FR GERARD QUIRKE ABANDONING TUAM AFTER THREE YEARS FOR LATIN PFC P.

GERARD QUIRKE has announced that he is leaving Tuam after three years to join a Latin Mass outfit!

He was only ordained for Tuam in 2018.

This time last year, Tuam was celebrating his 30th birthday with him and praising him as their youngest priest.

Now he is leaving them.

THE PRIESTLY FRATERNITY OF SAINT PETER

wiki

The FSSP consists of priests and seminarians who intend to pursue the goal of Christian perfection according to a specific charism, which is to offer the Mass and other sacraments according to the Roman Rite as it existed before the liturgical reforms that followed the Second Vatican Council. Thus, the fraternity uses the Roman Missal, the Roman Breviary, the Pontifical (Pontificale Romanum), and the Roman Ritual in use in 1962, the last editions before the revisions that followed the Council.

The 2007 motu proprio Summorum Pontificum had authorized use of the 1962 Roman Missal by all Latin Rite priests as an extraordinary form of the Roman Rite without limit when celebrating Mass “without a congregation”.  Its use for Mass with a congregation was allowed with the permission of the priest in charge of a church for stable groups attached to this earlier form of the Roman Rite, provided that the priest using it was “qualified to do so and not juridically impeded” (as for instance by suspension). That was abrogated by the 2021 motu proprio Traditionis custodes that emphasized deference towards the Missal of Pope St. Paul VI and added restrictions to which clergy could perform the Roman Rite according to the pre-Vatican II form.

Following from its charism, the fraternity’s mission is twofold: to sanctify each priest through the exercise of his priestly function, and to deploy these priests to parishes. As such, they are to celebrate the sacraments, catechise, preach retreats, organize pilgrimages, and generally provide a full sacramental and cultural life for lay Catholics who are likewise drawn to the rituals of the 1962 missal. In order to help complete its mission, the fraternity has built its own seminaries with the goal of forming men to serve the fraternity.

PFSP FOUNDED BY 18 FORMER MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY OF ST PIUS X

The society was founded in 1988 under the leadership of 12 priests who were formerly members of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), another traditionalist organization, but were unwilling to remain part of it following the Écône consecrations, which resulted in its bishops being excommunicated by the Holy See.

Headquartered in Switzerland, the society maintains two international seminaries: the International Seminary of St. Peter in WigratzbadOpfenbachBavaria, Germany, and Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in Denton, Nebraska, United States. The society is officially recognized by the Holy See and its priests celebrate the Tridentine Mass in locations in 124 worldwide dioceses.

PAT SAYS:

These Latin Mass societies should be totally and immediately suppressed by Francis and the Vatican.

Their foundation and continuation is a direct attack on Vatican II and the intentions of the council fathers as regards the celebration of the Mass in the vernacular.

Benedict XVI and others tolerated these latin dinosaurs when they should have been resisted and now they have a firm hold and are running another church alongside the Vatican II church.

Furthermore, they are taking vocations away from dioceses and parishes.

I’m surprised Michael Neary is allowing Quirke to abandon the diocese he was ordained for to join up with these bunch of nutcases.

What about the Tuam money soent on his training?

He should gave been forced to do at least 10 years of service in Tuam before indulging in this fantasy.

Were I his bishop I would have given him a firm NO and told him to serve Tuam or apply for laicization.

The priesthood is primarily one of pastoral service.

Not a way of indulging liturgical fantasies.

Well done to Fr Gerard for standing for tradition. He is the 2nd young priest to join the FSSP. He has my full support. The dying 1970s boomers will be gone soon. Traditional movement is the fastest growing movement in Ireland with 10 seminarians this year (and you a new priest!!)

Alex,
You are confusing ‘traditional’ and ‘traditionalist.’ The former is the living faith of the dead; the latter the dead faith of the living according to a well-known Romanian historian of religion.

The traditional movement has a vibrant living faith, it has well funded chapels and 60% more vocations in Ireland that all the Dioceses/religious communities. Like it or not traditional movement is the future here.

We’ll be kind and say that it was just over thinking and not some kind of insanity. “The nature of blessedness has been much discussed by many people; but why should we go to many people and much explanation? In the scripture of God it is put briefly and truly: Blessed is the people whose God is the Lord.” When it comes to prayer and liturgy we will always be hard put to improve on what we’re given by our Christian heritage.

