WONDERFUL NEW THREE PART SERIES ON HIV / AIDS FROM SKY.

EVERYONE should be interested in the history and development of the HIV / AIDS story – especially in the context of Covid – which can be managed and helped by the sane type of drugs that have turned HIV from being a terminal condition into a life long manageable condition.

HIV treatments have a role to play in addressing COVID and other viruses that will probably develop in the near and far future.

The new 3 part SKY series is called POSITIVE.

I have watched 2 of the 3 episodes and have been deeply touched by the film.

  • Positive will premiere on Sky Documentaries and streaming service NOW on World AIDS Day, 1st December at 9pm.
  • The Sky Original docu-series uses intimate testimony from some of the earliest HIV patients and real-life heroes to tell the tragedies and triumphs of Britain’s 40-year battle with HIV.
  • Positive tracks the recent social history of our country, from a nation mired in prejudice, intolerance and homophobia to a society that’s increasingly accepting of individuals’ sexual and gender choices. Through Positive, audiences will witness the making of modern Britain.
  • Across the three-episode run, the series takes us from the first recorded UK case in 1981 right through to the present day where prevention methods such as PrEP, and treatment methods leading to an undetectable status, are widely available and accessible to all, helping to create a world with less stigma and fewer new HIV cases.
  • The Sky Original documentary has been commissioned by Zai Bennett, Sky’s Managing Director of Content and Poppy Dixon, Director of Documentaries and Factual. The series is produced by the award-winning team at Arrow Pictures, where its Creative Director is John Smithson, the Executive Producer Lucie Ridout and the director Grace Chapman.

This is a very tragic and gripping story of 40 years of human suffering and great heroism on the part of many.

In the early 1980s I worked with a few young men dying of AIDS.

At that time there was a special ward for the condition in Belvoir Park Hospital in Belfast.

We all had to enter patients rooms in outfits like spacesuits. It was so scary and tragic.

I saw some lovely young people die very tragic deaths.

Thankfully there has been a total revolution in the treatment of HIV and now most patients with the condition live so long they die of things others die of – heart attacks, strokes, cancer etc.

Scientific progress allows people to live where previously they were doomed or, almost worse, had to endure quack treatments. I will look when it gets released outside the Sky infrastructure.

People living due to scientific advance seems the opposite of the Grim Reaper, but hey put any construction on my words you like if it makes you feel good.

Obviously, given what this blog is, we should pray for them too.

Thank God for advances in medication for those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. People were treated horrendously and considered a danger to all. We pray for all who suffered and died and for those who presently suffer. No life threatening illness is ever nice nor wanted and no illness that isolates us from others through ignorance or stigma is ever pleasant. We need to be kind to all. I have met some men whose lives were impacted by this illness and I am full of pity for them. God bless them. The letter from Archbishop Farrell is sensible, practical and strikes a balance. Incidentally the Archbishop personally sent cards to all priests with our names handwritten and signed personally by him with an ordinary “bic” biro. I am very grateful for his personal touch. This never happened before and it’s a beautiful card.

HIV is more manageable than diabetes and yet still has a stigma attached to it, whereas all these greedy priests still shovel endless cakes, buns, chocolates and fizzy juice down their gubs

I was thirty in 1981 and, although I had read about AIDS three years before in Time magazine, while I was working in the middle-east, but I never gave it much thought or did not understand what ‘Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome’ really was. However, by 1991 many gay people I knew or knew of, including close friends who should now be retired, had passed away. Despite it all going on around me, I was still looking for someone, going to gay bars, visiting gay holiday destinations, etc. but that gradually stopped as well as I grew older and by forty-five, all that was in the past too, more or less.

Morning Pat, thanks for highlighting and for your work in this area. I’m not a subscriber to the Sky Network but will watch when more widely released. Thank God for advancements
in treatment as well as the reduction in societal stigma.

