216,000 CHILDREN ABUSED BY FRENCH CATHOLIC PRIESTS !

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av-embeds/58801183/vpid/p071j0t8

Over 3000 priests were incvolved in the abuse if the 216,000 children.

This figure covers from 1950 until now.

The number of children abused could rise to 330,000.

The majority of the abused were boys between the ages of 10 and 13.

While the commission found evidence of as many as 3,200 abusers – out of a total of 115,000 priests and other clerics – it said this was probably an underestimation.

In 1996 there were 27,000 priests in France.

In 2006 there were 20,000 – a drop of 7,000.

What is the figure now after another 15 years?

PAY SAYS:

These abuse figures from “the oldest daughter of the Church” are alarming and horrific.

It means that upwards of 3200 French priests abused children in a period of 71 years.

This is not sinply a problem.

Its a MASSIVE and WORLD SHATTERING problem.

Its a good enough reason for the Republic of France to seize all the possessions of the RCC in France and to ban the RCC in that country.

Its a good enough reason to imprison any bishop or priest in France who abused a child or covered the abuse up.

France is already anti-clerical.

It will be much more so from now on.

Isn’t it amazing how the city has changed over the decades; just where does all the time go? I suppose I’m just a bit of a nostalgic kind of girl, always have been. I was mortified, at first, when they got rid of the old Dolly tubs! It was only after the Liverpool City Corporation brought in the “new” washers that I realised just how much of a nightmare they were.
Then they bricked up all the cottages, as well. It’s not the same anymore, is it? 😢

Abuse and the systemic covering up of child clerical abuses are very much of topic for both this blog and for more importantly for the city of Liverpool at this very sad time. Bishop Pat, when this news breaks it will be very damaging for future ecumenical relations, not to mention a very uncomfortable and akward void to filled by the new Anglican Bishop of Liverpool.
The damage caused is immense and will leave a very real feeling of pain and a frightening lack of trust in both the Police and the the legal arena of the city (including judicial circles!).

Yet again, the Catholic Church is utterly shamed or should be. There are no words to sufficiently express this horror over a 70 year period. I believe that soon there will be an international investigation into the crimes of clerical sexual abuse and cover-up by Church authorities. A totally independent body of forensic psychologists, psychiatrists, police personnel, academics and historians must thoroughly investigate the world wide culture within the Church which allowed this horror of abuse to happen, sometimes knowingly. While the Church has made efforts – by force of civil authorities – to change much to prevent abuse, the on-going revelations and various reports warrant a totally independent scrutiny. As a priest, I cannot trust the Church authorities any longer to radically change and renew itself. This report is shattering for all victims and survivors and resurrects their trauma. The primary and foremost contributory factor of anti clericalism and anti church sentiment is the criminal sexual abuse by clerics and the lack of honesty, responsibility and transparency by Bishops. And who can blame once loyal Catholics for deserting what many of us (priests) believe is a quickly sinking titanic? The French report is a damning judgment of the Catholic church worldwide. I just hope and pray the French hierarchy will immediately respond to survivors and that survivors receive the necessary support they ask for.

As we see yet more evidence of widespread RC clerical abuse, this time in France, ( by that I mean sinful actions contrary to behavioural actions those clerics preach as absolute central requirements of their religious beliefs), how are we to believe that these clerics really believed in all the gobbledygook they professed?
I, for one, believe that a very significant proportion of RCC clergy are inveigled into the clerical profession from cradle Catholic indoctrinated backgrounds and youthful idealistic naivety. They eventually realise it’s one big massive confidence trick of no foundation, but by then are “sucked in” to perpetuating the myth from lack of alternatives and the comforts of an undemanding lifestyle of exceptionalism and privilege. The weird demands of celibacy and clerical insularity have given rise to the abusive behaviour now being revealed worldwide.
In essence, religion is a farcical confidence trick piggybacked onto human insecurities.

