MY LETTER TO CARDINAL OUELLET OF THE CONGREGATION FOR BISHOPS DENOUNCING PHONSIE CULLINANE.

Cardinal Ouellet
Phonsie

HE Marc A. Card Ouellet, PSS

Prefect. Congregation for Bishops

Palazzo della Congregazioni

00193 Roma, Piazza Pio XII, 10

1st December 2021

Death of Charles de Foucauld.

Ref: Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan, Dioecesis Vaterfordiensis et Lismoriensis.

Your Eminence,

I write following a situation that has developed in the Irish Church that is a source of great scandal among the Irish clergy and the Christifideles.

It is my understanding that allegations outlined hereinafter were brought to the personal attention of Bishop Cullinan. The matter is explained more fully in my most recent correspondence with the Abbot General of the Order of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance, Dom Eamon Fitzgerald, OCSO. A copy of same is attached for your kind consideration.

Therefore, it can be asserted with a high degree of moral certitude that the Ordinary of the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore celebrated the Eucharistic Liturgy with the knowledge and awareness that the then Abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey, Dom Richard Purcell, OCSO, was leading a notorious lifestyle, ie, having unprotected sex in the guesthouse in the house of his monastic profession, Mount St. Joseph of Abbey, (Dioecesis Laoniensis) with an ex-monk of the monastery who was incardinated in to the Diocese of Killaloe. The said ex-priest (Neil Dargan) admitted his sexual relationship with Dom Purcell. The said Dom Richard Purcell, OCSO, was also known to attend a Dublin-based gay sauna known as “The Boilerhouse”. These allegations are an open secret in the Irish Church.

The complicity of Bishop Cullinan in legitimating and by extension covering-up the known sexual misconduct of Abbot Purcell is the last straw for many loyal clergy and Christifideles in Ireland. The Irish Church is facing unprecedented challenges. However, the Irish Church is not assisted by the intemperate and ill-advised outbursts of Bishop Cullinan on matters on which he is not qualified to speak, intelligently. I would respectfully submit that his actions as outlined are a species of the worst form of institutional hypocrisy. And, they add significant credibility to a group of illiberal liberals that seek to remove the patronage of the Church in the majority of Irish schools. Inexplicably, their greatest advocate is now, Bishop Cullinan and his demonstrable Phariseeism.

Respectfully, I would ask you to bring this matter to the personal attention of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, who has made the proper behaviour of bishops and their exercise of appropriate pastoral governance one of the defining priorities of his papacy.

Finally, I am fully aware of my own irregular position in the eyes of the Holy See; but, I do believe that in the light of Your Eminence’s long and acknowledged experience, you will know that the message is the vital component; the messenger is a secondary consideration. “He who is not against us is with us”.

In light of the above, I denounce Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan to this Dicastery. Most respectfully, I request that an investigation be conducted into the allegations contained herein for the greater good of the Irish Church and by extension the Irish-based Cistercians.

In Christ,

+ Patrick Buckley

His Excellency, Archbishop Okolo, Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See to the Republic of Ireland.

ENCLOSED RECENT LETTER TO OUTGOING ABBOT GENERAL.

FITZGERALD

Mount Melleray Abbey “Regular Visitation”/Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan

Dear Dom Eamon,

Firstly, I was very sorry to read that you are dealing with the ill-effects of a serious health condition. And, regardless of whatever view you may have of me – I sincerely wish you all the best as you deal with that reality.

Secondly, you will not be surprised to read that I have serious and legitimate concerns about the recent “Visitation” at Mount Melleray Abbey. As you know with respect to the allegations made against the then Dom Richard Purcell, I acted as the facilitator on behalf of a number of individuals to ventilate and bring into the public domain the completely unacceptable behaviour of Dom Richard Purcell.

Objectively, his behaviour was wholly unacceptable and completely contrary to his freely-embraced vows as a monk and public promises as a Roman Catholic priest. As I have stated, I have no animus towards the now Fr. Purcell. But, not to challenge his behaviour in a public forum would have facilitated an on-going and known cover-up of wholly unacceptable behaviour.

