FATHER FLANNERY NOT ALLOWED TO CELEBRATE HIS SISTERS FUNERAL šŸ˜Ŗ

Tony Flannery

Father Flannery’s sister Geraldine died earlier this month.

Geraldine RIP

He asked Michael Neary, the RC archbishop of Tuam for permission to celebrate the funeral and did not receive it.

Michael Neary šŸ˜‰

So he celebrated the funeral in the sun room in Geraldine’s home.

It was recorded and placed on Youtube.

By all accounts, Geraldine was a wonderful, open and positive person. She entered a convent as a young woman, became a teacher and later left the convent to be a practitioner of Chinese Medicine in Tuam.

I was very impressed and touched by Father Tony’s celebration of the Funeral Mass and homily.

WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?

Would Jesus have refused to allow Father Tony to celebrate the Funeral Mass.

Absolutely not.

The decision not to allow him to celebrate the funeral was un-Christ-like and unChristian.

It’s what happens when people put man-made canon law before the teachings of Jesus.

MY NEPHEW’S FUNERAL:

Tragically, my nephew took his own life in 1997.

I was refused the use of a Catholic Church in Dublin by Desmond Connell – even though it was 1997 and I was not a bishop and not “excommunicated”.

Thankfully the wonderful Christians at Dublin’s Unitarian Church came to my aid and we had the funeral there.

When a family has a priest member it is very important to the grieving family that their family priest celebrates the funeral.

Over the last 35 years I have found many ways and buildings to celebrate marriages, finerals and baptisms – the churches of other denominations, hotels, castles, the open air etc.

We need to tell these hierarchical and clerical bullies where to stuff themselves and their buildings šŸ’

As someone who has always had a regard for M.J. Neary since he taught me in Maynooth I am disgusted at this decision of his. What is Tony Flanneryā€™s crime? That he supports the ordination of women? Maybe MJN is too uncritical of the Vaticanā€™s role in this saga. Can it be that he wants a few more years before a successor is appointed? I would hope not. Very sad.

The bishop has a heart of stone and no compassion. Jesus would weep at his attitude. Anyhow his sister had a lovely mass despite the bishopā€™s lack of charity.

Yvonne welcome back.
A simple Question would you agree to Father Ger coming back to say Holy Mass for their Funeral.
Bishop Fintan in the eyes of this blog must be as bad as Archbishop Neary and not allowing Father Ger to offer Holy Mass.
However you cannot have a rule for one and not the other.

@8:49: Please explain why you have used feminine terms to describe a male person.
If it is intended to disrespect the individual please explain how this will be achieved.
My view of the blog matter is that the bishop showed no sympathy, compassion nor common decency in the matter. That appears to be a common trait in the RC hierarchy.

Indeed@ 5.43 I’ve noted +Pat ‘s obstinate refusal to acquiesce to numerous requests by blocking these infantile effeminising posts.
+Pat’s obstinacy, when challenging abusive authority, is courageous and commendable. However that personality trait can be much misguided in refusing to accept certain other balanced intelligent objective viewpoints. I think, that as best explanation, he has said such effeminate language is common parlance among RCC clergy. I have thought he would more likely wish to disassociate himself from ALL their unacceptable practices.
Maybe I just have to accept my assessment to be wrong.šŸ˜Ŗ

I’m not up to date with the status of Fr Flannery, or what restrictions he is under, although I know it is not to do with safeguarding issues, more to do with orthodoxy / theological matters. I am astounded that this bishop did not even reply to him in a time of personal grief, and astounded also that he did not extend a compassionate and caring hand to Fr Flannery. Even a response, even in the negative, would have at least indicated that he had considered the matter. What would have been better would have been to let him carry on with celebrating his sister’s funeral. In the event, Fr Flannery seems to have found a way around it, a way which sidestepped the official Church and bishop. I think there is a lesson in that, especially for the Church and bishop – namely, that we will not continue to put up with this kind of nonsense from them, and will not allow them to treat us as though we are vassals. They need to realise that the Church does not have the hold over people as it did in the past and people, whilst being respectful, will make up their own minds in conscience and do what they think is right, not what they are told to do by a Church, bishops and priests who have consistently shown themselves to be lacking in transparency and integrity. I would take careful note of that, dear Fathers and Bishops ! The sands are shifting under your feet, and you don’t seem to realise it. Until you fall in to a big void of a hole where you will suddenly realise that you are nothing. There is nothing as ex as ex…..

