SILVERSTREAM

In light of recent events at Mount Melleray Abbey; emerging events at Worth Abbey, and known events at Silverstream Priory; today, the blog is going to focus on the latter monastic institution.

I take no delight in the oblique reference made to this blog made in the accounts of Silverstream Priory available on the website of the Charities Regulator:

“The Monastery has received some negative media attention, which may have some negative impact on income for the Company. The actual financial effect this attention could have is difficult to quantify. However the Directors are confident that the Company has the capability to continue its activities profitably”.

What was the source of this negative media attention? My little blog — ably assisted by The Pillar and the Irish Independent; but, I got in there first.

However, the accounts have brushed under the carpet the following known realities.

The founding Prior Dom Mark Kirby, OSB has been credibly accused of sexual misconduct and inappropriate contact. It is the fact that there are allegations of financial mismanagement/unaccounted funds/and people being paid out the back door, recognised in all jurisdictions as tax fraud.

It is the fact that Kirby has feigned being some kind of “mystic” that receives directions from the Lord in the tabernacle. It is the fact that Kirby then decided to publish a book which was somehow both edited and ecclesiastically vetted by Dr. Peter Kwasniewski (an individual who, judging by his anti-Francis rhetoric, is well on the way to sedevacantism) a book that has endorsements from the usual crackpots: Cardinal Burke and Archbishop Viganò.

I have learned that as a priest and instructor in the United States Dom Kirby absolutely HATED the Latin Mass. He was vehemently opposed to the TLM. It was only when he became a monastic founder in the American church that he decided to reinvent himself as a liturgical conservative.

Amusingly, I see no entry in the accounts for funds received from the Archdiocese of Sydney to cover the costs of Fr. Abourjaily staying at Silverstream for an extended period. I wonder was that another “cash under the counter” job?

It has been the repeated failure of Bishop Deenihan to do the right thing. It is clear that he has punished the whistleblower, Dom Benedict Anderson by forcing him to reside outside the house of his monastic profession. Like a typical ignorant Cork-born man, Deenihan has weaponised the canonical processes of the Church in attempt to punish and undermine the credibility of Anderson by accusing him of violating the seal of confession. I have it on good authority from priests of the Diocese of Meath that the allegation made against Andersen came from within Silverstream.

It continues to be scandalous that Silverstream Priory to have Mark Kirby as one of its Directors, who according to the accounts served as the company secretary throughout the financial year.

In light of its sad history and the sordid past of its founder, the harsh reality is that Silverstream Priory does not have a future. In any other Irish Diocese, Silverstream would be facing suppression, but I suspect, Deenihan does not want to be seen to be acting and responsive to his brother Bishop in Larne, Pat Buckley.

Conversely, the adverse publicity from the blog has been good for Silverstream. We read the following: “At the end of the financial year the charity has assets of €2,725,454 (2019 – €2,570,177) and liabilities of €126,574 (2019 – €146,643). The net assets of the charity have increased by €175,346”.

Also in the accounts we read the following:

“The principal activity of the company is the advancement of the Catholic faith through the establishment of a Benedictine monastery in Ireland. The company relies on donations to continue its work and there is always the risk of not getting sufficient funds to continue the development of the monastery. However, the Directors intend to set aside excess funds for future development. The company had a surplus of €175,346 compared with a surplus in 2019 of €37,780 while net assets at 31st December 2020 amounted to €2,598,880 compared with net assets of €2,423,534 as at 31st December 2019”.

Bishop Deenihan will be pleased by all that cash; because, when Silverstream Priory is suppressed by a Decree of the Holy See its closure will engorge the coffers of the Diocese of Meath. Bishop Tom who loves the Latin Mass, will keep encouraging the cash to keep rolling in Silverstream’s bank account.

I wonder: did Bishop Deenihan receive a generous “gift” from Silverstream when he was appointed the Bishop of Meath? In the church it is known as a “gift” in industry it is known as a “bribe”.

Silverstream Priory has been fantastic for the viewing figures of my blog. Because, it is a scandal that is not going away. It is a gift that keeps on giving. And, I am sure it will be the source of many more stories until the Priory is suppressed. You never know: my blog might get a bigger mention in the accounts next year.

