Incidentially, Ciaran Bagchus, is from a lovely and good Larne family.

Dear Damian, Will, Ciaran and Mark,

It is interesting for me, as a priest for 45 years and a bishop for the last 23 years, to look at the four of you starting out on the road.

I was where you are 51 years ago.

But in 1970 I was entering a very different church. Priests and seminarians were a plenty.

I was in Holy Cross, Clonliffe, Dublin and there were 120 of us for the one diocese of Dublin.

You are 4 for the 26 dioceses of Ireland and it will be a great exception if all of you make it to ordination.

I would expect 1 of you to be ordained and maybe none of you.

You are starting to prepare to enter one of the most dysfunctional bodied in the world – the Roman Catholic priesthood.

You are also preparing to be an office holder in one if the world’s most corrupt organisations.

The priesthood is now a gay profession and I would expect that most, if not all of you are gay.

And there is nothing wrong with being gay. And there is nothing wrong with being a gay priest.

The RCC will insist that you all take a solelm promise of celibacy.

Please dont take that if you do not intend to try and be faithful to it.

Most of the priests in Ireland today are gay, and many of them actively gay.

Some of them are to be found in gay saunas. Others are seeking gay sex at truck stops. Others are attending gay orgies. Others are having sex with other priests and seminarians. Others are seducing male parishioners.

The last thing we need at the moment is one, two, three or four more of these priests. They are destroying the Church’s reputation and the faith if the laity.

You are now living in a hotbed of homosexuality.

It will be unusual if you are not propositioned by a priest or fellow seminarian.

And if you are not propositioned it will mean that your predators do not find you physically attractive enough.

It won’t be because they don’t want to cause you spiritual, emotional, psychological or moral harm.

As you progress in Maynooth keep the words of the St Peter at tge forefront of your mind:

“Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walketh about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour”. (1 Peter 5:8)

Damian, Will, Ciaran and Mark, only proceed to ordination if you are passionate about God and being servants of His people and if you are determined to purify the prirsthood and church.

And if you try to that – be assured they will crucify you!

Once great Catholic Ireland reduced to four seminarians. I wish them well, and I will
pray for them. Bishop Pat has given them some wise words to reflect on. The RCC priesthood is broken, rotten, dysfunctional and this must be acknowledged ifit is to heal. Maybe these four are the future, will persevere and triumph. They certainly need our prayers.

They have managed to have twice the number of new seminarians as the SSPX has for Ireland. Absolute winners. Great achievement! It might be noted the tiny SSPX get roughly 50 new seminarians a year.
Maynooth should be closed (perhaps closed and reopened with a completely new staff if possible, also exorcised given the restful ghost its said to have, or the demons it has in recent decades). At least Ledwith didn’t become Abp of Dublin. Even where an ordinary is bad or mediocre, there can always be worse. While All Hallows (although I heard one priest say it ‘went mad’ after the New Pentecost) or St Peter’s College (Sean Fortune was a product) or Clonliffe might have had their problems, they cannot have been worse than that place. Maybe allow which US seminary has done well to open a branch in Ireland. Given the numbers, all they’d need is one end of a class room.

@10.58am Clearly, you know nothing of Fr Murphy’s high intellectual abilities and profound pastoral sensitivities. He is a fine choice for the work to which he has been assigned. There was no lobbying on his behalf. He joins Archbishop Roche, himself a wonderful leader of a department that is at the forefront of the Vatican’s holy mission.

Saddly did’t take long for Miss Tasteless to come on with her fables, how do you know what Patsy did with any vestments. Unless he confirms what you say I don’t believe you, and if he donated anything to the SSPX he would have been thanked. Sadly to use your favorite word “SADLY”, which you constantly use having a very small vocabulary, good vestments are used for the greater glory of God something you would KNOW nothing about. St Jean Mary Vianney who lived very frugally insisted on only the best vestments when he celebrated Te Holy Sacrifce of The Mass and they weren’t polyester. AMDG!

“Proud” to be a Roman Catholic although I hate the clerical abuse and will use every breathe in my body to get them out the Sacred Priesthood as they are not welcome in Our Church.
Clergy leading double standards and not obeying Canon Law will also be asked to leave.
Bishops and Papal Nuncio’s must be informed of what is happening in the vineyard.
Please be rest assured every letter or email that a Papal Nuncio receives goes straight into the Papal pouch. (btw I was in Park Side) and what class it is but needing sold off.
Thankfully i am with an organisation administered by the Supreme Pontiff and not an organisation run by a Priest but no doubt they will raise him to the rank of Archbishop but just now he is a Administrator Priest in the FSSPX

There were 86 of us in my first year class in Maynooth, and all the other Irish seminaries (Clonliffe, Carlow, Thurles, Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny, Belfast and the Irish College, Rome) were all still open and admitting their own first years. The ordination class in Maynooth was bigger than the entire seminary community today.
Amy and co should resign for allowing it to come to this.

