EMAIL – SILVERSTREAM – ABBOT BRENDAN COFFEY.

Dear Abbot Brendan,

I am, of course, aware, that hearing from me is not a development that you will welcome. Nonetheless, it should not come as a surprise due to your lamentable, negligent, and wholly unacceptable oversight of the monastic visitation of Silverstream Priory in 2020.

Recently, I have received some fresh information about Silverstream Priory. And, that information has been confirmed by a number of priests within the Diocese of Meath. Yesterday, I sent an e-mail asking a number of pointed questions to Bishop Thomas Deenihan about the presence of a Fr. Richard Abourjaily at Silverstream Priory.

It is clear that Fr. Richard Abourjaily was resident in Silverstream Priory doing what he liked with impunity with the explicit approbation of Dom Mark Kirby, OSB, and possibly with the tacit approval of the then Bishop of Meath, Michael Smith.

Because, I believe transparency is good for the church, I published my list of questions to Bishop Deenihan on my blog. I enclose a link to the blog posting for your kind consideration:

https://bishoppatbuckley.blog/2021/10/14/silverstream-email-to-tom-deenihan/

Of course, if you are in a position to provide any answers to the questions asked of Bishop Deenihan, I would be most grateful. But, I suspect that might-be naïve on my part, however, one can always hope.

In any event, the catalyst for the present e-mail is a comment posited in the form of a question and an observation that was posted on my blog at 1.18 p.m. this afternoon in response to the above list of questions to Bishop Deenihan.

It is worth highlighting the question in full: “Was the Abourjaily matter brought up to Deenihan’s visitation? If so, it makes the visitation’s initial confirming of Dom Kirby as prior even more shocking”.

As you know, I will publish this e-mail on my blog, however, for the benefit of my readers, I will clarify what is meant by “Deenihan’s visitation”; it is the Apostolic Visitation ordered by Bishop Thomas Deenihan, the Ordinary of the Diocese of Meath in response to allegations he received from an individual whom we now know to be Dom Benedict Andersen, OSB, a monk and priest of Silverstream Priory. The visitation was conducted by you, Abbot Brendan Coffey, OSB; the frequent visitor to the gay sauna in Dublin known as The Boilerhouse, Dom Richard Purcell, OCSO, and Monsignor Gearóid Dullea, the former executive secretary to the Irish Episcopal Conference. Hence, there was sensibly a cornucopia of monastic/ecclesiastical experience to call upon.

As so many documents pertaining to the visitation have been leaked you should have no problem in answering any of the following questions.

Therefore, Abbot Brendan, are you in a position to confirm whether the presence of Fr. Richard Abourjaily was raised during the Apostolic Visitation of Silverstream Priory?

Are you able to answer if Fr. Richard Abourjaily was permitted to reside within Silverstream Priory with the ecclesiastical approbation of the Diocese of Meath?

With the benefit of hindsight complemented by your considerable experience as the Abbot of Glenstal and as a monastic troubleshooter, e.g., Ampleforth Abbey, do you consider the presence of Fr. Richard Abourjaily to have been a blessing or a curse for Silverstream Priory? I would be grateful for a considered reply to this important question.

I am told by Meath-based priests that Dom Purcell was appointed to be one of the visitators due to his purported expertise in financial matters. We were apprised in a report published by the National Catholic Reporter [hereinafter, NCR] that the three visitators stated that they are “very concerned about your [Silverstream Priory’s] current financial situation and the economic viability of the monastery”. Thus, can we infer that a proper financial audit of the community was undertaken? If not; why not?

What was your involvement (if any) in the financial audit of the community? It is my understanding that none of the people involved in the visitation hold professional qualifications in financial management/accounting. Why did you not suggest that a forensic audit of the accounts by a specialist firm be commissioned by the Diocese of Meath? Do you now consider that to have been a mistake made by the visitators?

It is, however, interesting that in the NCR article NO reference was made, in the visitators’ report to the allegations of sexual misconduct that had been levelled against Dom Mark Kirby. We learned after the completion of the visitation [September 2020] from Martin Long, Director of the Catholic Communications Office of the Irish Bishops’ Conference that Dom Mark “Kirby remains a priest in good standing and is currently on sick leave in Dublin and has resigned his post as superior”.

