So, it looks like some E&W Diocese are preparing to make big cuts. Where I am in the south of England they are talking 30% across the board. Well, they say across the board, but naturally, it will be the low hanging fruit that they will cull first – especially the lay people that they have brought in over the last few decades to do the jobs that priests used to do, but who will be the ones with most to lose unprotected as they are by the clerical brotherhood umbrella. Also, I bet the you the retired and the sick will be told to live on less, and as for the MIA and C/0 that are supported I expect that they will just be cut loose. This is set agains a couple of things that indicate to me that the RC Church in E&W is actually very wealthy. Just look at their various accounts from the Charity Commissioners to see how much they have in investments, land, buildings etc. The argument is that these should not be used to cover shortfalls, but perhaps this latest financial difficulty is one of those episodes that should be covered, rather than throwing the weakest and most convenient under the wheel in order to balance the books. It all begs the question about whether people will come back to church and start to put their money on the plate. I suspect not. So, there is going to be an ongoing problem, but using what they have all saved up in intelligent and creative ways could well cover any shortfall. Also, the much talked about and vaunted Gubay Trust money, which I’ve seen clergy licking their whiskers in contentment at the thought of, could be made available for some help ? There are lots of ways to manage these situations, but just going for the soft underbelly of those who work for the charity for far less than the market rate anyhow is not very edifying. Of course, Their Lordships and the clergy will be fine. There are all sorts of grey economies in those episcopal houses and presbyteries. A 30 % cut there can easily be covered for them by creative book-keeping, and that is what will happen. Also, keep an eye on some vanity building projects that will no doubt still find funding.
LikeLike
About time we had cuts. An obscure, mostly rural diocese – Clifton – has an entire office block full of penpushers. The number in the pews keeps on falling, while the bureaucracy grows.
Take Maynooth, for example, where the desk priests of the episcopal conference secretariat and their lay colleagues have taken over all the old senior infirmary and big chunks of New House and Long Corridor. Seminarian bedrooms have been turned into offices. Is that progress?

E&W dioceses are targeting the elderly and retired clergy just as we speak, cutting their pensions. Elsie started it. He brought in that American lot to fundraise. Badgered people to give more direct debit monthly, hard sell trump style. Very few clown bishops adopted it but few to be fair as the other bishops had intelligence. TheAmerican lot have never been mentioned since. Disaster.

I know Bishop Byrne – inveterate gossip, snobby (not sure why, he’s a Manc) and Machiavellian to his bones.
Loves his luxuries and comfort and God help you if you get between him and his afternoon nap – very religious about this so he is, as if too much energy expenditure brings on a slumber.
A good delegator which means he always has someone to blame if a project he is heading up (I wouldn’t put him in charge of a male brothel) goes tits or cock up.
Doesn’t seem remotely interested in the fairer sex but middle/upper class Oxbridge educated clerics seem to float his boat.
Most striking things about him: Small and Rotund Quennie Gossip – wouldn’t have the courage to stab you in front but v adept at stabbing you in the back. Years of experience I reckon.
His elevation to the purple tied up with ability to sort out his Queenie and Histrionic brothers at the Oratory and probably good at keeping scandal on the down low.
The suicide of his cathedral dean who was being investigated for child abuse and Gardiner living with him suggests that there isn’t so much Murder at the Cathedral but I’d say a fair degree of trouble at Mill.
Oh and has an irritating tendency to appear terribly pleased with himself – cat and cream so to speak.
Has never learnt the wisdom of the adage: he who is a viscous gossip gets gossiped about – what goes around comes around.
Wouldn’t set foot in his diocese if you paid me – and I really like him!!

Yes the American style hard sell has died a death. Only a few dioceses adopted it in E&W. It went down like a pile of xxxx and yes, Vincent started it. Swept under the carpet quietly now. Basically you get some eejits in the parish to visit homes and sweet talk them. They set up direct debits with the wealthier class like selling double glazing. It’s abandoned now because it was a sham. Uncomfortable topic now, best forgotten in the E&W lot. If you are a bishop reading this, do not let that American leeches in to your diocese to fundraise. Oh sorry, I forget to mention their cut of the profits. Abandoned idea, I wonder why?

Chief Executive Officers in dioceses these days can expect north of £100,000 for starters. It’s not what they would get in the non-Church sector, but it’s decent enough. I find it interesting that clergy tend to downplay / underestimate their real remuneration. They will tell you about their paltry stipend, but neglect everything that is found and for which they don’t have to pay, and which in the real world people have to provide for themselves. I reckon a priest’s real life income is probably north of £40,000 per annum, and in some nicer places considerably more. There are lots of pots they can dip in to to supplement their headline income. True ?

They fend off any smell of the sheep with the latest cologne from Christian Dior or Givenchy and their idea of a hard days work is saying two masses. It’s a dichotomy. If the priest has a history and is still a priest, then what best to do ? There is a good argument for saying he should be surveilled / kept an eye on / be contained. Just casting him out could be seen as careless and reckless. If he still has some connection to the Church, then the Church has a vicarious responsibility of some sort, surely ? Of course, the question is why is he still a priest, if he is, after a conviction for such offences ? If he’s not a priest then he should be left to his own devices and come under the oversight of the police / social services etc. Anybody know all the details – like is he still a priest ?

Fr Dolman the new Rector doesn’t have a STL which is a requirement for a seminary – unless he’s doing one or they fast track it and he gets it on the down low and a shoe in etc.
Oakley, McKinny, not so much Crisp but McDonald and Kelly and many former Rectors right clever clogs and don’t they know it – maybe Dolman is a pastoral genius parachuted in to sort the gay cartel and mafia who run amok.
I reckon out of his depth – nice fella no bite – the gays in village Oscott will be running rings around him.
Nursey is as gay as the day is long – as chaste as the Virgin Mary I’m sure but a soft spot for his private sec whose been with him for years and years – what’s that all about – give the man a parish and see if he cuts the mustard.

