The President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, was invited to a church service in Northern Ireland to celebrate the PARTITION of Ireland and the SETTING UP of NORTHERN IRELAND.
Thats like asking the president of Israel to attend a service celebrating the anniversary of the establishment of Auschwitz.
Or asking a Balkan president to attend a church service to celebrate the establishment of ethnic cleansing.
The partition of Ireland, by the British, was the final blow in Britain’s 800 years of invasion and colonisation of Ireland.
No self-respecting Irish person should be happy with this invasion and colonisation achieved generally by barbaric means.
Certainly, an Irish president should ever attend such a ceremony.
PRESIDENT’S PROPER TITLE
When the organisers of this badly named church service wrote to President Higgins, calling him the PRESIDENT OF IRELAND.
The DUP then deliberately called him THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND.
That is not President Higgins title. He is simple the PRESIDENT OF IRELAND.
In talking to him as they did the DUP deliberately tried to say that he had no role to play in Northern Ireland.
I am an Irish citizen living in Northern Ireland for 43 years.
I regard President Higgins as my president.
Currently in International Law Northern Ireland is part of the UK.
I would never attempt to insult Queen Elizabeth or indeed the UK flag or national anthem.
But we cannot ignore our history and eventually there must be a resolution on the island to the historic problem.

Pat: one correction: President Higgins issued a statement clarifying that the Organisers referred to him – as they always have done – as President of Ireland. He said others, the DUP referred to him as President of the Republic of Ireland. This is important. On reflection, I am saddened that he chose not to attend and sadly he contributed to the controversy himself. I believe there is great merit in praying together ecumenically for HOPE. Too many politicians have used this occasion for personal agendas. Your analogies at beginning of your comments are absurd. I also think Archbishop Martin should have just accepted the President’s decision not to attend without using “unexpected”. The organisers are well intentioned. Let’s not debase their motivations. I have worries about the possibility for unity, healing and peace in our country. This is a most unfortunate controversy.

This post on President Michael D. is a gem. Your comparison with the President of Israel being invited to celebrate the opening of Auschwitz is a clever analogy which makes an eloquent point. I too agree that our President is right to decline the invitation.

Well done President Higgins. Thank God that Michael D is our president at this time of the decade of centenaries, rather than Mary Mc Aleese. She would have attended this event without any doubt. Michael D spent six months deliberating on it before declining the invite. That shows that he is not insulting anyone; instead he gave serious consideration to it and obviously looked at it from every angle. He is a credit to our country. He has culture, he speaks well and is a wonderful ambassador of Ireland. As a priest, I am so disappointed that Archbishop Martin is involved in commemorating the partition of our country.

Dear Pat, just so you know, mr Higgins stated that the invitation had addressed him as ‘President of the Rep. Of Ireland ‘, which he is. He them had to roll back on that, as the invitation did not address him as that: the line now is the DUP have at times referred to him as the president of the republic of Ireland (which he is) (Irish Times interview on Thursday last) He is just being rude for the sake of being rude.

My own?
President Higgins has acted supremely correctly, courteously and entirely appropriately.
To “celebrate” the gerrymandered division of a small nation along religious lines was ill conceived, wrong, and ultimately is destined to fail.
I say this while fully acknowledging the perspectives of Unionists aligned to the UK.
But acknowledgement does not imply acceptance that the status quo must persist indefinitely.
There needs to be respectful accommodation of all our religious and cultural identities.
And there is a parallel here with the various branches of theistic belief organisations, especially the Christian ones.

MMM the service wasn’t dubbed a celebration but to mark an historic event.
Part of it could have included repentence for the wrongs on all sides in the creation of NI and the subsequent history, including the gerrymandering, discrimination and state brutality, and the IRA terrorism as well. It could have been a moment of reconciliation but Higgins threw a metaphorical hand grenade into it, stirred up another row and confirmed unionist fears that they would be barely tolerated guests in any united Ireland.

Regrettably, the President has added to the sense among Unionists that the Irish don’t really care about them. It’s a very divisive issue caused as much by the President as the politicians. One of the most disgraceful (in fact murderous) examples is the Mother Superior of Tyburn and Catholic Truth Scotland suggesting to people that the vaccine is more dangerous than the virus. President Higgins is a highly intelligent and compassionate man of principle, who has dedicated himself for many years to the cause of peace, reconciliation and a shared home for all on this island. He was completely right not to decline to attend.
I remember a few years ago Fr. Eugene O’Neill taking to the media to say that the seminarians at that time did not support reunification and the uproar it caused among the seminarians. The Roman Church is and always has been in the pocket of the British state, it always will be.
So well done to Uachtarán na hÉireann for his principled stance, the ever increasing majority support his decision even if loyalism and Romanism don’t.

We can all recount endless stories of how we experienced the troubles. President Higgins could never be compared to the narrow minded bigoted DUP. Partition is a failed project that brought us B Specials, RUC/UDR collusion in the murder of Catholics, no civil rights in the past, no jobs, no vote, no housing for Catholics. British State executions, torture, internment, the list goes on. Why on earth would anyone want to celebrate all of that in a religious service is beyond me. Maybe the should invite the relatives of the late Lord Brookeborough instead who once said he didn’t want to see a Catholic about the place.

