LANCASTER AND FATHER DANIEL ETIENNE.

Daniel Etienne

Dear Bishop Buckley,

On behalf of the Catholics of South Blackpool, I want to thank you for your help for supporting us to convince our Bishop Paul Swarbrick to remove Father Daniel from the Office of Parochial Administrator of our Parishes of St John Vianney’s, St Monica’s and St Cuthbert’s.

Swarbrick
Campbell left

We approached you with a heavy heart, mindful of the shortage of Priests and grateful that we actually had one assigned here in the first place.

We needed to take action and with your help he has eventually listened.

Rev Daniel has been transferred to be an Assistant Priest 100 miles away in Carlisle under the watchful eye and guidance of a highly experienced Pastor. He leaves us for good in the coming weeks.

The other news is that his partner in crime Rev Billing (aka Parish dodger), who has quietly lived with Rev Daniel for the last 2 years without saying any public Masses and whose upkeep been paid for by the Parishioners, is also moving to Carlisle to live with Dan the man, where he continues an extended sabbatical to study Canon law and to stay out the way of all the clergy and lay faithful he pissed off whilst he was the previous Bishop’s secretary.

All this means that we can hopefully start to rebuild our Parish again and that Rev Daniel can start afresh.

I know that the two of them like to read your blog , so I thought it would be useful if I reached out to Rev Daniel through this medium
with some constructive feedback.

1. Change your attitude.

When Parishioners bid you good morning or good evening, it is human decency to answer back and not ignore them.

2. Accept that females have a role in the Church

Stop making it known that you believe their only place in the Church is to clean.

3. Think about your approach

Particularly to children and to their teachers. Our children are the future of the Church, so refusing sacraments to them because their parents don’t take them to Mass is not the answer. Our school is next door to Church and it has been sad to see them been bussed to other Churches where the clergy are more approachable and understanding. Try not to get banned from the schools in your new Parish as you did ours!

4.Cut back on the dressing up.

It is one thing wanting to wear old fashioned and traditional cassocks and vestments, that is your choice, but it is quite another to use Parish funds for vestments and other outfits with lots of lace, frills and pom poms that are more suited to a Kylie Minogue or Steps concert. Lay people think it is all a bit odd.

5. Accept the Holy Father’s instruction.

The Latin Mass has gone. You need to move on, or think about joining one of the orders such as Christ the King Sovereign Priest like your friend Fr Millar has done.

6. Think before making too many changes at once.

Getting rid of our popular folk group and their guitars that had been going for over 20 years because you only believe in organ music in Church hurt a lot of people and the way that you did it was not very reverend-like. It was your decision, but just think about handling these situations and about being more “pink and fluffy”.

7. Be more approachable

You have been called to serve the people of God. Not to turn against them or turn them against the Church. Don’t look down your nose at them, or treat them as if they are totally stupid. If you didn’t mean to do this, this is how it feels. Most of us are okay you know!

8. Don’t be so pious

For example, avoid announcing during funerals that lay faithful who have missed Sunday Mass should not present themselves for Holy Communion. That surely is a decision between the individual and almighty God.

9. Your ego

Accept that a Parish is bigger than and is not all about the Priest. I admit that you are a handsome devil, but plastering your photos all over the Parish website was quite unnecessary (rumour is that Fr Billing uploaded all of them!) Thanks for removing them all over the last few weeks.

10. Rev Billing

I know that you and Rev Robert are very close,  but don’t let him influence  you as much. If feels that he is loading the gun and you are firing it for him. You are your own man, you are clever and you don’t need to do what he says or look to please him. He has his own issues to deal with.

11. In a nice way

Get a life

You would perhaps benefit from spending time with people your own age who aren’t necessarily connected to Church. Learn about modern day life and how the world has changed and how we must all adapt and diversify.

I only provide these points as advice to try to help you.  Not to cause trouble or to hurt you. I don’t think the Diocese or those responsible for your seminary formation have been much help or support to you, so your new Parish is a fresh start and I know that the new PP is a wise and holy man.