While secular authority subscribed to real spiritual values, the ethic among a subset of clergy bosses was, they are there to keep us in order, but nowadays these are saying secular authority are there to make an “arrangement” with.
Ordinary laity “could” be told God was beyond understanding because they didn’t have much idea that God valued their individuality. The system carried on where “the absolute” was ensconced in “idealist philosophy”: Latino places, Jesuit France, Hegel’s Germany.
Duns Scotus’ qualms were with a distorted concept of God’s having characteristics (albeit we only know a small part of the story). Any child understands God’s characteristics when honestly told, and any child is able to appreciate real paradoxes.

The notion of the Superman, elevated above common morality, came to Nietzsche and Hitler from the French. Combine that with clericalism, and you have the utterly weird “spirituality” of the likes of Thomas Phiilippe, who was the sexually abusive Dominican priest who inspired Jean Vanier in his own Jimmy Saville -like crusade of public philanthropy combined with vicious sexual abuse in private. Look him up online. There really has to be some serious scholarly analysis of this phenomenon, since it has now become clear that many sexually abusive clerics, imams, rabbis, gurus and other religious alphas don’t think that they are doing anything wrong. BTW, the French State already owns most of the property that the RC Church in France uses, which is why Macron was able to utter his batrachian burble about immediate restoration even before the fire was finally put out at Notre Dame.

Most likely far worse. We exported clerics to the four corners of the globe. Meanwhile, back in Ireland, abusive clerical cover ups went on for generations. See John Cooneys article from 2006 where he highlights a secret house for ‘immoral’ clergy was set up by Irish Catholic bishops who were so appalled 60 years ago by evidence of immoral behaviour among priests. The bishops secretly authorised the setting up of a ‘House for Clergy Under Correction’ in Waterford. According to Cooney, admission to the House was open to not only priests attached to the Irish dioceses but also priests attached to dioceses in Britain, and Irish priests generally, whether secular or religious. Openness, honesty and transparency, please, bishops! End the complicit silence.

I wish people would refrain from making excuses for The Pope. He is the head of the organisation and could have all the priests, bishops and cardinals arrested, jailed and excommunicated in a heart-beat. He could also sell every Stock, Share and property owned by the church to put it into a trust for those who have been harmed and start the church afresh from a humble new beginning.
Would this not be the moral thing to do?

Like

I am sorry to burst your bubble but your tendency to under estimate the problem is a tacit enabling trait.

The reality is that the numbers of victims coming forward needs to be multiplied by X10 to reach the real figure of those typically harmed because of the stigma and shame that reporting what happened to them can make them feel that it will damage their family, their job prospects and just how they think people will view them or talk about them.

The real problem lies in that there will be between 10 and 20% of all staff members of the church who will be paedophiles and around 50 to 70% who will be Paedophile enablers.

Sadly, the system designed by the church will tend to expel the good priests whilst retaining the crooked one’s so it is probably a much higher percentage than perceived.

The French’s libertarian society already makes the abuse of children a sport rather than an evil which can be evidenced by still allowing incest to be not criminalised or frowned upon.

The protection has to stop and there must be proper atonement.

You cannot just blame the perpetrators while giving the enablers a get out of jail free card. The reason this is a problem is that the system is designed to allow CSA to flourish. It is deliberate and planned. Not a coincidence.