And then bishop Neary wonders why there are no vocations.

This decision also raises the question of what effect all those years of saying his prayers have had on the bishop and anyone who knows him knows he is devoted to his prayers. Iā€™m sure they glorified God but it doesnā€™t look much like it that they sanctified much the one praying.

If he didnā€™t reply to Fr Flannery that indeed is a breach of courtesy as well.

To use a phrase coined by Bishop Neary a long time ago now, as far as Fr Flannery was concerned the bishop was ā€œnailing him to his negative experience.ā€ When the bishop first used that phrase I doubt he imagined it would come back to bite him in the arse.

NEARY’S LETTER TO TONY FLANNERY

Archbishopā€™s House,
Tuam, Co. Galway
Telephone: (093) 24166
Fax: (093) 28070. 16 SEPTEMBER, 2021

Dear Fr. Tony

I was very sorry to hear of Geraldineā€™s death at the end of August, and I write now to offer my sincere sympathy and the support of my prayers to you, Frank, Marguerite, and the extended family.

Geraldine and I met on many occasions over the years ā€“ usually after the 10.30 a.m. Sunday Mass in the Cathedral. However, I knew of her for many years before I got to meet her in person. Her reputation in religious life as a very fine teacher, a Sister to whom her students instinctively warmed, and someone who easily won the trust of students, parents and teaching colleagues, was already well established. Later, she used these fine personal qualities to great effect in her healing work as a lay person. Hers was a holistic approach to healing, and there are many who attribute their current good health to Geraldineā€™s skilful interventions.
You may be aware that I was away on annual leave when Geraldine died. My normal practice is to visit bereaved families in the parish at the time of the funeral and to sympathise in person. When this is not possible, I write a note to sympathise with and support the bereaved family. I am sorry for the delay in this instance, and I am grateful for your reminder.
Please be assured of my prayers for Geraldineā€™s happy repose, and for you, Frank and Marguerite as you carry the heavy cross of grief.
With every good wish and the Lordā€™s blessing,

Yours sincerely,

+Michael Neary Archbishop of Tuam

Yet again, you have used a controversy and someone’s grief in a very selfish manner, primarily to gain traction against the Bishop. We may very well question the unkindness of the Bishop, but intruding into a famimy’s grief so soon and possibly without permission is an egregious insult and totally unwarranted. Fr. Flannery diesn’t need you to speak for him. Fr. Tony speaks eloquently, intelligently and rationally about his own issues and life situation. His human decency is obvious and though he is hurt, he is not overtaken by vengeance or vindictiveness of any kind. For me, his heart and mind are truly of Christ and I am disgusted that you find it necessary to use his grief to evoke anti Church and anti Bishop narratives. I know Fr. Tony very well and I have no doubt he will be unwelcoming of your intrusion.

Was there a reason why Fr. Tony used the mass which ceaed to be late in 2010. Was it a case that he was giving the church a kick in the teeth for it giving him one. I am sure had he not a current missal himself, someone would have had one that he could have borrowed. They are not very expensive and can be got in all good book shops.

Iā€™m sure there was a reason. The process which produced the new translation has been shown to be hugely flawed. There are more than 10,000 changes which had not been approved by the church. And whatā€™s more, the discredited instruction ā€˜Liturgiam authenticamā€™ which produced the new missal has been unceremoniously shelved by Pope Francis.

