TODAYS LETTER TO EAMON FITZGERALD – ABBOT GENERAL – CISTERCIANS.

Fitzgerald

Dear Dom Eamon,

In recent days, it has been brought to my attention that you are currently visiting Mount Melleray Abbey. When one looks at “Compline – Night Prayer” for the evening of August 20; one can observe you [Dom Eamon], the Abbot General of the Order of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance in the choir stalls. Separated from you by a few feet is the current Abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey, Dom Richard Purcell, who in turn is seated close to Fr. Donal Davis.

Purcell

It is, of course, always an edifying to see monks in church for the monastic office. To the non-informed outsider this would look perfectly normal; but, it belies an ugly reality; it is, in fact, an act of on-going dissimulation. By this, I mean, your presence at the abbey is akin to the photographs that were circulated of Fr. Marcial Maciel Degallado, the disgraced founder of the Legion of Christ with Pope John Paul II. These photographs served a twofold purpose: a) they served as a means of deflecting from Degallado’s well-known sexual misconduct; and, b) they also visually told the world that Fr. Degallado was untouchable.

Dom Eamon, are you telling us that standing beside Dom Purcell in choir that Dom Purcell is untouchable? In doing so, are you attempting to give Dom Purcell, the ecclesiastical approbation that comes from your position as the Abbot General? Because, if that is the inference we are invited to take — it is a strategy that is NOT working, and one that will end in failure.

A more contemporary example might-be instructive. Everybody knew that Cardinal McCarrick was interfering with seminarians — it was an open secret. In the same manner, Richard Purcell is well-known on the Irish gay scene — a reality that you seem incapable to comprehend or unwilling to accept for reasons that remain arcane.

But, gay monks who are sexually active are not a new phenomenon. The former Benedictine Abbot of Monte Cassino, Pietro Vittorelli, OSB, and the Irish-born former Benedictine Abbot of Dormition Abbey (Earl “Gregory” Collins, formerly a monk and priest of Glenstal Abbey) are two recent examples. The rampant homosexuality in monasteries was eloquently demonstrated by St. Peter Damien, Doctor of the Church, in his seminal work, Liber Gomorrhianus, a book that could be argued that serves as a practical guide to the church of today. Hence, I am not highlighting a new reality.

The significance ascribed to office of Abbot General is beautifully reflected within the Constitutions of the Order. Sadly, you now bring that office into disrepute as your presence at Mount Melleray Abbey as the incumbent office-holder is legitimating a cover-up. You are attempting to provide the thinnest possible veneer of credibility to Dom Purcell. In fact, the more I think about it Richard Purcell could be now described as the “Cardinal McCarrick” of the Irish church — everybody knows the ugly reality, but nobody will take responsibility.

Mount Melleray

However, I invite you to cast your mind back to our conversation on the evening of September 13, 2020, at 6.39 pm, when we spoke for eighteen (18) minutes and thirty-six (36) seconds. Your candour was extraordinary. I suspect this is due to the fact that presumed that you were speaking to bona fide member of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference. As I have previously indicated, it would be churlish for you to deny our conversation. And, with the passing of time I suspect you now bitterly regret having being so candid with yours truly.

Nonetheless, you freely and spontaneously acknowledged that the allegations of sexual misconduct that I made against Dom Purcell were in fact, true. It was clear that you and the decision-makers within the Cistercian Order had known about Purcell’s misconduct for a considerable amount of time. Your observation that it was hoped the incident at Roscrea “had been a one off” is a corporate admission of Purcell’s culpability.

One, among the many sexual partners of Dom Purcell at Roscrea (I have learned of others) was an ex-priest of the Diocese of Killaloe, Neil Dargan. You may recall, I mentioned in one of our follow-up e-mails that it was Fr. Dargan who was sexually active with Dom Purcell in Roscrea. Was it Fr. Dargan you were referring to when you made your comment about Dom Purcell? The said, Fr. Neil Dargan, who “encountered” Dom Purcell in Roscrea has acknowledged his sexual relationship with Dom Purcell (in a non-confessional setting) to another priest, who in turn revealed it to me for the greater good of the Irish Cistercians.

You also may-be interested to know that recently I received correspondence indicating that an ex-student of the Cistercian College, recognised Dom Purcell from his attendance at a gay get together (to be charitable) or a gay gang-bang (to be more accurate). It is a small world! And, I do not need to mention to you how notorious Dom Purcell was during his student days at Oxford.

