THE WOMEN WHO PRIESTS CAST OFF.

One of the groups of people I have worked with in my 45 ministry to date – are those women who have had relationships with priests and then become priestly cast-offs.

One of the first women in this position I met was also the mother of an Irish religious order priest’s three children.

At the time was working in Birmingham diocese and the woman came up against the coldness of the then archbishop Courve de Meuville.

Having got nowhere with that particular snob she contacted that other snob of the time – the Westminster monk and archbishop Basil Hume.

He was as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike.

So decided to send him a shock for Christmas.

We bought a large doll, dressed it as a priest and sent it by courier to Hume which included the note:

“Basil, would you please put the enclosed baby priest in your cathedral crib this Christmas in remembrance of all the priest’s babies that are denied and forgotten by the Roman Catholic Church”.

KILDARE AND LEIGHLIN

Another woman I met was made pregnant by a priest in the diocese of Kildare and Leighlin.

Her and I travelled on a cold winter’s day to meet the bishop at the time, Larry Ryan.

Ryan

Ryan sat as far away from us as he could in a large room

We arrived drenched from the windy rain.

He never offered us as much as a cup of tea.

He listened but said nothing.

He did nothing.

Vincent Doyle’s website attests to this phenomenon. It has been going on for centuries. From 1139 onwards, clergy wives were treated callously and appallingly. They and their children were often cast out on the streets and many of these women had to resort to prostitution to survive. There is and has been a deeply imbedded misogyny in clerical culture, very much reinforced by clerical celibacy. Is it time to move on from the 12th century?

Like

I think it’s particularly cruel on a child when a priest decides to hide behind his collar and not acknowledge his child publicly. It gives no glory to the Lord and morally invalidates his ministry.

Like

The Vatican has guidelines for priests who break their vows of celibacy and father children.
The document requests that a cleric who has fathered a child leaves the priesthood to “assume his responsibilities as a parent by devoting himself exclusively to the child”.

Like

@ 11.44, the Vatican has ‘guidelines’, and ‘requests’ that a priest who has fathered leave the priesthood to look after his child??

Didn’t Dear Oscar speak of such priests in the Ballad of Reading Goal? I’m sure he did: the experience of betrayal had become a bitter bugbear for him in the closing years of his life. And what richer subjects for such musings than Roman Catholic priests?
How does it go? ‘Each man betrays the thing he loves. The coward does it with a kiss…’ (an allusion to Iscariot), and the priest with a heroic claim to sacred vocation first? Or was it a hurried walk-on-by? You know, another allusion, to the priest in the Good Samaritan?
I can never remember these things precisely, but priests this sabbath could do worse than reflect on Oscar’s long lament: if they pay attention, they’ll catch their Dorianesque features in its still, murky waters.
Just musing, like. 😀

Funny, but it just occurred to me that ‘self-serving priest’ is a tautology.

In my experience most of them are Pat. Out of 5 priests I have known well over the years, three were gay, two straight, one celibate.

Pat at 4:40 – Surely it is now clear that the so-called ‘faithful’ will allow a priest to do whatever he pleases and will shower unconditional praise on him while he does so. I look forward to the days which are surely coming, when all RC priests are tagged by law, so that the state knows exactly where they are.

6:59, firstly priests should not be pursuing any woman. Secondly, women should not be having affairs with priests. Women haven’t fallen off the back of lorries. We live in a feminist, should be equalist, age.
The woman didn’t have any consideration for the Church when she entered into a relationship with a priest. When the relationship ended, then all of a sudden she wants engagement with the Church.
There were double standards from the priest. There was also double standards from the woman.
If this story can help other women going forward, can we get a clear message out there; Do not get involved in a relationship with a priest. A priest remaining a priest is not a commitment. Actions speak louder than words. Get the priest to resign if he truly wants a relationship.

You are incredibly naive. And I doubt whether you’re as self-controlled as your comment implies.

Falling in love isn’t a choice: it just happens. Saying ‘no’ to oneself, in that circumstance, can be impossible. So telling women not to get involved in relationships with priests can be as daft as your telling yourself, as you do in those ludicrous acts of contrition, that ‘I will not sin again’.

Life isn’t this straightforward; that simple.

What about the men who are cast of by gay clergy who go through serial gay relationships, often with younger men, and when bored or find something more interesting when they are out cruising, or at the sauna, or on the internet, and then move on ….. ? It happens all the time. Just keep an eye on the people your priest is hanging out with, who are staying over at the priest’s house, new friends that he is going of on holiday with, and you will notice that they change with monotonous regularity as his taste changes….