And, in fact, the new missal came into effect, in Advent 2011.

I donā€™t know whatā€™s the problem between o flannery and Bishop.

Its very sad and also indictment on Neary whose heart was full of stone. That says it all about him and rcc as well. and

The rcc legalese which bars flannery from entering it. No compassion at all so whatsoever.

His letter to cssr priest doesnā€™t excuse him at all cos he has to be consistent that his actions matches his words which doesnā€™t ā€“ bar o flannery from entering the rcc and also wrote to him expressing condolences.
It doesnā€™t wash with me or some people or others. Consistent is the key.

Its sickening un Christian attitude coming from rcc big wigs like neary and other Bishops who supported nearyā€™s move.

This is the reason we as people donā€™t listen to bishops on power ego trips, whose heart full of stone, no compassion at all whatsoever.

Can it be said for every Bishop in IrelandšŸ¤”šŸ¤”. If anything such as this incident re o flannery sister as it set an example to all of us that bishops are cold hearted, full of rcc legalese, obessesed with assets, arrogance, power trips, not christ like.

Neary attitude was the finest example of how rcc views us ā€“ ourselves as outsiders, those with no voice at all like myself disabilities community et al.

The only that matters to them as bishops is power, money and sheer arrogance of ā€˜them and usā€™ attitude.

Rcc Ireland is gone and how long will that be? 20 or 30 years who knows?

Rcc is like an emperor with no clothes, all naked for everyone to see re their cover ups, arrogance, full of legelese barring o flannery, no belief, double lives, huge mansions, out of touch with the realities of the lives of many ordinary people out there.

That is not what jesus intended them to be. They created as they intended to be as opposed to jesus intentions.

How do we know the Archbishop said NO when the Archbishopā€™s letter said he was on Annual Leave was it the Vicar general that said no in the Archbishops absence.

Fr Tony Flannery has been barred from all public ministry by the Holy See. Even if Archbishop Neary wanted to allow him to say Mass in the Cathedral, that is not within his power to grant. It would require the CDF to allow it. Most of you fail to recognise that none of this is the Churchā€™s fault, the problem lies squarely with Fr Flannery. He is the one who chose to distance himself from the Church. He is the one who chose to be disobedient. He has been presented with numerous avenues of reconciliation by the CDF, but has personally and deliberately chosen not to engage with them.
While it is unfortunate that Ms. Flanneryā€™s request for her brother to preside at her funeral Mass at the Cathedral could not be granted, it is important to note that nobody has the right to insist that a particular cleric preside at any liturgy of the Church. This is particularly pertinent when the requested cleric has had his faculties removed and is suspended from all public ministry.

Like

@11.35 youā€™re behind the timesā€¦. All candidates for Holy Orders are now required to swear the Oath of Fidelity and make the Profession of Faith. Subsumed within this is the magisterial teaching that women cannot be admitted to Holy Orders, which is to be held to be divinely revealed and ā€œwith full religious submission of will and intellectā€.
The sarcastic and bitter tone of your comment makes me think youā€™re a cleric from the dark years of the 1970s and 1980s. Get with the times grandad!

Like

The first mistake is the first word of your sentence: ā€œSubsumed…..ā€ Says who? You might like to think so. But your likes and dislikes do not figure in evaluating this sentence.
Your second mistake is you fail to take into account that an expression of church teaching is only as authoritative as the reception by Christā€™s faithful, of that formulation. In this instance, that has not been forthcoming so your reasoning collapses.
Thirdly, if as you claim, it is to be taken as divinely revealed, that women cannot be admitted to Holy Orders, Pope Francis would not have set up a commission to examine the issue of women and the diaconate., So hereā€™s what you have to contend with: Pope Francis has set it up. If the answer had been a foregone conclusion, there would have been no commission. But there was. And there is.
Iā€™d recommended you arrange for an implant of your critical faculties, formerly removed.
