EMAIL TO ABBOT GENERAL OF CISTERCIANS.

Eamon Fitzgerald

Dear Dom Eamon,

As the Abbot General of the Order of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance, you will be aware (more than most) of the conspicuous decline in monastic vocations.

A lot has changed, since you entered Mount Melleray Abbey; I understand that your novice master was the late Fr. Kevin Fogarty, OCSO, who departed this life on March 29, 2016.

In our present age, of those, that do make the decision to enter monastic life — only a handful “survive” the postulancy and the two-year novitiate to profess simple vows.

Thereafter, the individual will remain in simple vows for three years. And, if, he is, then deemed suitable, he will be permitted to make solemn monastic profession. Then, if a vocation to priesthood is discerned; the monk will be ordained a deacon and a priest. But, this, too, is an increasingly rare occurrence.

On the ordination of monks, I was delighted to read about the recent ordination of Br. John Dineen, OCSO, as a priest on September 26, 2021 at Mount Melleray Abbey, by my brother bishop, Alphonsus Cullinan. I noted that you were in attendance, and laid hands on the now, Fr. John, during the liturgy.

JOHN DINEEN

The Cistercian website records the priestly ordination of the following monks this year:

a) Fr. Teodoro Ekongo Satchenda on September 12, 2021 at the monastery of Maraflores, Chile;

b) Fr. Simon-Marie Nguyen on May 30, 2021 at the monastery of Bricquebec, France; and,

c) Fr. Augustine Kandathil on January 30, 2021 at the monastery of Kurisumala, India.

However, at the time of this writing — it is surprising that there is absolutely NO reference to the ordination of Fr. Dineen, OCSO, on the Cistercian website. Can this be attributed to the insouciance of the website administrator? But the real question is: are the Cistercians wishing keep Mount Melleray Abbey off the radar?

Is it impertinent of me to suggest the desire to keep Mount Melleray Abbey off the radar, might-be, in part, due to your on-going failure to order an investigation into the allegations of serious sexual misconduct that have been repeatedly made against the Ordinary of the monastery, Dom Richard Purcell OCSO?

PURCELL

As I have written in the past, it would be churlish of you to deny (GIVEN the wonders of mobile phone recording technology) what you acknowledged (to me) about Purcell’s behaviour at Mount St. Joseph Abbey during our telephone call that lasted eighteen (18) minutes and thirty-eight (38) seconds on September 13, 2020. You, and you alone, confirmed [to me, Bishop Pat Buckley] what was already well-known in the Irish clerical gay scene about Dom Richard Purcell.

Within the present, I would like to respectfully suggest that both you as the Abbot General, and the Cistercians as a Congregation were/are indulging a quixotic fantasy in naïvely hoping that Purcell’s rampant and out-of-control sexual (consensual I hasten to add) activity with men was/is under control. What happened at Mount St. Joseph Abbey, Roscrea, was not a one-off.

The corporate silence of the Cistercians with their concomitant failure to deal with Purcell is inexcusable and indefensible. It makes one legitimately wonder: what else are the Cistercians covering-up?

While the ordination of Fr. Dineen is not recorded, thus far, on the website of the Cistercians, we do, however, have the homily notes of Bishop Alphonsus from the website of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference. I think it would be fair to say that I am not liked by my brother bishop, Alphonsus. But, I absolutely agree with this simple fact within his homily:

“For generations of people Mount Melleray has been central to this area and beyond, central to the faith and lives of countless souls. How many people have been spiritually fed here, consoled, encouraged, pardoned”.

Dom Eamon, Mount Melleray Abbey is a holy place; it has been sanctified by the prayers and the silent witness of generations of monks. It is a place that is deeply loved by a great number of people; but, you, Dom Eamon, display a callous indifference to its history rooted in persecution; to its monastic witness; you, Dom Eamon, betray the Cistercian charism by wilful and deliberate inaction.

Your failure (and, it is your failure alone) to deal with Richard Purcell raises legitimate questions about your own monastic, priestly, and canonical integrity as the Abbot General. You are bringing your own tenure as Abbot General and by extension the Cistercians into disrepute. Clearly, you have learned nothing from the scandals that have enveloped the Irish church over the past three decades. Your obdurate inaction is surprising, disappointing, and scandalous.

