IS DERMOT FARRELL JUST MOVING THE CHAIRS ON THE SINKING TITANIC?

We are told that DF has made his clergy changes for this August and has emailed them to the priests.

We are also told he has asked the Vatican for two new auxiliary bishops.

But is this not just moving the chairs on the sinking Titanic?

The numbers attending Mass will not recover for a very long time, if ever.

The financial knock-on effect of this is that Dublin finances will go down and down.

Also, the RCC is in the eyes of so many now a criminal and sexual abuse pariah.

We are living through ANOTHER REFORMATION.

And this reformation is being played out in front of the global media and the global social media.

If a monk fathered a child 400 years ago it would only be a local scandal.

Now if a monk fathers a child it is known about in 5 minutes in places from Alaska to Thailand.

The global media and the global social media is acting like a magifnying glass on the RCC’s scandals – showing them up in all their ugly guises.

For the RCC to recover it would have to change absolutely radically.

And that will not happen because those with power do not want change and will not allow it.

So it will become an increasingly shrinking corporation.

FOR ME

Fortunately for me, I say, I no longer operate under the massive illusion that the RCC has anything remotely to do with either God or Christianity.

I lived with that illusion for perhaps the first 25 years of my life but as soon as I was ordained and began to move in clerical circles, the scales fell from my eyes.

Very soon I met bullying and sadistic clerics. I also met the “weak” ones – the alcoholics, the mentally ill ones, the hopeless ones.

But the sadistic ones opened my eyes. They bullied their curates, the people, church workers etc.

They were total cynics – having no faith or prayer life – but simply enjoying the gravy train.

The resolution for me was not to be part of them – to be independent of them – and to focus on Jesus and not on the Judas types – althought that’s probably unfair to poor Judas.

We dont need the RCC to have our relationship with the Lord.

God is as available to everyone in their homes and bedrooms as he is in a church.

In fact, considering what some priests are doing in the churches and on altars, people are safer at home.

We have allowed the clerics to hijack the sacraments.

Every person can baptise.

It the couple who are the ministers of marriage.

A good act of contrition is as good as, if not better than, chatting to a questionable man in a dark wardrobe.

Like Hans Kung, I believe that any group of Christians sitting in a circle and sincerely breaking bread and wine have the real presence of God and Jesus with them.

That does not mean that I do not treasure and enjoy the more formal Eucharist as we have it.

But it the clerics saying: “You can only have Jesus if you do what I tell you to do” that is crazy.

God is not bound by theology or canon law.

The Spirit blows where it will.

I love the old Jewish saying:

“You think it is a niracle when God does what the priests ask.

I thinks its a greater miracle when the priests do what God asks”.

Over 2000 years we have codified the un-codifiable God.

The future is in allowing the Real God to surprise us, everyday, with his infinite spontaneity.

God does not allow himself to be the prisoner of the priest’s gold tabernacle.

Nor does he want his sons and daughters to be the captives of the New Pharisees – the hierarchy and clergy of the RCC.

I wonder if truths like this ever cross the minds of DF in Dublin and Amy in Armagh?

Every time there’s a comment published at night the holy priests make allegations like that. They have literally no idea of the world of work and must think that nursing, operating, security, warehouses, lorry driving and the emergency services are only staffed in office hours.

GENESIS 18

Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?24What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare [6] the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?25Far be it from you to do such a thing–to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge [7] of all the earth do right?”26The LORD said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”27Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,28what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city because of five people?” “If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”29Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?” He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”30Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?” He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”31Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?” He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”32Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?” He answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.”

The mere fact that what you say about bishop sending out slightly different versions to identify who was leaking them to you, and that that has effectually silenced the clergy, alone indicates that there isn’t one with courage.
If a bishop was respected by his clergy and sent out an early list with a note to say this is provisional so don’t share it yet, they wouldn’t share it.
These pathetic excuses for men have been silenced by this pathetic trick. If any of them had any balls and heard about this they would make an appointment with the bishop and confront him with it. It’s a trick and absolutely will not create any kind of mature open relationship within the diocese.
It puts the lie to those priests who preen themselves on here that their parishes are wonderful supportive communities.
Personally if my bishop did that I would be out of there. they do those things to ensure the clergy are cowed and pliable. And pathetic cowards.
Oh – and to ensure they will be too frightened to blow the whistle on any other shit going on.