Like

8.39: How many such liaisons have you had with priests? Sadly, it’s a trademark in the gay world: when you’re not in a committed relationship, it’s literally “have as many as you desire” attitude. I once knew a gay couple who shocked me, that after 20 years, in their boredom, they sought out frequent casual liaisons, often on a nightly basis. That to me was very wrong. You, sir, must have little to do with your time if you notice “all” these happenings!!! Were you ever propositioned or did you ever have a go at such behaviour? Methinks you are quite proficient..

My favourite bible story is the one where Jesus tells the apostles that if the church is found to be engaging in forbidden sex or covering up crime, they must immediately point to society or the Anglicans.

Oh dear @ 1014, full of attitude and condemnation. What bother is it of yours what your gay friends get up to, and how many partners they might have ? Or are you the type that is judgmental about everybody and everything ? Your gay friends have not made a public promise of celibacy, and do not hold themselves out to be celibate. Priests do, and whether they be gay or straight, if they habitually go off and break their promise, then that is worthy of condemnation. So, stick to condemning and being judgemental about those who are duplicitous and lie, like priests who break their promise of celibacy, and don’t worry your silly little head about people who live their lives in the open and honestly, even if you don’t like what they get up to.

It is very morally wrong if and when any woman is literally dumped or ignored by any man after a relationship which ends up with a pregnancy. Any man, priest or otherwise, who walks away from their responsibility, is a moral coward and lacking basic human decency. I believe if a priest is responsible for a child being brought into this world and is proven by DNA testing (if requured), his Bishop must ensure that he takes full moral, financial and parental responsibilities. There cannot be any equivocation about these obligations. I know of many women who are left totally abandoned by men on the news of a pregnancy. All men, priests included, must be held accountable. Bishops must have a clear policy in these situations and while not liable to pay any financial outlay, support should and must be offered to the woman in her pregnancy and beyond. But, certainly the priest must be held to account.

There is clear policy however the Bishop is usually the last to know.Priests constantly LIE to their Bishops “Oh Your Grace it was not me” or ” My lordship they are mistaken or liars”.
The clergy that become daddies should leave and be honest with themselves.
Support is offered to All and not very often does Bishop Pat give a compliment to the RCC however he let his guard done when he said Bishop Fintan offered help to Yvonne.
I laugh when I see the ex clergy going about doing funerals with the collar on and it is a sick joke from them and like Bishop pat they were ALL trained by the RCC but they like to forget that.
Daly was bad however he still paid for Bishop Pat’s education.

3:24 it would help if you tried to use some punctuation but I think I understand your barely literate comment to say that all former clergy were trained by the RC church. If that is the case perhaps they should find out what the others are doing, since they seem to be the ones losing clergy.

Calix is an association of Catholic alcoholics, drug addicts, and family members and friends affected by addiction, who are maintaining their sobriety through participation in their Catholic faith and a 12 Step program. That’s a recipe for meeting endless alcoholic priests with what Seamus quaintly calls ‘vocation anxiety’.

Never mind. These things are best left to the unfathomable wisdom of God, and the unscrutable moral sensibilities of seminary formators.

The end always justifies the means, doesn’t it? Even if those ends mean that others are left to struggle with the meanness of oth…

It’s all so very complicated, isn’t it? Just ask Basil Hume, and that other guy. I’m sure God was able to sort out things with these two in the end, and the very many other priests who followed them on that well-worn sacerdotal trail to Calvary.

he should have told you all TWO weeks ago when it was announce he was going to Carlisle so I am glad to read that he finally told you all this weekend so maybe he will place it on his Social media accounts and in next weeks Bulletin.
I do hope Father Etienne enjoys Carlisle as there will still be room there for his Latin Masses however the new guidance coming from Rome is expected to say they have to be in one parish in a dioceses and some Bishops are saying not in theirs.
father Etienne has to be congratulated in his decorating, carpets and so on however that is “old” Church as the parishioners should be doing that.
As for Robert Billing he is doing Canon Law so likely wanting a role at a tribunal rather than a Parish.
Father Etienne has no time for this blog or it’s Editor and will continue to pray for the Editor.

Fr. Billing has been a Priest in Lancaster Diocese for at least 15 years and has dodged Parishes from day one. Bishops secretary x2 and now 3 years Doctorate. How many Canon Lawyers does the Church need? Our mother Archdiocese has at least 9 and our own Diocese several. Priests like him need to be moved into Parishes instead of the Diocese spending fortunes on training that isn’t required. Yes I know that Fr D does not like people using his first name after Father – he needs to loosen up and stop being so stuffy. His new PP will help develop him. Our Diocese has the Christ the Sovereign King order in Preston, so Latin Mass likers can go there if that’s their bag. No probs.

I read that, closely. Thank you for its provision.

The problem isn’t falling in love here; it is the f****d-up nature of Catholic Church teaching that leads these parties, the priest in particular, to think that one of the most natural, and normal, things in life, falling in love, is morally scandalous and a possible peril to the soul.

