SILVERSTREAM – IT AINT ALL OVER TILL THE FAT LADY SINGS.

FROM SILVERSTREAM WEBSITE

STATEMENT FROM SILVERSTREAM PRIORY

Dear friends,

As you may be aware, in 2020 allegations were made to the Gardaí and to the Charities Regulatory Authority concerning our monastery and its founder, Dom Mark Daniel Kirby. While the allegations were denied, we understood that they had to be investigated by the various authorities and we cooperated fully with the lengthy and thorough investigations that followed.

An Garda Síochána, the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Charities Regulatory Authority have now completed their thorough investigations and they have found no cause of action against either Dom Mark or Silverstream Priory.

Subsequently, an independent external canonical investigation found no canonical case to answer.

Silverstream Priory remains a recognised and registered charity with the Charities Regulatory Authority and complies fully with the Charities Governance Code. Dom Mark is a priest in good standing.

We want to thank you for your prayers and well wishes, which we appreciate sincerely.

We look forward to your support as our community continues to grow.

In Christ,

The Monastic Community

EMAIL TO TOM DEENIHAN

Dear Bishop Tom,

As you know a number of priests from the Diocese of Meath supply me with information about Silverstream Priory. They do so because they continue to be DEEPLY concerned about what they consider is your negligent handling of the so-called “Priory”. They are scandalised that you continue to permit a never-ending source of scandal to exist within the diocese. They are increasingly concerned that your judgement has become clouded because you do not wish to appear acting in response to the Bishop of Larne.

Let me be blunt, the vast majority of the priests in your diocese want Silverstream immediately suppressed. Of course, I want the Priory to remain open, because it continues to provide my blog a rich seam of scandal that my readers just love. I know this, because my viewing figures go through the roof when I have a Silverstream day.

This morning, I was sent a link to a statement, posted on December 16, 2021 on the website of Silverstream Priory. I enclose a copy below for your kind consideration. As ever, these statements beget more questions than answers. As you know, I am a quizzical individual, and readers of my blog like me to ask questions of you on their behalf. And, as I know you love hearing from me, I felt you would welcome the present correspondence.

Bishop Tom, are you aware of the statement? Did you personally and explicitly approve in writing its publication on the website of Silverstream Priory?

Now, the statement makes explicit reference to Dom Mark Kirby being a priest in good standing. As Silverstream Priory is a foundation of Diocesan Right, Dom Kirby is clearly a priest in good standing with his Ordinary, Bishop Thomas Deenihan. You would accept that is the natural inference of that statement; if not; why not?

Have you now rescinded the Decree that prohibited Dom Mark Kirby, OSB, publicly celebrating the sacraments?

If so, why did you not publish the original Decree that prohibited Kirby from celebrating the sacraments in the Diocese of Meath?

The allegations made against Dom Mark Kirby that are now a public reality by the publication of this statement on the website of Silverstream Priory shows that Dom Mark Kirby was credibly accused; the accusations were sufficiently serious for An Garda Síochána to investigate and for a file to be prepared and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. Objectively, you would accept that the failure to communicate to the public is a serious safeguarding failure within the Diocese of Meath. If not; why not?

Are you in a position to confirm if the Director of Public Prosecutions declined to prosecute Dom Kirby on the grounds of ill-health?

Who is the superior at Silverstream Priory? Is it still Dom Elijah Carroll? Of course, he is not a cleric, hence, he cannot exercise jurisdiction over clerics? Is this why the Dec. 16 statement was signed “The Monastic Community”? Why is it impossible to discover anywhere online (other than my blog) the identity of the superior of Silverstream Priory?

I am asking about the leadership of the community because in the 2022 calendar, I see that in the refectory at the top table there are two (2) chairs. Normally, the Prior sits alone at the top table: so are there two superiors at Silverstream. Is the current superior nothing more than a patsy for Dom Kirby? Is the current superior nothing more than a patsy for Dom Kirby, who, even in public disgrace, cannot bear to relinquish control of “his” community?

I loved the cryptic reference to the independent external canonical investigation. Was this investigation conducted by Abbot Brendan Coffey and the disgraced Richard Purcell? My readers would love to know. I also have it on very good authority that another investigation is taking place; but, I will protect its integrity at the moment.

