DID RAY BROWNE’S BULLYING CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEATH OF ONE OF KERRY’S MOST LOVED PARISH PRIESTS?

Dear Ray,

I have been contacted by several people and priests in Kerry to express their real anger about your despicable behaviour towards the late Fr. Kevin McNamara.

BROWNE AT FR MC NAMARAS FUNERAL

In fact, many people with good reason in the Diocese of Kerry believe YOU HAVE BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS due to your cack-handedness that bordered on bullying in your desire to force Fr. McNamara out the parish of Moyvane before the diocesan changes in Kerry of July 2021 were announced.

And, this begets the legitimate question, do you, Bishop Ray, use your episcopal authority to bully the priests of the Diocese of Kerry?

Your despicable and malign attitude was a source of great distress and anguish to Fr. McNamara. And, this upset and stress had not ameliorated with the passing of time. In fact, many people hold with good reason believe that the fact you forced Fr. McNamara from Moyvane played a significant and contributory factor in his untimely demise.

I have established to my satisfaction that during June/July that you [Bishop Ray] gave Fr. McNamara an ultimatum either to move from Moyvane to become the PP of Glenflesk or face the bleak possibility of not having a priestly assignment in the Diocese of Kerry.

I understand that you asked him to consider taking on a parish that had a conspicuous level of debt, which Fr. McNamara declined. I further understand that the late Fr. Namara was deeply reluctant to leave the Parish of Moyvane. And, I have learned that some parishioners had offered him the monies to engage the services of an experienced canon lawyer.

However, Fr. McNamara felt bound by his promise of obedience and his desire to serve the people of God to acquiesce to your request. However, he did so with the greatest reluctance. It was conspicuous that he was one of the few priests moved in the diocesan changes of July 2021. It begets the obvious question: why did you not place the previously London-based Jesuit, Fr. Carmody, SJ as the parish priest of Glenflesk or assign him to the debt-ridden parish?

CARMODY

Using any yardstick, Fr. Kevin McNamara was a well-liked, popular, respected, and deeply loved priest in Moyvane. During the pandemic, while complying with the law, he continued to minister to the people. His move to Glenflesk was greeted with shock and dismay by people in Listowel, Tarbert, Glin (Limerick) and Ballydonugue. This is confirmed by the number of very positive articles that have appeared in the press since his passing.

I cannot recall people queueing in the middle of the day to pay their respects to a deceased priest in a church. This is all the more remarkable given how secular in Ireland has become in recent years. It is a testimony to the remarkable priestly ministry of the late Fr. McNamara.

FATHER SEAN JONES

Is not the real reason you wanted to move Fr. McNamara — you wanted to teach him a lesson and show him that there are consequences to challenging your authority?

But, I have been lead to believe his difficulties began with the ordination to the priesthood of Fr. Sean Jones. And, in a cruel twist of fate, Fr. Jones, was present in Moyvane for the reception of the earthly remains of Fr. McNamara.

In fact, when, I first published on my blog the images from of Jones’ Grindr profile that had been sent to me by an ex-seminarian from Maynooth, I understand that Fr. McNamara urged the greatest possible caution and prudence about the priestly ordination of the then Deacon Jones.

But, you ignored his concerns with alacrity. However, Fr. McNamara did NOT oppose the ordination of Jones. I am told that Fr. McNamara was of the view that if Jones were serious about being a priest, he would agree to serve in the diocese as a deacon for a number of years to take the heat out of the scandal. But, you proceeded with the ordination of Jones in his home parish of Moyvane with a haste and secrecy that had not been seen in the diocese since penal times.

BROWNE HIRES SECURITY FIRM IN CASE I TURN UP TO KING PUCKS ORDINATION

Because, I had been blogging about the allegations surrounding Jones, I was not surprised to learn from a friend of Fr. McNamara that a security company had been hired to “police” the ordination in Moyvane because there was a fear that I would disrupt the priestly ordination of Fr. Jones in Moyvane.