Now that is absolutely hilarious. I am amused that the professionals involved in the production of the accounts allowed that to be recorded. It is just nuts. But Silverstream is nuts and it is a scandal that keeps going and going. When will it ever end? 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Like

+Pat, I agree with your analysis that Deenihan would like the coffers of Silverstream to be as full as possible when the place is suppressed. Once provision is made for the monks the rest will go to Meath. Deenihan is really interested in the property which will be of real interest to a developer.

Like

Where did you get the idea that bishop Deenihan loves the Latin Mass? If he left Maynooth without a degree it would be most unlikely he would have any Latin more than Kyrie eleison, and amen. As the former is Greek and the latter Hebrew it would be tactless to state what is evident.

Like

His Excellency. Bishop Deenihan has a doctorate. Please have some respect for his intellectual status.

I suppose it’s not so unusual that someone would be admitted to a master’s programme without a primary degree.

He was probably admitted to the doctoral program on the basis of his experience as a teacher and administrator.

The post is being facetious on this point. Bishop Deenihan is not protecting Silverstream for any other reason than he is biding his time until he can engorge himself on its proceeds without looking as if the suppression is a response to pressure from our favourite episcopal blogger.

Never under-estimate the connections that Cork & Ross has. Deenihan was so openly ambitious that he would eventually get a Bishopric. The clergy in Cork knew well enough to have him moved on before Cork & Ross became vacant. Sometimes you just got to knock the sliotar out of the park to score a pint.

How did you get that annual report, Bishop Pat? The accounts of Irish charities are much more hidden than in the UK. Annual reports are few and far between on the Irish charity regulator website. They might consider protecting themselves from the “haters” by uttering a few words in their defense. But I suspect that the consistent silence means that there is no defense to be made for Kirby and for what has been done to Fr Anderson.

Concern about certain words and gesture of Francis does not make for sedevacantism. Dr. Peter Kwasniewski has produced a lot of fine material for Catholics (https://www.newliturgicalmovement.org/ and many books) who wish to be part of the Church’s future not a deeply problematic 50 year old experiment (essentially based on fabricated history and now discredited ideas) which has essentially erased Catholicism (as something with a future or like in Belgium erased it almost entirely) in most of western Europe. Francis claims sins of the flesh to be not so serious, when almost all those are mortal sins. All mortal sins are frankly equal. Dying with the stain of it leads directly to hell. Words like that are a positive menace to those fighting sexual compulsions or addictions. Those who fail to fight those compulsions often end up the subject of posts on this blog and / or in cells, not of the monastic sort.
Anyhow sedevacantists reject the orders of other sedes on plausible grounds (the Thuc consecrations) or nonsense like non una cum (a wilful distortion and a cultic device that holds any Mass mentioning Pope Francis in the Canon must be avoided by Catholics). The founding of the CMRI, a notable sede body, was a once somewhat well known occasion of horrifying scandal, both sexual crimes and mistreatment of children. Noticeably CMRI do not mention their founder Francis Schuckardt (https://cmri.org/about-cmri/history-of-cmri/). They seem moderate in their way, but why do they keep the name given them by someone so wretched? Dr. Peter Kwasniewski could not be more distant from these sects, which don’t really matter. Sedevacantism is a thing only really in the US and Mexico.
The serenity and efficiency of the SSPX (expellee Bp Williamson and other micro breakaways are a side issue of a side issue and there are concerns about them on well known or not so well known grounds, like one Fr Abraham, altho his current situation does keep him out of the way, and no more can be done as he was never charged) who rightly recognise Francis as Pope should be an example for all Catholics. They can only take a minority of the young men who wish to be priests with them. They can barely accommodate Mass goers.
The Legionaries of Christ were founded by fearsome sexual predator Marcial Maciel who reported died unrepentantly. JP2 was three monkeys with Maciel who helped things by generous gifts of money. Yet it was not suppressed and seems reasonably successful if somewhat cult-like. LC priests are certainly apologetic over their wicked founder. Now the fruity windbag Dom Kirby (I heard him preach once, lots of nothing wrapped in elaborate phraseology) seems both a menace to young men and charlatan but what he created seems successful, as Kirby used a proven model. It is not surprising he disliked the TLM. Silverstream was a business decision and a ticket to fame. Kirby and any of his friends need to be removed from any control over Silverstream. And amends need to be made to the whistleblower, Dom Anderson. I predict that Silverstream will not be suppressed, but if corrections aren’t made, it will look less and less credible. Kicking out Kirby seems simpler than suppression.
Traditional Benedictine spirituality has worked well with Le Barroux (https://www.barroux.org/en/) and other places. In fact traditional houses operate so well they can draw jealous and covetous attention. The Franciscan of the Immaculate were essentially reduced to a shell, but happily the effort to loot its property failed as a lay trust holds it. Currently a series of visitations (mostly in the US) are wreaking havoc on the houses of religious sisters who are both devout and actually under 50. At least the FI experience lets them know that these visitations are about destroying them, so nuns often just decamp to some other location.
Pope Francis should accept as Benedict did that Latin Catholicism is no monolith. Tradition just works.
Apologies as this is surely too long, got through some horrible work.
God bless all here, particularly +Pat.