If, the Cistercians are hoping that by playing the long game, i.e. ignoring the allegations, the scandal (which is the occult gay life of Richard Purcell masquerading as a Cistercian abbot) would disappear — they were very much mistaken. Very soon, this cover-up will become very public, and you will have questions to answer. But, Dom Eamon, it is never too late to do the right thing.

In conclusion, while I suspect you view me with contempt; it is my erstwhile hope and prayer that the priestly ordination of Fr. John Dineen (whose solemn monastic profession you received) will be a moment of grace, a sign of hope and renewal, and the catalyst to inspire others to pursue the monastic life at Mount Melleray Abbey.

I, too, also hope and sincerely pray, it will inspire you to courageously act and do what is right before God for Mount Melleray Abbey, the house of your monastic profession.

Sincerely in Christ, I remain,

+ Pat Buckley.

PAT SAYS:

The scandal of Richard Purcell has not gone away and will not go away.

It will not go away until the Cisterciansand the RC bishop of Waterford, Phonsie deals with it.

Time will not make it go away.

In fact, time increases the scandal.

The scandal will overshadow next years international chapter of the Cistercians when Eamon Fitzgerald ceases being abbot general – which will be attended by representatives if the 160 monasteries in the order.

WE intend to take steps to put the Purcell scandal on the chapter agenda.

How’s that chap Hourigan doing so far in this case? Hope he would be able to knock down that huge wall of silence and series of non response coming from cisterican order and phonsie as well.
Give my regards to him. Cos one of late relatives got married there. Plus late Fr O Brien that I met him way back.
👆 because of that, I have an interest in this case.

Where did Abbot Purcell obtain his apparent conviction that it is OK for a monk to indulge in any sort of sexual activity? Is it rumoured that this is endemic to Mount Melleray, or did he pick it up elsewhere? I notice on this blog that he was meant to have spent time at the Cistercian monastery of Santa Croce at Rome, which Pope Benedict suppressed after (so I understand) the senior monks were prostituting the juniors -among other things. Where else has he resided as a monk? What happened to the incontinent monks who were thrown out of Santa Croce? Where are they now? Are they still able to exert an influence?

Purcell is following Rule 1 of the RCC playbook for how to deal with difficult situations – say nothing, sit tight, and hope it will go away. In part they are succeeding, and I’m sure the bishop and the abbot general would be quite happy for it all to go away and to carry on with business as usual. What they did not expect was to come up against + Pat and his blog ! Pat will keep chipping away at this, and every time it looks like it has gone and hidden beneath the waves, he will mention it again. + Pat and this blog will keep these people on their toes and call them to account. They deserve that uncertainty because of the arrogant and entitled way they presume that they can cover things us, deny things, do nothing, and just assume that the rest of us are stupid. Well, with + Pat’s help, they will realise that they have bitten off more than they can chew ! Keep it up, Pat !

The abbot was elected in August 2017 for 6 years. A new abbot general will be elected in 2022, there is no fixed term of office for the Abbot General, but he must offer his resignation on reaching 75. A new abbot of Mount Melleray will be elected in 2023. A lot of key milestones over the next couple of years.
It would seem a reasonable expectation at the very very least that the abbot does not seek re-election in 2023 nor that his brethren do not seek to re-elect him.
A scandalous padre casts a dark cloud over a parish through no fault of the parishioners. A scandalous abbot casts a dark cloud over the monastery through no fault of his brethren.
The integrity of the abbey is at stake.

+ Pat, I just had a look at the website of the Cistercians. No reference to the ordination of Fr John Dineen. Very surprising. Also, it is odd that there is no reference to the ordination on the Facebook pages of Glencarin Abbey and Mount St Joseph Abbey.
I did see a great quotation on the Facebook page of Mount St Joseph Abbey from Dom Eugene Boylan “A Christian who does not pray is like a man who neither thinks nor wills – a mere animal in the spiritual life”. May be if Richard Purcell and Eamon Fitzgerald spent more time in prayer the church might be in a better place.
Your email to the abbot general is brilliant. It is sad that it has to be written.
The two things that stand out in your e-mail are it is the failure of the abbot general and his failure alone to deal with this scandal. And you do wonder what else could the Cistercians be covering up in Ireland?
I didn’t believe this story about Mount Melleray when you first started blogging. A year later you are still banging this drum. But the fact you have not been threatened with court in a letter from Purcell’s solicitors confirms what you are saying is true.

