PRAISE AND CONDEMNATION FOR FATHER JIM DOHERTY RECENTLY DECEASED GLASGOW PRIEST.

More than 170 people paid tribute online.

One person said: “A great man with a great sense of humour and time for everyone. He will be missed. RIP Fr Jim.”

Another added: “What a man! A great laugh, was able to relate to everyone and wasn’t afraid to say what he thought.

“A family friend who will be a great loss to everyone who has ever met him.”

A third wrote: “A lovely man, who did a wonderful job for many communities. Rest in peace Father Doherty.”

ANOTHER TRIBUTE

Of your charity, please pray for the repose of the soul of Father James Doherty, RIP who died last evening in the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice.

Fr Jim (or “Big Jim” as he was affectionately known) was a priest of the Archdiocese of Glasgow and a long-standing friend of Saint Aloysius’ parish, especially during his early retirement due to ill health.

Jim was ordained in 1979 and served in Saint Peter’s, Partick; Saint Laurence’s Drumchapel; Our Lady& St Mark’s, Alexandra; St Robert Bellarmine, Pollock, and Saint Vincent de Paul in Thornliebank.

Jim went on to become Parish Priest in Saint Vincent de Paul’s before taking seriously unwell with leukaemia. Despite this illness taking him to the absolute edge of life; Jim’s robust personal will saw him recover and eventually return to ministry as Parish Priest in Saint Joachim’s, Carmyle.

In his retirement, Jim was a friend to many and a trusted counsellor to those who sought his wise pastoral advice. At the heart of Jim’s life was his relationship with Jesus Christ, developed by a keen love of theological and spiritual reading and firmly supported by his great devotion to the Mother of God.Our sympathies are with Jim’s sisters and his many close friends and acquaintances. He will be greatly missed.

One parishioner, Tricia McCallion, paid this tribute on social media: “Such sad news. Fr Jim was a legend. He told the best stories, he was so funny and a straight talker too. I hadn’t seen him in a few years but what a brilliant priest and person he was. Rest in peace Fr Jim, we’ll not see your likes again.”

A FELLOW PRIEST WRITES:

Pat, we must say we had to laugh when we heard all the “nice things” about Fr Big Jim Docherty who died recently in the Archdiocese of Glasgow. More lies, we mean spin from the archdiocese and the sheep.

Jim was indeed well-read, articulate and intelligent regards to theology etc, however, it’s sad he never really put any of it into practice. He actually wasted his God-given talents. He ate him self alive on so many levels and was full of anger, jealousy, resentment and a vicious desire for revenge. He was quite a sad and pathetic figure. Jim was the archetypal donegal mammies boy who had Mammy issues his whole life.

For years he had nothing to do but mince about the diocese with his message bag like a big lassie. He was laughed at. He was a thorn in the side of the church in Glasgow and to three archbishops in a row: Winning, Conti & Tartaglia. He was an embarrassment to the church.

Jim was very angry and unhappy with his sexuality and lack of career in the church. He never came to terms with either sadly. He was a nasty and evil man. Due to his lack of charity, vicious tongue, vulgar language & sexual innuendo he was not liked by many people and certainly many priests especially those whom he bullied and were afraid of him. He is no loss to the presbyterate nor the diocese.

He also seemed to have a particular ministry to young men of a certain vintage. He wined and dined out in the finest of Glasgay restaurants on a very regular basis and clung onto the coattails of rich people and retired single men on big pensions. He also lived in a Grace and favour house that was purpose built for him. He was a donegal priest to his fingertips.

He was a regular visitor to Canon Anthony Gallaghers clergy/laity dinners alongside Jim’s acolytes Deacon Christopher Morris, Mr Mark McGuire, Primary School teacher and Anthony OConner the brother of Fr Liam OConner and nephew of the Glasgow Safeguarding Officer.

Jim was a predator who never once observed celibacy since we were in seminary together and justified this as a priest as each of his Parish Priests in Drumchapel, Househillwood and Thornliebank were in sexual relations with their house keepers.

Big Jim, Canon Gallagher, Deacon Christopher, Mr Mark McGuire, Mr Anthony OConner and a few single retired teachers from St Aloysius Jesuit College gather near that parish church on a Sunday afternoon for tea after the High Mass at which the College Choir Sing!!!

He is no loss to the presbyterate nor the diocese. A sigh of relief was heard when he died not only from bishops and priests but also from many young men, business owners, restaurantaurs and retired Catholics with good pensions. May the good Lord be more charitable and merciful to Big Jim than he was to others.

Duplicitous lifestyles seems rampant among clergy. What’s the quotation from the Book of Revelation mentioning ‘hot’ ‘cold’ and ‘spew.’

