DEENIHAN CAUSES MORE TROUBLE IN MEATH!

Deenihan on left with Okolo and Smith

The new bishop has sold developers a plot of land for more than €1million that had been gifted to the Church.

Ashbourne, Co. Meath, is where a man called Ned Nulty signed over land he owned close to Old Killegland graveyard to the diocese with the stipulation it was to be used only if the graveyard needed to be extended or priests need a new parochial house. But Deenihan has sold developers the land for more than €1million.

Mr Nulty died in 1998, aged 78, and is buried in Old Killegland cemetery. The land was zoned residential but in a submission to the Meath County Development Plan (CDP), five councillors proposed zoning the lands to open space with the intention of creating a public park there and when this motion was discussed it was voted through.

However on May 12, Deenihan disposed of it to a development company called Killegland Estates while it was still able to be built on. Angry locals only discovered this when a planning notice appeared on an entrance gate to the land earlier last week causing fury.

A sales document shows it sold for €1,050,000. The seller is named as St Finian’s Trust, a limited company which administers the affairs of the Diocese of Meath and has Bishop Deenihan listed as a director along with a number of priests in the diocese. The move sparked fury among politicians and parishioners as their village did not see a cent of the cash for the site that was left for their benefit.

Relatives of the late Mr Nulty still live in the area but did not want to comment on the sale. However, a source said: ‘I doubt they are happy over it, anyone who knew Ned would know he wanted the lands to be used for parish needs and I’d imagine he would have wanted any money from this sale to go the people of Ashbourne.’

Several of the councillors who wanted to use the lands to provide a park are furious. Fine Gael’s Suzanne Jamal said: ‘This has come out of the blue, it was land that was there for years and years and we applied for it to be zoned differently to serve the community needs.

‘We have no influence over the proposed application, I am just an ordinary Joe Soap, when this arises all I can do is make a submission expressing my feelings and supporting my constituents and I intend to do that.’

Aisling O’Neill, of Sinn Féin, said: ‘The church never built on it, so we as a group of five councillors put in for a green space for the community but the church is after selling it to the developers. My opinion is the developers should have been aware of the county development plan and aware of the community’s plans for that area so we are going to fight that planning application.’

PAT SAYS:

If Mr Nulty left the land for an extended graveyard or the building of a parochial house then the land should have been used ONLY for those purposes.

Surely these instructions are the conditions of the will?

I think it is VERY HIGH HANDED and INDECENT of Deenihan to ride a horse abd coaches through the wishes of a deceased man with family still in the parish of Ashbourne.

But this is the kind of behaviour people have come to expect from Tom Deenihan.

There was a great sigh of relief when he left Cork – especially from the clergy of Cork and Ross.

Mind you, the clergy of Meath are generally a snobbish lot and maybe God has sent Deeniham to them as a penance?

During Francis’ visit to Ireland the retired bishop of Meath, Michael Smith, was standing in the foyer of a Dublin hotel and Deenihan was standing behind him. A parish priest of another diocese went over to Smith and said to him: “Your crucifixion is standing behind you”. Smith replied: ” I know”.

Come back John Charles. All is forgiven!

AND WHO SAYS THEY ARE JUST A LITTLE BUNDLE OF CELLS?

If it was land left to the Church, what right did Shinner councillors have to turn it into a park? Let the council buy a field and turn it into a park if it wants to, but don’t go round seizing private property as if we are in China.

Tom Deenihan has no time for Mullaney’s conquests and ambitions. Tom in fairness was displeased with Mullaney’s approach to end the Maynooth Scandal. Mullaney is sidelined.

I’m sure Nulty would be delighted that he himself is taking the punishment intended for paedo priests and the church that protected and enabled them.

If Mr Nulty qualified, in the way stipulated, the transferance of his land, then there is no question that Deenihan acted against Mr Nulty’s express wish.

Very worrying. If the covenant did expressly state what the land should be used for then the transaction might be voidable. However, I know from another diocese they have been successful in setting aside on restricted funds and applied to the charities regulator for approval. For instance in Dublin the Trust set up for the building of a new cathedral was set aside as the diocese is not going to build a new cathedral so the instrument was varied to allow the funds be applied to some similar charitable activity. Someone should query with the regulator and possibly send an FOI request to see any and all correspondence between the charity and the regulator regarding disposing of the land and on what condition.

Why didn’t Deenihan sell the land to the council for use as a park, that would have generated funds and honoured the donors wishes?

Everyone was critical when the Drumcondra Investor mafia consortium sold Clonliffe for pittance to the GAA for the greater good – promise of social housing et. al., now we are hearing objections about the Church maximising the value of assets – like any prudent person – you of course want the maximum – remember they are TRUSTEES not their personal effects being flittered away?

They should have consulted with Coddle Investment Management and sold that parcel of land like Drumcondra was – car boot sale style.

+Pat, a very interesting post. I am going to suggest that in the future another parcel of land to be put on sale by Bishop Deenihan will be the landholding in which the notorious Silverstream Priory is located.
When the community ultimately fails, because it has been set-up to fail (because you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear) by Deenihan. The fact that a non-ordained to be appointed superior tells you everything you need to know about the state of that community. It is also interesting that none of Benedictine Congregations were interested in coming to its aid, because nobody is interested in the synchronistic madness of its founder, Dom Kirby, who is a man of considerable talent – a characteristic found in all master manipulators with questionable morality.
Following its suppression by a Decree of the Holy See, the property will theoretically become the property of the Holy See which in reality is the local Ordinary, Deenihan.
If the land is held in Trust and/or a company — Deenihan will then seek to obtain in the usual manner legal title (on behalf of the diocese) to the property, so it can be sold for development.
Am I being cynical? Of course not — I am being realistic. There has been a significant amount of housebuilding in the Stamullen area. The land surrounding Silverstream Priory is ideally suited to further development. In a rising market that land would attract a significant premium all to be used for the greater good of the Diocese of Meath.
There are many priests in the Diocese of Meath who will welcome the suppression of Silverstream. In fact, I would positively suggest it will beget a rare moment of unity between Bishop Deenihan and his priests.