Thus, as the safeguarding co-ordinator for the Congregation of the Annunciation, I ask you the following question: were the allegations of sexual misconduct made against Dom Kirby not investigated during the visitation?

Was Mr. Martin Long at that time mistaken in stating that Dom Kirby was a priest in good standing or was Mr. Long being a well-paid deceiver?

We know that accusations of sexual misconduct were levelled against Dom Mark Kirby. We know that you were actively involved in the covering-up of same. Hence, do you consider that your position as the Abbot of Glenstal Abbey is untenable? Would you adopt a similar modus operandi if a similar complaint was made against a monk/priest of Glenstal Abbey? For the avoidance of doubt that is cover-up and sweep the accusation under the carpet and make it go away…

Because of your egregious handling of an allegation of sexual misconduct, do you consider that your position as the safeguarding Co-ordinator for the Congregation of the Annunciation is untenable?

Have you considered submitting your resignation as the safeguarding co-ordinator to the Abbot President of the Congregation of the Annunciation, Fr. Maksymilian R. Nawara, OSB? If not; why not?

Do you accept the charge that you have no credibility from an ecclesiastical and/or secular perspective when it comes to safeguarding?

Do you further accept that you bring “monastic safeguarding” into disrepute and your actions/initiatives within Glenstal Abbey and its school along with the wider Congregation of the Annunciation cannot be accorded any credibility?

Can the parents of students who are pupils in Glenstal Abbey School have any confidence in the safeguarding procedures in the school as a result of your active participation in the exoneration/cover-up of allegations of serious sexual misconduct in Silverstream Priory?

Would you be happy for me to send a copy of this e-mail to Mr. Seán Ó Foghlú, Secretary-General of the Irish Department of Education, asking him to bring these safeguarding concerns to the personal attention of the Minister for Education, Ms. Norma Foley? For the sake of convenience, you might wish to refer Glenstal Abbey School and your oversight of same to Mr. Foghlú. His e-mail address is: sean_ofoghlu@education.gov.ie

You exercised the delegated authority of the Ordinary of the Diocese of Meath, Bishop Deenihan, and acted as the Superior of Silverstream Priory for a period of time. Thus, if Silverstream Priory is suppressed by a Decree of the Holy See, and some members of the community wish to remain Benedictines in Ireland, would you be receptive to receiving monks from Silverstream Priory into the community at Glenstal Abbey? If not, why not? If you resign, and when the new Abbot of Glenstal is elected, would you recommend any members of the Silverstream community to the new Ordinary of Glenstal Abbey?

With prayerful best wishes,

+ Pat Buckley

Another ghost written letter. Where will this ghost writtenetter end up? Since Pat has my authority of any juridical or canonical arure and is just a private citizen, he shoukd bro g his concerns to the civil authorities. There are very serious allegations being made in a menacing way, almost as a way of threatening havoc on the livelihoods of all monks. I believe Pat’s appropriating unto himself divine status is both dangerous and unfortunate because he is being helped by a ghost writer to piece the infirmation together and it is embellished for shock effect. While we can accept some activities are unacceptae and must be confronted, harsh, unproven judgments which may have serious consequences are being recklessly thrown around. The motivation behind this vendetta is not so much a discovery of truth but to wholly embarrass the former and present Bishops of Meath, the Abbot of Glenstal,
Mt. Mellary and the entire Silverstream community. Pat has no shortage of enemies to help him achieve his goals. There is a threatening tone in this missive sent to Abbot Brendan that he should report Pat for unnecessary intrusion, harrassment and lies. A previous issue was supposedly brought to Norma Foley. I emailed her office to explain the back and forth allegations being made
on this blog and cautioned her to read all the crazy blogs being written at the time to ensure she was aware of “agendas” being pursued in vindictive ways. I shall do so again this very day sometime. Now I’m off to hospital work….May God bless all health care workers and chaplains and a the sick we enciunter. May God also bless and heal the corrupting hearts whose aim is to humiliate ignominiously all denounced and cindemned monks. Bring them to the public square…

I would advise Schneider and Vigano to adopt a smaller focus. I urge on Burke and Kwasniewski the joy of agnostic living. The Abourjailies never act alone.

