Fr Benedict Andersen is a sincere, gentle, holy, Benedictine monk who has truly fallen foul of a mad monk in MARK KIRBY – and a ruthless episco-pus in TOM DEENIHAN.
And in fairness to Fr Benedict, he prays everyday for his two nemeses.
These men have forced him into exile, leaving him without a ministry, a home and canonical faculties.
This week the long suffering and brow beaten Fr Benedict spoke to the radical Catholic publication THE PILLAR and its brave devout Catholic editor JD FLYNN.
He told how he fell victim to Kirby’s emotional and sexual infatuation with him.

Silverstream was welcomed to Meath, Ireland, by a well-meaning but naive Bishop Michael Smith.

The comment in the New York ad clerum, describing Fr Benedict as an outlaw, is one of the casually done cruelties that clergy can excel at.
The mad monk, Dom Kirby, comes across as completely deranged and creepy. I had some sympathy for Silverstream but don’t after reading this. Dennihan seems to be a useless vacillator, and the so-called Visitation was a farce.
Good investigative journalism by The Pillar, though you broke the story long before they did, Pat.

What has happened to Dom Andersen is the absolute textbook church retaliation and as the article says, designed to get him out.
If they think he has broken the seal they should hold a canonical trial – as it is he has no recourse.
My own opinion is that the church is rotten to the core and his going to the Pillar was the right thing to do, because if he had tried Rome it would have gone on for years and like this anyone thinking of joining Silverdaddy can know what it’s really like.
However doing that will end any prospect of getting taken on elsewhere. If Silverstream was in a congregation he could have recourse through mechanisms in the constitutions to the Abbot president or even ask to go to another monastery on a trial basis.
Just to be clear – it is very clear from what is described in the article that it looks like Dom Kirby not only isn’t able to lead a monastery but doesn’t appear to understand the elements of monastic life. Prudence is a great virtue in monasteries and this includes keeping your personal history to yourself.
As for Dom Andersen – well done good and faithful servant. You have done the right thing and can look back on this with self respect.

There’s a fundamental anomaly in this case. How did it happen that this man was ordained a priest BEFORE he was solemnly professed? Who ordained him to the diaconate and to the presbyterate?

You won’t be surprised to find out it was Bishop Michael Smith who ordained him priest (https://dioceseofmeath.ie/silverstream-priory-celebrates-ordination-of-dom-benedict/)
There is a certain incestuousness to this and perhaps Silverstream is the perfect illustration of why new institutes of consecrated life should be guided by existing ones, where the abbot may be putting it about but can at least tell the superior not to hear the monks’ confessions and that you have to be solemnly professed before ordination.

Even without these revelations Silverstream is odd. Before the council perpetual adoration was something nuns, not monks, did. There are existing congregations of Benedictines who do this and they’re all nuns.
In the middle of the choir at Silverstream is a candlestick thing with a rope and the adoring monk puts the rope round his neck:
https://images.app.goo.gl/HAgmMxHzugBQsNA27
To sophisticated eyes this immediately gives the place kinky undertones. It may have been less so before the sexual revolution but since then it’s as well to be a bit wise to how things look to the contemporary more sexualized mind.
Before the council there was a common practice in religious life of bodily mortification such as whipping – obviously another thing which comes across as kinky now. I believe the practice had been dropped completely in ordinary monasteries but wonder whether it goes on at Silverstream – I have read that it is used in many trad monasteries.
Similarly the chapter of faults has mostly either been dropped or altered so you only accuse yourself of sins – the practice of accusing others was always open to going wrong.
Basically, pre Vat 2 monastic life was a sado-masochist’s wet dream and attempts to reconstruct it are suspicious for that reason alone.

I read the story in The Pillar about Fr Benedict which seemed to me to be very fair and balanced. Of course, it is from one perspective and there is always more than one side to any story. Whilst being honest, we all tend to focus on those elements which show us in the best light.
Whatever he may have done – and I suspect he has acted entirely honourably, faithfully and with the best of motives – Fr Benedict has not been treated well either in his formation, his ordination (for which he appears to have been under-prepared), his monastic life or in the aftermath. He is paying a heavy price and I suspect there will be no way back for him.
There is a rather cult-like feel about Silverstream with their focus on the EF. Its closure/suppression needs to be and its members sent to other more healthy monastic houses. Sadly, if what I read of the English Benedictine Congregation is true elsewhere (their outposts in Scotland are being subject to the usual criticism this week and very rightly so), finding a healthy, integrated and prayerful religious community might be hard to find.
I find this so very sad: traditionally religious houses prayed for the outside world. Their activities now appear rather more dubious.