Are you aware that the decision of the director of public prosecutions not to prosecute can be reviewed; and, if the review uncovers further evidence a prosecution can still be launched against Dom Kirby? If that is the case, is this statement on the website of Silverstream Priory, ill-timed, ill-judged and an exercise in stupidity, and driven by the desire to raise funds?

The statement makes reference to an investigation that has been completed by the Charities Regulator. By return, are you happy to provide me with a copy of same from my blog or would you prefer I wrote to the Regulator in Dublin for a copy of same?

With prayerful best wishes in this grace-full season of Advent,

Your brother bishop,

+ Pat Buckley.

If the monastery is of diocesan right the statement needs to come from the bishop. This isn’t rocket science.
The way everything has vanished off the internet is at best peculiar.
What work do Benedictines do?
Well we don’t all abuse school boys. Some of us spend our time removing records of what we’re up to from the internet.

It was mentioned on yesterday’s blog about “the enduring popularity of Lough Derg”. It will be interesting to see how popular it will be after the pandemic is over. Many of the regulars to Lough Derg will no longer be able to do the three day pilgrimage and most people under 60 won’t go. It might easily go the way of all the seminaries in Ireland – closed!

Like

It’s kind of reinvented itself through the soft, one-day pilgrimages, and will probably end up as an ordinary retreat centre, with the USP of being an island. The numbers for the traditional pilgrimage have fallen year on year, even before covid. It could be used as a scouts/outwards bound type place.
Although it’s run by Clogher diocese I’m not sure if Clogher owns it. During the plantation the islands and lough were stolen and given to the Leslie family. Pilgrimages continued on and off, depending on how tolerant a mood the Leslies and local Protestants and the state were in.
When Sir Shane Leslie converted to Catholicism he handed the island back to Clogher, but I’m not sure if it was an absolute gift, or a free lease with ownership retained and it reverting back to the Leslie family in the event of pilgrimages ceasing.

Like

With the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry viii and Thomas Cromwell especially 1536-1538 (so before plantations) pilgrimage was abolished.

Following the statement, are we to assume everything at Silverstream is above board, and total income estimated at €6,434,973 for 2014 through 2020 has been properly accounted for. Also, the former prior is morally and ethically above reproach, and readers had no right to mock him or doubt his integrity? Asking for a friend.

Like

Despite their vow of poverty and Francis-style stunts of using jam jars for glasses at meals, Silverstream seems profligate. That income shared among the 15 monks in the community would be an expenditure of €429k per monk. The Visitation found that the priory spent all the money as it came in, with no reserves policy. Where does over €6m go in a year in a community of 15?

It is hard to believe the stupidity of the leadership at Silverstream by placing the statement on the website. It just invites further scrutiny.

I was just astounded to read that Kirby is now listed as a priest in good standing. Deenihan had to have given permission for the statement. But the question is was he aware of the intention of the community to publish this statement on their website. You are asking some interesting questions about: who is the religious superior? That is important for safeguarding and accountability. Keep banging that drum.

Pat your note to Deenihan asks some difficult questions. If the “monastic community” is now stating that Kirby is in “good standing”, does that mean he was not in good standing for a period? There was no reference to any restrictions on Kirby’s ministry on the diocesan safeguarding website. I think you need to direct your queries now Mrs. Marie O’Sullivan. I think a good question is: why were the restrictions on Kirby’s ministry not made public?

https://www.meathsafeguarding.ie/diocesan-designated-liasion-persons/

Like

The announcement is phrased in the indicative:
He is a priest in good standing.
It doesn’t actually imply there were ever restrictions on his ministry:
‘He stepped aside, the allegations have been investigated and he is once again a priest in good standing’.
I wonder whether it has been deliberately phrased as it has to say absolutely nothing while suggesting there was never anything to see here.

In answer to the question about the ownership of Lough Derg, I think it’s owned by the diocese of Clogher. Wouldn’t it be great if the Leslie’s did own it, as Clogher wouldn’t have to worry about its future.

