BEATEN FOR BEING LEFT HANDED.

Hi Pat, I was born in the sixties, I am left handed and was forced to write right handed in a catholic run school in the republic of Ireland.

Could I ask for your views and insights into this practice, was it a church policy, state policy or were both church and state complicit.

I reached an agreement with the religious order concerned through mediation and that is fine.

However I have written several times to church and state asking for acknowledgement and apology for failing in their duty of care to protect me from such abuse,

I am not seeking compensation from either. I have received unsatisfactory replies from the state, I believe Archbishop Eamon Martin has not been at all helpful or indeed very truthful, and Bishop Brendan Kelly hasn’t had the courtesy to even acknowledge my existence.

To be very honest with you, I am writing to you in the hope that you may have knowledge of this practice which could potentially shame both church and at the time, the Fianna Fail governed state into apologising to me and I believe thousands like me for the past failings of their predecessors.

THE. BIBLE AND LEFT HANDEDNESS

“Jesus sits at God’s right side. God’s left hand, however, is the hand of judgement. The Archangel Gabriel is sometimes called “God’s left hand”, sits at God’s left side, and is one of six angels of death. Those who fall from favor with God are sent to left, as described in Matthew 25: 32–33, in which sheep represent the righteous and goats represent the fallen: “And he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats. And he shall set the sheep on his right, but the goats on his left.” In 19th-century Europe, homosexuals were referred to as “left-handed”. In Protestant-majority parts of the United Kingdom, Catholics were called “left-footers”, and vice versa in Catholic-majority parts of Ireland and Irish America. Black magic is sometimes referred to as the “left-hand path”, which is strongly associated with Satanism.”

THE GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER

Being a leftie has a genetic component, is linked to better verbal skills and is associated with a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease, according to a new study published in the journal Brain.

STUDY REFERRED TO

Ninety per cent of the human population has been right-handed since the Paleolithic, yet the brain signature and genetic basis of handedness remain poorly characterized.

Here, we correlated brain imaging phenotypes from ∼9000 UK Biobank participants with handedness, and with loci found significantly associated with handedness after we performed genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in ∼400 000 of these participants.

Our imaging–handedness analysis revealed an increase in functional connectivity between left and right language networks in left-handers. GWAS of handedness uncovered four significant loci (rs199512, rs45608532, rs13017199, and rs3094128), three of which are in—or expression quantitative trait loci of—genes encoding proteins involved in brain development and patterning. These included microtubule-related MAP2 and MAPT, as well as WNT3 and MICB, all implicated in the pathogenesis of diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia. In particular, with rs199512, we identified a common genetic influence on handedness, psychiatric phenotypes, Parkinson’s disease, and the integrity of white matter tracts connecting the same language-related regions identified in the handedness–imaging analysis. This study has identified in the general population genome-wide significant loci for human handedness in, and expression quantitative trait loci of, genes associated with brain development, microtubules and patterning. We suggest that these genetic variants contribute to neurodevelopmental lateralization of brain organization, which in turn influences both the handedness phenotype and the predisposition to develop certain neurological and psychiatric diseases.

My sister was beaten by the Holy Faith nuns in Glasnevin for being left-handed.

It marked her life forever.

Why is it that religion and Roman Catholicism are anti every progressive thing?

Do they want to keep in alavery to them?

I think so.

FOR THOSE WHO SPOTTED ME IN DUBLIN LAST NIGHT 😉

The wonderful Holy Faith Sisters are now getting beaten by you, Buckley. Disgusting. Lay teachers in my primary school and vocational school used much corporal punishment which was tolerated by the Department of Education. A horrendous regime existed in schools. But in your eyes, the religious are the chief culprits.

Like

@ 9:35 Fact : the majority of schools in the country always had a majority of lay teachers. Thats a fact, but of course in your Trumpian reality you don’t believe that. You blame everything on the priests and nuns, have you heard that the priests and nuns built the iceberg that sank the Titanic, and they created the Coronavirus- Covid Virus. they are also involved in starting wildfires in Turkey and in the West Coast USA. Ive no proof at all but I’m telling you it is the truth. I read it on the internet or heard it when I had a few vodkas. They also are responsible for the death of Princess Diana.