Consequently, the in-action of the Abbot General and his Council about Dom Purcell begets the following legitimate questions. Why have you not asked Dom Purcell to step aside? Have you asked Dom Purcell to resign? Why have you not instituted a canonical investigation into Dom Purcell’s behaviour? Why do you not petition the Holy See for to commence an investigation overseen by a neutral monk from one of the Benedictine Congregations? Why are the Cistercians covering-up for Dom Purcell? Do you consider that the priestly faculties of Dom Purcell to minister within the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore should be preventively suspended by a Decree of the Ordinary of the diocese? Have you and will you bring these allegations to the attention of the diocesan Ordinary? If not; why not?

Have you considered contacting Dom Mauro-Guiseppe Lepori, O. Cist, the Abbot General of the Order of Cistercians of the Common Observance to recommend an abbot to conduct an Apostolic Visitation of Mount Melleray Abbey? After all, an abbot from another Cistercian Congregation would be sympathetic the Cistercian charism. At the time of this writing, we are not aware of any abbot from that congregation who has a proclivity for visiting gay saunas. Would you like me to send an e-mail to Dom Lepori asking on your behalf for some recommendations?

What are you Dom Eamon Fitzgerald, hiding? Is it reasonable to suggest that your on-going in-action about Dom Purcell would appear to an objective outsider that you are somehow morally compromised? And, begets another question — if you institute canonical proceedings against Dom Purcell — is there something potentially nefarious in your past that Dom Purcell might bring into the public domain? Do you fear that Dom Purcell might bring your standing as the Abbot General into disrepute? These are, I submit, legitimate questions; ones that require answers.

Dom Eamon, it is never too late to do the right thing. You now need to act for the greater good of Mount Melleray Abbey, the Irish Cistercians, and the Order across the globe. But, your on-going in-action about these allegations beget two illations: a) you are morally compromised; and, b) incapable of acting decisively by exercising appropriate leadership.

Your failure to act is not conducive to the greater good of Mount Melleray Abbey and for the Cistercians. If for whatever reason you are incapable; it is respectfully suggested that you should immediately resign as Abbot General; because this matter is not going away, and the longer it goes on the worse it is going to get, however, that choice is ultimately, yours.

I am going to conclude this e-mail with a post that was made on my blog on November 5, 2020 at 6.59 pm. It is telling and insightful:

“Remember, when Covid is over, and you meet Abbot Purcell and shake his hand…… Remember, given his proclivity for rawhide barebacking [the practice of having anal intercourse without a condom], that hand is liable also to have been where the sun does not shine, such is the menu card of sexual activities that is on offer in places like the Boilerhouse [a gay sauna in Dublin]. Now, by and large, I could not care what goes on behind closed doors. Each to their own. Other peoples’ business. But, for someone like a Cistercian monk, priest and abbot, with publicly professed vows of chastity and celibacy representing himself as a religious figure who implicitly upholds the RC church’s teaching on sexual morality….well, I think you know what he should do. Simple”

In conclusion, it is my prayer that Mary, the Mother of God and of all Cistercians intercedes for you with the Holy Spirit to give you the courage to do the right thing, finally

In Christ,

  • + Pat Buckley.

+Pat, I am saddened about the scandal at Mount Melleray Abbey. I am pleased that you are highlighting this scandal again on the blog. You are now rightly asking questions about Fr. Eamon. It does look very bad. I would love if Richard Purcell was stupid enough to do a “Mr. Keenan” and have a solicitor send you a letter threatening legal action. Your reply would be just devastating and hilarious to read.

Yes, about ‘Mary’. All Cistercians should have the pre-nominal assignation of ‘M’, before their religious name, representing ‘Mary’ of course, as was the practice of nuns. I think that the Holy Theotokos would blush at the activities of one of her sons if he called himself ‘Mary’ Prucell O.C.S.O.

I seriously believe bishops and religious superiors, just breathe a sigh of relief when they hear these reports and say to themselves ‘at least it’s not kids’ . They only act upon sexual misconduct if forced too. I think most have cottoned on to the fact that they must act upon a report of child abuse – more out of self-preservation rather than the well-being of the child. Sex between a priest and an adult, if they’re not classified as vulnerable, is ignored. It’s as though the hierarchy has accepted that a priest or monk’s promise of celibacy is worthless.