Moreover, I also know that images of yours truly [Bishop Pat Buckley] were distributed to the security men so they could accurately recognise me..

Is this true? I know I am asking a rhetorical question, however, I know it is true, because this was a source of considerable shock to the late Fr. McNamara, when he was told same by a diocesan official.

One of my informants tells me that he was told face-to-face by the late Fr. McNamara that one of the reasons you ordained the now Fr. Jones was that the aforementioned Fr. Jones had made a sworn declaration that he [Jones] was not the individual in the photographs that I had repeatedly asserted with good cause was Deacon Jones.

When it was put to him [Fr. McNamara] by a reader of my blog that you [Bishop Ray] ordained Jones to the priesthood to spite me [Bishop Pat Buckley], he did not disagree with that observation.

Of course, it is appropriate to highlight at this juncture that my allegations about Deacon Jones were never denied publicly. Instead, the Diocese of Kerry decided to provide the thin veneer of credibility to you as the Ordinary by Jones’ statement. When, I contacted the diocesan offices in Kerry, I was surprised to be told that it was “unkind” of me to publish the photos from Jones’s Grindr profile; however, nobody within the Kerry diocesan offices denied it was the then Deacon Jones.

Subsequently, I have learned that a considerable amount of pressure was put upon you by the current President of Maynooth, Fr. Michael Mullaney to ordain Jones. Is this true?

I understand from other priests in the diocese that Fr. Jones keeps a very low profile in Tralee. He is conspicuous by his absence. When, he [Jones] comes to face that most just of Judges; do you think Fr. Jones will be lamented and will he be the subject of such positive media coverage?

Do you think people will queue in similar numbers in Moyvane to lament the passing of Fr. Jones? On that point, do you think the late Fr. McNamara would approve the ordination of Mr. Moriarty to the diaconate? Is he still languishing in a presbytery outside Killarney waiting for you to make a decision about his future? We all know how hard it is for you to make decisions.

In conclusion, I feel it can be legitimately asserted that you [Bishop Ray] had an animus towards the Fr. Kevin McNamara. And, of that you should be deeply ashamed.

Your platitudinous words on the occasion of this death belie the thinly-veiled contempt you had for Fr. McNamara during his life. Perhaps, you should reflect on his extraordinary life as a priest and attempt (if possible) to imitate his zeal and apply same to your own ministry; because, there is scant evidence of your zeal, thus far, within the Diocese of Kerry.

May we all attempt to animate the Christ-centred example of Fr. Kevin McNamara’s priestly ministry.

The only time the church treats anyone with dignity or respect is in the womb, and the only reason for that is it promotes the cruelty and indignity with which it treats everyone else.
Sean Jones’s alleged pictures will follow him round for the rest of his life and he won’t even be able to undress at the doctor’s without knowing the doctor is thinking ‘Your bum really is hairy, just like the Grindr pictures Pat Buckley published’.

So much tension over parochial sppointments could be avoided if the RCC adopted the system of advertising a vacancy, interviewing candidates and appointing the best of them. To remain as long as they and the parish wished.

I recall reading the condolences for Fr. McNamara at the time he died on R.I.P. They are a tribute to a great human being who choose priesthood as a life of service. A man, a priest who never lost his humanity and who saw the Divine in everyone. He inspired, helped, touched and shaped many, many lives. All age groups admired him and felt they had a soul friend, a true carer, a good listener in Kevin. They also found God in him. The truth is that priests are meant to accept where they are asked to go. It’s a tough call if you are fulfilled in a place and have to uproot and leave. Yet, it’s what we sign up to but there must be space for negotiation and dialogue. I do not know the full reality of his death but I think it’s dangerous to conclude in such a way as to suggest The Bishop was complicit in his death. Surely there’s too much unproven speculation in this email? There are innuendos abiut all kinds of decisiins znd personnel as to belueve sime have a disdaun for rhe Bishop and rather rhan confront him they pass on their stories to Pat. Is any Bishop truly accepted by clerics? Does Pat have a kind wird about any bishop apart from himself? They all get slapped down by Pat. Fr. Jones should be left alone. If the bishop of Kerry had concerns about visiting hecklers or intruders, he did the right thing by having a security firm to protect people. The thought of a marauding van load causing trouble begets questions about their nasty behaviour and intentions. Its a mad world. May the saintly Fr. McNamara pray for his colleagues from heaven. .