As someone here in Ireland who never knew the man or heard of him I couldn’t possibly pass judgement. No doubt there are trolls who will of course not hold back and freely spill their venom. I will just say that the rather nasty comments made about this deceased man is the view of ONE priest who seems to have a thing about Donegal. I wonder what kind of a priest he himself is and is there a jealousy issue about Fr Jim’s obvious popularity with people?
There seems to be imbeded jealousy issues in general with clergy everywhere. Whatever his shortcomings in life may he rest in peace.

Interesting. Has it ever crossed peoples minds the hypocritical sermons from some
priests at funerals of deceased victims of clerical abuse. Some sham duplicitous priests
with insider knowledge must have known of clerical abuse including covering up. Small wonder, nowadays, everyone is going to ‘heaven’. What matters most is what is written
of us by the LORD, and not obituaries in newspapers.

I remember a priest speaking about the a deceased Irishman at a funeral in England having been the victim of clerical abuse. He spoke very sincerely I thought and addressed the trauma experienced. The relations turned on him at the burial and bollocked him. You are damned if you do and according to @7.24am damned if you don’t.

Sounds as if this man was a right bastard. No doubt damaged by being brought up, trained and living in a culture that did little or nothing to discern his gifts and talents, or indeed his evident lacks of character, but which just pushed him forward in to ministry where he was able to live out in dysfunction all of the failings that he had, often at a heavy cost to those around him. Evidently a deeply unhappy man as well. He’s not alone. How many deeply troubled priests have you ever met, who cover up deep fissures in their personality, character, and behaviour by all sorts of dysfunctional behaviour – alcohol, sexual, abuse, anger, authoritarianism, bullying, nastiness, bitchiness etc. etc ? I know so many. At the root of this is a clerical culture that does little or nothing to help a priest to fulfil his potential. He is shoehorned in to an odd and weird way of living and relating, especially through mandatory celibacy, without much effort to try and help him make sense of that and live it faithfully. What happens if that he very quickly begins to find ways of circumventing it, which leads him in to a parallel and duplicitous life which lacks essential integrity. This damages him and damages those and everything around him. In addition, he lives and works in a clerical culture which is subjected to a medieval, outdated hierarchical system which puts him at the untrammelled influence and autocratic authority of bishops and seniors. No wonder this man was a frustrated, angry and damaged individual. What a waste of a life.

The vehemence of your post suggests that you are very touchy about people pointing out the dysfunction of the clerical culture and particular clerics. I guess because you know what I’m saying is true, and you simply don’t like being confronted with the truth and reality. I guess you like to live in denial. And lash out when you are confronted with the truth.

By the way, focussing on Scotland, has there been any developments in the Deacon Christopher Morris case ? Is there any sign that his bishop and his formatters in Oscott have taken any notice of the concerns that have been expressed on this blog ? If I were they, I would go very cautiously and make sure they do all due diligence before they ordain this chap. There will be trouble ahead if they do not do so and are absolutely sure that this man will be a priest who is faithful to what the Church requires of its priests. Mind you, he won’t have many good role models to look up to, I think. Finally, while Morris may think that everybody is being horrible to him at the moment, I think I can assure him that the concerns that have been expressed and the desire for them and him to be seriously considered and examined are very much to his advantage. It would be a disaster, both personally and for the Church, for an unsuitable candidate to be ordained. If he is not deemed suitable, he will be thankful in years to come that he has been spared a life which he is not suited for. He needs to think ahead a decade and think about what life will be like for him.

Yes Clyde Street spin has acted so fast on the announcement of Jim’s death and of course it is the Master of Ceremonies that has likely put it out rather than comms as father Anthony Gallagher is part of the in crowd of Clyde Street.
They the in crowd of Clyde Street have still to inform the Clergy and laity of the former Dean and Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Father Joseph Murphy who died last Friday and burried on Monday in Cork that has yet to be mentioned but then Father Joseph was a dedicated priest with NO issues.
Pray on this the Feast of Saint Mungo that Glasgow gets a New Archbishop and he clear out the Curia and many of the half million salaried staff (42) and four on huge salaries at Clyde Street.

I didn’t get to my keyboard yesterday and so missed the discussion re TLM. I would like to put in again my “pennyworth”.
“Mass of Ages” is a marketing ploy on a par with “Ploughman’s Lunch”. Both phrases are the product 20th Century salesmanship and have nothing to do with the “Mass” or “ploughmen”.
I asked previously for somebody to tell me why I was unable to use my 1940s’ Missal to follow a recently attended Latin Mass Society event. Surprise, surprise!! Some commentator on this blogg unkindly told me that “I was too old ” to have things explained to me.
My question is genuine. I made use of that Missal from 1947 to 1974 and no matter where I was in the world I could use it to serve at or follow Mass which was always just “Mass”.
Do the TLM supporters think that what they wear and do can add to the Sacrifice made by Christ on Calvary? They are just wasting the time God has alotted to them.
I remember a “beach preacher” confusing me as a child by proclaiming in answer to an assertion from his listeners, “Right is wrong” is what I heard and had to have my dad explain the difference.

