RICHARD, PAUL, LOLA AND MILLIE ON HOLIDAYS IN CORK.

Fr Paul, Lola and Millie.
Fr Richard

AS A SIGN OF THINGS RETURNING TO NORMAL the parish priest of Knock, Richard Gibbons, in on holiday in Cork with his best friend, Paul Bennett and Paul’s pooches, Lola and Millie.

LOLA AND MILLIE

Apparently, in the last few days they were able to take a boat trip out of Cobh to explore the second-largest natural harbour in the world and its nooks and crannies.

A couple of years ago Fr Bennett took a sabbatical from Cloyne diocese and unusually, spent it helping Fr Gibbons at Knock.

FAREWELL TO PAUL

THE OLDEN FUNERAL AT MELLERY

RIP

Yesterday the funeral of Monsignor Olden took place at Mount Melleray.

PHONSIE CELEBRATED
DICK PURCELL AND PHONSIE

DOM RICHARD PURCELL WAS ON THE ORGAN FOR THE FUNERAL.

Watching the funeral I observed two things:

1. That Purcell does not look like a man at peace with himself.

2. The body launguage between Purcell and Phonsie is the body language of close friends.

I thought the former nuncio, Charlie Browne, was Fr Dick’s best friend. Paul must have replaced him.
I never trusted Fr Dick ever since he claimed that Knock was packed with 45,000 pilgrims during the unsuccessful papal visit, when everyone viewing it on the tv could see that it was very far from being packed and the true number was more like 4,500.

Apart from ignoring the poor form of this newspaper in predicting appointments, other factors are to be considered.

If FM is the preferred candidate of the incumbent he won’t be appointed.

John Butler, Lord Dunboyne, bishop of Cork (1763) became an Anglican to further his career. There is a large portrait of him in Maynooth and Dunboyne House there is called after him.

Like

Actually not quite what you want, but Rene Vilatte started off RC and may have ended up an Anglican bishop. May have because his ecclesiastical wandering is sooo complex.
Hyacinth Loyson was a Carmelite priest who got excommunicated then started the Eglise Catholique Gallicane under the supervision of what is described as a bishop of the Church of Scotland (presumably the Episcopal Church of Scotland).
Arnold Mathew had also been a RC before being Old Catholic (not Utrecht Union).
Conclusion: RC bishops don’t tend to leave the denomination, but clergy are not immune to becoming bishops of other denominations.
Now if you were to ask if any RC bishops cover up crime, you’d be on to a winner.

Referring back to yesterday’s theme, Churches and religious people should keep their noses out of the sex lives and relationships of people. This is particularly the case for the RCC, which has made the sex lives and relationships of people its particular specialist subject, which is rather idiotic considering that the men (yes, they are all men) who are making these teachings and delving in to other people’s lives and telling them what to do or not to do, are celibate men who have not a clue about relationships and sex, except those abusive and secret relationships and sex that they indulge in contrary to their professed vows. The end result is that these frustrated, lying, conniving, dysfunctional men are the ones who are making judgements about other people ! It’s a nonsense.
Going further, I simply do not understand why sex has had such import invested in it, which in its turn has inflicted on people burdens of guilt. Except that it has been in the interests of clerics to do this, so that they can bolster their own authority and power. The time has come for people to take responsibility for their own emotional, physical and sexual lives and relationships and stop listening to these manipulative and lying clerics. Society does have a right to create some boundaries around sex and relationships – e.g laws of rape etc, age of consent etc. Again, it’s an irony that the very clerics who are telling us what to do and what not to do have been shown to be a class group that has contravened every law against the abuse of sexual power, particularly the rampant and pandemic sexual abuse of children and the vulnerable that we have seen uncovered over the last few decades. How dare these same clerics have the arrogance and presumption to lecture us about our sexual lives and relationships ?

10.05: There is nothing fatal about parishioners having the a ability to distinguish between their local priest and the institutional church. It’s only fatal when a priest professionally, but sickeningly manipulates the access to families and children for his own purposes, abuse. That’s fatal. Since the late 80’s when the abuse scandals broke and shocked, disgusted and angered all of us, particularly the cover up and the complete lack of transparency, the relationship between priest and people altered irrevocably, never to be the same again. Yet, those of us in the ground, out and about in our ministry and dedicated to our ministry, thankfully received much encouragement and support from parishioners. They, justly and rightly, saw their local priest at work for and among them. However, I understand why many individuals and families are careful and cautious about where and what they allow their children to be involved in. I will only have their involvement once a group of parents are part of arrangements and supervision. In almost 43 years of ministry, I have never worked with any priest or in any parish where a priest was accused of abuse. In the two occasions of having to report suspected abuse, it was respected lay people who were the perpetrators, both removed immediately and subjected to court proceedings. It is a gross distortion to even suggest that priests are wolves in sheep’s clothing. It’s the grand lie and one that’s peddled here all too frequently. I may fail in areas of ministry and priesthood but to infer that “priests” in general are abusers is both vile and evil and morally repugnant. Truth matters and helps justice and healing. Lies destroy.