Pope Francis and Archbishop Cushley speak regularly however Archbishop Cushley was over at Scots College and had a personal audience with Pope Francis.

People in loyal towns such as Larne will acknowledge that there is such a thing as the island of Ireland, but they won’t accept that champagne socialist/student landlord Higgins has any jurisdiction over Northern Ireland, so any insistence on the title President of Ireland harks back to the territorial claim over Northern Ireland that was dropped from the Irish constitution.

I have to tell you that as a Brit I simply do not think of Northern Irelanders as British. They are first and foremost Northern Irish, or Irish, but certainly not British. We would be glad to be rid of them. Most NI people, especially the DUP Protestant types, are just trouble. Ireland is one island and had been for centuries, so it should be a single country. It will be one day. In the meantime, Higgins is quite right not to go and help the NI Protestants feel good about themselves for having lived in a fabricated, dysfunctional state for the last 100 years, where they engineered the oppression of anybody who was not of their frame of mind. Frankly, Unionist Northern Irelanders are just ridiculous. We laugh at them from this side of the Irish Sea. We long to see them off our hands. They have caused much grief and bloodshed, and they continue to cost us a lot of money.

You are right 12:33 – England is heading for some difficult times. You already see in most cities that the population is increasingly Asian, predominantly of Pakistani Muslim origin, and they simply are not interested in integrating that much, and prefer their own ways. In to the bargain, they have more children than any other section of society, and it does not take long for a couple of generations to grow exponentially. The Muslim religion is an aggressive and crusading one, and no matter how much they might deny it, every Muslim believes that everybody else should be a Muslim or is outside salvation or acceptance. I am surprised that we have sleep walked in to such a situation and various governments have just let it happen. It is going to be one of the biggest changes to British society ever, and it has happened in 30 years. A British Caliphate is not an exaggeration.

Obviously it’s not to do with Higgins’ title, nor how much some GB or Ireland people think northern Ireland “protestants” or “catholics” “aren’t British”. The six counties got what the whole of Ireland wanted up to 1914. Not prosecuting the black & tans was a very bad “non-move”.
As for the shootings of children at home in 1969, and deliberate state backing for certain terror factions, it is not the footsoldiers that need prosecuting, it’s the very senior officers and overall commanders, some of whom are still about, together with the successors in office continuing to “legitimise” those actions.
Despite the (more or less irrelevant) very minor muddle over titles there’s no harm in declining an invite to this birthday of the worst possible mess.
Eamon should stop trying to be chaplain to the establishment and the establishment should stop leaning on religious personnel or parishioners to “legitimise” them and the same goes in every country. Bring back agnosticism.
Let people choose prayer and belief in privacy without being lumbered with political overtones by prelates OR politicians. My family for instance never wanted to join a “gang” and neither did those Irish who married in with us. Merging gangs makes the situation worse not better.

I find President Higgins to be endearing and he has a nice way with words when he speaks. A nice change from all the rash sounds the media exposes us to. I think he did the right thing in declining this invitation, which was his right to do. I don’t think any obligation exists to consult the government on matters of this sort. Anyways, with the pledge of the world redeemed as our Christian focus, maybe a celebration of inclusivity, unity and peace would have been a better way to go. “Unum corpus et unus spiritus inveniamur in Christo”

I listened to Eamonn Martin on RTE radio at 13.00 . His revisionism, in the context of what I blogged on Friday, is commendable. His tone and content was more akin to O Fiaich scholarship than comes naturally to him. However, he is worthy of compliment for the historical sensitivities he is now clearly reflective of…. Prayer should never be used to mask atrocity. The event should simply be cancelled under its present word format.

Captain Nairac and his family (his parents are dead) this modicum of dignity would be a sign of hope and humanity.
I find the very mention of Robert Nairac brings out the Tumbleweed and Silence the Stern Reply.
Which is odd because he was aCatholic and begged to see a priest before he died – this dignity, of course, was denied.
And even his murderers said he was a brave and courageous soldier.
I knew his parents and the pain of their loss haunts me.
The return of his remains would be an answer to prayer.

4.43: Thank you for that posting. Having been trained for 7 years in the 70’s and getting through college and seminary unscathed by any sexual abuse of any kind and never witnessing any untoward or suspicious behaviour by any staff or students, I am absolutely shocked – not unsurprisingly though – at the revelations in this video. There was a particular staff member who seemed to have an eye for particular types but such was the code of discipline between staff and students and between junior and senior students, that we were forever conscious of transgressing boundaries and the punishment that ciuld be meted out. I’m sure boundaries were crossed over the years but personally I didn’t witness any obvious wrongful, abusive approaches. Considering what’s unfolded in the Church worldwide in the past 25 years and of more recent years with the tsunami of reports and the gaze of the world upon the Church leadership, it is incomprehensible that any prelate or seminary formator would attempt to infringe personal boundaries of any kind for sexual gratification or that they would act in such a vile, reckless and criminal way. Do these present men – wolves in sheep’s clothing – not get it? All who are mentioned should face the courts of the land for this behaviour and abuse. They should all be laicised and salaries removed. I don’t believe in vindictiveness or vengeance but wrong is wrong and abuse is abuse. The behaviour of those mentioned – and others – is unequivocally, morally reprehensible. Pope Francis must act.