I really believe that you are a good person at heart and you will make a great Priest.

The diy work you have done around the Parishes has been fantastic and you saved us a lot of money. You are very talented.

I will make myself known to you privately at the Parish BBQ and will ask for your blessing.

Thanks for your service and efforts. I will pray for you as I hope you will me.

PAT SAYS:

I think Joseph in giving Daniel good advice.

Priests of my generation felt called to address our people’s spiritual AND practical needs side by side.

The young priests coming out these days seem to be totally preoccupied with the spiritual and even more so the liturgical.

Its all about Latin, vestments, lace, incense and pink gin.

When I was in Belfast I donned a boiler suit and went out with a shovel and brush.

I can’t imagine Daniel out on the street shovelling and brushing.

Youll not get the smell of the sheep at a Tridentine Mass.

The letter above is well written, sincere and balanced. Among the many good points I think “get a life” is probably the most important. All of the other observations made, speak of a person living in his own bubble. This begins and is cemented in seminary, surrounded by people who have the same opinions and experiences, locked up in a quasi-monastic lifestyle vying for the formators approval. “To spend time with people your own age not connected with the church” is absolutely the antidote to a snobbish faith that looks down on those who don’t practice or believe. How? It allows you to see human decency being practiced for its own sake, to see that people in more complex situations are not bad but struggling to be better, to understand that people will come to God more easily because they find in you a smile, a listening ear or a good deed quietly carried out.

Like

I disagree this is well written. It is far too self indulgent to be a quality piece of communication. It is an extraordinary way to pass advice to a cleric. The false sincerity is a mechanism to publicly criticise another person. The person who wrote this knew exactly what they were doing. It is cruel and hurtful.

Like

I said the same but Pat didn’t think my comment was “worthy of publication”.

Excellent advice from Joseph. I don’t know Fr. Daniel but I suspect he will struggle to accept any of what Joseph offers. There are ‘Fr. Daniels’ in every diocese in Britain and Ireland, men ordained in the last 15 years and they are doing huge harm to our parishes. In their opinion, they are always right and everyone else is wrong, they look down their nose at those of us ordained longer and they assume that we haven’t got a clue, they talk down to the laity and they refuse to accept the pontificate of Francis. Many of them seem to be hiding behind the image which they portray and they dress up in lace vestments, join their hands and think that they are holier than the rest of us. I have no doubt that they struggle with celibacy like most of us but they repress any real or true feelings, which can only lead to bigger problems in the future. Unfortunately, bishops are taking these young men on without any real challenge to their views or their theology. It can only lead to disaster in the future.

@1.00 (hope you weren’t on the 🥃)

If you old priests are so great, why are churches closing, parishes are kaput and your congregation consists only of old ladies?

Like

Someone asked if old priests were so great, why are churches closing ?

There are two reasons for this.

1) There are too many `better` things for the young to do on a Sunday.

2) Since Vatican 2, God has gone from being a punishing God (so people attended church through fear) to a God who forgives (so if folks say “Sorry” on their deathbed, they`ll go straight to Heaven).

Like

For me personally, Sunday without Mass is unthinkable.

I feel I would be hurting the God I try to love, and losing out on the graces I receive at Mass.

I’m not too worried about people not going to church.

But I’m very sad at the thought that people are not conscious of God in their lives, if they’re not.

Even though Father Etienne behaved like an over indulged brat of an only child (even though I don`t think that he is an only child), nevertheless, it is grossly unfair to give him 100% of the blame.

The Bishop made the mistake of giving the appointment to an inexperienced and probably immature new priest, with little or no knowledge of the world outside the seminary. Father Etienne was probably overwhelmed with the baptism of fire in a world outside academia and with no grounding in worldly things and community dynamics, that he would get as a curate in the care of a wise Parish Priest over a few years. What on earth was the Bishop thinking of ? Furthermore, he compounded his error by ignoring the concerns of parishioners for too long.