Can Archbishop Neery really do anything if a priest wants to leave the diocese. He could of course say no, but what’s to stop a priest saying to him I don’t want to be a priest anymore and demand to be laicised or whatever happens in such situations. And then after a short while head off and join the group he is about to join. I don’t know can a person be ordained a second time if he decided that he no longer wanted to be a priest in a diocese and later joined a community. Perhaps you can answer this Pat if you know the answer.
In relation to serving ten years and paying back what was spend on him while he was in seminary, the idea sounds good but is it workable. How many men have gone into the seminary and decided after maybe four or five years, maybe even sooner were to decide that the life of a priest was not for him. Should he have to pay back the percent that you suggest that went into his studies from the Diocese. Or maybe he was to go on to be ordained and maybe a short few years later decide that the priesthood was not for him. Maybe the Bishop of his Diocese made the mistake in making him a curate with a difficult Parish Priest. I know you have had some difficult Parish Priests in your own years as a Curate. Maybe he might feel the only way out would be to leave the priesthood rather than to ask for a transfer and maybe risk been put with another difficult Parish Priest.
Like you I feel that Pope Francis who I believe to be a good man should suppress the Latin Mass as soon as possible. I know of a number of people who record the Mass each day off the RTE News Channel and watch it at a time that suits them, when home helps etc have left their homes. But sometimes the mass does not start at the appointed 10-30am and therefore part or all of it does not record for them. I know some when this happen turn on the mass at 1pm or 6pm on EWTN and they have told me that it is very annoying that many if not all the priests celebrate the mass from the Our Father to the distribution of Holy Communion in Latin and have said they thought this sort of thing was done away with nearly 60 years ago. They have said they did not understand it then and certainly don’t understand it now.

There is an Armagh priest on the verge of announcing his departure to this same Fraternity of St Peter. All formation costs spent by dioceses on these charlatan priests should now be met by the Fraternity of St Peter and each diocese reimbursed by them. This was the case of Fr Connolly, albeit different, when he moved to Meath diocese from Clogher and Meath reimbursed Clogher £50,000. Herr Ratzinger allowed this carry on and encouraged it. He also gave us the ex Anglican Ordinariate nonsense.

The FSSP have a signed 1988 agreement that they would always be allowed to retain the traditional Latin mass with fully canonical status. I have noticed a trend, that the younger the Catholic priest, the more likely they are far more traditionalist, right wing and prefer the liturgy from before the Second Vatican Council changes.
To give some examples, a certain Father Declan McGeehan from the Diocese of Derry, who insulted Anglicans on Twitter by stating he agreed the position of Pope Leo XIII called Anglican clergy as “null and void” – all down to the Anglican Church celebrating 25 years of the first ordinations of women as priests back in 2019. He got a severe ticking off by Bishop McKeown, which included a temporary closing of his Twitter account, of course until the matter was forgotten, and then McKeown allowed him to go back on Twitter, thinking everyone had forgotten – they didn’t.
Father McGeehan is certainly not liked in the Derry Diocese. He comes across as a pompous young brat of a priest, who thinks since he wears a vestment, and dresses up in the old style way that priests dressed, that he has power and authority – in reality he is a lowly curate, who is despised by many parishioners.
Some younger priests in the Diocese of Derry who love dressing up in the old style Catholic frocks and vestments – including the returning Father Peter O’Kane, who chose to leave the diocese and become a Dominican monk – but in the 2021 diocese changes, was ordered back into diocesan ministry by Bishop McKeown.
One priest of the Derry Diocese, in his early 30s, actually said to a parishioner whilst they were on a rosary procession against abortion said that he smelt evil as they passed the abortion advice centre in Belfast. He “smelt evil” – I wonder if he has a good nose for smelling the evil among his own clergy, filled with hypocrites?
However, older priests seems to be far more happier with the modern liturgy, indeed I have been told the retired clergy who serve in Derry, are far more liberal and inclusive in their manner, than any priest under the age of 40.
What is the fixation of these young men, who adore the pre Second Vatican Council ways? Is it that they like dressing up more?

Wasn’t there a convention that you paid back the cost of your training by five years of service?

The priesthood is primarily abiut service, you say Pat. Very true. But service is expressed in a myriad of ways and ministries. Your bias is so evident against the Confraternity that you have such disdain for, almost to the point of apoplectic angst. Your views and way of living are very self serving. While you offer much that is good I am left aghast that almost anything that is different to your life, understanding, liturgy and theology causes you to be arrogantly dismissive and judgmental against many. Pat, allow Fr. Quirke to follow his spiritual pathway without the unnecessary, unjust sarcasm and contempt you display. I have never been to the Oratory and do not know who and how many followers – priests – you have but no discernible difference is evident in our landscape by way of renewal, reform or spiritual blessings…much like the Church you abandoned. May God bless Fr. Quirke always. You offer valuable criticism but you also offer so much nasty discouragement as you have little capacity to affirm good and goodness in Catholic clerics!

Like

There is so much that is venal, self-indulgent, ‘look at me’ about this move of Quirke to the FSSP. In my experience, that pretty much defines so many clergy, especially the young priests who are being produced by our seminaries, who come out thinking they are God’s gift with an elevated sense of their own importance and everybody else’s deference to them. Quirke’s bishop should have faced him down with some harsh truths – like how much it has cost to train him for the diocese, about the promises he made to the bishop and the people and the diocese, about the duty of service – rather than rolling over and letting this guy go off on his lace and frills fantasy trip. I know a number of young priests who are engineering exits for themselves from the coalface of the diocese and the parish in to more “interesting’, ‘sector’ ministries, especially those that offer lucrative salaries. I think it’s an indication of how so many young priests view the priesthood as a personal vehicle for advancement, where they are owed everything, and do not owe anything back in return. I don’t see why some sort of contract could not be drawn up for the newly ordained that obliges them to stay in a diocese for say 10 or 15 years ? It happens in lots of other organisations which have paid for the education of employees. Such would also let these young Bucks (although for the most part they are Does !) know that it is not all about them, and perhaps make them reflect on the true nature of service that should accompany the priesthood.

