MY RECENT TRIP TO DUBLIN – A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE.

I spent Monday and Tuesday in Dublin and it was a trip down memory lane.

Dublin makes me sad now because when I moved there in 1960 – 61 years ago at the age of 8, it was a big friendly town. Now its a big, concrete, unfriendly city 😪

Its summed up in this song:

The housing area we lived in was honoured by having its streets called after JONATHAN SWIFT and his works. He wrote the “Drapier Letters”.

St Canice’s Christian Brothers PS.

After a very brief spell in a tiny local primary school locally I was sent to St. Canice’s run by the UNCHRISTIAN BROTHERS.

The brothers and teachers were fully signed up members of the National Union of Sadists.

I particularly remember Brother Coffey and the headmaster Brother Ahern for their sarcasm and beatings.

There was a Brother Jennings who was nice and kind.

SECONDARY EDUCATION

After an aborted attempt at RC secondary education, I ended up in the state run College of Commerce of Rathmined whete I did my Leaving Certificate.

I loved this school. No priests, brothers or nuns and, enlightened for the time, no corporal punishment.

If you worked they supported you.

If you didn’t they let you be.

I found the freedom and lack of fear very conducive to work. I did well there. It was also mixed religion, which was great.

My local parish was Mother of Divine Grace, Ballygal.

I was very impressed with our priests at the yime, Fr John Pierce PP and curates Fr Joe Collins and Fr Michael Lambe.

The tin church was important for me. Went to Mass there. Had my first Mass there. Had my Dad’s funeral there.

I spotted two gay priest couples in Dublin – one couple in the restaurant we ate at and one at breakfast in Wynn’s Hotel.

Couples very interested in my presence.

I am told the Wynn’s couple were on Grindr half the night looking for a third man.

It seems that Ireland’s gay priest couples are, unashamedly out and about.

I was amused that you stayed in Wynn’s Hotel. Why do priests and nuns love it so much? Even as a seminarian my best friend and I often took the 66 bus to Dublin on Sunday and sometimes had lunch in Wynn’s, where we’d try to guess which diners were priests or nuns in mufti.

Statistics tell us that a majority of abusers are known to their victims – so: fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers and cousins (and neighbours).

The very sad thing is that sexual abuse of children and vulnerable adults is not only a thing of the past but is happening here now.

As long as the skewed view of focussing on the 5% while ignoring the 95% continues, children and vulnerable adults will continue to be abused because the majority of perpetrators are out of the spotlight.

You wouldn’t find many clerk in gay bars these days as most prefer Grindr. Used to see loads of Salford and Liverpool clergy down Canal Street in Manchester in the 1990s. For years the C and S had been painted over giving a good idea of what the street was notorious. Now those clerics are well past it, fat, and rural deans and canons. How they must look back on what could’ve been.

If loved-up priestly couples want to avoid the risk of running into Pat they can stay in the double bedrooms of Maynooth, which are let out, no questions asked, to same sex and unmarried couples, even though the terms and conditions refer to them being in the heart of the seminary.

If you stay in the Dublin suite you can say you slept in the archbishop’s bed. It’s where Dermo was put up when he stayed in the college, with a similar set up for the other archbishops.
Unfortunately the superby appointed Armagh suite is never let out to paying guests. It’s next door to Fanny’s huge apartment and used to be Fr Peter Connolly’s old rooms.

You can still get high tea at the Marine Court hotel in Bangor, Co. Down, which must must be one of the last places still serving it.

In the 80s, Wynn’s had a “meals of the world” menu, where they served what they considered to be a representative example of the cuisine of different nations. England was represented by roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. Out of all the menu, I ordered that because, at the age of 21, I’d never tasted Yorkshire pudding.

Working in England, I’m always amazed at how well-paid Irish priests are in comparison. I couldn’t afford to wine and dine in the way they do. Anyway, it’s nicer to have friends over to your house to eat. I was thinking too about the priest and his partner. It must definitely be a case of hiding in plain sight. My late wife and I were always amazed at the wining and dining of priests in eating houses. We didn’t like It. It became obvious to us in many places, particularly in Tyrone and the Armagh area. My wife would write down what they ate and more importantly what they drank. She wrote down car registrations after they had many drinks but still drove after. I still have that book.

As far back as Down’s early ’60’s All Ireland victories my best schoolfriend’s wealthy Dad used treat us to a meal at the Clarence after a match. Even then, as a teenager, I couldn’t help but notice the clergy pushing their way up the queue to fill their fat faces with mixed grills and drink.And they expected preferential treatment as of right. It still rankles.

Priests and fine dining have always been linked. Being gay is what it is. I wonder if any element of clerical gayness is a social statement. Where does all of this leave frustrated parishioners who require clarity on what Christianity really is.

On the topic of yesterday, there seemed to be forgiveness and understanding for the priest in a relationship with a medic. I have sympathy for the LGBT community in committed relationships who are excluded by the Church.
The school run by the Christian Brothers was unChristian. The College of Commerce can possibly be described as Christian!
There is a recurring theme of vocational hypocrisy and lay attentiveness to the guidance of love.
Like any of the Birmingham Six, I am an innocent man who has been wronged.