If the man in the corner shop is a few bob short, he stays in the nick a long time, because it’s not political. Was it others than Pat who reported to VAT, charities et al? The bigger and more complicated, perhaps it’s unethical for the public to report. “Too complicated for me” like Ps 131 assures us, “over our lowly heads”. When will laity learn to stop caring about visitation standards (in any country)? As for schools, it’s cutting edge (designer frisson) to have a “mysterious community” in proximity. This is October 2021 now? I think 4.14 has failed to detect the yawn factor all round,

May I ask why Dr Deenihan’s PhD is referred to in brackets on this blog as having been awarded by the University of Hull? This is not usual practice outside a strictly academic register, so should I infer that the intention is to pour scorn on a degree from a well-respected established university? This is not in the same category as “Dr” Ian Paisley.

Like

Quite right, 9.50, Hull is a fine, respected university and a PhD from their will be well earned.

Dear Mister 4:14,
You are barely literate. I’m sure Norma Foley, education minister, was impressed by your written intervention.
Also, way to “virtue signal” about working in healthcare. That was an important and entirely relevant piece of information for the topic at hand.

10.17 & 12.31: My comment escaped before I corrected it. I realised it is messy but my points are salient. I actually received an acknowledgement from the minister’s secretary when I forewarned her about an expected email re: Roscrea Monastery. We each have to be careful about allegations we make and ensure we are not depending on hearsay, gossip and mendacious innuendo. The truth about corruption, wrongdoing, potential abuse opportunities, theft or any moral transgressions and financial criminality must be named clearly, proof privided and reported to relevant authorities. We cannot be judge, jury and ececutioner on a blog. Never. Now, I must get some rest after an early start!

In calling them “personalised” Meath is admitting Rome doesn’t have a known rule book any more. While I thought the support of some of the public for it unwise, I totally disagree with Meath’s implying they weren’t entitled to complain to Deenihan which they obviously were. Apparently senior characters know rather a lot about hazardous situations, in at least three countries, impacting my acquaintances and arguably aren’t helping out enough, even if one doesn’t believe in Rome any more. In saying this I’m commenting on a situation of Meath’s public creating.

Ampleforth, Downside, Fort Augustus, Belmont, Ealing, Buckfast -in fact most of the monasteries in the ECB have some pretty sordid backstories. So, I am not in the slightest surprised that the same picture is replicated in Ireland, and no doubt in many other monasteries around the world. These are quiet and out of the way places, isolated from public gaze most of the time, and with their own secluded community and culture. No wonder strange things emerge from these kinds of places. For so long they have been able to remain hidden, dealing with their own issues, and keeping quiet about what is going on. It is only because of the litany of criminal and abuse cases that have been unearthed that we have begun to get a glimpse of what has been going on That took some prising out of them. I am very content for + Pat to continue in this vein and keep asking the awkward questions that he is asking. These people need to be kept on their toes and it is no bad think that they are being watched and surveilled. We can’t trust them to take care of themselves. They will just revert to the old playbook of lies, duplicity, lack of transparency, dishonesty, coverup and dysfunction. So, + Pat, keep it up. They would very much like a quiet life, but don’t give it to them. They are not to be trusted.

Just one point of fact: ALL of the EBC monasteries are mired in crime and two of them have elected subsequently convicted abusers as abbot.

Well, they mostly had schools, and were trying to ape the English public school system and trying to be posh and toff. Getting buggered at school amongst that class is seen as a rite of passage and something you didn’t blub about. Well, it caught up with them eventually. Hume will have come from that culture. English Catholic posh, tolerant of behind the scenes sodomy and buggery, and sliding effortlessly and languidly on. Would you send your son to Ampleforth or anywhere like that ? I’m afraid all these places deserve their much reviled reputation, and I think a lot of people have learned to steer clear of them. Most of their schools are closing, and it will be only a matter of time before they all close or are handed over to non-monk control and management. And a wall built between monastery and school, as has happened at Ampleforth. There, a monk wandering in to the school premises is sufficient to raise a safeguarding concern. Imagine being automatically seen as a threat ? But, that is how monks (and priests for that matter) are viewed these days by people. They only have themselves to blame for it. Even the innocent ones – they didn’t do anything about what was happening around them for decades. Claiming they didn’t know anything was amiss is like the German nation after WW2 saying they hadn’t a clue what Hitler and the Nazis were up to ! Incroyable !

I was a novice at Buckfast back in the early 90’s. Both my novice masters where convicted and imprisoned followed by another monk later on. It truly was an awful place and the community really didn’t like one another. I can’t imagine it’s any better under Charlesworth.

