent and would not have attracted all the attention it is now getting. I’m not surprised, because the church and bishops simply don’t understand public relations, and don’t get the right advice before making their decisions. No other business, organisation, institution would be so lackadaisical and careless about such matters. Just shows you what amateurs they really are.

Bishop Pat, You do not want the Truth as it would not sit comfortable with you.
Killaloe Dioceses made it very clear that Ger and jerry will be addressed.
So Jerry Carey and Ger Fitzgerald will both go through a Canonical Procedure however like civic society so the RCC has to work with it as well as Canon Law.
So if someone has a medical problem then the issues cannot be addressed until they as the Bishop to come back into Ministry and give them their faculties.
However as you would have seen on the Killaloe appointments they are up to 2022 yes 2022 and Jerry and Ger are not even mentioned and if they were on sabbatical it would have stated that.
Jerry Carey will most likely be dismissed or asked to resign as the Evidence is there he is convicted Sexual man so that will be straight forward.
Ger Fitzgerald is different as were is the evidence you will say text messages but the Guards cannot check the mobiles as there is no criminal investigation as there are No threats, No placing anyone in fear or alarm or any racist, sexual orientation, religious, sexual words to confirm a criminal investigation so this is a Canon Law case and it will come down to what Fintan thinks best and I guess he will not want Ger Fitzgerald in his diocese.
So once they return and to quote Fintan “how long is a piece of string” then canon Law will kick in, Now you must have seen none of their names are on the Clergy Changes.

The Bishop Paul Swarbrick will be announcing it mid week about the changes in Blackpool the Official announcement that Saint Monica’s will be closed and possible the Holy Family too.
However Bishop Paul did not know under Canon Law he must consult the lay faithful and clergy.
So no one is sure what he will now do take the risk and close it and hope billing’s does not report him to Rome or start the canonical procedure for parish closures.
Clergy appointment are due this week as well.
We will see what Canon Lawyers advise him however it will close as the Parish has no money.
They will need to watch as they have been left a legacy for St. Monica’s and St. John’s.
Holy Cross maybe told to go to Sacred Heart or the new curate maybe get sent to Sacred Heart and Canon Dewhurst and him will serve the North.
Canon Law has held up the decisions.

So pissed off and so great is their love for the church that (so far) eight churches have been burnt (razed) to the ground in Canada – now that’s what I call the senses fidelium and Ecclesia Semper Reformanda.
When churches in Westminster, Birmingham and Dublin burn too that my friends will be a happy day as it will signal the cry and time of reform.

Like

The actual arsonists haven’t been found yet but it definitely looks like it’s kicked off as a result of the discovery of mass graves.
On Canada Day another ten churches were vandalized with red hand prints – presumably representing blood on the church’s hands.
I totally agree that it’s not the way, but honestly I have been expecting some kind of retaliation like this to the church for years. Their response to the mass graves has been described by the Canadian media as ‘stopping short’ of apologising, and like the church’s response to every revelation of its shameful behaviour is clearly inadequate.
Oh – the churches being burned are on indigenous land.
I’m not 1:42 by the way, my own view is the international community should use everything in its power to force the church to behave itself. Who the hell ignores a letter from the UN?

Like

Absolutely. However burning churches will unfortunately feed into their false narrative that they are being persecuted, while what is actually happening is retaliation for rape, criminal cover up and in this case, colonialism. Removing the church’s charitable status would be a far more effective way of bringing them to heel. Then they would be giving something back in taxes – the mental illness caused by clerical abuse must have cost the state a huge amount.
In fact if the church had any intention of reparation for their history they would be offering to give up this status.

Like

Who is burning these churches in Canada?

Can you really look forward to that kind of arson and violence as a way to reform anything?

Surely anything brought about by evil means will end up evil itself?

The real reform will come when people walk away from the RCC, peacefully and governments treat churches like any other business or corporation?