Like

If the definition of ‘tradition’ excludes the Second Ecumenical Council of the Vatican and the 1970 Missal, you’re already sedevacantist, there’s no way around it. It is the natural end of the tridentinist route.

Like

That is just silly. Annibale Bugnini CM, effectively creator the New Order of Mass personally granted an indult of the TLM to the then relatively youthful Rosminian Fr Charles-Roux with the words roughly ‘my dear boy, you need hardly ask.’ England and Wales, got the Heenan (the Cardinal was a help to St. Paul VI) or Agatha Christie indult granted TLM under the 1966/7 Missal wherever the bishop permitted. Rejecting V2 is like picking up mercury with a fork. What interpretation of V2 and particularly Sacrosanctum Concilium (Latin and chant upheld despite loose phrasing) or Lumen Gentium (which upheld EENS).

Brain freeze with Dr K. His liturgical writing are good, just read them, but him and his wife are utter cronies of the disgraced former abbot and conman (although it is more like the abbot just vanished, it’s intriguing really). I notice NLM suddenly has nothing on the abbot after 2013. Dr Joseph Shaw, head of the LMS (UK), who called Taylor Marshall a fool for suggesting the French Ecclesia Dei societies openly defy Pope Francis, is a more amenable defender of TLM.

Now some sedes like the SSPV might envisage Francis as the office holder, but only materially until he renounces what they see as his heresies, but the SSPX accord full respect to the Pope who gave them definite faculties after the Year of Mercy. +Marcel Lefebvre signed all the documents of V2, although SC and LG gave him concern later.

Below is the last in the SSPX series on the crisis in the Church:

I would add too that Bp Rifan, head of the Personal Administration of St John Vianney, a Brazilian traditional society has concelebrated NOM with Pope Francis and FSSP priests may concelebrate if asked, although this only usually relates to the bishop’s Chrism Mass. They can do so any time after an Ecclesia Dei ruling Anyhow not having the standard Mass in its charism does not mean rejecting the Pope or V2.

Everywhere we look, there are so called religious people involved in all sorts of misdoings, some of it criminal. The stench is overwhelming. There is constant ongoing collusion and coverup by these people while at the same time attempting to portray a veneer of faux religiosity and spirituality. The glimpses that we have been able to get show the real picture. The only way forward is for them to be brought to account through transparency and honesty, and then if not able to be reformed, then to be suppressed. + Pat has the ability to shatter the facades and for the truth to be made clear. I admire his fearlessness in this. Somebody has to do it, because the rest – bishops, clergy, nuncios, Vatican etc – have a vested interest in keeping the secrets and allowing things to carry on.

Other concerns focused on the monastery’s failure to present annual accounts to Prioty’s chapter for approval.”
Who is following up on these points from the report to ensure compliance?
“In their report, the visitation team recognised that serious breaches of medical data protection and spiritual confidentiality”
Who is following up on these concerns? Surely a follow up visitation is required next year to see what progress has been made?

In principle Silverstream had huge potential. While it was a little quirky and too American for my tastes, those who came and joined the community did so in good faith and we should not deprecate the sincerity of their intentions.

But it has become clear that the founder is a flawed individual with an unsavoury and chequered ecclesiastical history. That should have rung alarm bells for Bishop Smith, however, we have learned from this blog that no due diligence was undertaken. And it remains just remarkable that Deenihan continues to do nothing about a major source of ongoing scandal in his own diocese. One has to wonder what is Deenihan hiding? Does he have an ulterior motive?

Deenihan will be enraged to be referred to as an ignorant Cork man on this blog. That was deliberate and provocative but it is the ugly truth. He has not surrounded himself in glory with his mishandling of this scandal.