11.49: As a counter to your experiences, I’ve encountered many kind and caring priests. I will never forget the kindness of local priests and religious when my father died. They were so kind to my mother and family for a long time afterwards. There are very kind priests but also very unkind priests. I do not share Pat’s assessment of the Church. His flippancy is nasty. We are indeed living in very changing times. It seems to me that Pat continues to blame everyone else for his leaving the Church. He contributed hugely to his exile by his bullying behaviour. Pat does some good undoubtedly but so do many, many clerics. Isn’t it curious that organised religion is in decline, yet alternatives like the Oratory are not attracting congregations!! Nor do we ever get updates about the Oratory. This weekend with 6 masses we will have over 900/1000 in attendance. It has been like this since we reopened in May. We have to close the doors before all masses and sadly not allow in more than 135/140 per mass. Pat, we work with what we’re given. God is with us and while I share your abhorrence of all corruption and abuse, we ensure that we care for the responsibilities we are given and work for the good of others, spiritually and pastorally. There are always opportunities offered by God even in darkness, struggle and challenge.

I would not see caring people called spies.
Thankfully they have many successes from this blog and I suppose the biggest is preventing a teenager seminarian being stalked and further more the Church was able to address his mental health caused by the Stalker.

Fmr. Priest James Carroll: How the Catholic Church Lost Its Soul | Amanpour and Company

The battle to reform the Catholic Church has been plagued by a long-running sexual abuse crisis. Author, historian and journalist James Carroll argues that male dominance is the root cause of the church’s issues. His new memoir, “The Truth at the Heart of the Lie,” links his own crisis of faith as a priest to the history of the church itself. He joins Michel Martin to discuss his call to reform the church and the need to give women a voice within the institution. Ireland, ground zero of abuse, is mentioned at 4:40.

Your pathetic post suffers from a deficiency of reason.
1. Scholars have been debating Jesus’s intentions for decades and centuries and their tentative conclusions are consistengly fact driven and, at the same time, acknowledge the difficulties of reconstructing intentionality of first-century persons.
Your assumption that later developments are questionable brcause they may not have been established in the very brief period of Jesus’ public ministry displays a facile grasp of the organic developmental nature of revelation.
Nothing worthwhile to contribute.

Prove to me that Jesus intended priesthood, because Hebrews makes clear that Jesus’ death and resurrection obviated priesthood, and exposed its utter futility for sin atonement.
Jesus’ death and resurrection meant that their was no necessity for an intermediary between God and humankind, and that such had been pointless anyhow.
When the veil of the Temple was torn in two, either literally or metaphorically, God granted every man, woman, and child direct access to him; no need for a mediating priesthood. This lesson was learned in the very early church, very quickly, because Jesus’ followers would gather in one another’s homes to break bread and drink wine in his memory. NO priests were present, since none were needed.
Sadly for the church, priesthood was reinstitued, in direct denial of Jesus’ redemptive work. The message was now clear: there is no getting to Heaven except through priestly hands.
These priests then steadily raised the barrier Jesus had broken down; they even erected rood screens and altar rails to keep believers from God. And they insisted that believers not touch consecrated hosts with their unanointed hands, and that they absolutely must not drink the precious blood, in blatant disobedience to Jesus’ instruction at the Last Supper.
Prove to me that Jesus intended priesthood, and I’ll apologise to you today, here on this blog.