Thirdly, as the source of the allegations made against Fr. Purcell, it is extraordinary and wholly unacceptable that I was not contacted or interviewed by the two Dutch-based visitators: Dom Bernardus Peeters, Abbot of Tilburg and Mother Pascale Fourmentin, Abbess of Arnhem. If, I had been contacted, I would have provided them with the names and contact details of the individuals who alleged sexual activity with the then Dom Purcell. Moreover, Dom Peeters and Mother Fourmentin might have been interested to hear the content of our conversation.

Fourthly, it is not unreasonable to speculate that Dom Peeters and Mother Fourmentin did not make contact with the ex-priest Neil Dargan, who was formerly a monk of Mount St. Joseph Abbey and a priest of the Diocese of Killaloe, who confirmed to William Mulvihill, his sexual relationship with Dom Purcell.

With the greatest possible respect to both Dom Peeters and Mother Fourmentin looking for evidence of Dom Purcell’s misbehaviour within Mount Melleray Abbey was a quixotic and naïve exercise in futility. According to Google Maps the fastest route to the Dublin-based “Boilerhouse” is 205 km from Mount Melleray Abbey. Did Dom Peeters and Mother Fourmentin visit the Boilerhouse? Because, they were never going to find any evidence of Purcell’s misconduct at Mount Melleray, and their lack of investigation makes a laughing-stock of the visitation and brings the reputation of the Cistercians into significant and legitimate disrepute. It is also a source of scandal.

In light of recent postings on my blog, I have been contacted by an individual who has provided me with important information that based on the preponderance of evidence I believe to be credible. Hence, this information begets the following observations and questions.

I have been informed that a cleric apprised the Ordinary of Waterford and Lismore, Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan about the allegations pertaining to Fr. Richard Purcell at Mount St. Joseph Abbey. I have been further informed that Bishop Cullinan bound that cleric; by invoking his solemn vow of obedience, to silence with respect to what he knew about Dom Richard Purcell. Is this true? Do you, Dom Eamon, have any information that would lend credence to this claim?

Do you know if Bishop Cullinan confronted Dom Richard Purcell about the allegations? If so, did, what was the response of Dom Richard Purcell to Bishop Cullinan?

Did Bishop Cullinan contact you [Dom Eamon Fitzgerald] in your capacity as the Abbot General of the Order of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance, prior to the installation of Dom Richard Purcell as the Abbot and Ordinary of Mount Melleray Abbey following his election? Did Bishop Cullinan express any concerns about Dom Purcell’s behaviour as the Ordinary of Mount St. Joseph Abbey? If he did, what response did you give to Bishop Cullinan?

Did you give Bishop Cullinan the same naïve assurance that you gave me [Bishop Pat Buckley], namely you believed Purcell’s behaviour was a one-off and that he had been “rehabilitated”?

If this is true, would you accept the assertion that the presence of Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan at the installation of Dom Richard Purcell as the Abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey on November 4, 2017 to celebrate a “Mass to invoke God’s blessing on the New Abbot and his Abbatial Ministry” was a cynical and deliberate attempt to deflect attention from Purcell’s known homosexual proclivities and misconduct?

It naturally follows that Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan presided over the installation of Dom Richard Purcell at Mount Melleray Abbey with the full knowledge of Dom Purcell’s known and renowned lust for the Irish and international gay scene. How do you respond to this allegation? Is it a fair approximation of the facts?

The scandal that is the cover-up of Richard Purcell’s behaviour is not going to ameliorate any time soon. And, the sham of the “regular visitation” conducted by Dom Peeters and Mother Fourmentin has made a very bad situation conspicuously worse. In fact, their so-called “visitation” has begotten more questions than answers.

As ever, because I believe transparency is good for the church, I will post this e-mail on my blog; however, if you reply with answers, and request a not to publish same, I will respect that request.