I believe that the new posting in Carlisle, has a kindly and nice Parish Priest. Unfortunately, such people rarely come with a forceful iron fist in a kid glove. Hopefully Father Etienne and his sidekick, can be pointed on the correct path that will encourage parishioners to attend church, rather than frustrate and anger them.

7.33: You debase only yourself by using feminune pronoyns when speaking about men. With your attitude, perhaps you should cover yourself with the duvet for the day. Such a vacuous comment from a vacuous brain. Pat, younger priests somehow seem to cinsider themselves to be more authentic than those of us ordained many, many years and who gave been taught real lessons about caring, sacrifice, kindness, fidelity and Christ-like living from the people we work with. The younger priests of a Roman training are living in a world of certainties, depend on the tradition of ecclesiology, theology and Thomistic/Augustinian frameworks. Everything is either black or white, right or wrong: There are no in-betweens. I suspect Fr. Etienne has much to learn and life will teach him valuable lessons. I am sure he is well intentioned, a sincere, prayerful person and wants to be a good pastor. We should pray for him and for all priests. Prayerful compassion is a necessary quality for priests. I think the sneering and ridiculing of Etienne by 7.33 is unfortunate and I hope this commenter is not a cleric because he’s an empty headed gombeen.

With regards to point 3. How can children who are not brought to Mass by their parents be the future? Administering the sacraments without people being part of the worshipping community equals cheap grace.
In my local parish when the PP has said that coming to Mass is an expectation, we’ve seen people end up taking the sacraments more seriously and deepen their life of faith. At the next door parish where the priest administered First Holy Communion and Confirmation without them regularly attending Mass, he’s admitted that he’s never seen them again once they have received the sacraments.
Remember that in the Gospel Jesus tells us.
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it”.

You’re advocating refusal of sacraments to children of parents who don’t attend Mass frequently.
Where do people like you pick up these dysfunctional solutions?

Like

Because the church doesn’t have any functional solutions, functional priests or in fact anything vaguely sensible or practical. Do try to get with the program.

Like

3:33 A very narrow view. Actually the church has a mission, and unless you get people to experience the faith you won’t get committed people.

Like

It is not dysfunctional solutions.
It is a fact the Catholic Church does not want uncommitted people as they need to make a commitment to their Faith not use it for baptism Communions, Confirmations, Weddings and funeral that is NOT faith.
They make commitments if they are season tick holders at football so why not to their Faith.

We live with a legacy of priest boom, an era where we had so many priests we exported them in the hundreds.
Can we step back and confront the reality of Sunday Mass. Was it always a weekly attendance, a regular attendance or an occasional attendance?
In many cultures once a month is considered sufficiently regular. Much of Ireland is now committed to ‘doing our duty’ at Christmas and Easter – which is too far in the other extreme.
The best of Catholics are those who attend as regularly as suits their capacity, but also actually live Catholic values on a day to day basis.

St Cuthbert’s it is sad but usually it survives because of holidaymakers in the summer and when they had the Social club next door it was busier.
Some Parishes have those numbers at week day Masses.
The parishes need amalgamated and closed.
Father Daniel has been doing cleaning and paining and decorating to make them look ok as they have been neglected for years.
Whatever happened to the large sum from the sale of the Social club.
Sunday Benediction I have never seen Sunday Benediction in 20 years lucky if you see a Priest after Sunday mid day masses.

the legal entity for the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of
England and Wales. It supports the legal, financial and
charitable activities of the Bishops’ Conference, its
departments, agencies and offices.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales,
whose work is funded by the CaTEW levy, have
announced a slight reduction in the amount of levy for
2021 due to the pandemic.
The amount of levy due from St Cuthbert’s this year is
is £524.53.
The amount of levy due from St John Vianney & St
Monica’s this year is £1110.59.
These are very high taxes for failed parishes with tiny attendances in a deprived shithole like Blackpool, so how much are plum parishes taxed for this bureaucracy?

Fr Etienne seems like a classic example of a repressed and frustrated homosexual who has found in the Catholic priesthood both a safe haven and an outlet for his repression (lace, long flowing dresses) and frustration (dysfunctional and anti social behaviour) perfect storm of qualities which he will, no doubt, inflict on his parishioners for many years to come until the inevitable breakdown, meltdown or crisis ensues.

