SHOCKING RTE PROGRAMNE ON TUAM BABIES.

Tuesday night’s RTE programme on the buried children of Tuam was a shocking summary of what we know to date.

But the buck stops with the Bon Secour nuns who ill-treated and starved those babies to death before storing their poor little bodies in a sewerage tank.

The buck also stops with the Archdiocese of Tuam in whose territory this holocaust took place.

The following must now happen:

1. The Irish government must now put a commission of archaeologists, medics and lawyers in charge of the whole operation. Catherine Corless must me a vital part of that commission and perhaps chairperson.

2. All others, especially any Catholic Church person or their lackies, must be kept totally away from this investigation to stop them interfering – as is their way.

3. All the bodies must be carefully removed and taken to a secure and respectful location where the work of reassembling all individual babies must take place.

4. A full report should be prepared on each little baby and a huge effort made to identify them from DNA, birth certificates, death certificates etc.

5. Where possible every effort should me made to discover and approach any family members of the baby and give them full information on their deceased little relative.

6. When the work is over a solemn and impressive monument should be erected in Tuam naming all the children who perished in the Catholic Concentration Camp in Tuam.

7. The state should call a national day of mourning for the victims and a State ceremony of Remembrance should be held. All Catholic bishops, priests and religious should be banned from being present at this ceremony.

8. New legislation should be brought in to be able to charge any individual Tuam nun still living alongside legislation to charge the Bon Secour order and Tuam Archdiocese with corporate manslaughter.

Interesting. I met a lawyer recently who said the Church is overwhelmed with section 15 Subject Access Requests. Most institutions and companies find them a colossal waste of their time as you can’t charge for them – they observed the RC Church has deep pockets and pays for them to respond to each one. Nice little earner, which will soon eat up the little auld ladies offerings.

The full truth of the Tuam Mother and Baby Home has yet to be revealed. We have information already but some historians, commentators and professional bodies seem a little sceptical of the evidence to date. The full truth is absolutely necessary. None of the nuns who worked there are alive as I understand. The Order must still express an opinion and contribute more to any redress funds or to any monument. I believe they want to do more but they have to co-operate with government agencies. Apart from the nuns, we have to accept that many people knew what happened and said nothing, county councillors, politicians, medics, the government, the western health board..We must have the full and complete truth as soon as possible. Today Minister Gorman said excavation will begin sometime in 2022: for God’s sake, why the delay? Perhaps uncomfortable truths will be alleged against some high profile people! Even the report into the “Grace” abuse investigation is horrendous and present day ministers knew and know the truth but won’t act or respond to legitimate questions being asked. Fianna Fail TD, John McGuinness was powerful in the Dail re: this report. Similar strong voices must be heard about the Tuam Scandal and scandals of present times. All who were/are responsible for running these homes – religious or health boards in some cases have left a painful, distressing and traumatic legacy. For now families and relatives grieve. While you Pat, may want to whip clerics and religious into sewers, these people must have imput into what a Remembeance Day might be like. We may have to establish a truth and reconciliation committee to initiate a journey of truth, healing and justice. All relevant personnel must contribute to this. I am saddened that the Bin Secours did not become more priactive when this story broke. I know some of these nuns and they have worked brilliantly in hospitals in our country and in Peru and other missions. They are a very fine order of teaching and nursing sisters. but the Tuam Banies blights all their other good work. Let’s phone our public representatives..

Nevertheless if the nuns are dead they will have faced ‘Judgement Day’ and I would not want to have been in their shoes.

It’s very hard to hear and believe the way this Religious Congregation in Tuam behaved towards these woman and children. My Aunt was a Daughter of Charity in North William St. I loved going their with my Granny where I was spoiled altogether by the Sisters.

Like

Pat it was the parents of the women that sent their daughters to these homes that committed the torture. If they were not so snobbish about a daughter who would have got pregnant than it would not have happened. All around the country there are young women who got pregnant but were not sent to these homes and I say well done to the families who done this. I know there was a stigma about unmarried mothers at the time, but some of those parents raised their grandson or granddaughter as one of their own children.

Extreme views and proposals. Let the babies rest. There is a fine balance of doing the right and appropriate actions. I was a home baby and if I was buried that cemetery, I most certainly would not want my remains reassembled or my name engraved on an impressive monument. The simple but profound act of being remembered in prayer is significant. I do not want this to be a political circus, and I suggest Ms. Corless donates the royalties of her book to charity.

I would respectfully request the nuns and the state to contribute their monies instead of Ms Corless royalties instead.

Cos Ms Corless did her bit re her work. Now it’s high time for the nuns and the state including Galway County Council to do something constructive instead of arguing or dragging it on or kicking the can down the road further.

Cos it was they who started first and must finish it now before anyone else including their monetary contributions as well.

8.20: You are right to some extent. But what I would prefer is that people like Pat would stop abusing facts and information to suit his vitriolic agenda against the Church. He uses and abuses tragedies to promote a viciousness and nastiness of commentary against Church personnel. He embellishes on bits of information, thus reabusing survivors all over again. If it is his wish that all clerics be thrown aside in any commemoration ceremony, he too should keep his mouth shut. He is not a saviour.