Clergy (your a good example) fail to understand or appreciate that the clerical child abuse and cover up scandal has decimated, terminally destroyed your reputation as moral or ethical agents or arbiters – of course you roll out tried and tested canards which you repeat to yourself to console yourself that it ain’t so bad (your example highlighted this – yoi say you’ve never worked with an abusing priest (how do you know?) and you point to two lay abusers etc.
All by the playbook revealing the depth of your defensiveness – if you truly understood you’d be content to be accused of being a Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, an Angel of Darkness Masquerading as an Angel of Light and suck up the view that the priest is the Institution as the price decent clergy will have to pay for years and years to come, if not forever.
The gravy train of public acclamation and esteem are well and truly over – it’s in the Zeitgeist most people in society and the church perceive EVERY RC priest to be a potential sexual predator, a menace and a real and present danger to children and young men – my advice, suck it up and get real, it’s called suffering for the gospel but you don’t like that you squeal like a little piggie all the way home.

It is fallacious in its logic, if any. In fact very often I have admitted to the negative and destructive effect which sexual abuse by clergy has had on the perception by many of Church and priesthood. I am under no illusions and that’s why I said the nature of relationships between priest and people have changed irrevocably. TRUST had to be earned. When I said I have never worked with an abusing priest, that’s 100% true and not one of those men has ever had any allegations against them. For me many of them were exemplary men and in my early years taught me much that stands to me this day. This is not to deny I know “of” priests who abused and are now no longer in ministry, some are in prison. Your type of ignorant slur and verbiage will certainly ensure the survival of the big lie that we are all potential abusers. Surely, you know that such an attitude is gravely wrong and sinful. Suffering for the gospel Isn’t about sucking up lies and deliberate falsities. Believe me, I know what suffering for the gospel should mean. May I respectfully suggest that you reread my original ccomment and you’ll discern that It’s written with great clarity and that it is well balanced, honest and fair.

In that photo of the pilgrimage to Rome you can count the number of men on one hand. Women, mostly of a certain age, massively outnumber the men.

That pattern is repeated throughout the Church, where diocesan gatherings and workshops, synods and discussions are like a meeting of the WI or the Catholic Mothers Union. Why does the Novus Ordo find it so hard to attract men? The demographic at TLMs is much more representative.

Cardinal Heenan, when he saw the first Novus Ordo celebrated in the Matilda Chapel in the Vatican observed that if they did this in England the congregations would soon consist only of women and children. How far-sighted he was, except now we don’t even have the children.

Pat’s crozier, like all croziers, has a sharp pointed tip. Shepherd’s hooks do too. The point of the point is to demonstrate that an important episcopal duty is to guard the sheep from wolves. For too long, bishops forget the point, and have seen themselves as warm, pastoral, inoffensive types, and let the flock be ravaged by the Fr Brendan Smyth’s of this world.
It was only media attention and the courts that wakened bishops from their slumber and forced them into half-hearted responses to abuse. Pat keeps them on the boil.
Pat also exposes the rank hypocrisy of, one the one hand, blasting gay people and refusing them marriage, while the clergy go on like they are in a 70s San Francisco bathhouse, openly gay sems get ordained, and the pink palace of Maynooth was only marginally reformed by Pat’s single-handed exposure of the summer of love/summer of shame.

There is a very good reason that people would query the morals and integrity of any priest (in fact member) of the Roman Catholic church and it’s not the common perception that all priests are child abusers.
It is that on a policy level and internationally the church covered this up, facilitated abuse and crime, moved priests across borders, ignored complaints, forced people to be further traumatized by dealing with the courts, denied there was a problem, refused to introduce proper safeguarding, refused to deal with external agencies, has only taken sensible action when forced to, and even this year didn’t even bother to acknowledge a letter from the United Nations, and then has the gall to call itself holy and try to tell other people what their morals should be.
If you can belong to or support this and expect not to be treated with at least suspicion there is something wrong with you.
Can a reasonable person of good will and morals belong to this and not think there is a problem? No.

For 4.31 and 6.07: I cannot disagree with much of your assessment in response to my comment at 2.49. My complaint is not about the truth of your analysis, however crudely and hurrfully expressed, but more the sense of gleeful delight revealed that as priests we deserve to be slaughtered, almost annihilated, disappeared. It seems very wrong that any of us should steamroll over any group or individual who is down on the ground almost because of the crimes committed by clerics and Church acquiescence, cover up and adversarial court proceedings. All of that shames me. That even one person should have been abused is egregious and repulsive. Somehow, despite my own sense of dedication to what the ideal of priesthood is and my efforts at seeking after all that is right, honourable and acceptable to God, I will not ever have any acceptance on this blog by many. Surely, respect is essential in this debate, not hate sentiments or personalised abuse.