It will not be long before we begin to hear all sorts of minimising and excuses for what has happened in France and in other countries in the Roman Catholic Church. Namely, the usual Nichols appeal to it not being that bad really, and that most sexual abuse takes place within families. Which is supposed to minimise what has happened in the Roman Catholic Church. We will hear about lay schools, and clubs, and Mosques and Protestant Churches where abuse has happened. Shorthand for saying it happens everywhere and there is nothing different or unusual about it happening in the RCC. Well, that may be so. But, we are talking about the RCC, which has special characteristics that elevate its responsibility and its sin. Firstly, that it purports to uphold the Gospel, next that it does so in a Church and clerical culture that is based on a distorted and unhinged understanding of human sexuality, so that its leaders / clergy lead dysfunctional, parallel and duplicitous lives, and they spend an inordinate amount of time and energy foisting on to people their unhealthy interest in sex and relationships. Also, it’s institutional discriminatory misogyny which minimises and demeans 50 % of the world’s population leads to an arrogance which finds its expression in all kinds of odd behaviours and attitudes. So, I will not tolerate even the slightest diminishing of what has happened in France and elsewhere. Which will happen, trust my word. We should accept nothing other than sack cloth and ashes from the RCC. As to those clergy who believe that non of this has happened on their watch, and that they knew nothing – well, the same excuses have historically been used by criminally complicit people and nations for centuries. Think Germans who knew nothing about the wickedness of the Nazis and the concentration camps ! We didn’t tolerate that then, we should not tolerate such clerical excuses now. In fact, every priest and bishop is complicit in what has happened and continues to happen, because they are at the centre and core of an institution that is build on the discrimination and dysfunction that I have mentioned before. They are complicit by their presence and their proximity. It would be great to see a few bishops and priests say that they are so shamed and humbled, and realise their own complicity, that they give up their ministry and clerical status and make their own independent way in the world. That would speak volumes about the gravity of the situation. I doubt if we will see that. Life is much way too comfortable in the clerical cocoon, even a discredited, despised and criminal clerical womb.

Initially it was surprising to find a few enquirers commenting about their own doubts. 1.06: While this blog is primarily about church criminal abuse and corruption, it is correct to state clearly that there is a huge amount of abuse of children, vulnerable and intellectually challenged people taking place in society. We focus rightly on the Church from whom much is expected but other abuses are happening on a huge scale. This observation has been made by experts who work in various agencies but somehow our sense of rage is not activated to the same extent as when church related abuses occur. Thus, much pain, hurt and suffering is happening on a daily basis. Our society should outrightly condemn all and every abuse in an equitable anger. The church will collapse in its present structures quicker than we imagine. The “essence” of following Christ and being a community in his name must alter and change NOW. Today, with the French report, the Church worldwide has fallen deeper into shame and sin. We need the people in our parishes to rescue us. While it may seem shallow, today especially is a day when I feel very disillusioned more than ever with the Church and priesthood for allowing, facilitating and covering up the horror of sexual abuse crimes. I pray that all survivors will receive justice and compassion from the Church.

People who are against the Church, have a high expectation of the Church. They are fully right to have a high expectation of the Church. Episcopal leaders must strive to ensure that the Church sets a good example for all of society.
Some contributors on here have made the point that new bishops are very well aware of safeguarding and their responsibilities. Is a fair distinction being made between the pre-safeguarding era and the current day safeguarding era?

No, Seamus. There is no fair distinction to be made between the pre-safeguarding era and the current day safeguarding era. Historic abuse cases are still covered up. Safeguarding MUST be independent of the Church. By the way, historically, the Gardai assisted Episcopal leaders in covering up abuse cases.

You have to laugh at the Romanists’ attempts to minimize.
Abuse in the church is different because nobody else claims to be the divinely appointed channel of grace and salvation to the world.
It is different in the RC church because while it has gone horribly wrong elsewhere the church’s explicit policy was to cover up, which was followed by all the bishops and the international coverage of the church meant this far reaching policy had great impact.
But you keep on in denial, it’ll just bring closer the day when you’re controlled by the state.

The Catholic priesthood as lived currently in the RCC is toxic and dangerous, both for priests and for the laypeople of the Church. Why do they keep flogging a dead horse ? The know it is not fit for purpose, and yet they still encourage young men to go to seminary in order to live this kind of life which will damage them and others. Surely, the pope, bishops and priests realise this themselves ? So, why do they not do something about it, instead of still going on about what a wonderful sacrifice and service to the Lord it is ? My own view is that there needs to be a cataclysmic collapse of the Church in order for people to wake up and salvage the good essentials that do exist. It will come.