1. Your glib conclusion that Jesus did or did not intend X or Y is rather amusing, considering that scholars are debating such over long periods of time with evidence-based methods.
2. The Jewish priesthood fell into desuetude with the destruction of the Temple under Titus. It is the Jewish priesthood which Hebrews speaks about.
3. The question isn’t whether Jesus did or did not intend something or other. His public ministry, some scholars argue, was no more than a year. His charism was to begin preaching the Kingdom of God, Paul’s to propagate that preaching over a wide area, and the charism of Timothy, Titus, Sylvanus, etc. to maintain and grow local churches. The question is whether X or Y is in homogenous continuity with Jesus’ initial preaching, which, the rest of the N.T. tells us us, the origin and gradual development of the roles of presbuteros, episkopos, diakonos and hereus unquestionably were.
4. Your oft-repeated meme about the origins of Christian priesthood show no evidence of a progressive understanding of divine revelation but do indicate you have nothing to say and an obligation to say it.

Like

3.47
So your conclusion, that Jesus DID establish a priesthood, can only be just as … well … glib really, since those same scholars are still debating whatever it is you claim they are debating. If I may not draw such a conclusion about priesthood in this circumstance, then nor may you. But you did anyhow. You don’t think ahead, do you?
Unbelievable. You tried holding my feet to the fire here and ended by roasting your own with a self-defeating argument. ‘Amusing’ isn’t the word . ‘Stupid’ is a much better fit.
Yes, Hebrews is speaking of the levitical priesthood; I didn’t deny the fact. However, levitical or otherwise, what is priesthood, ANY priesthood, but an intermediary between a deity, Christian or pagan, and a people.
Hebrews couldn’t be clearer: intermediation between God and humankind is obviated by Jesus’ death and resurrection. Made redundant. Exposed as futile. An absolute waste of time. Hilarious right enough, were it not for the gravest of human consequences priesthood historically and inevitably brought.
What part of my argument really sticks in your craw? Is it the loss of status, privilege, self-exceptionalism, self-deification that the abolition of priesthood would bring for some? Like you? You’re a romanist priest, aren’t you? And as Pat has said in one way or another, in different places, you will not have wrung from your grasping hands the power and preeminence priesthood brings you.
As for your ‘X or Y’ nonsense, the greatest factor in answering the question of priesthood is Jesus’ death and ressurrection itself: salvation, its possibility for everyone, was achieved WITHOUT the assistance of priesthood…unless you consider a positve contribution here the crucial role priesthood played in Jesus’ murder. Therefore its continuation is self-evidently unnecessary, pointless.
You go from bad to downright preposterous in considering priesthood as the homogeneous outworking of roles in the very early church. And worse still, as an expression of divine revelation. Wow! So the meaning of that phase for you, ‘divine revelation’, is simply (and I do mean ‘simply’) ‘if it happened, then God must have wanted it to happen’. I suppose that on this intellectual prepubescent level, we must consider such historical events as the Crusades, the Papal Inquisition, the Protestant Reformation, the sexual-abuse criminality (Wait! That one is ongoing, not historical.) as manifestations of divine revelation because they, er, happened. Keep digging, you complete fool.
Anyone who has seriously studied and understood the nature of those early church roles knows that comparing them not just to priesthood today, but especially to its manifestation and self-glorification since the fourth century is absolutely beyond preposterous.

Most bishops are rearranging the deck chairs on their respective diocesan versions of the Titanic. Amalgamating parishes, closing churches, importing third world clergy, coming up with all sorts of fine sounding plans that simply mean doing more with less, and making some of the right noises about lay involvement but making sure that the levers of power remain in the clerical hand. And then, fewer and fewer people in the pews, a process which started well before the pandemic but which is now being turbo boosted as people don’t return to their past practice. So, it is not a good picture. There are still those who go on about the small and faithful remnant and a purer Church that will emerge at the end of all this, but in reality they are just making the best of a rather rotten hand and being overly optimistic. The ‘remnant crowd’ are usually autistic, challenged people who are mono visioned and don’t have much else in their lives, or the traditionalist orthodox crowd who take refuge in bells, smells, liturgy and Latin Mass in the EF.
It’s heartening to see the Pope reeling the EF crowd in somewhat in the last few days, even from his hospital bed ! I read one report that said that the Pope is very pastoral until he decides not to be, and I think this pre-emptive strike against the EF traditionalists shows how ruthless he can be when he has to be ruthless. I particularly like the bit about any young priest ordained from now on having to get the permission of his bishop if he wants to celebrate the EF, who in turn has to refer the matter to Rome. I doubt if there will be many new permissions given. As a result, those young but old (and invariable rotund) fogey seminarians dotted around our seminaries who like to play at dressing up and living like they are modern day Cardinal Newmans might just concentrate a little more on what they are going to be doing – like running 5 parishes, having to deal with empty pews and rambling deserted buildings, dealing with increasingly complicated lives and issues in a nuanced, subtle and imaginative way rather than just applying moralistic and judgemental chapter and verse, and so and so on as the challenges fall upon them. I doubt if many of them are being decently prepared for that. Instead, they are being trained in a clerical culture that instills a sense of superiority, exceptionalism, and unaccountability. They are in for a shock, I fear…..