Bishop Pat – they burnt churches in Chilie because Pope Francis had appointed a child abuser bishop, known to everyone, except Pope Francis seemingly.
The sight of churches burning grabbed his attention and brought him to his senses.
The Times reports today (World Section) that the Catholic Church refuses to apologise for the murders and burial in unmarked graves of close to 1000 children from Native Indian families.
Of course violent acts are not ideal – but they are less an evil than the murder of a child and express the burning sense of injustice these families feel.
Wasn’t Jesus being violent when he drove out the traders from the temple?
I don’t condone this violence but I do understand it and think that as a last resort it can bring about lasting change and reform.

@6:24 churches belong to the diocese unless some other trust has been arranged, and the diocese will dispose of its assets as it sees fit. The opinions of parishioners are only ‘consulted’.
The church will also happily use any legal mechanism it feels like to assert its ownership.
Even in the famous case of St Stanislaus Kostka church in St Louis, where there was some binding contract with the city and the parishioners actively fought the diocese, the diocese still tried to keep hold of the building even though they were wrong. The case was complicated by issues of control of what went on in the parish but I think if you read about it you will find how dioceses behave and lose the idea that the church in any way belongs to the people.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Stanislaus_Kostka_Church_(St._Louis,_Missouri)
If you give money to the church for a building they consider it theirs. Even if you take legal steps to stop that they will fight you with their usual tactics of wearing you out, giving you the runaround, and building up the costs to ruin you.

Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations deferred due to Delta variant
Varadkar rejects claims that in an ‘off-the-cuff’ remark he had cancelled the ceremonies
Thu, Jul 1, 2021, 12:32 Updated: Thu, Jul 1, 2021, 16:28
Patsy McGarry, Marie O’ Halloran

The Catholic primate Archbishop Eamon Martin has described as “grossly disrespectful” and “almost cavalier” the manner in which churches were told this week that Baptisms, First Communions, and Confirmations should be deferred due to the Delta variant of Covid-19.

“It’s just very disrespectful the way this was done,” he said. “A journalist’s tweet. The Tánaiste dismissively saying `oh,they’re off, that was how we were told about the change in direction. The manner of communication in this case was grossly disrespectful. We are extremely disappointed by this,” he said.

All of it made him think it was time “for a proper dialogue about the place of faith and its expression in public life and that’s something I’d be very very open to.”

A statement, posted on the Government website on Wednesday, stated that “religious ceremonies such as Baptisms, First Holy Communions and Confirmations should not take place at this time. Further advice will follow on resumption of these ceremonies when it is safe to do so .”

Speaking on RTÉ Radio I’s News at One on Thursday Archbishop Martin said there was “a lot of frustration and deep disappointment and indeed anger” in response to the statement.

7.17: Nurse, I hope you treated patients with empathy and compassion and as human beings capable of being healed or making improvements in their lives in dealing with the many faceted realities of mental health illnesses. My sister up until 2008 was treated for depression with a barrel full of medication on a daiky basis. The medication ruined her. Horrendous. When I witnessed the “care” she didn’t receive, my family called for a conference with her medical team. I soght medical legal advice which I brought to the table and I can truthfully say the team was terrified with my insights, notes I had written after each visit to my sister. Within a few weeks of that conference my sister was assigned a new (lady) psychiatrist who, for the first time in 12 years, saw my sister as someone with the potential to be healed. Her kindness and empathy as a doctor enabled my sister to gradually improve and reduce her medication intake. Today she is a very contented woman, no thanks to the “professionals” who supposedly cared for her. I’m sorry I didn’t take a case against the hospital and team. I witnessed so many people in that hospital being treated as “non-people”. There were times when ny sister was kuteralky strapoed diwn, given electric shock treatment. Utterly disgusting. Thus my contention that all abuse is morally repugnant. And, for me, when any person is not cared for properly, this constitutes abuse. Sexual, emotional, mental, physical and spiritual abuse is repulsive and perpetrators shoukd face justice and any person or institution who covers up should equally face civil justice for reckless endangerment.