French Catholic Church inquiry finds “veil of silence” hid abuse of 216,000 minors over 5 decades
Updated October 5 2021.
Paris — “An independent inquiry into alleged sex abuse of minors by French Catholic priests, deacons and other clergy has found some 216,000 victims from 1950 to 2020, a “massive phenomenon” that was covered up for decades by a “veil of silence.”
The landmark report, released Tuesday after two and a half years of investigations, follows widespread outrage over a string of sex abuse claims and prosecutions against Church officials around the globe. But as CBS News correspondent Chris Livesay reports, the French inquiry involves not only the latest revelations about abuse by Catholic clergy, but possibly highest number of victims ever identified by reports and investigations that have been carried out worldwide.
When lay members of the Church such as teachers at Catholic schools are included, the number of child abuse victims climbs to 330,000 over the seven-decade period.”

Catholic Church child sexual abuse scandal
“From Australian country towns to schools in Ireland and cities across the US, the Catholic Church has faced an avalanche of child sexual abuse accusations in the last few decades.
High-profile cases and harrowing testimony given to public inquiries have continued to keep the issue in the headlines.
In the most recent development, a damning inquiry found that some 216,000 children in France had been sexually abused by members of the clergy since 1950.”

Bombshell report says French Church, not churchgoers, must pay compensation to more than 200,00 victims but bishop says it can’t afford to.
The French Catholic Church was on Wednesday forced to defend calls for churchgoers to pay for compensation for tens of thousands of victims of sex abuse via donations, saying neither it nor the Vatican had the funds to do so without help from believers.
Debate over compensation came a day after a major investigation revealed that French clergy had abused more than 200,000 children over 70 years, with the number soaring to 330,000 when including abuse by lay workers.
One victims’ group put the scale of compensation at up to 10,000 euros per person, meaning the Church would have to stump up €2 billion euros.
Jean-Marc Sauvé, head of the commission that compiled the bombshell report, said that it was “up to the Church to take on this burden” as an institution and by taking money from the “estate of abusers” rather than from Catholic donations. Claims should be handled by an independent body, he added.
Jean-François Colosimo, a historian and theologian, told Le Parisien: “(The French Church) should be able to pay”.
However, Archbishop Eric Moulins-Beaufort, head of the Bishops’ Conference of France, said without donations it would have “difficulty” doing so.
Selling off property would be hard, he claimed, as “most assets are churches that thus don’t have much architectural value and are unsellable”.
“Our real estate doesn’t bring us in anything, it costs us money,” he said. All churches in France built before 1905 belong to the state. However, the Church owns around 3,000 built after that date, along with around 50,000 buildings for pastoral use.
As for the Vatican, the archbishop said: “It’s in chronic deficit. We are the ones who send money to the Vatican every year,.”
The Holy See’s income is from donations, real estate management and investments. In March, it said it was running a deficit of €50m due to the Covid pandemic and plummeting museum admissions.
Pope Francis on Wednesday expressed sorrow for the abuse in France.
“I would like to express to the victims my sadness, sorrow for the trauma they have suffered and also my shame, our shame, for the church’s inability, for too long, to put them at the centre of its concerns,” he said at his weekly general audience.
Asked what the Pope thought about demands that French victims of clerical sex abuse receive compensation, the Vatican spokesman did not respond.
There was also no response to the question of how the abuse in France was allowed to continue for so long.
Several hours after the pope spoke, a Vatican court cleared two priests charged in connection with alleged sexual abuse in a youth seminary in the Vatican between 2006 and 2012. The trial is the first in the Vatican concerning sexual abuse that allegedly occurred on Vatican territory.
It remains to be seen what the French Church will do with the report and its 45 recommendations. It is due to come up with an action plan next month.
In the meantime, a close adviser to Pope Francis suggested that similar inquiries should be launched in other countries.
“The ecclesiastical authorities in other countries must now have the same courage as the Church in France. I’m hoping that Italy would do this,” said Hans Zollner, 54, a Jesuit priest and key counsellor on sex abuse issues to Pope Francis.
Responsibility for the scandal in France is “systemic and institutional. Criminals were treated in a negligent way and they were actively hidden.”
When asked if French bishops should resign over the scandal, he said: ”If a bishop has not done what the law of his State, and Canon Law, demands of him, then yes.”
President Emmanuel Macron reacted to the report on Wednesday by saying he “hailed the spirit of responsibility of the French Church, which has decided to look at this issue in the face as other Churches across Europe, in particular, have done”.
“This work must continue with lucidity and calm”, he said, adding that it should be seen in the wider context of “protecting children” from abuse in all parts of society.

