It has emerged that Fr Michael Lomasney, RIP, died from AIDS related pneumonia. Tragically this was exacerbated by codeine and alcohol addictions.
The death of any human being is always a sad tragedy. The fact that he was only 60 makes his death all the more tragic.
At this stage, Fr Lomasney is out of it all. He has been before the Lord, had his conversation, experienced God’s forgiveness and healing, and is hopefully experiencing the happiness of paradise.
SERIOUS QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS:
It has been established that Fr Lomasney was gay.
He was very secually active with multiple gay partners. These included seminarians (he was a frequent visitor to Maynooth) other priests, monks and lay men.
Therefore it is legitimate to speculate that he may have infected some of these men with HIV. This is a harsh and tragic reality, which can no longer be ignored.
It is noteworthy T uh at for Michael Lomasney to progress from having HIV to AIDS or HIV / AIDS-related pneumonia that a) he did not know he was HIV + , or b) he was not diligent in taking his antiretroviral medications.
Doctors who have expertise in Northern Ireland apprise us that 25% of the people with HIV are oblivious to their infection.
AS A MATTER OF URGENCY ALL THOSE WHO WERE INTIMATELY INVOLVED WITH MICHAEL LOMASNEY – SEMINARIANS, PRIRSTS, MONKS AND LAY MEN SHOULD BE TESTED FOR HIV AND OTHER SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES.
This can be done confidentially; and if detected early – HIV is an extremely treatable and has no tangible or detrimental impact on the infected person. However, to ignore the infection can lead to long term detrimental health consequences and sadly, death.
BISHOP CREAN
Did WILLIAM CREAN know Fr Lomasney’s cause of death? Was the Diocese of Cloyne privately paying for Fr Lomasney’s HIV treatment?
If so, when did Bishop Crean first learn of Fr Lomasney’s condition? Why has he remained silent?
I know that Bishop Crean has been contacted about an allegation regarding Fr Lomasney and an individual who is now a deacon. Has Bishop Crean warned that individual about Fr Lomasney’s pre-existing health condition? Has anyone else contacted Bishop Crean about their involvement with Fr Lomasney? And, has Bishop Crean notified those individuals?
Did Bishop Crean contact the public health authorities and notify them that one of his priests died of a serious communicable disease? If not, why not?
In light of this blog will he now notify the public health authorities?
BISHOPS, PRIESTS AND MONKS/WITH HIV?
The number of Irish bishops, priests and monks with HIV is an important consideration.
My considerable experience and my educated guess, would put the figure at somewhere between 100 and 200 and possibly more.
Its a question the Irish Church has not addressed.