Dear 9:47, I gather from your comment that you are a priest? If so, your new ‘prospectus’ rings very hollow indeed based on the caustic, trenchant labels you have applied to your and other parishioners around the country.
I glean from your comment that you probably can’t stomach those simple faithful who take their faith seriously; who maybe pray the Rosary, love God’s laws and commandments and frequent the sacraments frequently.
These “autistic”, “monovisioned” and “challenged” souls recognise their need for God and sanctifying grace. They are also the only ones keeping money in your bank account and food on your table. Now they mightn’t have your “nuanced” and “imaginative” approach to pastoral theology; but they haven’t received your training and don’t have your provided time or resources for such.
Let’s be thankful for those souls still clinging onto their faith instead of trying to empty the pews further by cutting broadsides, just because they don’t match up to your expectations, Fr. Anon.

LOL Rorate Coeli blog describes the pope as ‘anti-Christical’ for his decision on the use of the old mass. How is it possible to be Catholic and see the pope like that?
Pat it’s just possible these people hate Frank more than they do you!

That ‘particular group’ itself incites, and against itself, every dark emotion you can imagine, including hatred. It needs help here from no one, priest.

It is the Catholic-, God-hating pseudo priests, many of whom comment here, along with their amoral abusive confrères who are the origin of incitement of hatred towards the Priesthood. They have turned the Church into a laughing stock and have deprived Her of moral credibility and evangelistic potency. They refuse to open their minds to the Truth and do their best to refuse that same Truth to others.
Thanks be to God for the real priests who love the Faith and do their best to battle on despite the perfidious wolves within their own ranks.

I have never seen any hatred here. I have seen a frank criticism and Catholics calling that hate.
For example if I say that the UN decided the treatment of children by the church amounted to torture and that US states have considered using RICO laws to deal with the church, these are statements of fact. Not hatred.
If I then say that I can’t understand how any good and moral person would associate with that church, that is also not hate. But at that point you all start screaming that it’s hatred, demanding we look at other churches and wanting to know where the social workers were.
You can’t really expect to belong to a body which has had those things happen and expect unconditional praise.

Like

2:55 Despite saying Pat incites hatred towards priests, I wonder why you and anyone who makes that false claim which you know he doesn’t accept, keeps coming back here to read this supposed hate.
Can you explain your motivation please, because I don’t understand why you would.

Like

They keep coming back because they are afraid they will be exposed next. Their tactics are to troll, distract, deflect, moan, whinge, emotionally/psychologically manipulate , etc.
I know honest hard working priests who aren’t bothered by this blog because their consciences are clear.

3.00: That a selective interpretation. Very frequently you present twisted, cynical and sinister narratives. Very often you allow, facilitate and encourage pornographic content: Yes you encourage exposure of abuse and wrongdoing but more frequently you support and allow the most offensive, hurtful and defamatory innuendo on your blog. You print the finest comments about clergy. You rarely, if ever, have a good word to say about any priest. Pat, stop digging a hole….for once accept criticism and truth.

Fair enough, it’s selective censorship all right.
On a different note frankie the gaslighter doesn’t do rcc any favours re change in Latin Mass. I would guess that there will be a lot of seminarians leaving rcc in coming months. BOOM.

Like

Although as a Latin teacher I greatly benefited from Benedict’s SP in that I no longer had to endure complaints from my Vat II Cult students about their institution’s disdain for Latin, I always thought it was a matter of, as it were, hocus pocus. Francis is simply being logical and is emphasizing the discontinuity from Trentish tradition.