I think being a priest must be an incredibly lonely life. It goes against what society views as normal. No wonder many turn to alcohol or worse. Perhaps as the priesthood dwindles in Ireland priests may be able to live in community, in priories, going out on Sunday to various Mass centres.

Hope and the heart says – they love God, the Church and people and want to serve the gospel.

Hope and the head says – they joined because they are gay, are attracted to dressing up, being the centre of attention and are easily corrupted and lead astray. Money on they all leave before ordination.

+ Pat, your “open letter” to the four new seminarians in Maynooth is cathartic. Yes, when you joined there were lots of vocations, but how many of these vocations were authentic? Did these men enter the seminary in droves because Ireland was poor and it was better option than going on the boat to England or to the United States? Did they join the seminary to answer the prayers of their mother? At the same time, many of these priests have served the church as best they could and faithful to the priestly vows.

There is deep dysfunction within certain parts of the church at the moment. Sadly, things are very bad in Ireland, but that does not come as a surprise. Let us be honest the men that have led the Irish church over the past five decades (apart from the odd honourable exception) have been disasters.

You were instrumental in highlighting the entrenched gay subculture in Maynooth; it has not changed. It is incredulous that a Deacon who was alleged to have been active on Grindr was ordained a priest having sworn a statement refuting those allegations. That is totally unacceptable. The deacon continues to maintain a low profile in his own diocese as his rarely seen or heard. Repeatedly it has been highlighted on this blog that a deacon from Northern Ireland had consensual gay sex on an altar with a deceased priest from Cork. In any other denomination this would be a scandal and have caused outrage. In Ireland, it is swept under the carpet and covered-up. These clerics were “formed” in Maynooth, so in my view of the world these four men should now leave Maynooth while their integrity is still intact.

Why are we so discouraging towards these men? It is sad that Pat should print this letter because it is written by someine who is not nor ever will be a model priest. The advice given might be useful but the the tone of the letter is so discouraging. These young men have thought seriously about this decision. In time they may discern differently. For now they need our prayers and encouragement. Good words of encouragement can go a long long way but the tone of this supposed concerning advice is so negative that it beggars belief since it is written by a guy who has no time for anything or anyone Catholic. We pray all these men will stay always close to Christ. Let’s wish them well by our encouragement. God bless them.

9.04 Bp Pat strikes me as the arch “Catholic” down to Paul VI missal, just (apparently) less Roman than some. As for encouragement it comes in surprising forms. I would love 7 years free tuition in philosophy, history and Latin (though I’m told it’s not quite like that). If we pray for the world and our countries (especially Our Fathers and Glory Be’s), perhaps danger will advance less rapidly, but they should still not consider themselves bound.

This is no time in history to entangle on aesthetic or even ethnic grounds. You are not a “priest for ever” not even in any pretend order or invisible prelature. Rome is not the city mentioned in Rev ch 21. Don’t go in “communion” with Asian haters. Put your sacrifice outside the door and find your brother somewhere else. Shake the dust of that town off you. These four young men, probably without realising it, are entering in to clerical life and culture that has been shown to be damaging not only to them but to those around them. It is a culture of a lack of transparency, openness, culture, honesty, where duplicity, parallel lives and self-delusion abound, not to mention dysfunctional patterns of life and acting out sexually, which + Pat has outlines – cruising areas, truck stops, gay saunas, dark rooms, pornography etc. For the most part, these young men will be living a lie, and fooling themselves, and hoping to fool others. For a long time their predecessors in the clerical cabal were able to get away with this. No longer. We, the laity, are more clued up to the reality, and they will be surveilled closely. What is saddest about this is that these young men will not have happy, contented and integrated lives as seminarians and priests. They will always be trying to pull the wool over people’s eyes, trying to get away with things on the quiet, always worried about being found out, and constantly lying to themselves and the others. It does not have the makings of a happy future for them. I hope that they have a chance to read + Pat’s open letter to them, and to read the views and comments, so that they cannot say in the future that they were not warned. What parent or family member or friend would encourage these men to go forward to the seminary ?

I’m still bemused by the Prior business. If what seems to be being said about his inappropriate behaviour in Maynooth is true, and if it true that he was let go by the SJs from their novitiate because of his harassing of other novices / young men, then why the hell is he still in active ministry ? I’d really like an answer to that. Is it that all the stuff that is being said here is simply not true ? Or is it because bishops have just carried on ignoring such things and are just happy to have him filling a slot in a parish ?