It’s not just me that says you can “linger” as deacon before elevation to priest; it would be good for any that are thought to be in good odour to do so, so as to not mark anyone out, which would boost all.
The first JP II reintroduced latent imbalances in the image of sacramental confectioning, which had traditionally been kept low key and were certainly in the process of righting themselves post-Council.
In the “bad” days we “went up” as little as we wanted, if we wanted, because we wanted, and not because some butch looking personage wanted us to want to look butch. For some strange reason Holy Mother maintains areas of inconsistency in spirit rather than just let them grow out.
Surely everybody paid off their church building years ago? Is this a euphemism for something else that was going on? My family weren’t “catechised” so tell me, are Catholics really paying to consume Hosts?

The “bad” days as you say are still with us only worse, it’s a bit naive of you to say everybody paid off their church buildings years ago. Have you not noticed they have been to busy wrecking perfectly good churches by “reordering” them and putting parishes in debt for years. So it’s not consuming Hosts Catholics are paying for.

Like

I call them “bad” days because for me they weren’t; church was free and easy. (I wasn’t personable or lively enough to be head hunted as altar kid.) Apologies, I have not been aware that reordering had to be done at parish expense. My comments are mainly to take the heat out of Catholic intensity. The worst of JP II and his successors (and predecessors) (and subordinates) is we can’t tell what they are at till it’s too late. Hence the huge value in stepping back to figure everything out for ourselves. Perhaps church should have nothing do with popes.

I was surprised two see that there are only 53 non-retired priests in Kerry diocese. Two of those are desk priests (the bishop’s secretary and Seamus O’Connell), who could easily be replaced by lay people and the priests concerned be put into parishes.
The lack of ordinations and paucity of priests in Kerry website attests to Ray’s failed and uninspiring leadership.

Like

The lack of ordinations and the paucity of priests may in part have something to do with the Kerry leadership, but the fact is that young men these days just do not see the priesthood as a healthy, happy, integrated and balanced way of living their lives. They instinctively understand that there is something toxic about the Catholic priesthood and so do not come forward. They find other ways of living out their lives, in service if they are so inclined. The priesthood is avoided for the most part, and only those who have personal issues and character p profiles which are attracted to such a toxic way of being put themselves forward. Add the lack of vocations to the increasing age profile of the Catholic priesthood, which moves towards extinction because of retirement, deaths, MIA, prison, disappearance etc., there will soon be no priests for a bishop of push about ! But, is anybody taking any notice ?

There’s a lot of stuff to absorb in your post today, + Pat. However, at foundation it has to do with an arrogant bishop who is prepared to use the authority and power given to him to push through his agenda, and in particular to frustrate you and your concerns about Sean Jones and anybody else who appeared to support those concerns – including the unfortunate Fr Kevin McNamara who is the ostensible subject of your post today. We see this kind of behaviour on the part of bishops every day. So many of them seem to think that the authority and power given to them by their position and ordination as bishop is untrammelled and unlimited, and can be used at their own discretion. This leads to arbitrary and unjust use of their authority and power, and that of the Church, in situations and against people for whom it was never intended. In other words, they so often use their authority and power to advance their own personal agenda and for their own vindictive purposes. This is why the Church really does need to reform its institutional structures, so that we move away from this kind of personal authority and power and develop a much more democratic, consensus, synodical way of organising and running the Church, dioceses and parishes. The wonder of this blog is that it continually throws up the faults of the Church, be it clericalism, abusive bishops, outdated and hurtful theologies, careless pastoral provision, self-interest amongst priests and bishops – the list could go on. Today’s theme about abuse of authority and power is just the latest example. Change is long overdue. If the Church does not address these issues, then the Church will implode. These are existential challenges to the Church. When will people take notice ?