A recently deceased
monk should have been laiciesd for the openly gay lifestyle he lead whilst living in various parishes. He also sexually assaulted a vistor in Avilla House where he was housemaster.

A fellow novice was packed off to Quarr after solemn profession by Chubsworth after sexually harrassing a local married male GP and a junior tried forcing himself on me after barging his way into my cell after compline one Sunday night and Abbot Leo did nothing when I reported it. I left within a week was given £600 and a glowing reference which I thought very odd.

+ Pat, it is as clear as night follows day that you have not written your blogs since you went to Canada. Your “ghost writer” is a sharp and astute individual, who uses provocative prose with great skill. From the style I think it is the same individual who penned your reply to Bishop Keenan in Paisley. At that time you suggested the individual was a lawyer. Am I correct?

Like

10.07: Pat, of course, uses the skills of a lawyer for all his emails and letters to the bishops and monks.

That’s not accurate. I blogged alone on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. I collaborated with “the other” on Wednesday, Thursday and today. The other is indeed a lawyer.

“Can. 637 The autonomous monasteries mentioned in can. 615 must render an account of their administration to the local ordinary once a year. Moreover, the local ordinary has the right to be informed about the Financial reports of a religious house of diocesan right.”

“Other concerns focused on the monastery’s failure to present annual accounts to Silverstream’s chapter for approval.”
The financial matters must be dealth with by the diocese?
The diocese have said; “personalised and serious charges published online concerning the monastic community and its members and, in justice, the diocese cannot respond as there are ongoing investigations by canonical and civil authorities”.
This serious matter must be dealth with by the diocese?

Like

It seems to me that Deenihan wanted to pass the buck to the authorities, a very common tactic by bishops and superiors now. I’m so doing, he can say “The diocese could not possibly comment on Father X due to ongoing investigations”. Then, if Father X is charged, he can feign ignorance about what Father was doing and point to the fact that he reported it. Very shrewd.

10.41″ You say, “it seems..”..That’s a colloquial for hearsay. Not sufficient evidence for proof. A silly proposition.

What about poor little dicky Purcell? Another fine mess he has gotten himself into. The only thing missing from the visitation was hop along Malachy Thompson. This would have been the full outfit of clowns if he has been part of it. Maybe the clinking whiskey bottles in malachy’s luggage would have been a problem. They have access to the monastery money, the abbot has car, credit card and cash. They can not be questioned. Why has Purcell be able to do what he has been doing? Thompson has a similar tendency to flee the monastic walls for 2-3 days at a time. We all have different tastes and needs.

There was a foul-mouthed, aggressive alkie monk in Ealing in the 1990s called Gregory Chilmann (I think that’s the spelling). He had a ready supplybof alcohol and was drunk all day, every day. The other monks hated him. David Pearce was in his pomp at the time. David is probably out of gaol now.

Like

Thanks, 5.33pm. Jonathan West did excellent work. Gregory took a particular dislike to an oblate, who somehow had become resident in the abbey and wore the habit. Gregory used to roar at him down the corridors. I was a houseman for only a short time, when I was between jobs. It was demeaning work, with the monks treating you like servants, which is what we were, I suppose. It was an unhappy house in my time. The Glastonbury monks were in the novitiate and Rossiter was the novice master and kept the novices under close watch and more or less living entirely separately from the other monks. It was a wealthy house, too.

Like

Gregory Chillman died last year. He was an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed Scottish alcoholic who had been headmaster of the senior school for less than a year in the 1980s. He was hated by the other monks and by the lay staff.
Soper the Abbot wafted about with a pious air, despite having been a perve and a sadist in the school and later he went “on the run”.
Rossiter, who had been abbott of Ealing before becoming titular head of the EBC was novice master. The novitiate and juniorate in those days was populated by handsome young men.

According to information from the Vatican, Francis will announce the names of new cardinals at the Angelus next Sunday. Likely contenders include Victor Manuel Fernan-dez of La Plata, a protégé of Francis and in the first years of the pontificate his ghost writer , Archbishop Carlos Castillo of Lima, Archbishop Luis José Rueda Aparicio of Bogota and Archbishop Michel Aupetit from Paris to to name just a few. As a possible “typical bergoglianische provocation” the name of the US Jesuit James Martin is being passed around.