If the article is further accurate, then your advising women to be on their guard about priests is often pointless, as well as a touch mysogynistic (why should just the woman have a care?), since many of these relationships tend to creep up on the parties through emotional bonds that are inevitably woven between the two in counselling.

Some time ago, a contributor to this blog surmised that much, if not most, of the anger, even hatred, I express here for this institution came from MY letting it exercise such moral control over my life at a more impressionable stage of it. I didn’t respond then, but I am now: YOU WERE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.👏

I should NEVER send a child of mine to ANY faith school, but in particular, one under the heel of the Roman Catholic institutional church, that he or she might avoid being forced-fed its doctrinal swill, especially that which glorifies priests.

its deeply disturbing to see Larry Ryan ( i never heard his name until now) sat so far away from them as he could in a large room. No tea was given. It sounded to me a very cold fish.

Thats very unchristian behaviour coming from them. Its quite staggering to see this, where was their so called “compassion or humility”. They are not of christ.

Brief summary of RCC to date as regards to their behaviour and hiding behind the legal wall.

1. Introduction of celibacy in 1100AD to stop priest’s wives from claiming their assets such as house or land or money. All that money goes to diocese or bishop instead of priest’s wife or GF.

2. Marriage sacrament came into being around in 1200AD. Wondering if it was designed to generate monies??

3. RCC seen as an oppressor to

a) Gaileo
b) spanish inquistion.
c) indulgences that led M Luther to question RCC re monies as a buy in for entry into heaven.
d). Dumbing down of all women to merely as pawns in their stragetic game. A Misygonic church. Its women who provided sons to priesthood and also departing of their monies as well. This is what i dont get this re woman being walked over with no fight back.

e) RCC was supressing natural language sign language in favour of oral apporach. Its like teaching the blind to see or teaching the deaf to speak which they never get a perfect speech in their lives. Why did they push for Oralism approach?
F) abusing kids as another sign of their dominance and oppression via total control which leds to abuse of total power unchecked. They let it on unchecked re abuses for decades such as Mc Carrick.

4. Seminiaries kicking out the best ones and keeping in the worst ones such as another poster said it succiently “More unholy abusers found suitable by the seminary”.

5. Gay priests are increasing in terms of figures thus leading a double lives.

6. Highest majority of gay priests are inside the vatican approx 70%. Still they preach such anti homophobia sermons or in their words ; disordered species i think.

7. Dumping women who had affairs with priests. I know one deaf priest in UK who was ordained by JPII years ago. He had an affair with a woman who bore his son. Bishop was playing him around and dragging him (re his decison) for so long. He was bitter at the end as he spoke on tv re his bishop. He was a priest in good standing over 25 years. Think he got it over in a long time. He had to deal with his emotions re his bishop and accept his responsbilities. Part of him wanted to stay as a priest but he felt damaged. Does any priest feel like that?

8. A total misygonic church who views women as deeply problematic. An example of this in India where Vatican dismissed a nun cos she reported her being raped to the police by her bishop. Guess what , Vatican believed the bishop but NOT the nuns. That tells you more about Vatican attitude towards women. Marie Collins of Dublin, who resigned cos similar attitudes dsiplayed by the cardinal who blocked her views and requests.

Also story on Drake which illustrated that very point re two meetings then they dont want to know her.

9. No accountability when it comes to abuses.

10. No total oversight when it comes to using other people’s monies such as church collection or peter pence or bishop collections. RCC is a very wealthy organistion but they keep asking for 2 or 3 church collections on Sundays.

11. Dont give wills to RCC re lands or money or house. In case if you do, please ringfence your monies to ensure that your monies goes to the right place without them touching it. If you dont give nor donate which is fine.

12. If any priest comes to you in your home regulary especially when u get very old, be on your guard re wills and ensure someone in family is present there to protect you.

13. Take everything that a bishop says or said as a pinch of salt. Cos they arent honest when it came to the truth such as abuses.

These same woman who spent 2 hours in the garda station this week, updating them on further harrassment by Yvonne drake and whose son won’t be charged in connection with her either. Many people spent time in the garda station this week incl a local business. And now that drake sent that letter around every business and person named has a copy.

That letter was an anonymous letter accusing people of things but providing absolutely no proof. Yvonne was very foolish to distribute it and could bring great trouble on her.

You said pat that names and addresses were attached to the letter but you weren’t going to publish them

I did and I didn’t. I do not publish things without proof or obvious credibility.

Maybe clerical celibacy should be optional? Marriage can be very grounding for many men and brings with it a massive dose of reality. Changing nappies, caring for children, accepting spousal criticism would only make a priest feel normal and no more special than anyone else. The argument of celibacy making time for full attention to others makes less and less sense. Often it just means time for full and undivided attention to one’s own needs.