I apologise this is not directly related to todays blog, and for it’s length.
I comment to follow from Magna’s comments yesterday at 1.37 & 2pm.
In acknowledging truth in Magna’s comments on my perspective, don’t think I humour or agree with all he says. Regular readers know of my strong criticisms of his comments while in a previous very negative hostile personalised phase. Nevertheless there is truth in his 1.37 & 2pm comments yesterday. In many things he is ‘on the ball.’
In trying to follow the Golden Rule, (Do as you would be done to), I follow a maxim which long predates Christianity. Christianity just piggybacked this much older maxim, and the N. T. presents it to the naive as a wholly new moral concept. I believe our mutually dependent humanity prospers better under the Golden Rule.
I have no expectation for an imaginary post death Heaven, and feel much better in believing there is no post death arbiter of my merits for some ultimate destination for me. For me, death is a complete finality of my non corporeal essence. I will leave but memories.
I have searched for evidence of religious beliefs in a Creator God and an afterlife, but find none. Absolutely! Please contradict me with contrary evidence.
In my experience, all avenues pursuing validity for religious belief founders on every score. In the end they all rely on aspirational hopeful blind beliefs, described as “FAITH” as if that blind concept somehow validates and gives it credence. Let me say here that any reliance on “The Bible ” is laughable in view of its dubious origins, inherent contradictions, and lack of independent historical corroboration.
From my studies in psychiatry, psychology and sociology I’ve become aware of the imperative factors fostering, developing, and reinforcing religious beliefs to the point of blind acquiescence. I look back on my own cradle Catholic upbringing and how my teenage youthful idealistic naivety led me into almost becoming part of the RCC clerical establishment.
Now almost 80, I am very content to accept what I understand as reality, that humans have made and perpetuate beliefs in God and an afterlife dependent on ones life here on Earth. I’m just thankful I do not believe in some vague concept of an “afterlife ” in some imaginary Heaven, …..while ignoring all the contrary evidence, …….just because it might make me feel better.
To acknowledge my inevitable oblivion is actually empowering.

Pat, your letter published yesterday answers a question that has always been in my mind.
Did you introduce yourself as Bishop Pat Buckley ? Explaining that you weren’t a member of the Irish Bishop’s Conference ? If you deceived him in anyway….you’re sneaky.

Like

Yes I did because I am a bishop.

After my notoriety for 35 years surely Eamon knew who I was.

Like

@8:27 I suspect you are a priest since you don’t understand what deceit is. If he introduced himself as Bishop Pat Buckley any inference that he is a Roman Catholic bishop is in the abbot’s head. For a comparison if a Church of Ireland bishop introduces himself as ‘Bishop John Smith’ he isn’t saying more than that.
Your suspicion that Pat was being deceitful is very telling.
There, there, Fr Abbot, diddums make the mistake of talking to Pat Buckley….

Your letter contradicts that:
‘I suspect this is due to the fact that presumed that you were speaking to bona fide member of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference.’

Exactly, because of your notoriety in the country he must have known who you were. He also must have known you would not have published without checking the veracity of the allegations. By doing nothing he is only causing more scandal and disgrace for his Order.

Like

No, it doesn’t. I think the modesty in the wording of this letter is delicious! As for the Abbot General he is merely an indecisive, inattentive kind I’ve met everywhere.

They’ll brazen it out, Pat, they always do. Unless the police and courts become involved in a case they do nothing. There is no police involvement in this case, nor will there be, so nothing will happen. Dom Dick will still be abbot a year from now.

@8.53 Don’t be so sure there won’t be a few protagonists involved in these groups sitting in the witness stand in the next while. Perhaps not as accused but as those with knowledge of very serious goings on.

They’ll brazen it out alright and will minimise the scandal. Based on the blog stories on this scandal, the abbot must resign. At the very, very least he must not seek re-election nor should he be re-elected. 4 out of 6 years. 2 years to go.

I heard a diocesan Treasurer say and I quote: ‘As long as they (the clergy) don’t interfere with children it doesn’t really matter what they do.’
I believe that this is pretty accurate and why clerical scandal thrives, like a cockroach, they see themselves as untouchable and beyond the law, including any moral or ethical law.
Purcell is brazen because he’s been given permission to be brazen.
Bishop Pats ministry of exposing this kind of corruption gives me hope that at least someone cares and understands how demoralising and undermining of faith this kind of behaviour is – I imagine Purcell missed the memo about hypocrisy from Pope Francis (mind you a memo from PF about hypocrisy is a bit rich).
I find the notion that it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that Purcell is giving marriage instruction to some poor unsuspecting engaged couple by day and attending a gay sauna for some rawhide by night.
The sheer hypocrisy is screaming and makes me dizzy.
Oh and I’m sure that Purcell has enough on everybody so that everyone tows the line – you know, keep stum or my scandal and shame becomes your scandal and shame.

