CARDINAL O’BRIEN – EXPOSED.

FROM AMAZON:

Description

Product Description

As the papal conclave that was to choose Pope Francis was being called, a cardinal of the Catholic Church was exposed and took a monumental fall from grace. Since then, many more high\-profile Catholic clerics have been confronted. One of four whistle blowers, former priest Brian Devlin relates what it took to uncover the sexual hypocrisy of Cardinal Keith O’Brien in this previously untold inside story. Making the effort to write not from a place of anger and hurt, he presents Cardinal Sin as an opportunity for the global Church to learn and change.

With far reaching insights, the book offers genuine lessons to help avoid future horror stories involving Catholic leaders.

The author asks the hard questions, analyses the harsh responses of the Catholic hierarchy and provides ways the Church can heal and regain the trust of its faithful.

Cardinal Sin: Challenging power abuse in the Catholic Church is a critical work for understanding how the Catholic Church does and should react when its senior figures are challenged.

Review

“A searching but compassionate account of one of the greatest sex scandals in the Catholic Church in recent history” –Richard Holloway

“Without courageous whistleblowers like Brian Devlin, we would never know the extent of the corruption that facilitated O’Brien and others like him.” –Mary McAleese

About the Author

Brian Devlin is a former Catholic priest. Being profoundly deaf he uses his social media presence to raise awareness of issues around deafness. He was Director in charge of Public Relations and Patient Participation for an NHS Board. Prior to all of this, he was a Catholic Priest in Edinburgh. He left the priesthood – however his interest in medical and healthcare ethics, which he learned in his training, remains.

PAT SAYS

KEITH O’BRIEN was an out and out hypocrite – living a gay sexually active life, seducing seminarians and priests – and publically opposing open and honest gay men and women who wanted to seal their love with a civil partnership or marriage.

Interestingly, he was also a big mate of Jimmy Saville! What was that all about?

He was the Scottish version of Uncle Ted McCarrick – who hopefully we will soon see jailed.

Brian Devlin

BRIAN DEVLIN has the perfect right to oublish this book – to tell what O’Brien did to him and others.

Devlin is also doing us all a favour by lifting up another Catholic clerical rock and allowing us to see the creepy crawlies that will come crawling out.

With the recent story of all those in the Vatican using Grindr – it seems that a lot more of them are “at it”.

I thought that KOB only window-shopped, ie that he didn’t act out his orientation. Or have I got that wrong.

I wouldn’t have it in the house. Total boresville. If it was any good a big publishing house would have done it, not a Mickey Mouse outfit such as the Columba Press. It probably has a print run of 500 copies, max.

I think KOB’s sexual misdemeanours will seem trivial in what the Pillar is likely to reveal with its own going data revelations. Tom Farmer and the Late Arnold Clark are very good to the Catholic Church in Scotland and everyone know KOB was set up over a Mitre and because that and moves to plush parishes they brought him down.
They all loved the parties even in their PJ’s while the food and drink flowed.
I wonder if Brian is going to mention the fantastic sum he received from the Archdioceses alongside his “friends” yes Friends of Kitty’s as well.
Matty is still going strong doing supply work in Galloway and loving all the fuss over her but see forgets the parties and his activity in his parish and at Blair, Matty should just go and retire and stop sully work now as his “Friends” are not happy.

I agree about Tom Farmer. Arnold Clark was an elder of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. Don’t see how he was good to the RC church in Scotland.

No one is interested in her matriarchical way of hectoring and lecturing everyone. She has lost political credibility too. At least Mary Robinson went on to a world stage to influence the movers and thinkers of the world. McAleese is caged in her baggage of ire, nastiness and contradictions.

MMM @ 11.33 As you well know that’s not what happened. She was a happy little ring kisser until her son came out as gay. She then hacked her hair short and went to Rome to qualify as a canon lawyer to plead his case with the church. She was unsuccessful and is an embittered old woman.