However, you need to know the people are absolutely INCENSED with real and legitimate anger, at what has happened at Mount Melleray Abbey, and they are even more OUTRAGED, by what was known by the Cistercians, and the cover-up of same.

This e-mail is being copied to Dom Peeters and Mother Fourmentin; they may wish to comment. It is also being copied to the Cardinal Prefect of the competent Dicastery, HE João Card. Bráz de Aviz. In addition, I am also copying same to the Apostolic Nuncio in Dublin, HE Archbishop Okola, he may wish to refer Bishop Cullinan and his objective and grave mishandling of this matter to the Congregation for Bishops for an independent investigation.

The Bishop Emeritus of Dromore, John McAreavey, resigned when it emerged that he knowingly celebrated the Eucharist beside a known paedophile. Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan may wish to resign when it emerges that he knowingly concelebrated beside a known sexual deviant who was masquerading as a monk and priest in good standing with the approbation of his Abbot General, i.e., you, Dom Eamon Fitzgerald.

With an assurance of heart-felt prayers for your speedy recovery, I remain,

+ Pat Buckley.

Pat, two very interesting pieces of correspondence for our reading pleasure. Your ghostwriter(s) were right to call out the Phariseeism of His Excellency the Lord Bishop of Waterford and Lismore. I like the use of Latin. Your Epistle to Dom Eamon Fitzgerald drips of cynicism. But it asks some devastating questions that deserve answers. You are right that the recent so-called visitation begets more questions than answers. This is better than any drama on TV.

Heavens above Pat! Well drafted letters. You have very talented civil and canon lawyers assisting you. Who are they? Irrespective of this, you ask very uncomfortable questions but very necessary ones. Sometimes when you belong to an institution or a company you tend not to see the rot, corruption and moral mess. It is often only when we stand outside as an independent viewer that we see the TRUTH. Many of us in ministry are very disconsolate and disturbed at the revelations. We realise the enormity of the rippling effects of such scandals. In the midst of the crises we, who are now mostly on our own and ageing, find the challenges and demands of daily ministry very overwhelming, not that it’s physically hard but trying to be relevant and meaningful is very difficult. Often the spiritual depth and emotional strength are very tested. I know there are those who will say “tough luck, you deserve it..”. The sadness is that we wish and pray for a better, renewed and open church where we can be absolutely transparent about the TRUTH OF everything and seek a better way forward for all. Now more than ever we need our wonderful parishioners to be allowed their role as key personnel to bring about renewal. Perhaps we will need a schism first!! I dislike seeming to stand on a moral pedestal as I know only too well my feet are made of clay and am well aware of how easy it is to fall, thus an honest nightly appraisal of my life is necessary before the mercy of God!

Your blog tonight has explained a few things for me. Only 2 people knew what happened in the guest house of MSJ. The revelation of that encounter has led to the unleashing of a shocking wave of fury, revenge retaliation and retribution on all associated with the Cistercians of Roscrea and Mount Mellary.. Hell hath no fury… it also explains the unusual silence of William Mulvihill over the last few days..

Can a priest as hypocritical as Phonsie is really perform a true mass.
Does the consecration actually take place?

“A true Mass?”
Of course it will be. Wasn’t Phonsie ordained? So provided he says the appropriate mumbo jumbo formula God will have to obey and get the Jesusfellah down there right sharpish.
Isn’t that what Holy Mother RCC teaches? 😉