Like

Thank you for saying you are shamed. You have to understand that when you say ‘respect is essential in this debate’ and ‘the ideal of priesthood’ because of the recent history many, many, people do not hear what you think you are saying.
It is for you, not anyone else, to think of a Christian response to this divergence which has been caused by your colleagues.
What people hear, whether you like it or not is
1. You think there is a debate to be had. There isn’t. The church needs to shut up and listen for a change.
2. You expect respect despite the horrendous history of torture facilitated by the church you represent. Personally, I couldn’t represent that church. If you choose to represent that church you need to understand the implications.
3. You think that there is an ideal of priesthood – other people hear this as you maintaining your position of privilege. You have to understand that that privilege has been destroyed by your church permanently and you need to proceed differently.
RCs also generally don’t understand how peculiar their religion looks to outsiders – the eating Jesus, telling a priest your sins, bits of saints’ dead bodies and so on, being examples that spring to mind.
Your colleagues have frankly failed to come up with any new theological solutions to this situation and have naturally reverted to the existing theologies such as martyrdom and persecution, even crucifixion. These don’t sit well when your church has committed torture.
I am going into this detail because it seems like you are actually in a place to listen.

Why the purple prose @7.24pm ? You write in a highly-strung, laboured style which is hard to read.

Bishop High Gilbert this week turned down the Archdioceses of Glasgow his reason being is he in 70 in March 2022 and 75 in March 2027 and that year 2027 he hope to be returning back to his Spiritual Home Fort Augustus.
It seems Cardinal Marc Ouellet is looking at Toal or Nolan at least Toal is active Nolan is a damp squib

It was a total error on my part I was thinking about the horrendous cover up’s at Fort Augustus
It was meant to be Pluscarden Abbey where was Abbot from 1992 till ordained Bishop of Aberdeen 15th August 2011.
Bishop Hugh has been asked to reconsider Glasgow.

Bishop Gilbert wouldn’t want anything to do the disaster that is Glasgow no matter what age he is. The surprise is he hopes to return to the scandalous Fort Augustus which has been in the news recently with the usual abuse scandals that the Benedictines are infamous for. As for Toal and Nolan one’s worse than the other, but we’ll take the ould gossips word for it. That eejit Ouellet won’t act without taking the advice of Jim S.

Like

He probably would actually because the monastery (unsurprisingly) closed 20+ years ago and is now luxury flats! Better than Pluscarden any day!

I thought I would have seen you all out on the Pride march today it was Fabulous.
Sadly only the Scottish Episcopalian had the gut with a banner saying the Scottish Episcopalians welcome you by Canon Kevin.
Cardinal Mark and Archbishop Gugerotti would not act on Jim S advice they are consulting the Faithful of Glasgow and ask that anyone with any views should email them to.

Bella is ignorant and has a few things in common with Jim S: both are barely literate.
Imagine the travesty of someone like him taking the great Robert Bellarmine as his namesake. The sainted Jesuit had a particular devotion to the Roman pontiff – and in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that required a superhuman act of faith.
Bellarmine – Bella: O tempora, o mores.

Holiday for a month you say, mmmmm winding the clock down. They have probably gone to France, that is their usual haunt. Those two don’t give two flying fucks about the parishioners, it’s ALL about them and what THEY want. Well if this forthcoming year out doesn’t come good, then there is little chance of Bishop Declan finding them another four parishes to manage and another home for them to share together. Bloody disgraceful the way they have treated their parishioners, the minute they don’t get what THEY want, they decide to fuck off!

Like

If their parishoners are anything like you they are well out of it. They are wiping the dust from under their feet and leaving Clifton. It is not yet known if they are being replaced. Under Declan Lang’s uninspiring 1970s-era leadership, Clifton has no sems, while neighbouring Portsmouth has 11. Perhaps Philip Egan can lend him some.

The trouble with sodalities and their covenants is:
1 – They are solely about “behaviour” inducing.
2 – They start by promising they will be less intense than ordinary religion but very soon are far more intense.
3 – Always refuse to act as public confessor to others. Don’t feel sorry for others who appear to be in the same boat as you – it’s not a true favour to them.
4 – They have no postulancy, and one never becomes a full member.
5 – Superiors and their chain of subordination (they are above archbishops in power) never get effectively identified.
6 – Statutes needn’t bear any relation to actuality.
7 – Stated raison d’etre (if any) is completely meaningless and often shifts anyway (sometimes one is there as someone’s “armada”, sometimes one is there to learn about “faith”, etc).
8 – Never volunteer for anything whatever as the brownie points you will be awarded are worthless.
Always impose your concept more strongly than the leaders’, and always walk out – noisily – after 4 (four) years max.