Thank you DG. The Garngad Lad is fine. It has taken 6 weeks to arrange a funeral for a close family member. Such is the effect of covid on everything including funeral arrangement. Covid was not the cause of death. During which, I have had a series of health scares and tests. Thankfully Cancer has been ruled out. Just a minor treatable ailment.
Actually, I did post twice n support of PB yesterday about Cahal Daly presiding at his father’s funeral. However I did not use Garngad Lad.

Pat, I’ve had two vaxx jabs, so am not a sceptic/denier and I’m glad we have the vaccines.
However, I think that for children the risk of vaccination outweighs the benefits, given that covid is is not a risk to children. Do you think parents, rather than children, should have the final say on whether their children are vaxxed?

I don’t know Ciaran Bacchus, but Damien is a very decent guy. He’s worked with young people in West Belfast for more than a decade, and he didn’t go in to this decision blind… we had many a conversation about the difficulties ahead. Ciaran and Damien have already completed Year 1 in Villadolid so aren’t going in fresh. Notably, four from Down and Connor arrived in Villadolid a couple of weeks ago for their first year.
I wish them well, and pray for them. I could never survive diocesan priesthood, but there are good and faithful lay people in Ireland who need caring and compassionate sacramental ministers, no after how disastrous the clerical state has become!

9.49: What an offensive, gratuitous insult to Magdalen survivors. There is no comparison, Pat. This is absurd. The Magdalen women cleaned your laundry while a student in Clonliffe and Waterford!! Do you ever feel guilty about this abuse which we as students benefited from? We, Pat, were silently complicit in the abuse of these women behind walls. It bothers me greatly at times. That is why comparing a seminary to a “Magdalen” laundry is offensive. I have encountered some women in the parish where I work who were incarcerated in these laundries and I look back to those student days when these women probably scrubbed your clothes and mine. They would have appreciated the comfy life of a seminary instead. Shame on us now.

I think back now to the reality that I never, for one moment, thought about who or where washed my seminarian laundry back in mid 1960’s. Still remember my green coloured laundry bag’s tag FH32. The bags were left at bottom stairs outside college’s “shop.”
We never saw them go or return: just knew they were done in some Dublin convent’s laundry. We were obliviously starting off on the clerical path of expecting “others” to cater for us.
Sowing the seeds of clerical exceptionalism.

At 9:48pm – poor wee girls, in those laundries, presided over by wicked nuns, having to hand scrub the skid marks, piss spots and spunk stains, out of the sacred underpants of the holy young seminarians, with carbolic soap.

The McAleese Report provided a balanced account of this. The resulting cries of pain from the compo campaigners told anyone reasonable all they needed to know. I know that a portion of the women continued (the laundry in Donnybrook outlasted the Sisters of Charity convent, only merging recently with Kings Laundry of Tallaght with operations moving there) in those laundries (I saw that in one with my own eyes) after their time there ended. In other places the elderly nuns and retired laundrywomen now live, or ended their days under the same roof. Lunatic analogies to Dachau and other concentration camps shows that myths about these institutions are basically a foundation myth for sneed Ireland.

There’s no question that Ireland was a place where eccentric bachelor farmers could find themselves committed by greedy sisters or other relatives to lunatic asylums, and that generally this country locked up vast numbers, for any number of reasons, or clear reason, but the analogies to concentration camps found in many places online are complete insane. It more than veers into the realm of Holocaust denial (these same people often screech about Israel).

Anyhow abuse (sexual and psychological) in seminaries is getting some attention, but if Francis plucked bishop Zanchetta (so accused) from legal trouble in Argentina, I do not think he cares overmuch, barring possible legal exposure or loss of face.

While deciding to catalogue a book by Evelyn Voss Wise on priestly life in Baltimore, I found that it wasn’t as sentimental as I thought it would be. Indeed I had no clue about the Great Fire of Baltimore in 1904 which greatly affected the main character’s poor parishioners. The author made the asthmatic priest responsible for the upbringing of two orphan boys and for the care of his housekeeper.
I mention this because it is pleasant to think of a good priest although he comes from a book published in 1946 when Pius XII, the last Roman pope, was gloriously reigning.

I was an undergrad at the university and I (as well as some other students) would sometimes chat up with some of the seminarians. I’d lie to say that I didn’t make out with a seminarian during my time. I did get very affectionate with this seminarian (c. 2014). The both of us were so frustrated over the stupid “celibacy” rule. He was so much comfort to me and helped me so much during the many pitfalls during my time in Maynooth. But at the same time, I wanted to protect him, why we had to make the decision to cut off the contact. There isn’t a day that passes that I don’t think of him. But it wasn’t uncommon. So many of us know of a former sabbatical officer of the Student Union who flung himself onto more than one seminarian – there was a lot of hypocrisy with that union by throwing the seminarians under the bus, but loved using them for the sex. Oh, the stories are endless.