It’s a waste of time re these letters. Oulett won’t take action thereof.
Do u remember Bishop BLING, cardinal law, both outraged the Catholics?
Bishop BLING was moved to Rome as he still works in the curia.
Vatican moved law to Rome and even housed him. Pope f did the funeral Mass of law. Vatican plus the Pope gave two fingers to Boston people. It was a brazen behaviour coming from both.
Vatican don’t care if it doesn’t affect them in any way except for money.
Now blog mentions liberals are trying to remove rcc from schools which I consider rightly cos I believed that it should be left to education authorities re handling of schools etc.
Schools gave them lots of power and lots of money. Any priest on school board, who could fire a teacher with his sayso eg gay teacher or teacher whose lifestyle at variance with Catholic schools ethos.
I’m in favour of removing rcc from their power/influence and money from schools. Let it be the schools returned to education authorities that they know what’s best for education instead in the hands of rcc.
Pat beef is phonsie cos he refused HC to him. Let it be bygone, bygone.
Let phonsie stay on as a Bishop, he would create a lot of reputational damage to rcc in coming years.
It was cisterican job to remove RP from his abbot post but AG didn’t do it. If AG couldn’t or didn’t do it, then it’s a Bishop job to step in and stop the rot.
What was interesting was that a religious cleric who reported RP to phonsie, instead of cisterican AG. So it seems that religious cleric heard it from someone as it was out in the open in rcc circles.
RP was afforded a second chance to redeem himself. Another poster mentions one priest whose name escapes me, was ordained despite his bishop knowledge.
Is that common in rcc re in BS chances and ordination or bishopric installation.🤷‍♂️.
One look at phonsie actions, does it mean other bishops out there are doing the same thing as phonsie?
2nd chances and debauchery of other cleric or religious lifestyle 🤔🤔.
It reminded me of, law, Bishop BLING, ex Bishop Conry, some few others out there that I don’t know.

Very well written Pat but I think the visitation was to convey a message to RP rather than conduct an investigation.

👆This is a classic example of damage limitation exercise done by the OSCO order, without following up the witness or whistle blowers or diocesan Bishop as regards to the TRUTH.

See that they have a very little respect to truth in order to find out more if it stacks up or not.

Is that the same cardinal who had almighty row with Mary mc Aleese?
He had tendered his resignation to gaslighter Frankie in 2019 but that Argentinan dictator (h/t to author of dictator Pope book) refused that resignation.
Cardinal Ouellet, for instance, was one of the four cardinals who, according to highly trustworthy sources, lobbied Pope Francis for the replacement of Summorum Pontificum by a new motu proprio: Traditionis Custodes(h/t to lifesitenews).
What’s the point of writing to that effing cardinal? Just saying 🤷‍♂️

More on Ouelett :
His views on how to deal with allegations of sexual abuse by clerics were also contested.
He is no stranger to the issue. One brother, Paul, was was convicted in 2009 of sexual assault involving two minors. A year ago, during a pilgimage in Ireland, he met victims of clerical child abuse and asked for forgiveness on behalf of the church.
Re Ouelett’s brother :
In 2009, Paul Ouellet was convicted of sexual abuse of two underage girls during the 1980s. He pleaded guilty to having improper sexual relationships with the girls when they were reportedly as young as 13 and 14. He was in his late 30s and early 40s. He was sentenced to 15 months of community detention.

So many people will have known about Purcell’s behaviour which was in stark contrast and contradiction to his public profession. This will not just have included the ex AG of the OCSOs and + Cullinane. I think we have already established that these men, and others in the hierarchy of dioceses and the OCSOs, knew sufficient to have an understanding of what Purcell was up to. It appears from some comments from yesterday that members of the monastic community at Mt Melleray will have likewise had some clue as to what Purcell was up to. Perhaps one did try and alert the AG to this, perhaps even confronted Purcell himself about his behaviour. I feel sorry for the good monks at Mt Melleray who are trying to follow their monastic vocation of prayer, contemplation and work while their abbot is behaving in such a way. I have no doubt that Purcell will have been using tacit bullying techniques to keep these monks quiet and to prevent them from escalating the matter. So, Purcell’s behaviour was not just about him, he was able to dominate the monastic life and culture of the monastery in order to facilitate his own ends. I am astounded, with all the alarm bells that were ringing in their ears, and with some of the facts before them about Purcell and his behaviour, that people like the AG and + Cullinane, among others, did not grip this matter and take action much earlier. That puts in to question their ability and inclination to fulfil their leadership calling. I suspect that the old clerical play book came in to action, namely they hoped that by being quiet and doing nothing that it would all be ignored and forgotten. In other words, coverup, complicity, lack of transparency, lying etc. etc. Surely by now they have learned that this simply does not work, as well as being just plain wrong ? Have they learned nothing from the crap that has engulfed them over the last decades with ongoing scandals and abusive clerical behaviour ? Evidently not. Which means that they are not fit for purpose and MUST GO !

