FRANCIS GIVES BISHOPS 8 BEATITUDES TO LIVE BY

  • “Blessed is the bishop who makes poverty and sharing his way of life, so that by his witness he is building up the kingdom of heaven.
  • “Blessed is the bishop who is not afraid of tears streaming down his face, so that in them may be mirrored the pains of the people, the hard work of priests, finding God’s consolation in the embrace with those who suffer.
  • “Blessed is the bishop who considers his ministry a service and not power, making meekness his strength, giving everyone the right to hold citizenship in his heart, to inhabit the land promised to the meek.
  • “Blessed is the bishop who does not shut himself up in the palaces of governance, who does not become a bureaucrat who is more attentive to statistics than to faces, to procedures than to stories, who is seeking to fight alongside humanity for God’s dream of justice because the Lord, encountered in the silence of daily prayer, will be his nourishment.
  • “Blessed is the bishop who has a heart for the misery of the world, who is not afraid to dirty his hands with the mud of the human soul in order to find God’s gold, who is not scandalized by the sin and frailty of others because he is aware of his own misery, so that the gaze of the Risen Crucified One will be a seal of infinite forgiveness for him.
  • “Blessed is the bishop who banishes duplicity of heart, who avoids every ambiguous dynamic, who dreams of the good even in the midst of evil, because he will be able to rejoice in God’s countenance, discovering his reflection in every puddle of the city of mankind.
  • “Blessed is the bishop who works for peace, who accompanies journeys of reconciliation, who sows the seed of communion in the heart of the presbytery, who accompanies a divided society along the path of reconciliation, who takes every man and woman of goodwill by the hand to build fraternity: God will recognize him as his son.
  • “Blessed is the bishop who is not afraid to go against the tide for the sake of the Gospel, making his face ‘stern’ like that of Christ on his way to Jerusalem, without letting himself be held back by misunderstandings and obstacles because he knows that the kingdom of God advances in the contradiction of the world.”

PAT SAYS,

These beatitudes were not composed by Francis but he has adopted and recom ended them

The words that stand out:

POVERTY.

TRUE CLOSENNESS TO PRIESTS AND PEOPLE

HAVING A SERVICE OF MINISTRY AND NOT POWER.

NOT SHUT AWAY IN A PALACE.

BISHOP TO GET HIS HANDS DIRTY.

NO DUPLICITY.

CREATING UNITY, NOT DISUNITY.

PREPARED TO GO AGAINST THE TIDE.

How do readers feel our bishops in Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales fair in living out these beatitudes?

How do readers feel about Bishop Buckley vis a vis these Beatitudes? Discuss. My answer: Pat tries to be better than all others: sees himself as the best: doesn’t always get it right: loves his title: does some good: is basically a good person but not totally virtuous or a model of humility. He’s fragile like all of us and prine to sin and failings. These Beatitudes should be lived by all pastors and shepherds but only after EMBRACING THE ORIGINAL JESUS’ BEATITUDES…now there’s the challenge for all of us!

Never mind them, obviously Uncle Jorge, him from the Vatican City State, is too high in the echelon to be a bishop! “Ambiguous dynamic” and “citizenship” especially are to puke. The Roman church will not recover unless it abandons the sacramental system, which it has perverted.

UJ is admitting intends bishops to be doormats lorded over / sabotaged by his armada of arm twisters handlers / minders, quangoes and “movements” (a “laic” in Englewood NJ is more powerful than any bishop anywhere for example). These are allowed all the “prohibited” things. Boot (etc) licking will not make things easier for bishops unless they are my friend’s friend’s boss, who by “funny” coincidence had acquaintances in Englewood.