Think its a deliberate decision to omit new superior so that kirby can control things afar from the board instead of being bypassed by new superior.
New director names sounded like familiar American surnames, eg Houser. Perhaps k
Kirby may want to bring in from outside to dilute irish control or?
It seems to me that directors names doesn’t tally with names of directors on financial accounts. A mismatch if you could see it yourself.
We know now based on charity regulator lists of directors that Gérard Deighton is gone. Problem with financial accounts was that its a snapshot at one time or date. So it’s not updated as they go along except for charity regulator website.
That’s my take here.

I seem to recall that Cardinal Burke visited Silverstream sometime in November 2016. It was his second visit. Perhaps, he was visiting the fledging foundation because his former secretary Fr Houser had joined the community. Would Burke now approve of Silverstream in light of what is now known about Kirby and his nefarious pass?

+Pat, I think it is no harm for readers of the blog to be reminded of what has been alleged by the co-founder of Silverstream Dom Benedict Andersen. He has made a number of serious accusations. They were found to be sufficiently serious to warrant a visitation of the community. It is truly unfortunate for him that the visitators were the now disgraced Richard Purcell and the incompetent Brendan Coffey. It must be tragic for him to have Deenihan as his bishop.
It is obvious that Deenihan is punishing the whistleblower in order to minimise his own mishandling of the allegations and for bringing negative publicity on the diocese.
And if you are correct that the allegation about Dom Andersen allegedly violating the seal of confession came from within the Silverstream community. It has no credibility particularly if it came from a Kirby loyalist/sycophant. But of course Deenihan ran with it because he needed something to destroy the reputation of the whistleblower.
It is good that you have many contacts in the Diocese of Meath that provide you with information because otherwise this is another monastic scandal that would never have seen the light of day.

Your posting is extremely thought-provoking. We will have to disagree about Kwasniewski. I do not consider his work to be original as he has no appreciation of liturgical history. He produces excellent propaganda that reflects his autistic-like obsession with the TLM.

I do, however, agree with your observations about the Legion of Christ and its scandalous founder. But the real reason the Legion of Christ was not suppressed there was so much money at stake. They remain a corrupt and metastasising cancer in the Church.

Le Barroux has NOT worked well. It is riven with division and infighting. It, too, has its own scandals that have not come into the public domain. That community is a demonstrable example of the triumph of style over substance.

You eloquently describe Dom Kirby and his hysterical preaching. However, I predict that Silverstream will be suppressed because Deenihan does not want the failed experiment of his predecessor in his diocese.

Like

The Incumbent of Meath is now on the horns of a dilemma: he may want to suppress but he cannot bring himself to be seen to be dancing to this blog’s fiddle. So he lets the controversy fester, day by day, month by month, and now it seems, year by year. And this blog delights in every second of it!

Like

I submit that Bishop Tom would do well to learn from Pope Francis’ recent airplane press conference.

He accepted Aupetit’s resignation immediately because the controversy surrounding him made his ministry as Archbishop of Paris functionally impossible.

And that controversy is a tempest in a teapot compared to almost two years now of the Kirby-Deenihan-Cullinan-Purcell-Coffey axis of misconduct and rank stupidity!

Silverstream Priory is a true international scandal; either reform it (beginning with the expulsion of Kirby and the appointment of a sane outsider as prior) or suppress it, for the good of the people of God.

Like

Silverstream is utterly irredeemable. Dom Kirby’s vanity project for the greater good of the Church needs to be suppressed with all haste. The monks who are in solemn vows need assistance to transfer to mainstream Benedictine communities. Those in simple vows need to be assisted to find willing abbots who will accept them, and those who are not yet professed should be sent on their way.

I agree that Silverstream will be suppressed. The appointment of a non-cleric as the superior is evidence of that reality. And, there are questions about his probity that have been raised on this blog in the past. Hence, if Deenihan was serious about keeping Silverstream open as a going concern; he would have ordained him a deacon and a priest by now. However, Deenihan knows that if he ordains anybody from Silverstream — they automatically become a priest of the Diocese of Meath, and Deenihan does not want any more problems from Silverstream.

Are any of the community undergoing studies for ordination? One would expect that to influence ordinations or not.
If any are ordained, they will making vows of obedience to the community and abbot, as opposed to the diocese and the bishop.