Monsignor Mark Crisp did not have an STL. He left Rome with a PhB and STB.

Dolman is weak, and was formed in the same environment. It needed an outsider to reform the place. Mark Harrold former vice at the VEC would have been a good appointment.

Pat, today you’ve allowed repeat commenters express very unkind, nasty, mean spirited and ugly things about particular priests, especially newly ordained priests. Do you honestly think it’s acceptable to allow and print these pejorative and very ugly comments? I would love to know your answer to this question – truthfully. Place yourself back to your ordination day and the weeks following on from that: You were a reticent, shy and sensitive person then. Imagine if you were subjected to the nasty, fat shaming, denigrating and sneering comments as have been printed today? Would you still be here? As you know many youngish people have taken their lives because of similar trolling commentary or have grown into despair and depression. This type of commentary is a horrendous bullying. I know that the ugly anonymous trolls who make these comnents woukd not dare to express them to these individuals face to face in the company of other people. They would face the charge of reckless behaviour, hatred, bias and needless prejudice. I thought out of your own harrowing experiences of your life that you might have a more intelligent insight and a more humane awareness about the horrible effects of this trolling. Certain narratives which deliberately denigrate others are morally reprehensible and unacceptable. Do you have any code of ethics or boundaries you won’t cross?

Why so offended? Why so self-righteous and your narrative whiffs of holier than thou and protectionism of the clerical caste.
Get with the choir hun:catch up, clerical child abuse and scandal after scandal has changed public perception of the RC priesthood for ever – everyone is fair game in the world where freedom of speech and freedom of expression run unhindered by the tepid scruples you express.
Young clergy are ripe for lampoon and mickey take – they bring it on themselves- bloated, fat, entitled, spoilt and entitled – they have been grist for the milk of satire for years – only difference is now they and you (cleric) don’t like it, so you squeal and complain and blame Bishop Pat, when the truth is you have no one to blame but yourself.

9.21: You deliberately misread my comment at 8.31: I abhor sexual abuse by any person, including clerics. I would never attempt to condone such behaviour. I was talking abiut the sneering, personalised and ignorant comments which are unnecessary. You are so wrong in understanding the essence of intelligent commentary. I have no difficulty with legitimate criticism but the type of nastyism and hate filled rhetoric you support is morally reprehensible. Your ilk are sick.

The faithful are fed up with this clerical circus. It’s unmanly to flounce around in lace. They need physical activity on the playing field. As for 8.31 pm, they ignore the problem as do their formations, which is dangerous for mental health. Everyone knows that a healthy mind in a healthy body is required. I am sorry but they are positively unhealthy. Oscott has large playing fields and a gym. There really is no excuse.

Oscott turned out Jolley, overweight and dressed up in lace. By the way, he must now be out of prison. He was sentenced to 40 months in October 2019. Should he have been released after serving half his sentence?

You can’t help yourself can you?
Your holier than thou, pretentious and self-righteous posturing saps the life out of, well, life.
The very stone you throw, the very finger you point, comes right back at ya.
If you hated and despised the very things you condemn you wouldn’t keep coming back to the blog.
But you can’t help yourself can you?
I sense the frisson when you condemn it gives you a thrill doesn’t it – ah God love ya – clergy my little clergy friend are fair game and fair play I say.

There’s an adage “Never go back” and that applies strongly to putting this blog item back up, given that it’s attracted some of the most unpleasant people ever to comment on the blog, and that’s saying something. Maybe everyone should just say their night prayers and go to sleep. Tomorrow’s a new day.

Fatscott needs to send its camp fatties to fat camp for intense physical exercise. Bishop Billy Bunter should lead by example.

Pat after seeing the evidence from the ordination photos, one can see Oscott is really out of reality to the modern day priesthood. That video of Stuart Chapel talking about his vocation was a real insight these are not men but young boys who clearly have not discover themselves. He is very effeminate and is most likely a virgin who has no life experience and is clearly into dressing up. When he said he would have to give up golf to become a priest what world is he living on? All this just proves Oscott’s formation to the priesthood is a joke.

Listen to yourself ‘Mr or Fr if I pronounce then so it is’ – by what criteria do you conclude whether people are unpleasant or not – it’s a blog darling, the posters are anonymous, you know nothing about them therefore you can judge (your a cleric, you judge all day long) and please spare me your patronising infantile gibberish about night prayers and sleep like your Daddy and we’re children.
I disagree the posts today reflect the freedom of speech and expression fitting of an adult blog.
Goodnight and God Bless!!!

I really hope Father Timothy Gardner will soon be Mr Timothy Gardner (the mark of the sacrament cannot be erased but a line has been irrevocably crossed). Benedict introduced a stable system to get rid of pervs from the priesthood The now somewhat disgraced Cardinal Coccopalmiero (he of the cocaine orgy fame, well his secretary Capozzi altho some allege Cocco was there, which amused him, given his age, and he denied it) used the confusing days of the changeover to lobby for the depraved Don Inzoli. What I hope is that Fr becomes Mr quickly. A bishop should be a father to his priests but is also a father to his parishioners. For too many now priest and paedo go together. Pray, for only a miracle will get us past these horrors. Pervs seem to have pals.
Again I don’t think the vestments have anything wrong with them. Given the visceral response some have, there must be some secret V2 doc which exhorted tie dye and polyester, plus a horde of middle aged women around the altar. The problems are of another sort, a stench of moral decadence. I’m not sure these episcopal grand dames have it in them to clear the stench.