The Brothers of Charity and The St. John of God religious orders were involved in running a number of psychiatric hospitals in Ireland.
According to Eoin O’sullivan and Ian O’donnell, “a 1966 report on the future of psychiatric hospitals claimed the number of patients detained involuntarily in Ireland “appears to be the highest in the world”.”Psychiatric hospitals, the single greatest contributor to coercive confinement in mid-20th century Ireland, where tens of thousands were involuntarily detained over the decades, have not been subjected to any detailed scrutiny. Available records reveal that conditions and quality of care were appalling.” ” An inquiry into the treatment of psychiatric patients is urgently required to correct the view that cruelty and abuse of power were the preserve of the religious orders. It would reveal the uncomfortable extent to which families and government bodies were enmeshed in a system of coercive confinement the legacy of which continues to reverberate today.”

LOL you are talking to the nurse who has blown the whistle twelve times and written to the Care Quality Commission five times.
You see as professionals we know how to act and escalate concerns.
I would actually be very concerned about your ongoing attempt to divert attention from your church onto mental health institutions. People with a conscience are rightly horrified if they find their religious group has gone off the rails – are you also the person who keeps asking where the social workers were?
The trouble is that churches attract people with personality disorders, because they provide a clear role for them. If you want to see textbook psychopathy watch the documentary Deaf Guy recommended about Oliver O’Grady.
If you are still finding it difficult to respond in a way which is suitably horrified or if you are getting feelings of wanting to kill me, or no feelings at all, or even if you genuinely think the church is being treated unfairly, get professional help. It is scary but you can learn to feel the emotions and empathy that other people feel.
Best wishes.

8.11: I’m not disputing your insights but 2008 is not the last century when my sister and many like her were treated by doctors and nurses as “non-persons” – medication is best was the attitude which prevailed for decades, sadly. I fiubd myvsister alnist undressed left lying on the floor in a filthy, dusty room (which looked like it wasn’t cleaned for days), one afternoon and the nurse on the ward said, “we’re used to that”..I reported her and I can recount many horrendous stories of men and women who were treated similarly to my sister. I am not diverting any attention away from the Church’s abuse history. In fact,on 3 occasions, I reported to all relevant authorities my suspicions about people’s behaviour and 2 were taken to court for awful acts of abuse. Your condescension is unnecessary and rather distasteful. I have no “personality disorders”, thank God and having studied counselling, bereavement counselling particularly, empathy, kindness, self awareness and kindness are essential qualities in my work. Incidentally I’m not the one who keeps asking where are the social workers – Pat usually questions their work and relevance!! Though whistleblowers are essential in highlighting all abuse and corruption, isn’t it morally repugnant when the institutions protect their own? I was threatened by one person whom I reported and was blackened by his friends and “club base” supporters, even by a cleric supporter of said person. Enough said.

Easiest way to get promoted to a Bishop is keep shutum & keeping the lid on or alternatively, sexual favours.. What does it say about other bishops here? Just wondering 🤔🤔

Go figure re tighe and leahy. I was surprised to see Tighe name. He was odd re video on him and lot of hand waving etc. Impression that I got from him wasnt convincing.

But we need facts and figures on other members of cloniffe board who sat on the same time as Tigle and Leahy. Board has to consists of five members or more or less…

Re violence, its not acceptable re violence. But in our case where we’re locked up in a boarding school and we can’t get out. Sometime violence was used to fight back sexual abusers. We did it before when they approached us at nights as it stopped afterwards. That was the only way to get out message across to the abusers.

Apart from that, outside four walls or outside boarding school, no need for it.

Only way to get rcc attention is stop giving them money. They will consider it as theirs (using other people monies) without any OVERSIGHT or any accountability of where that money is going etc.

Poster at 7.11pm summed it up well re rcc and their use of money(other people monies). Such no thing as community if comes to that.