Like

Yes. In fact Kirby’s book, Private Revelations Whispered from the Tabernacle to a Priest who Totally Wants to be Identified (or whatever it’s called), should have led to the suppression of the monastery on its own.

You can get the sight of his probate re contents of his will in probate office. Probably likely not clear cut re his intentions cos you will have to specify it more clearly. I’m certain rcc solicitors had seen it and gave green light to Bishop.

Its old story re wills and lands, money. If you want to specify it, better would be that land or whatever land it be to be explicitly stated as ring fenced for community. So they as rccc can’t use it for their own benefits.

I have seen it in one charity accounts where they must state that funds break down into non ringfenced and ringfenced funds.

Well said of course the RCC solicitors would be all over it.
Bishop Tom is a Priest not a building surveyor or a banker.
The family of the late gentleman would be informed of the changes and seek their permission.
The Church has Solicitors and Finance guys working for it all the time.
Who was paying for the maintenance of the ground likely the Dioceses.
Just now the Church has too many buildings and land and it needs to go as it is surplus to requirements as churches can drain all resources more so if they are listed and not fit for purpose.
Bishop Tom is only ONE Trustee and also the regulators would need to be informed.
Well done Bishop tom for getting that kind of money in a pandemic and property values down.

In England you can get hold of a copy of anyone’s will once probate has been granted online for a fee of £1.50. This will provide you with an electronic scan of the will and the grant of probate showing the gross and net value of the estate at death. I am not sure what the process is in NI or Ireland and if it so easily available.

Hi +Pat,

The sale of land gifted to the church is not per se wrong. The sale of land gived to the church for defined reasons can be wrong.

The question becomes what Tommy will do with this €1m. Will he use the funds to open a graveyard elsewhere? Probably not because these days this is typically a function of the local authority. Will he use the money to build new presbyteries? Probably not because the diocese of Meath has enough. Will he use the money to refurb the existing presbyteries – perhaps. If he completes the latter action he will have indirectly fulfilled the criteria for the donation under trust.

So basically, multiple priests in Meath can smile this morning at the luxury coming their way.

I suggest that any documents etc that you have be referred immediately to the Charities Regulator so that Tommy is forced to spend the money on refurbishing presbyteries. This will dash his existing plans and highlight the existing luxuries. I say, let the people know where their collection plate goes.

Parishioners leave legacies for all kinds of reasons but primarily do so out of gratitude for the blessings they received through their local church community. It is quite cynical and incredulous that you try to attribute sinister motivations to the donor. Cop yourself on. In the past 2 years parishioners have left a percentage of their estate to our Church – for the ongoing financial maintenance of our Church as is necessary but also for whatever will benefit the upbuilding of the parish community. The Finance Committe have a 100% say for the projects upon which the legacy will be spent. The donors were two wonderful parishioners and all of uscwete absolutely taken by surprise as they were very quiet and private people and had families. Only a cynical, begrudging fool and hater like you could stupidly and ignorantly proposition such a scenario. Good people don’t need to bargain with God for their place among the chosen ones!! “Concerned in Stamullen” is very rightly concerned about Deenihan’s likely plans should the Holy See listen to reason and suppress the Silverstream mess outright.

Back in May 2020, developer Alcove Ireland Eight announced plans to build some 645 units (houses and apartments) in Stamullen, with 184 in the Silverstream area alone (110 houses, 74 apartments).

The applications would seem to be stalled at the moment, but with no end in sight for the Dublin housing crisis, huge development in the Silverstream area is inevitable — and extremely lucrative.

I predict that, in the end, the real winner will not be Kitty Kirby and her kittens, nor the whistleblower, but Big Tom D€€nihan.

If you look in the financial statements of the Priory for FY 2016 you will see note 8 to the accounts there was an addition to Land and Buildings of 1.3 million Euro. Subsequent accounts also note additions to Land and Buildings up to 2019 when an additional 350k was added to their Land and Buildings on the balance sheet and notes at 11. By 2019 their Land and Buildings were valued at 2.4 million Euro. In terms of accounting rules, legally if they are not the title holder they can not reflect this as an asset. They would have a note about lease commitments – it is clear this is not leased but owned by the Priory and as valued in the latest published accounts is around 2.4 million Eur for Land and Buildings.

“Cui bono?” yes, I am legitimately concerned because I read in a newspaper article that Silverstream Priory is located “on 15 idyllic acres of countryside”. You can get a lot of houses on 15 acres of land. I understand the estate is actually larger. The poster at 5.15 pm is incorrect as the property was purchased by the monks from the Visitation Nuns.

Like

5:30 is correct. The nuns sold the property to pay for their nursing home care. The monks own the property through money raised from donations. It is not the property of the diocese.

5:14, see, for instance, the Silverstream Priory newsletter for Fall 2017:
“With the acquisition of our property, the significant works undertaken and completed, and the arrival of new man, 2016 was a year rich in blessings for Silverstream Priory”.
The Tablet, on 8 October 2020, reported:
“[I]n 2016-19, the community spent more than €2.5m (£2.27m) in purchasing the property and renovating it”.
So, yes, there would be a very rich windfall for the Diocese of Meath.

Like