Dear Bishop Patrick, I can confirm that the visitation of Mount Melleray by the abbot and Abbess was to give Father Purcell an ultimatum. “Go or be deposed”. Malachy took over as Abbot after Purcell was elevated to Mount Melleray. It would be interesting to establish if Malachy turned a blind eye so as to allow Purcell move on and therefore be elected abbot himself. Realistically there was no alternative in MSJ. I find Fr Aelred Magee’s reappearance in MSJ as very interesting. One could concur that Malachy and Aelred are closer than previously suspected. The OCSO works in mysterious ways. A cleric from Offaly has indicated that the axis of Aelred and Malachy may have been more detrimental to Purcell than some people realise. The Trappists like political power plays. Have we just witnessed a very subtle and dark chess move? The Bishop’s and the Queen’s gambit?

In this modern day society of cancel culture, some will want to be little those who have made mistakes very cruelly. It is not the Christian way.
P.S. A gentle reminder:
The Gospel of Luke contains 24 chapters. Reading a chapter a day for the first 24 days of December will be good Advent reading. Anyone who forgot yesterday can read two chapters today.

Expressed sorrow can be communicated through an action e.g. resignation. The best apology is changed behaviour. Can the bishop apologise for refusing you Holy Communion if he then goes on and does so again?
“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. “READ” the Mass!
So that’s what this supposedly central, vital and most significant clerical activity, one entirely reserved for priests, seem to amounts to
Even though you, @ 2:05 try to signify it’s importance by capitalising it, your referring to it as a “read” seems to indicate otherwise.
Was it merely a slip, or perhaps an indication of its irrelevance, as inwardly acknowledged but unspoken by some clerics, but nevertheless a useful mechanism to preserve priestly importance?

There is something it would be dangerous to miss here. There is a mythology that the church has at some point in the past been holy and pure and become corrupt at some point – for example trads put this point around Vatican 2 or the earlier modernist crisis.
However the reality is that just as in the world outside people have never lived according to the church’s sexual and other moral teaching, they never have in priesthood and religious life. Monastic profession does not automatically give you the grace to lose sexual imoulses and reading in historical monastic life shows this.
The above are facts and how you interpret it may differ from my own opinion, which is that the church’s sexual teaching is incredibly misguided and guaranteed to cause trouble.