It was common practice in ALL schools to get children to use their right hand instead of their left. It was not limited to Catholic schools. I attended State-run schools in England and saw children ridiculed and sometimes given the strap if they could not write with their right hand.

I believe it’s a counter-intuitive view in that ostensibly religious of every and any description, attracted and attracts, an inordinate number of sadists – that is they derive sexual pleasure in inflicting pain – be that physical (beatings) or mental (humiliation).
I believe the sexually repressed and homosexual culture engendered in seminary, convent and presbytery is a breeding ground for sexual sadists and the clerical life attracts sadists like bees to honey.
Nuns can be especially cruel and mean and clearly get off on this – convents are full of them – you can spot them a mike off.
Clergy are notoriously cruel and mean and get their rocks off through high control and domineering behaviour.

My aunt was a Mercy Sister and taught for many years at Our Lady of Mercy Convent School, Blackrock, Dublin. I won’t say her name as she became somewhat famous there for the cruel punishment she handed out. In her later years she said the superior banned her from hitting the kids because it got so bad. I dated a woman who was taught by her who said that she put her off religion for life. Apparently my aunt had an ability to make the strap break skin. She was very accurate in also inflicting multiple blows to the same spot.
For me though she was my kind and dotting aunt who was the nun. Maybe it was just that suppressed sexual desires and energy that led her to beat the children. I blame the church for her being the way she was. My mother always thought that she was a suppressed lesbian.

That year I got the strap so often that I used to wet myself before school every morning. This only angered my father who would then give me another beating. This went on for almost a whole year. I’ve always had a fear of nuns since.
My brother was taught by the Christian Brothers and he had far worse than me. At least the nuns only hit us. The brothers did far worse. My brother still has nightmares. Pat do you think you could help him? He’s lost his faith entirely and he struggles with mental health now. Also the drugs and alcohol have got out of control. Any suggestions to help him?

About time you had a good go at the nuns for once Pat. This blog, or better said you Pat are obsessed with attacking the clergy. It was the nuns and brothers who did the real damage. I was taught by Jesuit priests for my college years and only have good things to say about them. However, my early years were with the Holy Faith sisters. One sister used to take half of my lunch from me as she thought I’d look much better if I lost a few pounds. Years later I saw her at a function in my childhood parish and she hadn’t changed at all. She said it looks like you still have an issue with putting too much in your mouth. The old bitch was cruel to the end. One of my classmates urinated on her grave which brought a wee bit of comfort to us all. In fact it’s become a bit of a ritual we all do when we go home to visit her grave after dark and relieve ourselves over it

Bishop Pat, I was at a Carmelite boarding school in the late 70s-early 80s and I clearly remember seeing a grown man’s genitals for the first time. They belonged to a priest we nicknamed ‘Tommy Rocks’. He made several boys perform fellatio on him. None of them knew about the others until years later. I can’t tell that to my wife. I don’t want my kids of colleagues to know. In any case, what if he were to call me a liar and say that I was just looking for compensation? I don’t want to be in the newspapers. As a grown man with a family, what I think of him now compared to then, is very different. I’m afraid of re-living the whole experience if I were to complain and of being disbelieved. Better, perhaps, just to leave it in the past. Thanks.

I understand you. I had a similar experience in a Cistercian boarding school in the early 90s. I keep trying to ignore and pretend it didn’t happen. I am not sure how healthy it is to bottle up. I agree with you.

Urinating in this way is only a phyrric victory, and conscience will eventually reveal it as a deeply ungracious and ungratifying moral defeat. Paradoxically, it debases the living, not the dead. Anger and hurt delay this realisation, but only for a time.

The best ‘revenge’ is the triumph of love and mercy over cruelty. It may be counter-cultural, but it is true, all the same.

PRAY for your tormentors, because those who managed to repent are at your mercy, quite literally. And in gratitude, they will pray for you, to undo the terrible harm they so cruelly did you.

Remember those who repented are now seeing their behaviour, their sadism, in a very different and truthful light; could they return to life, they would crave your forgiveness.