Yesterday I watched the documentary Rape Victims of the Catholic Church (thanks, whoever linked it here) and now this post creates a very clear impression in my mind.
Rape, sexual misconduct and in fact all sorts of misconduct are perfectly acceptable in the church. I agree with the comments above that they have been forced to act on child abuse (as little as possible) by the world outside.
However in 2021 it is not business as usual and that will be their downfall. If you wind back before the Boston Globe and before the internet, most people would only have had small slivers of information.
Now, the reason people pull their kids away from priests, is the information is out there. The other deviations than paedophilia aren’t so much in the news but they are out there, and that is what will change the church’s world.
Nobody can realistically enter several monasteries or seminaries without knowing exactly what is going on in them. Anybody who reads this blog can see exactly what the clergy are like.
Attendance is down, donations are down. The only way for the church from here is down.

I heard a diocesan Treasurer say and I quote: ‘As long as they (the clergy) don’t interfere with children it doesn’t really matter what they do.’

A deeply depressing statement but one that resonates with me as being completely true.

Purcell is brazen because he’s been given permission to be brazen. But the question is who is giving Purcell permission and licence to be brazen?

I agree with your analysis that Purcell probably has dirt on several people so it is in their vested interests to continue.

Like

+Pat, a powerful letter to the Abbey General of the Cistercians. I suspect he will ignore it. The focus on Purcell’s behaviour will eventually get traction. Eventually people will get tired of protecting him or his protectors will be exposed and he will be left naked.

I am not surprised to see that you have had negative commentary attempting to impugn your integrity. Every cleric in Ireland knows about Pat Buckley. You are infamous. All the same it is extraordinary, there are attacking you about a lack of clarity on your status but they are ignoring the rampant hypocrisy of Dom Richard Purcell and the complicity of Dom Fitzgerald in keeping it all hushed.

One legitimate criticism that can be made of your letter is that you have not attacked Bishop Cullinan. In the past, you have asserted he knows about the allegations that have been made about Purcell, so the fact Cullinan has not removed Purcell faculties in Waterford & Lismore indicates that he is a willing accomplice in protecting Purcell. I know Cullinan has no jurisdiction in Mount Melleray. He does have jurisdiction in his diocese so he could send a powerful message. But he has chosen not to do. He is then by extension a protector of Purcell. Why is he doing that? And that is a legitimate question.

That would mean him behaving like a responsible adult standing up for values and his professed religion. We know the bishops aren’t.

20 years ago the shame would have made you step down and retreat either into some quiet corner of the monastery e.g, Hargreaves “ we both know why I am here” ( a massive breach of monastic hospitality), or into lay life. Now they act like brazen hussies and are untouchable. Dom Dick thinks he has a god given right to breed guys in the boiler house sling and then celebrate the sacred mysteries with the same hands. He disgusts me.

Like

Yes that’s a seismic change. I don’t agree but can see why they covered up, but this openly ignoring the whole reason for their life means that monasteries will either be/already are gay knocking shops with a bit of prayer populated by psychopaths or else will die out.
My money is on the latter.
Why don’t these people just leave and lead an honestly gay but churchgoing life?

Historically. priesthood is evil, and its corrupted, filthy harvest is there for all to see.
Priests, from vested privileged interest, choose not to see it and attack anyone who draws attention to it; but it will not go away. On the contrary, it will keep being added to until, finally, the world grows throughly sick at the sight of these men and what they truly represent: worldliness, kiddie-fiddling, unbridled self-ambition and self-aggrandisement, deceit and lies…in a nutshell, all that is anti-Christ.

Those protecting Richard Purcell need to watch their backs. Richard is ruthless and ambitious and will see this as a temporary little set back. Richard depends on the institution and structure of the RCC to protect him, and he may be right. But be warned, Richard has the ability to turn on those loyal to him overnight and throw everyone under the bus. There can be little doubt Richard has the dirt on so many in the RCC, he has been very active on the gay scene (insert jokes here) and has made friends with many on the gay scene. He will have been told little stories and anecdotes late at night, guaranteed that these have been noted and filed. If Purcell falls the implications for the Irish RCC will be seismic. Names will follow, leaks will be slow and strategic and many clerics will be sleeping uneasy. This is not a scandal that will produce one Big Bang but a slow and toxic release of very private details – dates and times. My betting is that Purcell will be protected at all costs. The price is too high.