I don’t think the successors of the child torturers should have any place at a Remembrance ceremony.

Thank you, Pat, for drawing attention to these documentary films about places like Tuam for without your willingness to distribute such material we Irish living outside Ireland would be unaware of the current Irish government attempts to hide the evidence of Church abuse. The government is not willing to hand over the evidence of details that individuals experienced, even though the irish electorate has rejected Catholic social policy. I do not agree with your theological views, but I commend your honesty in broadcasting these stories of Catholic abuse.

Virginity and Celibacy are cloaks or masks they deceive and hide cruelty, sadism, homosexuality and lesbianism (many if not most nuns are lesbians) and egregious criminality.
A proud Catholic is deceived there is nothing to be proud of – the Tuam baby scandal combined with the child abuse scandal and cover up expose a dark criminality in the dark heart of Catholicism.

I feel no shame for expressing my view – priestly celibacy manifestly contributes to a culture of hypocrisy and active homosexuality whilst masquerading as virtue and vocation – and I couldn’t think of a more egregious crime and cruelty than the discarding into a sewer without a burial rite of over 1000 babies – the roots of this kind of sadism lies in the imposition of involuntary celibacy and repressed sexuality.
Just as most clergy are repressed homosexuals so too most nuns are unhappy lesbians.
I think what you object to is the veracity and Occam’s razor like nature of the analysis because the truth hurts and can be revolting but it also heals and liberates.

You should try it!!

4.41: More No verifiable facts and commentary. Way over the top and very embellished. Yes, I believe clericalism has produced much, much harm and almost irreparable hurt on too many people, including on many priests. That is why I keep very close contact with balanced, well adjusted and good priest colleagues. We express truth to one another. The connection too with parishioners is also very helpful in remaining grounded. Sir, I am as grounded in reality, my humanity, priesthood, ministry, relationships – perhaps in ways more than you. Thanks to a wise spiritual director and a wonderful therapist who both guide me caringly. I thank God for the incredible religious men and women who provided education for my family in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. They provided great education and many of them worked sacrificially for those in their educational care. Excellent role models. I spent 4 years in boarding school and they were happy days. The brothers sought to give us all opportunities in music, languages, sport, art, science and religious knowledge. These men and women certainly blessed my family in many ways. Sadly, some religioys acted contrary to their sacred vows. Credit where and when it’s due is of absolute importance, not the runaway negative, lying narrative you present. Try TRUTH.

While we would all say that it was wrong to bury/dump children in a septic tank, I wonder if we are getting the full facts of what happened in Tuam.

If the nuns buried the children tank or had someone bury them in the tank for them, I and I am sure everyone else hope on the day of judgement they burn in the fire’s of hell.

But if they did not bury them there or had someone bury them on their behalf I hope this comes out sooner rather than later and that all who have judged the nuns in the media and elsewhere issue an immediate apology for their actions.

It is for some reason very hard to find an overhead photograph of the burial ground. It is even harder to find a photo of the area prior to the houses built around the burial ground as we know it now.

I would love to know are the bodies in the tank dumped in it or if they are laid out in a certain way. If they are just dumped in I would love to know is there a possibility that the bodies could be buried out further than where they are now, and moved in, possibly dumped into the tank(s) by machines possibly after they were found in excavation work carried out for the houses built maybe in the late 1950’s/1960’s and 1970’s. The backs of the houses which appear in the photo of the ground would appear to be from this era.

I would love to know when bodies first were buried in the area. I ask this because in many parts of Ireland there would not be need for septic tanks until maybe the 70’s and 80’s as many houses would not have had indoor or even outdoor toilets back much further. I know of people in different parts of Ireland who still had a bucket under the bed to do their business up to this point and if they had to go during the day they often went behind the fence of a field. Maybe as Tuam is a Urban area the nuns may have had indoor toilets and therefore the use of a tank. And even in Urban areas would it not be the case that all the buildings in an area would be plumbed into one central tank run by and maintained by the council.

To me Catherine Corless has since she became known by the media come across as an angry woman, maybe with a lifetime, certainly a long hatred for Nuns and the Catholic Church. Sadly within the media with 20 years, maybe a little longer you will find that there is some with an agenda to bring down Religion. To me it seems that some in the media have bought into what Catherine Corless has to say. They will ask/talk to her about what she wants to say, but I have yet to hear/read about anyone in the media about what could have happened at Tuam as opposed to what did happen according to Catherine Corless.

Like

Dear “Brother “, your comment seems to portray an effort towards objectivity, but, taken as a whole, seems rather more an attempt at deflection: deflection of blame away from the nuns, RCC, and the state authorities involved.
I have been impressed with Catherine Corless’s sincere efforts to throw light on this shameful period. What you interpret as anger for nuns and church seems to bear resemblance to what Christians refer to as Christ’s justified anger at the temple moneychangers.

Like

9.05: You are right. Catherine Corless has scripted her own story. Some of it may be true but not all of it is. She has occasionally rowed back a little from her own conclusions. She has said different things over time. I admire her for her concern for any child that was “thrown” into a septic tank but much of her story raises questions about accuracy. She has removed herself from anything and everything Catholic.