The Cistercians at Mount Melleray Abbey have elected Dom Richard Purcell as their new Abbot. He is currently in the middle of a six-year term as Abbot of Mount St Joseph Abbey near Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, which is a daughter house of Mount Melleray Abbey.
“Normally we cannot vote for an Abbot from another house, but since Roscrea is a daughter house we are entitled to do that,” Fr Donal Davis, Bursar, Mount Melleray Abbey, told catholicireland.net.
“Mount Melleray has a concern for the other houses in Ireland, to assist them to plan their own future. So Richard is part of the Pontifical Commissary of Mellifont Abbey and the Father Immediate of Roscrea so he will have oversight there as well. We are hopeful of God’s help in this. We have discerned it as our way forward.”
Fr Davis explained that Mount Melleray, Co. Waterford, like the other Cistercian monasteries in Ireland, has been discerning and planning for the future.
“The community is doing quite well here. The spirit in the community is good and we have people coming to the monastery in good numbers. We have people interested in joining us,” he said.
He explained that this was confirmed by an Abbot and Abbess on visitations recently at the request of the Abbot General in Rome ahead of the General Chapter of Trappists in Assisi in September 2017.
“So they came here because there has been an issue in Ireland with dwindling numbers. There were five Cistercian monasteries in Ireland and for a good number of years there has been a dialogue among those monasteries to plan the future. They thought that some houses might have closed but that did not arise,” said Fr Davis.
“Just recently it was decided that Mount Melleray would be a good community going forward into the future. We needed an abbot and we elected Richard and he accepted.”
Dom Richard Purcell came to prominence in 2009 when he was described as Ireland’s youngest Abbot. He was then 33 years of age. Special permission had to be sought in order for him to become Abbot at Mount St Joseph Abbey, as he was younger than the required 35 years of age and he had not been professed for the required seven years.
It was necessary for him to secure a two-thirds majority for his election. He also had to get dispensations from Rome from the prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, and from Eamon Fitzgerald, Cistercian Abbot General in Rome, who dispensed with the minimum age requirement and confirmed Dom Richard as the eighth Abbot of Mount St Joseph Abbey.
Now he becomes Abbot at Mount Melleray. There are just eight men living in the community at the moment. Two more are in nursing homes, and one is living as a hermit near St Mary’s Abbey of Cistercian nuns in Glencairn, where he offers Mass at least once a week for the sisters.
There are people interested in joining the community or “knocking on the door” as Fr Davis puts it. The noviciate has been closed for a number of years, and a monk will have to be relieved of current work to perform the task of novice master. However, lay people are taking on more of the practical work at the Monastery such as running the café, shop and guesthouse. The farm has been leased out to a farmer.
“We have a steering group and they meet with us every month about the running of the monastery, in particular in relation to the businesses,” said Fr Davis. There have also been meetings with the local community to look for more volunteers. Some already help with guided tours, running the shop and keeping the website updated. The audiovisual presentation in the heritage centre also needs volunteers to help update it.
“The biggest thing is we believe the Lord is in this and it gives us the confidence to go forward,” said Fr Davis.
Dom Richard Purcell will no doubt be very much part of that. He is a native of Dublin, and entered Mount St Joseph Abbey, Roscrea in 1997, having previously studied music, French and Italian at UCD. He completed philosophy studies in Maynooth and theology at Oxford.
At the time of his election as Abbot in 2009, Dom Richard was Prior and Bursar at Mount St Joseph. In 2014 he was appointed Pontifical Commissary of Mellifont Abbey by the Holy See and is also President of the Cistercian Region of the Isles, a grouping of 11 Cistercian Monasteries of both monks and nuns in Ireland, the UK and Norway.

The whole thing sounds dire and it sounds like they looked to Richard as the saviour. 🙄

I have no idea really re ND has given his consent or not cos your blog didn’t make it clearly as it was very vague as to the issue of consent.

ND himself needs to explain that to readers of this blog as to clear it up once and for all.

It’s highly unlikely that ND will explain it here on this blog

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of the archbishop of Paris after he admitted to an “ambiguous” relationship with a woman in 2012.

Paris Archbishop Michel Aupetit said in a statement Thursday that he offered to step down “to preserve the diocese from the division that suspicion and loss of trust are continuing to provoke.”

The Vatican said in a statement that the pope accepted Aupetit’s offer, and named Monsignor Georges Pontier to serve in the archbishop’s place.

The resignation comes amid great upheaval in the French Catholic Church. A shocking report in October found some 3,000 French priests had committed sexual abuse over the past 70 years, and last year, the pope accepted the resignation of a French cardinal in connection with the coverup of sexual abuse of dozens of boys by a predatory priest.

“I ask forgiveness of those I could have hurt and assure you all of my deep friendship and my prayers,” Aupetit said in his statement. He said he was “greatly disturbed by the attacks against me.”

In an interview last week with Catholic radio Notre Dame, Aupetit said “I poorly handled the situation with a person who was in contact many times with me.” Calling it a “mistake,” he said he decided no longer to see the woman after speaking with Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois, the then-Paris archbishop, in 2012.