Purcell Name Meaning
English, Welsh, and Irish (of Norman origin): from Old French pourcel ‘piglet’ (Latin porcellus, a diminutive of porcus ‘pig’), hence a metonymic occupational name for a swineherd, or a nickname, perhaps affectionate in tone. This is a common surname in Ireland, having become established there in the 12th century.

The Abbot isn’t only incompetent in terms of his oversight of appointments. I wonder whether he hasn’t broken the law by divulging personal information about a monk of the congregation to someone who didn’t have a need to know the information and presumably without Dick’s consent.

I know Dom Eamon Fitzgerald. I have dealt with him on several occasions. He is an interesting paradox. On a first meeting, he can come across as cold, distant, and aloof, but he has a quick wit and can be very funny. He is very good company one-to-one and can be genuinely warm. He is compassionate. He is hard on himself, and he is sincerely seeking God, (I think). Having read this blog I am not so sure what to believe.

His novice master the late Fr Kevin Fogarty, who died in March 2016 was very proud that his novice was elected Abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey and was subsequently elected Abbot General. His candidacy to become the major superior was greatly assisted by the Cistercian nuns, who were and continue to be very favourably disposed to Dom Eamon. He was not the preferred successor by the monks to Dom Bernardo Olivera, whom Dom Eamon succeeded.

Before his election as Abbot General, Dom Eamon was deeply frustrated in Mount Melleray Abbey. The community resisted some of his innovations. He was very particular about vocations. He used to do his Lectio Divina in French in order to retain his competence in the language for conversing with the French-speaking Cistercian houses. I like Dom Eamon very much, but I have not seen or spoken to him in some years. He is a bit of a control freak who at times can be utterly incapable of making a decision so I am surprised to read that Dom Eamon was so indiscreet when he spoke to you Pat Buckley about Dom Richard Purcell, who I do not know, and whom I have never met.

Dom Eamon is over the age of 75, so he is ineligible to be re-elected Abbot General, and his successor will be elected at the next General Chapter scheduled to take place next year in Assisi. Then we will have to see if Fr Fitzgerald will return to Mount Melleray Abbey to live out the remainder of his mortal days.

When Fr Purcell was first elected Abbot of Mount St Joseph, a dispensation had to be given to enable him to assume the office of abbot, because he did not meet these canonical requirements on age. It is my understanding that the dispensation at the time was given with some reluctance. How times have changed. I make no comment on the allegations but if they are true, then we are witnessing a massive coverup that is being actively assisted by Dom Fitzgerald and that is very disappointing. If these allegations are true, then Dom Eamon needs to be continuously confronted to ensure that these allegations are properly investigated.

The dissolution of the monasteries and the setting up of Courts of Augmentation, one of the greatest injustices and acts of barbarism of the last millennium, comparable to the activities of the Taliban, was the work of Thomas Cromwell primarily. It had nothing to do with sex but with money and power. It was almost a replica of the destruction of the Templars some 225 years earlier. They were accused by Philip IV and Pope Clement V of sexual immorality when in reality, it was the their property and wealth which were the target. The same king had expelled the Jews from France almost a decade earlier and with the same aim.
There was propaganda involved in all three instances: the expulsion of Jews, the extirpation of Templars and the dissolution of monasteries but all shamelessly fabricated for a similar reason.

He gets pissy with the public and hits them if they cross the line.
He’s bezzy with Venezuelan President who is a Marxist who violently abused how own people – even into death.
He’s sucked up to China and recognises the Overground State Sponsored Loads of money Church and doesn’t recognise now the long suffering and persecuted Underground Church.
The word hypocrite has its roots in the Gk word for ‘actor’ or ‘player’ – I think PF could be fairly described as an actor and player but no more or less than PJPII or Benedict.

@ Mr. Mulvihill.

Mr. Mulvihill, I agree with you that Dom Louf is one of the finest writers of Cistercian spirituality in recent times. Perhaps more than most of the commentariat on this blog; you can explain why Neil Dargan maintaining his a steadfast silence about his relationship with Richard Purcell? Why is he remaining silent? Why is he content to be complicit in the cover-up? Does Purcell have dirt on Dargan. Were they indulged in some kind of joint enterprise in the past that had potentially criminal implications?