PREFACE
1. Divinely sent to the nations of the world to be unto them “a universal sacrament of salvation,” the Church, driven by the inner necessity of her own catholicity, and obeying the mandate of her Founder (cf. Mark 16:16), strives ever to proclaim the Gospel to all men. The Apostles themselves, on whom the Church was founded, following in the footsteps of Christ, “preached the word of truth and begot churches.”It is the duty of their successors to make this task endure “so that the word of God may run and be glorified (2 Thess. 3:1) and the kingdom of God be proclaimed and established throughout the world.”

Fr McNamara was a truly remarkable man. He was a one-of-a-kind priest that enriched the lives of so many people due to his authentic faith. He faithfully fulfilled the promises he made at his priestly ordination. Of that I have no doubt. He was ordained a priest for the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. He had some difficulty with the congregation because he called out some misbehaviour/misconduct. In effect, he was a whistleblower, and this ultimately led him to leave the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart.

I know for a fact that Fr McNamara had a very promising meeting with Bishop William Lee of Waterford & Lismore about a pastoral assignment in the diocese when he left the congregation. I also know that Bishop Lee at the time was very open to Fr McNamara having an assignment in the diocese. However, in revenge for his whistleblowing his religious superior denied him a letter of good standing. In fact, they attempted to traduce his good name. And as a result Bishop William Lee felt unable to offer Fr McNamara an appointment in Waterford & Lismore. Fortunately, Fr McNamara had contacts in Kerry. Bishop Bill Murphy to his very great credit was very kind to Fr McNamara and supported his incardinated into the Diocese of Kerry.

When Bishop Ray announced the diocesan changes in July 2021 – it left twelve parishes in the Diocese of Kerry without a resident priest. Bishop Ray who is indecisive about everything displayed a rare zeal by insisting that Fr McNamara leave Moyvane to head to South Kerry. It is not unusual in Kerry for priests to be left in parishes for long periods of time. Fr John Lawlor was the parish priest of Ballydonughe (North Kerry) for over 15 years until his retirement – it is now one of the parishes without a resident priest.

Parishioners were particularly generous to Fr Kevin because they appreciated his ministry and Ray was keen to get his hands on the surplus in Moyvane parish bank account. I could write a lot more about the DISASTER that is Bishop Raymond Browne. Unfortunately, the diocese will be dealing with the poor choice of Archbishop Brown until 23 January 2032, when he turns 75 and has to submit his resignation.

Oh I love it, 12:15. Anything which shows the church up for what it is is fine by me! 😘

@12.15pm Once again you demonstrate your prejudice and ignorance. How very foolish. I suggest you do not visit this blog until you have learned that homo and hetero sexual desire does not differ, save for the sex of the one desired. That is a basic fact that seems to have escaped your all too brief education. Instead of being abusive because you do not like your ideas challenged, take time to learn and correct them. That will benefit readers of this blog, gay deacons, priests and lay people.

It is really not nice to be calling Bishop Ray Ban a fucking twat even though he actually is a fucking twat. He ordained Sean yet in one week got rid of 3 good orthodox sems..Is there any wonder there is a crisis in the Church when gobshites like him become Bishops? Fr Kevin was a man of the people with a wonderful personality and charisma who will always be remembered but Bishop Gay Browne certainly won’t!

Now the real animus against Ray Browne has revealed itself. He decided not to proceed with the seminary formation of three people decribed as ‘orthodox.’