Yes textbook church retaliation. Diocese of Meath and NY outed the founder of silverstream.
One thing jumped out at me was ‘kill the messenger but not the message.
In this case, the messenger was Fr Benedict. I would say he’s probably right to go to Pillar, given the fact rcc outed him as a’ perp’. Shocking indeed cos its Kirby who started it.
You ask yourself a question, what got the diocese of Meath to gain from all of this by outing fr Benedict and keeping silverstream going at the same time etc?
Is it money that they seek or diocese of Meath may want to close it down and take the money themselves?
What does the donor (wife of PP guy I think) will have to say or will she have a say in all of this re money which was part of her donation?
Diocese of Meath along 3 visitors was corrupted cos they ignored the main issue and issued lopsided report if that is the case?
How about for independent review and audit from outside, but not of the church nor their links to the church or diocese.
Little reminder of the book and the reviewer who criticised the book.

Bishop Pat, you were way ahead of the press when it came to breaking this scandal in the Irish church. Again you have been proved right, but poor Dom Benedict. This a such a mess. His story is illustrative of how the church attempts to penalise the whistleblower. Bishop Deenihan must be apoplectic with rage. He has been shown to have presided over scandal, done nothing, and was complicit in the coverup, so hopefully he will not be translating to an archbishopric any time soon. The best thing Deenihan can do now is seek the suppression of Silverstream — help the monks who wish to continue this form of life find suitable communities. Many are American so they could have all the Latin liturgy they want at Clear Creek Abbey in Oklahoma. It is a foundation of Fontgombault Abbey. Those that wish to remain in Ireland could consider Glenstal Abbey, Abbot Brendan might be feeling charitable, or go to the Benedictine community in Rostrevor. At all costs they need to stay away from Mount Melleray Abbey as Dom Dick has an unhealthy proclivity for barebacking.

I suspect there are few Cistercian monasteries that are safe to enter. The Irish episcopal conference have received concerns from all of the communities. A culture of bullying, abuse and intimidation has been normalised. The current system of visitations from an abbot of other monasteries is not fit for purpose. Evidently, it is acceptable for an abbot to leave their monastic community to visit inappropriate premises and domestic houses to engage in sexual activity. The monastic model is very outdated. The power awarded to abbots has been abused and antiquated rules and procedures are used to bully other monks. I was part of a monastic community. I left to become a priest in an alternative setting. I still suffer from trauma as a result of my monastic life which was full of intimidation and sexual propositions. The piety that is promoted in Cistercian communities is fiction. They are rife with dysfunction and power playing. There is no leadership from the top. Problems are ignored. I despair at the lack of leadership and principle. I pray for these communities every day.

It was known he was studying in in America. He was seen back at Silverstream before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was also an open secret in the Diocese of Meath that the complainant was Dom Benedict. I am surprised that Ms. Wassan does not appreciate that the church is riven with the ills of ecclesiastical gossip. The treatment of Dom Andersen is appalling. The purpose in getting a canon lawyer is to see whether “something can be done”. The monk concerned has to realise some situations don’t have much of a solution. If he hasn’t out of curiosity looked up procedures for professing and being ordained, he must be a dullard and getting the sense out of him must have been uphill for this canon lawyer. He has to realise all the institutions and authorities related to the situation are non God-ordained and have no moral standing; this probably also contributed to her pulling out.
He has to properly weigh up the various elements in his background. It’s no use him drifting from one internally inconsistent system to another, adding more incompatibility in the process. Did he have a “vocation director” and what country was that in? He HAS done very right to talk (a bit late). He needs secular interests such as critical thinking and agnosticism. Smith is an immoral bishop for trying to outsource his moral duties at an institution of “diocesan right”.