Like

Neil Dargan is the most honorable person I have ever know. He is incapable of the duplicity/ deceit of the personages/ institutions and opinions of which he finds himself enmeshed. His wholesome life now is beyond the aptitude’s of either the RCC or most of the readers here. He is as good a man as has ever lived. I have paid a price for the multitudinous suspicions of me. Cold water swimming helps me with that !
I am happy to be free of the seismic and toxic as set out by an earlier contributor today.

If he is that good why does he not tell the truth and rid us of this lecherous monk – or is he just thinking of himself and his own ease?

4.24: Relevant and necessary questions which Mulvihill must answer. He knows the truth about his friend. There is a big connect between Dom Richard and No all. Mr. Bullocks Mulvo knows truth which is being covered up. Why are you, Pat, allowing Mulvo to spew out such crazy comments but more importantly, why are you not following up on his knowledge of Niall and Richard? Why the protection of Niall by Mulvo?

And Pat was wrong to set it up as he has… however accurate. The like of Neil would never understand Pat… because essentially systems men. I appreciate Buckley… he has my own integrity in his very being. He never deserved what Daly meted out… only because the system never got his spine… as he points out in his book. Though his episcopal status is a minus for me. The Order of Bishops! No such thing, in grounded theology.

I have always appreciated Pat Buckley although I do not share his views of errant clergy. Like his brother bishops, he is so unforgiving as they protect their own posteriors… because they did not have to give a shit before…

Mr Mulvihill, it is noteworthy that this is the second time in recent days you describe Neil Dargan as being one of the most honourable people you have ever known. I am intrigued by your reference to his “wholesome life now”. It irresistibly suggests that his life in the past has NOT been so wholesome. One wonders about his time at Mount St Joseph Abbey? And, to describe him as “as good a man as has ever lived” thou does protest too much, methinks.

Like

Stands to reason. If he was a priest in good standing in the past and now is not, his life is bound to be more wholesome now.

You’re just doing yer bit to restore the dignity and integrity of romanist priesthood, aren’t you? (Not that it ever had either, let alone both.😕)

By the by, you didn’t rid yourself of the habit of lying after all those years of holy romanist priesthhood. It tends to add grist to my mill about the true nature of it, so thanks for helping me emphasise the point.

Pat, it begs questions to be answered. Mr. Mulvihill and his take over of the blog with utter inanities and irrelevancies. Why tolerate this goon? Also, his defence of his friend Niall is questionable considering what’s been alleged about his friend in this blog. If true, his friend is not so honourable.

Mulvihill is a pseudo intellectual. I mean who uses the word ‘zeitgeist’? He’s renounced the priesthood, the church, his faith and apparently even his baptism yet spends all day on her attacking an institution which he claims has no power over him. He needs to find employment to fill his empty days – why doesn’t he try being a truck driver – apparently there is a shortage.

I respect Bishop Buckley… anyone who knows me would know I don’t throw idle bouquets. Fr. Paul Little ( R.I.P) wanted to throttle me across a table in the Irish College Rome a long time ago for my speaking up for Pat Buckley. Bishop Buckley ( as valid as any one of them) is an honorable and decent man, however mistaken about downtrodden clergy. I do not assent to his assault on what the Christian church deems “ sin”…. Crime is another category,.. but then that is what bishops do; Judge.

6.03: So – Mulvihill is a friend. We thought so. He still writes rubbish. No one debates with this man. His utterances are odious. Says nothing relevant and tries too hard to be a pseudo intellectual. He still hasn’t responded to the allegations about his “right honourable friend” and if Niall was a friend of a cleric, you’d be harassing that cleric and accusing him of being a co-abuser.

6.24: As much as I dislike Mary Mc ever since she left the presidency, the issues being discussed at this Synod are necessary, particularly on Women and Church Ministry and the many issues re: gay sexuality. The line-up of speakers is impressive and issues for discussion are very interesting. I hope this Synod will be a wake up call for our Church in discerning new, meaningful and Christ like ways of feeling we belong to God’s family and all who claim this must be afforded their dignity, right to participate and be included in all aspects of Church life. For too long we are waiting for this kind of impetus. Real change often comes about by such Spirit-inspired “people’s” power and voices. Despite Mc’ s presence, I give this Synod my prayers and best wishes.

Whilst I pretend to be shocked I fear it would be insincere. I knew Richard when he was in school, both in different secondary schools in Dublin 6. I remember he was a nice guy, I was amused at the time when my mates told me he had mitched religion class to go into the George. 30 years later little has changed. I ask people to remember that at times social media creates a very cruel witch hunt. Behind every scandal is a person with feelings and emotions. Everyone has family and pride.