The ‘mainstream’ Benedictine houses whether in the Benedictine confederation or the Swiss-German congregation (if there are any at least in the UK) have a very senior age profile, of an age where the monk is excused the full rigours of the Divine Office and life, while Silverstream has young monks. A simpler solution would be to engage a prior from somewhere like La Barroux with a traditional Benedictine charism. A bent prior doesn’t merit the suppression of a whole community however much some on the blog detest the traditional Mass. If perv priors or pervy senior monks were the criteria for suppression, a lot of male religious houses would vanish. I would be surprised if it is suppressed. It would be a radical pivot from the visitation, how problematic some aspects of that were.

I agree, Anon2811. The examples of the church suppressing institutes on that basis are few and far between, Dom Andersen’s former community in Rome being one of the few examples.
My money would be on it being kept going to the bitter end not to give the Bishop of Larne the satisfaction.

10:50, surely you mean Dom *Kirby’s* former community in Rome (the O.Cists at Santa Croce in Gerusalemme) and NOT Dom Andersen’s; the latter’s first and only religious community has been Silverstream Priory (unfortunately for him).

I’m not convinced by the need for suppression either. The abbot resigned last year. His return is a concern. It’s fair to keep a spotlight on the on-going investigations.
The community, outside of the fallen abbot, should be afforded the opportunity to correct the failings that have gone before.
Pax.

+Pat, I do like the approach that you took today highlighting the accounts and the financial information about Silverstream. I would encourage you to publish similar financial information about some of the other monasteries from time to time.

Bishop Thomas Deenihan for good or ill is the canonical superior of Silverstream Priory because it is a community of Diocesan Right. Thus, Deenihan, has the authority to dispense from vows. And, if a monk is ordained a priest that individual by virtue of the law itself is incardinated into the Diocese of Meath — a reality that Deenihan will be keen to avoid at all costs. Moreover, in communities where the Diocesan Bishop is the ultimate superior during the ordination the religious who is to be ordained a priest will promise obedience to the Bishop and to his legitimate religious superior.

La Barroux is riddled with problems and it does NOT have a traditional Benedictine charism. It has appropriated a misguided and synchronistic understanding of the monastic tradition.

Yes, a bent Prior does actually merit the suppression of the whole community of Silverstream because Kirby is the founding superior. A community is an expression of the charism of the founder. And, as +Pat has remarked Silverstream is a gay man’s fantasy.

However, I do agree that if religious superiors were expected to be whiter than white then a conspicuous amount of male religious houses would have to be suppressed.

@11:33 presumably you mean anachronistic, regarding a form of Life followed from the 560s to the late 1960s. The thing is that houses that went full tilt with the ‘spirit of V2’ are variously closed or the habitation of a few men of advanced years, traditionally too old for the full rigours of the monastic Rule. This spirit, not based on the imperfect but reasonable documents of V2, has done what war and plague has not managed, that is, largely obliterated the Church in most of northern Europe. No monastery is perfect, but la Barroux is a place of life, not a waiting room for death like most monasteries in Europe. This is not to score points, but something has gone really wrong here.

A good many houses, good and bad will simply shutter or be repurposed without any urgent need for suppression before they become some sort of HSE office.

Kirby is strongly alleged to sexually harass young men (and quite possibly helped himself to money, or shared it out), but the life of that house mixing the Benedictine way with perpetual adoration seems adequate, and would need nothing more than a clear out of Kirby (plus Kirby) linked directors and perhaps some re ordering of the monastic life, although the mix of work and prayer seems a good starting point. Perhaps another Benedictine house could help clear it of Kirbyism.

Who Fits into the community?
“If a man brings with him a cheerful, flexible disposition and the ability to adapt to changes in routine, he will do well with us. If, on the other hand, he is rigid, legalistic, all bound up in personal patterns of piety, and incapable of adapting himself to the exigencies of a growing monastery, he will not thrive with us. It goes without saying that anyone with a disposition that is chronically critical, judgemental, or arrogant is unfit for monastic life.”

Altho the source be Silversteam, it is a wise set of words. St John of the Cross told of having to pull away novices from odd personal forms of devotion towards the comradeship of common life, unless I misremember.

Why do the Meath clergy allow Deenihan to behave in this way. Silverstream priests are incardinated into Meath. Ordaining a candidate a priest while he is still in temporary vows is a serious matter. Who was responsible for this decision?