What I know, and I know much, is that there are Purcells all over every diocese in this country and all over the world. A Victorian principle applies. This Blog did not pursue Dermot Martin the way it chased the Abbot. There was no Robert Hurigan pursuing that big fish. I am afraid, the moralists are blinded by status. Even today, Pat is addressing “ His Eminence.” It’s very sad really.

Very true I think if we are going to make an example of Purcell then we need to be consistent and call all of them out, otherwise it is us who are the hypocrites. I find myself in the unusual position of making a stand for someone whom I have never met. Richard Purcell, when he first set out on the priestly path , clearly had more to give to the institution than he would ever receive. He seems to be talented in several spheres. He is now part of ecclesiastical carnage because of its innate disfunction. I have no doubt whatsoever that he will succeed if he has the courage to disengage. He will find no succour now with his erstwhile fellow Prelates.

Br Malachy Thompson is getting away lightly. How can he avoid scrutiny here? He was in Roscrea when Purcell met ND in the kitchen of the boarding school. This meet between RP and ND became common knowledge. RP left and Mal became superior. It is evident that things were overlooked and ignored to protect the ‘good name’ of Cistercian college. It is incredible that Malachy has not had to answer pertinent questions about what he knew and why he didn’t act. He is patron of the college. How he could have potentially ignored such serious behaviour and continue to be a patron of an all boys boarding school is beyond comprehension. The department of education need to investigate what went on in Roscrea. Taxpayers money is used to pay wages of teachers. The OCSO need to come clean here and tell the truth of who knew what and when. This is not going away. Is the college in compliance of their safeguarding policy? Too many unanswered questions!

Excuse me, but surely the biggest revelation on today’s blog – courtesy of a quote from a newspaper when Richard became Abbot of Mountmelleray – is that he is Father Immediate of Roscrea. And you wonder why Malachy never replied? Gerard Grealish has been relegated to second division with the appointment of a new president to the school in the last month. What will happen to it when the monks leave for Melleray. Why did Malachy not reply to you? Has the Monastic kitchen been blessed and cleansed?

Like

7.11: Why should the kitchen be cleansed and blessed. Two consenting men had sex.. Couples do it all the time in the kitchen.. ask Pat! Get a grip. That the two men were priests adds a moral dimension to their behaviour but both were responsible. No need for a blessing of the kitchen.. Nonsense.

It happened in the monastery and the Monks are not involved in school. The community may own the buildings but that is it. They tried to close the school but parents campaigned to save it and raised their own monies. There isn’t even a monk on the board. The monks are trying to divest from the school for years.

Like

The superior Malachy appoints the board. They own the school and have control of all money. As patron of the school they cannot ‘divest’ responsibility or duties. Money loaned to the school has to be repaid. This is what the money raised is going towards.

@7:11pm ‘ Gerard Grealish has been relegated to second division with the appointment of a new president to the school in the last month.’ is this connected to the Purcell scandal? Previous posts here have indicated that Grealish and Purcell are very friendly.

I suspect so, yes. The school’s future is very precarious. Dom Malachy would have known what challenges were coming down the track. Grealish was always seen as a lightweight, ironically a puppet for Malachy. Typical of the Trappists, Grealish is being disposed of when he is no longer of any use.

Reading this blog in last few days the Cistercian school in Roscrea have replaced the Principal and the Chair of their board recently. Then the former abbot who had sex with a priest in the monastery/school resigns. Immediately followed by the abbot general’s resignation . And we are lead to believe their is nothing to investigate in Roscrea?

Like

What springs to the eye from the comments today is the governance of the school isn’t separate from the monastery. The EBC schools were forced to do this because of the obvious conflict this causes.

Like

Exactly. Most school patrons are geographically remote from their schools. Roscrea school is physically attached to the building their patron is in. Given the Cistercians propensity to control, there is zero chance they aren’t intimately involved in the school’s day to day operations. This is very worrying.

Like

Principal wasn’t replaced. New president installed. There was always a president and principal in past. Monks have nothing to do with school in fact they tried to close it a few years ago. Parents have a team running it.