@7:25: Might some element of the criticism of Mrs McA arise from defenders of the RCC unable or unwilling to acknowledge its wrongs, both in actions and theology?
Could one reasonably argue that they criticise Mrs McA because she, in her life journey from a traditional catholic upbringing and consequent deference to the RCC, eventually came to a realisation of its manifest and multitude deficiencies, and now speaks out concerning these?
Many of her critics could be said to remain wedded to their traditional beliefs and unable/unwilling to countenance anything which challenges their entrenched position. So could one argue that resentment of her and criticism of her apparent change of public comment fails to recognise that when President she had a responsibility to avoid controversy, especially in the former clerically dominated ROI? Now, as a private individual she is free to voice opinions formed from personal experiences and study, so long as she maintains the diplomatic proprieties of her former position as president.
With the ‘scales having fallen ‘ from her eyes, and particularly in view of the many abuse revelations since her presidency, maybe she rightly feels a responsibility to speak out.
Those ‘scales’ have also fallen from many eyes. Indeed the bible has lots to say about having eyes to see and ears to hear, ……and mouths to speak too!

The first of the Tablet letters is from the parish priest of St Mary’s, Inverness. In June 2016 I attended the main Sunday mass in that church. The congregation was large, ethnically diverse, and totally engaged with the liturgy. The homily was so good that, five years later, I still remember much of it. There were three priests on the staff (Scots, Polish Syrian) and two young men from the parish at seminaries. A more impressive community I cannot imagine. At least in the Highlands, the church is flourishing.

You stoop low in your effort to debate. On the one hand you refer to men by female nomenclature in a poor attempt to disparage; secondly, you add an ageist epithet, in another try at denigration; and, thirdly, you employ a symbol, the cross of Christ to insult. An altogether pathetic effort at civilised debate.

Like

Interesting how the devout ‘Catholics’ are criticising Dr McAleese, using language that they are critical of in others. Like all good Catholics hypocrisy is never too far away. The discourse Mary McAleese engages in is based on Canon Law, she has very impressive academic qualifications in this regard. I suspect the critics lack such expertise and understanding. Much critique is anonymous as very few are able to debate the points. First response is to go on the offensive and to play the person and not the ball.

The comments so far today confirm my instinct that the RC church is a cult. Usually this is visible in the oaths of obedience to the cult, but here they are uniting to flay someone not involved in the publication. And avoiding the publication into the bargain.
This is the classic cult avoidance of anything which questions the cult’s line and questioning the motives of anyone revealing the truth about the cult. In fact I think it’s the clearest example I have seen for years.
A Christian response to this book would be to make a point of getting to know its contents and dealing with the contents in the light of love.
But we’re not dealing with men of God when it comes to the RC church.

Yes, the RCC is a cult. It demands unquestioning obedience to the ”Sacred Magisterium ”. To the bishops.

Let us be quite clear. By all accounts Jimmy Saville was a jeckyll and Hyde.
He was highly respected across society. He was the biggest crawler ever created. The Prince of Wales used to travel from Balmoral during the summer holidays to Saville’s cottage in Glencoe for afternoon tea. Saville was made a knight by the British crown on the advice of the Conservative government. He licked all round politicians of all parties (particularly Thatcher) and clerics of all denominations.
As one of his close relatives said “it is hard to understand that someone who raised millions for charity spent time volunteering could do such things”.
I did see him in Glasgow some years ago surrounded by the Royal Marines. He was dressed in Celtic and Rangers colours. Hundreds of people were associated with him. He was very clever.

10.09: You are right Pat. The church has only itself to blame for much criticism it receives. Sadly, the criminal behaviour and corruption revealed in many ways have destroyed the Church’s moral credibility. By extension, its spiritual integrity is damaged. While many in the church worldwide, both clerical and non clerical are wonderful Christ like people and carry out great works of mercy, charity and compassion, we are, as an institution in need of great repair. Slowly the edifices of abuse, greed and corruption are crumbling. I celebrated two masses this morning with the maximum number allowed, 150, at each mass. They are salt of the earth and all I can do is offer them some kind of faithful ministry, be with them and care for them when and where absolutely necessary. The immense goodness of parishioners and of good priests keeps me afloat and of course – trust in God, prayer and the Eucharist.

Perhaps if you studied religion and history, read a little beyond this blog, followed international religious events and weren’t so biased or misinformed, you might see more cleraly and truthfully. Study after study, providing clinical data, has evidenced the reality that people of a Christian belief are more inspired to be involved in charitable and compassionate works. It seems to come from the ARC subset (anti-roman-catholic) Its a trait of the more dysfunctional gays. who have a pathological dislike of women and seem to think that referring to a man as a woman is an insult, such as 7:06, 6:15, 1:28, 11:41, 12:12, 10:41, 1:14. Would the gays who do this like to enlighten normal people about their need to do this.. It would make for an interesting PhD study.
