ANOTHER CISTERCIAN SITUATION – CALDEY ET AL.

Hello Pat

I will let you know what I know about Caldey Abbey.

I used to have a friend living on the Island and visited her there up until about 8 years ago when she had to leave due to ill health, so over a period of 18 years.

Some of this information she told me – she is now dead – and some I heard from a lady who had been the guest house keeper with the Carmelites at Presteigne in Wales – they had a sister who made an extended retreat at Caldey and was basically persuaded/coerced into a sexual liaison with the former Abbot Robert O’Brien, who is now dead.

But he features as someone who knew all about Kotik and his abuse and whose response was to ask him to stay within the abbey grounds.

No report went to the police.

The lady who told me this had been told by the sister concerned, whose name was Imelda.

As Presteigne is now closed I have no idea where Imelda might have gone or even if she is still a nun, but I can’t imagine that she was the first person he did that too.

He was abbot when I first visited my friend there and so I met him a few times but kept my distance.

My friend told me about Fr Desiree (aptly named) who also had inappropriate relationships with young women as at his funeral a woman tried to attend who he had clearly been intimate with when she was young, and Daniel didn’t want her to be there.

This lady and her husband had worked in the guesthouse on Caldey and had been sacked by Daniel and took their case to court for unfair dismissal and won.

My friend told me Daniel and she had an out and out argument about Sally’s attendance at the funeral and he nearly booted her off the island.

Not surprisingly she had a stroke not long after!

So my impression of Daniel is not good. I found him an arrogant man who was full of himself and thought himself better than his community.

I also knew a monk called brother Benedict who had a serious alcohol problem which was not helped by the islanders giving him access to booze.

He made final profession but then was sent off to MSB where he couldn’t cope, basically disappeared and was found dead in a ditch somewhere in the North of England.

There was also in my time a Brother Sean who was there a good while and then who left under strange circumstances and was working as a nurse somewhere near Tenby.

I hate seeing all the above written out on one level but it shows just the tip of the iceberg as to what has gone on there just with a few people whose lives have been wrecked by a serious abuse of power.

So I can’t believe Daniel when he says he had no clue about Kotik as there were letters that Robert wrote about him and Robert was very much alive when Daniel first went to Caldey from an abbey in the Netherlands, and to have 3 or 4 known paedophiles given housing there and playing a part in island life says that Caldey must have been well known in those circles.

You may have heard similar things from other people which may or may not corroborate what I am saying.Just for info.

I am an experienced mental health practitioner so am careful to weigh up what I hear and see to be sure that I am not reading more into things than is there.

I didn’t know the stuff about Purcell till I read your blog but then what happened with Pat seemed to make a lot more sense if there had been goings on at MSJ guesthouse.

PAT SAYS:

I ised to think that Cistercian monks were the holiest of the holiest.

I even believed something that up until the last few years.

But now I see the rottenness is all through them as well.

You have Purcell.

You have the Portglenone monk convicted of child abuse in the abbey.

You have the monk who worked in Derry in a parish, abused kids and was later appointed novice master in Mount Melleray.

The former abboy of Mellifont, Enda Ducey told me he had had 18 sexual partners in Mellifont, both men and women.

I personally had to escape Enda’s wandering hands as a newly ordained priest.

You have the situation mentioned above in Caldey.

You have Roscrea with Purcell, Malachy Thompson and the suspicious death of Pat.

You have the abbot general, Eamon Fitzgerald, covering up for Purcell and everything else.

I was wondering yesterday when Caldey would appear. its isolation would make it perfect to hide people.
Is Mount St Bernard on the way?