We would all love to read Mulvihill’s views about Neil Dargan (a registered teacher) going on national TV telling us all about his illegal adoption and how wrong it was but he is happy to remain silent about another form of institutional wrongdoing.

In over 49 years I have never had any such disclosure made to me in confession. Some individuals brought to my attention their own abuse by clerics and family members. I gave all relevant contacts for them to report the abuse or to speak to professionals. Where a cleric or church worker was concerned in a parish I immediately ensured the civil and Diocesan authorities were informed . Whatever pastoral support I could give, I offered my support to those who sought my advice. I recall once curtailing a “confession” because I discerned something untoward about to be discussed and asked the person to meet with me outside the confessional, explaining to that person my reasons for doing so. Personally, were a disclosure of sexual abuse made to me in a confessional I would declare my moral responsibility to that person. I have never been faced with this dilemma yet, but we cannot as a Church give any hiding place to any abuser, cleric or non-cleric. Never again. Too much hurt and damage has been caused to too many people by this “seal” not only in confession but in clericalism itself which is a poison if you are gripped by it, often deadening our moral obligations, civilly, religiously and ecclesiastically.

Thirdly, who had appointed him to chairman of towards healing ? A bishop i believe ,who?

4th His double life doesnt tally with his priestly vows and the effect of abuses on the abused his knowledge is zero unless he has an unfettered access to the ffiles held by Towards healing re therapists and their clients..

5th Towards healing chairman should be of an independent person not affliated to the church hence impartial and hands off etc.

Dear Bishop Buckley.
If a person was so inclined, is it possible to upload a longhand script to the blog? I have in mind a very particular venture.

I was in Maynooth with a camp chap called Seamus Hennessy, aka as Sadie Hennessy. He is now a very good pal of Dom Richard Purcell and I suppose offering him bargain basement communications advice. The same Sadie Hennessy is admissions officer in Cistercian College Roscrea where Dicky was and was appointed by the monks to be on the board of management. The lot are up to there necks.

That old woman Hennessy is Purcell’s best friend. As a confirmed bachelor Hennessy will look after Dicky.

I like to deal in matters of fact.

Purcell needs to resign as chair of Towards Healing immediately . If he does not, the integrity of the other members is up for scrutiny, four of which I shall explicitate on…..Governance and Independence ……check out what the fiction is on the site…..towardshealing.ie

The irony of the Title. Into Great Silence, the director even having waited all those years was not aware of the irony! The irony is particularly Irish.

Did Richard Purcell spend any time in the Grande Chartreuse?……full of young monks some time ago…..with a long waiting list to enter, particularly from South America I understand ……The narrative of these historical enclaves was well understood by Henry 8 and more recently Napoleon Bonaparte and successive French Governments.

I once saw a gay stand-up comedian and 50% of his routine was about how common and hilarious STDs were in his community.
I think about that a lot when people demand that I affirm their lifestyle.
They don’t just lie to others.
They lie to themselves most of all.

Can’t JP Lyttle, aka Power Bottom, enter the monastery and cater for Dom Dicks voracious appetite for condomless anal sex? At least it would all be in the house and contain the scandal.

At 21.39 we have 37 comments from Wm. Mulvihill. What a major tome of a book he will yet produce! But he’ll need a good editor or writer before a page would get through a door of any publisher. It’s a crazy, bizarre style of expression.

8.47: William, you don’t have my interest except to say you must have so much freeeeeeeee time since leaving priesthood. I scroll to read comments and you’ve now clocked almost 40 comments, most of which are repetitive! Incidentally, I only read scholarly books by academics or noted authors. So far, you are not of this genre. Sorry.

I have always been suspicious of those who presume on future tense…..as opposed to present and past. Capito ?

In fairness +Pat, the Cistercians garner significant interest on your blog. You should have a blog asking peoples opinion on the trials and tribulations of Purcell’s wingman Seamus Hennessey. You might be surprised what you get.