It would be intriguing to hear about the long process of discernment which lead Father to conclude that what the people of Achill and wherever else he was needed was the ritual of 1962.
What was it about a ritual where the members of the congregation are silent observers of the priest speaking sotto voce in a language most of them, including the priest, do not understand, which convinced him this was the one thing the church needed in 2021?

You make a very valuable point. The vast majority of priests who have been ordained in the past decade who celebrate the TLM have extremely poor Latin and, it can be cringing to watch them celebrate. They do, God love them do their best, but they continuously fail to recognise that liturgy is the participation in the salvific work of Christ.
I disagree with + Pat that these organisations should be immediately suppressed. But I agree with him when he expresses in a somewhat roundabout way that their existence today has become a direct attack on Vatican II and its liturgical reforms.
Archbishop Neary is coming up to retirement, so he does not care, but there is an interesting question about reimbursing the archdiocese for his academic formation, because it is not cheap.

Along with that goes an expectation of entitlement, deference, exceptionalism, unaccountability – and we know where all that has got us in the past. His interest in lace and frills and brocade and Latin is just a little titillating and entertaining sideline, which also has elements of homoeroticism thrown in for good measure. It’s a potent and dangerous mix, both for him and for those around him. I simply don’t understand why bishops can’t force these guys to settle down, do some hard work, stop being so special, and put in some years and get some experience. In any other walk of life that is what happens. I am sure all this FSSP stuff will come to no good, and the boy will be back with his tail between his legs. The mass doesn’t, nor should it ever, pay reverence to the people. It doesn’t matter what the congregation do or do not understand.
The role of the laity is to shut their mouths, open their souls and mediate on the crucifixion and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour for their own salvation

Mediate? Really? There’s only one mediator.
Your first principles are flawed. The purpose of the Mass is twofold: glorification of God and sanctification of humanity. If they do not understand that principle they are not being sanctified. And if the downward movement of the Mass fails so does the upward.
You’ve misunderstood everything.

I meant meditate, and apologise for autocorrect.
Then again, you ought to have been intelligent enough to have known that.

Englishman Henry Baulkwell was single handedly responsible for the expulsion of ‘the rigid-six’ for all the right reasons.
A total hero and Quirke’s polar opposite
Gerald Quirke bullshitted his way through Maynooth and Henry called him out on it.
You should track Henry down if he’s still alive. He knows Quirke’s most embarrassing secrets.
He was a softly spoken but intelligent lay brother who made it known disliked the maynooth camp culture.
He told the seminary his concerns about quirke and they promptly asked Gerald to leave with immediate affect. His bishop forced the seminary to welcome him back and ordained him.

Who has egg on his archiepiscopal face now? There’s plenty more of it there since the Tony Flannery debacle.

I’m crying with laughter over the comments today.
Highlights are saying that the church will be rebuilt contingent on and wanting the baby boomers dead.
Obviously this is a really positive mindset with which to build.
And then we have the groundless assertion that this nutty cult is flourishing. Based on 46 first years.
So we have people who want other people dead and can’t work out the true significance of that figure.
Gee it’s almost like the church is dead. 🤣

Patrick, it has to be said. Your position on tradition in the church, in spite of all you have seen, is deeply surprising and depressing.
To stand with Bergoglio is an attack on the Church Fathers themselves. You cannot stand with Church doctrine yet claim those not in communion with the Church or Christ will be saved.
Your opinion is dangerous and is sacrificing souls on the alter of modernism.
I humbly and sincerely ask you to reconsider, and I pray for your return to the one true faith

Ah bless ya – someone holds a view at variance with yours and the best you can do is spew forth venom and bile.
Having looked after terminally ill people for many years I can assure you that I’d rather hold the hand of a caring nurse or Heath care professional on my death bed than let a Catholic priest anywhere nr me with his box of tricks and mimbo jumbo which he doesn’t even believe and v likely isn’t faithful to his vow.
God is bigger than the sacraments and his grace falls like the rain on the righteous and unrighteous.
Your faith fosters malice and your faith in the efficacy of sacramental grace is predicated on the. idol of priest worship and a false belief that the RCC had captured Gods grace like a commodity to dispense.

“Furthermore, they are taking vocations away from dioceses and parishes.” This quote is quite sad, you sound like a tantrum child who is not getting his way. If a man prefers the Traditional rite, the Mass in which most saints were born out of, let him go. You can try to force your hippie, free mason mass down people’s throats all you want, but no one is interested. You have lied to all of us and we’re all discovering the truth, abortion, gender, N.O., freemasons, your agenda, etc. We’re done. We don’t want it anymore!