My late grandmother was born and raised in Italy. Her mother died when she was five and so was sent to the orphanage ran by Dominican sisters. She despised nuns because of her experience there. Once she was unwell and refused to drink her hot milk in the morning and so it was left out at every meal for the next two days. It turned sour and she was unable to drink it. In the end one of the nuns pinched her nose held her head back and poured the sour milk down her throat. She said the nuns would have favorites and would reward those girls who expressed a desire to enter religious life with the best shoes and clothes. My grandmother was a woman of great integrity and I had no reason to disbelieve her experience of the sadistic Dominican nuns. If there is a God I do hope those sisters are met with the same tenderness and mercy which they displayed towards vulnerable orphans.

Very rarely did any cbs asked to be buried in their home county-family burial grounds. I knew one who was a well known bully and thumper of deaf boys who asked to buried in West of Ireland few years ago. I could think of one reason was that he may have heard re peeing on graves etc.
Sad part was when ex school mate told me very recently that 2 ex dorm mates of mine whose beds – 3 to 5 beds away from mine ended up in nursing home and also a mental health unit in some hse facility plus one who committed suicide.
That’s the price of ingrained abuses for a long period of time which any abused could break down. That’s the price of what they as rcc (cbs and the nuns) did to ourselves without any accountability nor any oversight nor any checks and balances.

I completely understand the impulse of revenge involved in urinating on the grave of a dead cleric or nun who was a complete and utter shit – although I’m sure a psycho-sexual psychologists would have a field day, let alone the local constabulary – it must surely be illegal or skirting around it, the secret I guess is not getting caught.
I understand it because clerical abuse, of any kind, priest or nun, sexual or other, is so odious and damaging, leaving an imprint which undermines faith in God and any shred of confidence in institutional religion.
Revenge is human and understandable and a dish best served cold and what could be colder than a corpse six feet under and what could be more liberating than raining down warm piss on their grave, a gesture of contempt yes, but better than that, of utter and complete victory for they are dead and gone but you are alive – warm piss transformed into an elixir of triumph and celebration.
I can think of several total bastard clerics whose graves I will not only dance over when the time comes but piss over too.

I went to Renmore School in Galway in the 1970s, and there was a nun there who was the spawn of Satan, Sr Michael Farrell. I can still see her pulling children around by the hair of their heads. She used to pretend she was going to have a party, and then make an excuse to cancel it because a child laughed or talked out of turn. She would line up all the lovely treats and keep the kids in for an hour after school where they had to sit still staring at the lovely things they weren’t allowed to have. The first child that moved got beaten. She also broke a child’s finger when I was there. I can still hear the screams over forty years later. Her catchphrase was, ‘I’ll knock a light out of you.’ Ironically enough, one of the hymns she used to teach went something like, ‘love is his way, love is his word.’ Evil, evil woman. She and other psychotic nuns and priests are the reason I won’t darken the door of a church. They destroyed any faith I had.

It doesn’t mean he’s an alcoholic, just his proclivity for drink to forget or erase his inner demons.
Im not sure if he had gooten it over or not. He appeared on CNN or NBC TV re abuse as snap spokesperson. One thing he had said was that his parents believed the priest rather than a 9 years old boy at that time. That was when priests at that time held so much power in their hands and their words were sacrosanct and believed etc. That’s 70s.

One kid’s father burst into the class one day, and said to her, ‘you touch my young lad again, and I’ll rip your veil off your head and shove it down your f—ing throat’. We were all secretly applauding!! Another memory, Eamon Dermody was a priest in Renmore, and he used to stop the Mass to bollock the servers and other people. I don’t think pissing on someone’s grave means you haven’t forgiven them or that your enthralled to demons etc.
I think it could simply be a private gesture of relief that they are no longer able to torment – indeed they may well be the one being tormented.
I’d do it after drinking several pints and hold it in sure of the relief of release.
It also runs a counter narrative, ‘I wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire’ (clearly I would) and ‘Pissing on you from a great height).
As I say revenge a dish best served cold and better to bury your enemies than expend too much energy hating them – hey at the end of the day if you outlive them you even get a chance to, not so much, take the piss but take a piss. A win win to be sure.