Pope Francis has urged Vatican cardinals, bishops and bureaucrats to embrace humility this Christmas, saying their pride, self-interest and the “glitter of our armour” was perverting their spiritual lives and corrupting the church’s mission.
“The humble are those who are concerned not simply with the past but also with the future, since they know how to look ahead, to spread their branches, remembering the past with gratitude,” Francis told them.
“The proud, on the other hand, simply repeat, grow rigid and enclose themselves in that repetition, feeling certain about what they know and fearful of anything new because they cannot control it.”
“As a consequence, they neither learn from their sins nor are they genuinely open to forgiveness. This is a tremendous corruption disguised as a good. We need to avoid it,” he added.
Pax.

11.31: Of course priests are “pastoral workers” but time has m8ved in Pat. Lay people have been trained to act as pastoral workers whereby they wirk alongside parish councils and teams. They generally act as coordinators of parish/school sacramental preparation programmes. They sometimes are part of lityrgy/faith/prayer formation programmes in parishes. If you are a priest on your own the presence of such people is a blessing, mostly. I just wish we had many, many more such people in parishes. They are a bonus in parishes.

I rejoice that HIV medication has been a game changer in the treatment and transmission of HIV. However, I sense that in some communities it is treated as something that has effectively neutralised and eradicated HIV. Which, of course, it has not. Some youngsters appear blithely ignorant and careless about being on medication for the rest of their lives, and so take fewer precautions that they should. Taking any medication has side effects in varying degrees, and HIV medication are powerful drugs, which while having been immensely improved over the last couple of decades, will still have some negative side effects on those who take them. Yes, they will keep you alive, but they will also do other things to you. For example, observers will be aware that there is a distinctive look to some HIV people who are on medication, particularly facial changes in the fat and muscles distribution, as well as other physical changes in fat and muscles distribution throughout the body. Also, some changes in liver function and other things. These are powerful drugs bringing great benefits, but inevitably some side effects. So, while they are hugely to be welcomed, my appeal is that people are still very aware that HIV is something that will still have an effect on you, your health and your life even with medication. It’s much better not to get it at all in the first place. So, caution and prudence and good sense still need to be part of the picture. Again, though, I repeat that I rejoice in the achievement of science and medicine to help HIV people, so many of whom in previous generations were lost to me, to us……..

Your call to care and caution is vital and I hope people listen to you.

I’d be interested to hear more detail from you on the side effects you mention.

Like

You’re way behind the times. I have been on anti-retrovirals for 10+ years and have never had any side effects. I do t even know I’m taking them. Same goes for everyone else I know.

Loss of fat and muscle is a symptom of untreated HIV. . Maybe it is also associated with the original medications like AZT but I wouldn’t know about that.

Is he vanished? Last report, which was admittedly awhile ago, is that he was welcomed back to the Priory. Bishop Pat mentioned on this blog that there appear in photos to be two prior’s chairs in the refectory, which would be indication that Pervy Kirby not only there but that he’s being honoured as emeritus and founder, presumably with the knowledge of Bishop Deenihan.

This is why Daisy chain NI was created amongst clergy in belfast, to stop the need for them having sex outside the circle and risking the potential of sti related issues that would have highlighted their homosexual lifestyle. However, one priest has broke away from the chain and found love with a non clergy man and the rest of the chain are in a panic he may expose them to sti and/or exposure itself. The next few months will be crucial for the existence of this secret club.

I know that situation and in fact it’s different now. The poor priest is about to land on his arse for his boyfriend has returned to his ex-partner…….they were out for dinner the other night and word is that they are getting back together. There’s definitely something “fishy” about that situation. But the priest is a decent sort- he will be hurt but he won’t expose anybody.

It’s strange how tides turn, for years the homosexual priests were more at risk of HIV, now it is the turn of the heterosexual ones like Dallat who are at risk, or was he just experimenting?

The 23rd day of December. The penultimate day of our advent reading of the 24 chapters of the Gospel of Luke. There was a noticeable glimmer of a stretch in the evening, 10 days on from the earliest sunset of the year.
23:34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

23:42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

23:47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.”