I’ve listened to an angry unordained monk, cursing the English Benedictine Congregation and ranting as to how clericalism and the gay subculture have destroyed monastic life for men. His theme is that men have became monks simply in order to get ordained without having to work their way through a seminary, and then to get involved in the active apostolate and have opportunities to abuse boys.
However, the Cistercians have MOSTLY never been involved in the apostolate (but why is Roscrea running a school?). So, the abuse at Caldey isn’t easily explained by clericalism and not by the gay subculture either, since the historic abuse cases mainly involve girls. Hence, the monk mentioned needs to think harder.
The Cistercian insistence on keeping the response to abuse accusation “in house” is because of a historical refusal to accept the authority of bishops, ever since they were founded at the end of the 11th century. They have a point, because the French bishops tried to get the Second Vatican Council to declare that all priests resident in a diocese would be under the direct authority of the bishop. Certain of the French prelates said privately that they would pull the monk-priests out of the monasteries and put them on parishes “where priests belong”. The Benedictines, Cistercians and ESPECIALLY the Carthusians saw them off. (Carthusians -the only monastic order with no hint of abuse scandal.)

TBH the opportunity for sex in the Carthusian life is limited to masturbation however nobody knows what goes on in their monasteries so there’s still time for orgies to come out.

Pat, there are lots of strange allegations being made today and some are drawing their own conclusions, almost attributing the death of individuals on the monks. This is a dangerous precedent to set: before we can make definitive judgments we need to have verifiable evidence. We must have definite proof of wrongdoing. And, more importantly, anyone who has any evidence of abuse, wrongdoing or criminal behaviour which destroys others, should go to the civil authorities. I often winder if any commenter on this blog who has information of abuse has reported to civil authorities? Could you confirm if such has ever happened, apart from doing so yourself? Enjoy awesome Canada…beautiful and amazing country…Enjoy.

Br. Benedict was found dead in a back alley in Manchester, but his death was hushed up by Abbot Daniel and the monks. He had been sent to MSB to dry out and also get away from people who Secretly brought Vodka over from the mainland for him.
Back in 2000 Fr. James Deadman who was known as a ‘healing pries’t abused many women in the guesthouse and the confessional inside MSB Church. Below is a Newspaper article from the Leicester Mercury for 10.11.200.
A CISTERCIAN monk who offered counselling and spiritual healing to women at his monastery was convicted yesterday of indecently assaulting four of them.
Robert Deadman, 69, an ordained Roman Catholic priest known to his flock as Father James, assaulted the women after anointing their bodies with oil. The court was told that Deadman often carried out the attacks in or near the confessional or in the guest retreat at St Bernard’s Abbey, Coalville, Leicestershire.
Deadman, from West End, Leicester, denied 19 charges of indecent assault at Leicester Crown Court. He was convicted of eight offences involving four women and cleared of seven others. Today the jury will continue its deliberations on four remaining charges.
There is also a monk (brother) who is still at MSB who had sex with a lady in the ladies lodge (women’s gusethouse) circa 2004. Also Abbot Joseph was very friendly with a married lady at the time and they used to pass notes to each other by leaving them under the altar cloth on St. Therese’s altar in the Abbey Church.
Also, Fr. Vincent Eley, who founded the Abbey pottery in the 1940’s had to leave because of an affair with a 16 year old girl.
Seems like every Abbey has its secrets that they hope to keep from the public, but if they truly lived the life they profess to live then there would be no secrets. The whole thing has caused me to lose my faith in all organised religion.

The Roscrea problem is not going away. It is not helpful to have an abbot who is fond of chatting with the school boys after having a few too many whiskeys.

Depends how you wish to define a quiet weekend. The monks have a great time by the sounds of it.

I’m not sure having a school with young boys at the same place as a monastic community is really good practice. We have seen what Purcell and Thompson got up to. All a bit distasteful.

What did Thompson get up to? I’ve heard of Purcell but never heard of Thompson before.

The cathedral basilica of the Immaculate conception in Denver was vandalized yesterday including references to child rapists and ‘satan lives here’ written across the doors.

Well I think the vandals should get the same punishment abusing priests get – moved to another church so they do it again. 👍

6.09: Your soynd byte at the end of your 4.36 comment is a clear indication that you infer that vandalism is a seeking of truth. Simple as. Perhaps you don’t quite understand the meaning of the sound byte nor the word revolting…”..even if revolting..” The death of an individual through any such vandalism cannot be the price for truth. Can it? Think you need a class in logic and deduction..