It’s very sad to see Sean Jones, Ray Browne and Mullaney backstabbed Mark Moriarty. I’m told Mark is taking a Hairdresser’s Course now.

Like

Dearest Pat.
I have it on good authority that Mark Moriarty will not be ordained. All the games he has played have finally caught up with him – he has been deemed immature and thus he is unsuitable to live life as a celibate and chaste man.
In Christian charity, Bishop Ray has given him a place to live and will help fund further studies in order for Mark to get a job as a layman.
Bishop Ray made a mistake with Sean. He will not make the same mistake with Mark.
End.

12:04. I am a parishioner of St Patrick’s and I have no vendetta against O’Neill but he is the worst PP we have had in 70 years. He is a phoney who is only interested in sucking up to the bishop. He is a social climber who is destroying our parish. The soup kitchen fiasco was the final straw, not to mention his alleged bullying of two,and now a third, newly ordained priest. This man is more interested in clericalism than he is in our parish. As you seek to defend him, name one positive thing he has done for our parish. The sooner he is gone the better

No way man, that’s similar to what happened to me after I blew the whistle and they knew I had evidence. They sent letters to all the parishes, containing lies, and the cathedral security were given a copy of my picture from my file (they knew me well anyway and we’re very embarrassed – they still let me go in for Mass and Vespers).
They do things like this for effect (oh, look, they had to call in security or so-and-so, for you-know-who.
It’s called deflection — to make it look like YOU or an OTHER person(s) are the real problem.
Thank goodness for people are more the wiser nowadays.
I can’t even have a private phone conversation or go for a walk in peace because of these evil and unscrupulous individuals, Bishop Pat.
But all will be revealed soon, I trust x

Dublin archbishop: ‘Radical change is coming in the church’
Sarah Mac Donald, Catholic News Service WORLD MONDAY 3RD OF JANUARY 2022
” DUBLIN (CNS) — After a year at the head of the Archdiocese of Dublin, Archbishop Dermot Farrell said, “Radical change is coming in the church,” which will see a renewal of energy and new forms of ministry.
“With a powerful commitment from clergy and lay faithful, across the full range of the life and ministry of parish communities, we are going to experience a renewal of energy and the adoption of new forms of outreach and ministry,” the 67-year-old archbishop told Catholic News Service. He also said he believes change is already happening in the church’s structures all over the Western world.”

Wise up – it’s the trolls that are out to create havoc on here.

1{A Psalm of David, when he changed his behaviour before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he departed.}
I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.
I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
They looked unto him, and were lightened:
and their faces were not ashamed.
This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.
O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.
The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.
Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?
Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.
Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.
The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.
The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.
He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.
Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.
The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate…

Only four days into 2022 & another layer has been peeled off the Ozone – previous Graduates include Carey & Fitzgerald – unlikely the current mover and shaker at the Ozone Club, Martin Blake, will be returning from Sabbatical. That place has a reputation for completely turning the heads of priests who already might be a bit wobbly. Not helpful to the recruitment drive.

Bishop Buckley, forgive me if this is not relevant. A friend of my late wife and I went for lunch last Sunday in a well known Ballymena hotel. It is well known for a good carvery on Sundays and weekdays. In pranced two priests, escorted to a quiet table in the corner and the staff ran round them like a dog at a fair. I The queen of sheba wouldn’t have got a look in. I said to my friend the meal was probably being paid for by the collection that same day. My dear wife would be turning in her grave. Why do hotel staff treat priests like VIP’s. One of them ate soup plus an egg mayo the greedy hog and the other had salmon. Both had main courses with plates overflowing as if they hadn’t eaten in days. I made notes on my phone memo. Two bottles of red and the annoying thing was they were in a quiet corner and I couldn’t hear a word. Both had brandies and when I asked the waiter who they were he said one was a Ballymena priest. After they were leaving I went outside and saw them drive off. I noted the car registration and have reported this to the PSNI. Clearly a case of drink driving.