Like

There’s an interesting chronology on the Lough Derg website. It says that in 1960 Sir Shane Leslie handed over full title to the island and lough to Clogher, which now has it in secure possession.
The website also reveals that in the 1950s around 30,000 did the 3-day pilgrimage. In the 1980s that fell to around 13,000. In 1992 the easy one-day pilgrimages started, then school pilgrimages started. Pre-covid the total number of pikgrims of all kinds is 11,000. They don’t say how many of those are the traditional 3-day ones. That seems to be on the way out.

Silverstream is a trad community connected closely to the increasingly radicalised Peter “Recognise and Resist” Kwasniewski. If the rumours are correct, a far more draconian crackdown on the old rites is coming very soon. If instructed by Deenihan, will Silverstream adopt the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite, according to the express wishes of the Holy Father for the entire Latin Church? Or will they, following Kwasniewski and other “luminaries”, resist, thus giving Deenihan a pretext for suppression?

Like

According to some commenters here all Catholics under the age of 40 spend all their time knitting mantillas so are unlikely to be much use in real life.

Like

There’s a pile of ifs there. The rumoured application document is said to be a demand that the diocese of Rome’s reading of TC be followed, ending all traditional sacraments barring the Communion. No suppression of the traditional Mass is envisaged, and not being able to baptise or marry shouldn’t be an issue for monks, unless they are exciting living secret lives.

Like

Very much so. However, as of now this is just rumour, although the doom mongers were somewhat right with TC and its not remotely honest claims about the survey to the bishops of the world. Most were content or indifferent.

The term ‘the traditional Mass’ as ised by you is a misnomer. The traditional Mass is that presided over by 99.99% of clergy.

Like

You have a sense of humour. The propers of the entire were rewritten by a committee of academic priests fifty years ago who were labouring gross misconceptions. None of them ever were parish priests. One thousand five hundred years of prayers and chant was thrown in the bin. We can now see its fruits. Catholicism is dead in its former strongholds like Belgium (4% nearly ten years ago) and it is dying here. A bizarre, disconnected three lectionary was invented and any periscope that sounded to Catholic was roughly edited. Nothing of it is traditional. The offertory is based on a Jewish prayer. Only one of the EPs (EP1 the Canon Versus predates the era, EP2 certainly does not, invented as it was in a Roman trattoria). Versus populum only became widespread in 1965, hitherto something only found in certain basilicas which had elevated altars. The music seems to date from the 70s, if there is music. It is noisy and intrusive, with few moments of silence, replacing the many way of participation (whether Rosary, personal or following a handmissal) with droned responses. What of the smashing of sanctuaries, the tearing up of altar rails (which, if taken with jubé screen, date back almost to the beginning), the dumping of fine altars and other marblework in skips (done in Kerry by the paedophile and thief Eamon Casey, but by others too), and the painting of stencilled walls with beige or magnolia? These once fine churches were paid for with the pennies of the poor. A result of that was that the poor largely abandoned the Church. None of this was even called for in the Constitution on the Liturgy except moving the altar forward. Anyhow, the New Order is not remotely traditional.

A concatenation of tendentious fake news items. EPII is almost completely based on the anaphora of Hippolytus of Rome. Your repudiation of Jewish tradition is breathtaking. Many collects from the past millennium and a half are in the missal and breviary. It’s proper that these would be complemented by new compositions. What people may need to pray for today may be very different from people’s needs at the time of Gregory the Great, Alexander III, or Nicholas V. You have shown your true colours. Not to be taken seriously. Traditionalist nonsense.

I somehow doubt +Deenihan would go full Franciscans of the Immaculate. The most that might be a requirement that both be offered as the Oratorians and others do. I doubt anything is going to happen. Silverstream seems to work and brings in money. Kwasniewski resists on the page, and it isn’t clear what he would do in reality. NLM has kept radio silence on Silverstream since 2013, which is interesting.

Dear 2811,
According to a Carmelite I met in Rome the 1970 collects were created to promote the agenda of Vatican II. He told me that such was not necessarily a bad thing. Just that the older collects were written as prayers, not as promotional items.
Of course this brings to mind Dom Gregory Dix’ assertion that Cranmer created his Communion Service to teach justification by faith. The difference is that Cranmer created literature.