Ah, here I sit early in the morning at my desk, with my single estate coffee and artisan sourdough toast, and wading through this sanctimonious, fluffy, emotion laden shite from the Holy Father. Why doesn’t he just encourage the bishops to read the original Beatitudes, and to live those, rather than trying to reinvent them in his cloying, verbose and naff style ? The problem is that bishops have also been encouraged to sharpen their managerial and administrative style and skills, because if they get a decision wrong, especially those that have to do with the management of safeguarding, then they are toast under Francis. So, no wonder they have little or no time for being the kind of bishop Francis is exhorting them to be. What priest these days is able to go to his bishop and talk freely and openly, without the bishop admonishing him of all kinds of limits and exclusions and disclosures before he even begins to speak ? Bishops are not paternal bishops any more, they are managerial administrators striving to hit their KPIs. If I have a problem, or an issue, or am concerned about something, the bishop is the last person I would tell about it. Any disclosure you make to a bishop these days becomes something that is noted and minuted and used to make judgements on who you are and what you do, whether you are a problem in the making. Treat bishops like they are the Police, and be very cautious when interviewed. Get advice and get support. Don’t go in to his office alone and unprotected. That’s my experience. If I did it otherwise I probably wouldn’t still be sitting here with my single estate coffee and artisan sourdough toast !

Absolutely true. They are managers and not your father’s in Christ. Smile and “no comment” answers are best. Don’t let them try to fool you otherwise.

With @8.10am and 10.26am, you have made a rather poor, cynical comment. Francis, our teacher, has used the concept ‘Beatitude’ generically. He has written beatitudes that are entirely in harmony with but separate from those found in scripture. If you care to extend your mental capacity, you will understand this point and appreciate the Holy Father’s care for his people..

You’re mental if you think his humbleness has any idea about the Beatitudes. How can this rigid dictator pope have a clue about anything except his own very strange agenda.

Like

3.46: More fluffy thinking. The St.Matthew Beatitudes are preeminent to any rewriting of them. Pope Francis is inspiring in many ways but we are simply saying he should reiterate the First Beatitudes for all pastors.

It’s a funny thing, but you would think catholics would like the pope telling the bishops to behave themselves, but no…
The more they all go on, the more I see the point Magna Carta was trying to make.

Noel Treanor is all about money and trips abroad. He is not connected to his diocese, most haven’t a clue who he is, like the protocol. The local priest is much the same, 4 trips this year in the middle of a pandemic, he’s taking his lead clearly from the boss. Wouldn’t bend over backwards for his parishioners, but put a twink in front of him and I’m sure he would do more than that.

Blessed is the priest who considers his ministry a service and not power, well if Jesus could see the power struggle going on at the minute in St Patrick’s Parish between McAleese and O’Neill he would rise from the dead again and knock these clowns out. Two faced monsters singing off different hymn sheets, but McAleese seems to be winning this battle atm as O’Neill was off sick for a while but is back again.

Defrocked Cardinal McCarrick named in sex abuse lawsuit
By DAVID PORTER

” Defrocked Cardinal Theodore McCarrick is facing another sexual abuse lawsuit, from a man who claims McCarrick abused him in the 1980s in New Jersey.
In the lawsuit filed in state court and announced Tuesday, Michael Reading alleged McCarrick engaged in sexual contact with him in 1986 while on a trip to the New Jersey shore, around the same time McCarrick ordained Reading as a priest.”

Excellent post 4:31. O’Neill allegedly harassed the two previous newly ordained curates so much that they requested moves away . Putting McAleese in that parish was a strategic move as it was common knowledge amongst the clergy that McAleese wouldn’t take any shite from bully boy O’Neill, a man who is known by his parishioners as a phoney and an actor. His only interest is in pleasing Treanor and being the big lad in St Patrick’s but people in that parish see through him with his put on accent and his falseness. Single handedly he has done extreme damage to that parish. Some parishioners have started going elsewhere. This won’t faze Noel Treanor one bit because all he cares about is himself. A very aloof and snobby man who would never get his hands dirty with the hoi polloi. D&C is in a complete mess. He has surrounded himself with sycophants who care more about getting British honours than they do, the people of the diocese. As one priest recently said to me “who cares what the pope says”. Down and Connor is a cesspit run by a hermit of a bishop dwelling in his multi million pound mansion