Pat, many commenters today have made some serious points, though some are bitingly hard to take, though very honest, especially from men who have left priesthood or who left before ordination. Their reflections are very searingly honest. I do not share their dismissive comments about religious beliefs but can understand very much their present analysis. I accept the awful realities now facing the church and its priests but I’m unable to offer a different way forward which will enable a rebuilding of trust and integrity. The self inflicted damage is like being pierced by sharp icebergs that are sinking us quicker than we ever imagined, This time the icebergs are the sexual abuse scandals, evil carried out and perpetrated by men of God. We live with a horrible testimony and legacy of betrayal and cover ups, corruption and denial. The French church has produced some great founders of religious orders and has many acclaimed saints and it is almost beyond comprehension to know what has occurred in France. I suspect we will have further reports on other countries, Italy, Spain and others…No cleric should ever minimise the depth of hurt and pain caused to thousands of children and of survivors. Only the full TRUTH by an independent body of professionals, as in France, will be acceptable in unearthing all church abuse. Some commenters today have referred to the Catholic “thing” – religious beliefs – as gobbledygook and fairy tale stuff and superstitious and being irrelevant. Pat, I wonder if these commenters consider that the religious beliefs you espouse through the Oratory are also in the gobbledygook and fairy tale genre? Or are you perceived as divine? However you are seen, the blog is useful for an honest analysis of present crises in the Church, however difficult it is to hear the TRUTH!!

The Episcopal leaders know the extent of abuse corruption cover up and denial. The People of God along with general public don’t know it’s extent.I doubt if the Vatican will permit unearthing of all Church abuse in Ireland. In my view it will have to be demanded
by the people.

9:18 the priests and people of the diocese of Winchester recently got rid of their autocratic bishop and similar is coming in London, proving that the troll at 9:42 is a liar.
However Catholics are conditioned to think they have to belong to a church and have to go to their parish church. There is totally nothing wrong with shopping round or being freelance for a time. In fact I think the future will increasingly look like that because there are many, many people in your position.

Like

11.00: 9.42 while brief isn’t “a liar” because look at the way so many C of E churches are in with Luther Pendragon / Marjie Zacharias / New Wine / Bethel / Bill Johnson / Smyth / Fletcher, some of which affairs are out of the hands of local bishops because certain “societies” or “streams” (namely highly funded and agressive cliques) have the stranglehold. This is no better than when the NCW or the “traddies” or the “LGQ+ bandwagon” or the various “knights” or this “set” or that “set” have been given controlling influence by hook or by crook in RC dioceses or deaneries (through bad influence from the archbishops).
Some politicians will tell an unpopular C of E bishop it’s respectable to retire at retiring age and the same politicians will ensure another numskull gets in (there are a few that aren’t numskulls). Thus if one chooses to bother one should look sharp and be prepared not to attach. Some of the Methodists or Baptists aren’t bad, but we should look sharp everywhere. My mother told me when small not to let other small people rob me of something small. Shouldn’t we be wary of big organisations robbing us of big things namely our credence?