You never know Silverstream might decide “join” the SSPX. Then we could have lots of wrangles about the ownership of the property and a court battle that would enrich solicitors and barristers, and Pat Buckley would have a field day blogging about proceedings from the High Court in Dublin. You think I am joking. These people at Silverstream are nuts and anything is possible for those who fetishise the so-called “old mass”.

Ask her to confirm if Dom Hildebrand Houser is a priest of the Diocese of Meath or is he still incardinated in the Archdiocese of St Louis, Missouri? He was ordained from the latter diocese. If you do not get an answer from Meath: direct your query to Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski.

I have no confidence in the Priory and I have no confidence in the former abbot. The bishop covered his Episcopal backside by reporting the matter to the Gardaí.
The diocese claim that the former abbot had been “imprudent,” and “lacked proper boundaries,” but that his behavior didn’t meet the level of sexual abuse. One can only conclude that the Gardaí/DPP have arrived at a similar evaluation at this time.

I don’t think ‘episcopal backside’ is very polite and is certainly not suited to the episcopal dignity. In future please refer to it as the episcopal rump. 😆

One should not conflate the Gardai and the DPP.
.
The Gardai investigated for well over a year, decided there was enough evidence against Kirby, and thus passed the file onto the DPP. The Gardai, therefore, wanted Kirby to be prosecuted.
.
Furthermore, that the DPP declined to prosecute is NOT an exoneration of Kirby, despite what Silverstream Priory and its sycophants want you to believe. The DPP can decline to prosecute for a whole host of reasons, including that the defendant is very sick. Kirby is well known to have serious medical issues.
.
The DPP can also decline to prosecute if a prosecution would endanger a larger case.
.
It is also possible that the DPP felt that the Gardai did a poor job of investigating. That, too, is not an exoneration of Kirby.
.
Dom Anderson, as the victim, has the right to receive from the DPP their reasons for not prosecuting. He also has the right to ask for a review of the case by an independent lawyer.
.
The Silverstream statement, therefore, could be a very foolish miscalculation.

Like

6:53, I wasn’t conflating but you are right to elaborate. The former abbot has not been exonerated at all. At the same time, can you say for certain that the DPP did not arrive at the conclusion that the case did not meet the level of sexual abuse?

DG 5:50,
The diocese says: “It is usual for a monastery to have a visitation at least every four years and, earlier this year [now last year], .. had its first visitation as a Diocesan Institute of Consecrated Life.”
A noted canon lawyer who is the executive director of the Resource Center for Religious Institutes, said that a visitation has historically been used “as an administrative tool to address a problem in order to remedy the situation.”
The diocese has been out to minimise the scandal and cover their own failings. They have been derelict for sure in their duties of overseeing the Priory.

None of us with any intelligence could ever excuse improper, abusive behaviour by any person/s in leadership of any kind. Religious communities obviously, as has been proven so frequently, fail in many regards in leadership, accountability and transparency. With social media platforms and availability of infirmation, once kept secret, accountability is beung sought and given but not yet in a fully honest way. This will come in time. With the falling off in religious and diocesan vocations and closing of monasteries and various scandals, very serious questions have to centre around 21st century evangelizing and new religious communities and what it actually means to be a believer. We all seem to be cognizant of the crises and the necessity for something new, reformative and different. Yet, we seem unable to define such visions and possibilities. Sometimes we make living the gospel very difficult, complex and confusing. There is no magic bullet or template. In the midst of all the Church’s crises, we try to remain trusting that God will bless those of us in parishes with sufficient grace to keep the memory of Jesus relevant in such a way as to be a source of inspiration and comfort. The reality is that whatever “pathways” or new “programmes” we devise will attract mostly the same constituency as we have at present. There is no doubting that apart from all the Church’s scandals, this pandemic has also affected the way once loyal and devoted adherents are now practising their faith. The pandemic has evoked many deep conversations about religious belief and our place, as Christians, as believers in a rapidly changing society. We need a language and an understanding of exactly what it is to be a follower of Christ, to be people of God. How to achieve this is the big question…Hope is a gift we must not loose in the face of adversity, criticism and challenge. The continuing analysis of persons in different narratives on this blog are sometimes very disheartening – because of their truthfulness – but also because they reveal a very unacceptable moral and spiritual malaise which poison the entire body. St. Francis, come back to help us rebuild the broken church!