St Bernadette’s – 1 Priest
Holy Family – 1 Priest who covers from retirement
Sacred Heart -1 Priest
St Kentigern’s and Christ the King – 2 Priests
Our Lady of the Assumption – 1 Priest who is moving out, so this Parish is merging with below next week
St John Vianney and St Cuthbert’s – 1 Priest and one in retirement who helps out
St Monica’s already sold

Probably an opportunity to review the whole model and shut the majority them all apart from the main one in the Centre that can surely be reached by public transport. Must cost a fortune for the upkeep of 8 buildings. Such a shame really. Blackpool was once a vibrant place for visitors and tourism. You should read the article before pronouncing on its content. The lady declares she was relieved of her weekly column. She doesn’t provide any evidence for Hume’s role in her departure apart from saying ‘I am told.’ he was involved. In other words, hearsay. A far cry from your claim it was on Hume’s orders. Your gripe seema to be about the orientation of people who have died. Sad for you that you have carried this resentment for all those years. Warlock died in 1996.

Frankie has repeatedly gone on about these young priests dressed up to the nines in antiquated clerical clothing and yet they seem to rebel even more. Their bishops don’t help by going along with it and even giving the Queen of Queens’ Mother Burke a run for her money. Time to put them in Sorgente vestments at their ordinations and first masses and stop all this nonsense from escalating.

If only they could be like Francis’s mate, Zanchetta, whom he hid in the Vatican and created a special job for him. The chickens are coming home to roost in this one.

7.31, for the millionth time, Fr McCamley, Rory, Cardinals Tobin, McCarrich, Weurl, Cupich, Mahoney, Daaneels, Pope Paul VI, James Martin, Zanchetta, etc etc all were or are unrepressed homosexuals who hate the Latin Mass and the sort of vestments John XXIII wore.

What a lovely turnout of comments for Miss Etienne, Bp Pat. Let’s hope she takes heed of all the listed recommendations and doesn’t end up… well, let’s just say, “on sabbatical” like so many before her.

Those who end up MIA are libs, invariably. Poor sense of sin gets them into hot water, or they became priests thinking they were social workers and end up unhappy.

First time poster:
1. What a wholly ridiculous way to pass on advice. Yes, you may know Fr Dan reads this blog, but surely he also reads, say, the Mail! Self serving narcissism.
2. Why do people keep negging on Blackpool. I would suggest these people have a very limited experience of the town which, yes, has its issues, but is at the same time can be a pleasant and wholesome place.
3. There are more than the three parishes mentioned in the comments in Blackpool. Christ the King and St Kentigern’s for example, has a young and thriving congregation.
4. Why are people so worried about what somebody is wearing? Get over yourselves. If he wants to wear lace, let the guy wear lace. If he wants to wear jeans, and a T-shirt, let him do so too. It’s not really your concern.
5. The attack on such a new priest doled out in this blog is ridiculous and mean spirited. No wonder there is a shortage of vocations when this is the attitude being displayed.
6. You’re all very quick to snipe from behind your phone screens but I wonder if any of you would have the stones to provide your full name so as to take ownership of your bile.
My name is James O’Donnell, I was born and lived in Blackpool for many years. Three years ago I moved to the north of the diocese when I got married. I am a 31 year old divorced lay Catholic. Some of you may know me. If you do, please feel free to make yourself known and challenge anything I have said and we can have an open dialogue, not a ridiculous hate filled jab fest from behind a screen.

As an update to Rev Fr Etienne since going to Carlisle, he hasn`t changed at all. During the readings at Mass, instead of sitting facing the congregation as he should do, he prefers to sit side-on to them. He seems to not understand that it is not the trimmings and the pre Vatican 2 that makes a priest, it is the person that the priest is. That way, people are drawn to the faith because they have respect for the man. A priest can`t place himself as a paragon of sanctity and expect his people to climb up to his level, he has to go down to their level and guide them upwards.