Of course, IMHO, the only recourse for dissenters is a discerning return to Holy Orthodoxy, but that would take a lot of adjusting.

Seraphim, I’m now looking to embrace Orthodoxy and leave the Pachamama worhipping, abuse ridden RCC to wither on the vine. Once the old ladies who comprise its membership die it’s game over. The only growth was in the TLM communities and Papa Abuse Enabler wants to kill that. No pastoral accompaniment for them

Orthodoxy’s gain will be our loss. Best of luck. If you are a male and want to be a priest you’ll be able to marry. 😀

Bishop Pat, have you followed the story of Church Militant last month, campaigning against Elsie’s appointment of Fr Philip Dyer-Perry as Pastoral Director of Alice Hall? They claimed he is pro-abortion, pro-LGBTQ and a BLM supporter. Church Militant forum posters claimed that the priest looked effeminate, called God she, was a closet gay and liked beer. After prayerful discernment, he asked Elsie to withdraw the job offer and he remains PP in Staines. Apologies if you have covered this story, it has just been brought to my attention.

Of course, Archbishop (soon to be Cardinal) Arthur Roche has been working for many months on the Pope’s document about the Latin Mass. We therefore have much to thank him for, much for the Church in England and Wales to be proud of. All Hail Ye.

If only Bergoglio directed a tenth of his hatred of the TLM to rooting out abuse, rather than enabling and ignoring it.
Also, it looks like his hyperclericalist interdict is receiving the same obedience as Humanae Vitae did from CINOs. The Mass of Ages continues, as before, at the Oxford Oratory.

I’m a 25 year old RC Priest from England. I’ve been in my Parish for 9 months. I am so lonely. It’s awful. My PP is an alcoholic and nearly every day he tries to kiss me. I’m have to lock my bedroom door to stop him coming in. I’ve become addicted to
porn and masturbation that I practice at least 3 times a day, sometimes 4 or 5. On top of that I’ve stated drinking. I’m trapped. I think it is best that I leave. I need advice but nobody will listen.

I’m 77, and ‘got out’ at 24, before ordination. Was mixed up, worried etc for over a year before leaving, with only certainty, that clerical life was not for me.
Absolutely no regrets. Just great relief that I took the plunge to leave, especially knowing what I now know about the authenticity of religion in general, and the nature of the RCC in particular.
You’re still young enough to make a life for yourself, so do it now before it’s too late, otherwise when sucked into emasculated dependency, you’ll end up as just another crabbid oul selfish PP.

8.57: Pat, why are you allowing the continuing effeminising of bishops and archbishops? It’s very wrong, insulting, unnecessary and an abuse. It makes a mockery of your claim to be a just and fair and normal person. It would enhance your integrity if you stopped this abuse. Think about it. It’s a simple, respectful request. Attributing female names to men is very immature and degrading.

It was a lovely Sunday morning for a pilgrimage walk. 🌄
On the topic of yesterday, the numbers attending mass was exceptionally high for years. God is not bound by theology or canon law. I would advise people as always to use the Bible and the 10 Commandments as their compass.
The Kingdom county have been asked to pray for more vocations. The bishops could try and ensure that Ireland’s only seminary is fit for purpose first before anyone is sent there.
There are many great priests in parishes all around the country. Their compassion and dedication needs to be acknowledged too.
Fair comment at 11:04, it is hypocritical for someone to speak of irrelevance and to be reading/commenting at the same time!!
Anon 12:38 wrote very well. Fair play!
Jesus certainly did not intend clericalism. Jesus did not come to abolish the priesthood either. He told the leper to present himself to the high priest. Jesus preached in the temple. Many encounters in the NT happened on the Sabbath.
I’m sorry to hear about the priest who has been removed from all diocesan communications. That’s disgraceful.
The Pope had a good week. Argentina won the Copa America! 🇦🇷 Italy won Euro 2020! 🇮🇹 The Pope came home from hospital! 🇻🇦