The Holy Week was radically changed in the 1950s for no good cause with the secretarial support of Annibale Bugnini. Barring that or a new Feast or Common, I don’t believe you. I normally use a 1925 hand Missal. The differences are slight to non existent for 95% of the year. This has to be contrasted with the repeated changes to the NOM over 50 years. A priest has so many options, a hand Missal is useless. The New Mass could be called the Mass of Atheists for it has had that effect in Europe.

Hi Bishop Pat. The Priest who sent you this incorrect and bitchy information is well known to us and will be dealt with by the new Archbishop. He is a trouble maker and needs our prayers. Unless his unacceptable behaviour
stops, I will name him on this blog. He hasn’t a good word to say about anyone unfortunately. Hardly a key quality of a Pastor. For the avoidance of doubt, here are a few facts.
1.Fr Jim did not dine out in expensive restaurants. His friends owned a restaurant and he went there infrequently and always paid his way. His bill was never expensive as he did not drink alcohol.
2. He was not full of anger or resentment. Quite the opposite. He was annoyed that so many of his brothers were living double lives and getting away with it and he called it out.
3. He was perfectly comfortable with his sexuality and lived a celibate life style as best as he could. He was no predator and this is a complete lie.
4. He said his prayers and had a great devotion our Our Lady.
5.He rarely attended clergy dinners as most of his friends were lay people.
6. He did not associate with the Latin Mass or with seminarians.
7.He did not live in an adapted grace and favour mansion. He lived in a small and modest home that was adapted over the last few years by Social Services to make life easier for him – as would be the case for any of us.
8. He had no desire to climb the ladder and wasn’t interested in becoming one of the hierarchy in the Archdiocese or beyond.
Fr Jim was a sinner like the rest of us, but he did far more good than bad in his life. He really suffered over the last few years with poor health but remained as positive as possible and continued to support as many people as possible. We should all pray for the repose of his soul, I know that would be his wish.

10.24: Thank you for this honest appraisal of Fr. Jim’s life which I share. The poster is indeed a very troubled, vinductive soul. He needs much therapy. Isn’t it so unfortunate and so morally and ethically wrong that any malcontent brat can script a letter to Pat, in the knowledge that it will evoke bitchiness, innuendo and lies. It is so repulsive. This good priest is just buried and we think, encouraged by Pat, that it’s ok to thrash his name and integrity in this manner. There is something stinking about this mind set…

This “priest” uses encrypted email addresses and therefore it is difficult to pin point him but surely Bishop Buckley must have a real email address and contact number for him.
They do not think the writer is a Priest they think it is someone rejected by a Bishop for seminary and an ex lover and within the Glasgow Metropolitan area.

12:40. I hope you were being sarcastic when you said to speak to Eugene O’Neill. Why would anyone in their right mind want advice on being a priest from this man given that “they” made him do another year in the seminary as “they” doubted his calling. O’Neill is certainly not the man to speak to unless you just want to practice clericalism

Historical Chronology is important for such an assertion 😂😂😂. I remember, it was 1994 in the Post Grad kitchen ( I think that’s what it was called) in the Irish College Rome , in the hearing of Niall Coll, Donal K was visiting ; in conversation I expressed the view that in Irish Church matters the Media were the only conscience the Irish bishops ever had: “ Oh Bill, you’ve changed” he said , quite alarmed. I told him I hadn’t….I was just coming to realisation. The RCC is a club; global; omertà or else !!!!!

If Rome gave a damn about Ireland, the likes of Niall Coll, Paddy Connolly, Eugene Sweeney, Eamonn Conway and Pat Crean Lynch ( and Joe Murphy would be forced to take it) would be bishops… their brains and critical faculties are too large… their “ compliance can’t be relied on….. Not since the late 1970s has a creative mind got the dunces hat in the Roman Church.

Fr Jim’s reflection to the Scottish Parliament in 2005.
I thought that I would begin with a bit of my own ecclesiastical DNA. It contains a bit of everything under the banner “Smile, you’re in Carmyle”—I am the parish priest there. Contemporary Catholic doctrine tells me that I am a minister of the gospel of Christ to all people. Vatican II tells priests to spend ourselves in pastoral work. Well, I am not spent yet, having worked in parishes for 26 years, in hospitals, homes, schools and a drug rehab. I have survived leukaemia and I am now dealing with heart failure and sharing the joys and sorrows of people who have been hurt by the insults of experience. The words of the song “Both Sides Now” come to mind.
In this magnificent building, at this moment of energy for Scotland in our lifetime, it seems absolutely timely—the way forward—for all of us to see the priority of it all. It seems to me that this place is not about maximising the national product or state power, but about transforming attitudes and making our common humanity prevail over all other considerations.
The work of the Parliament in promoting equal opportunities and inclusion and in ending discrimination in all its ugly forms rings well with, for example, the New Zealand Catholic bishops, who say also that it is a matter of justice for someone in any relationship to leave what they want to their partner. Having a morality and moralising are two different things. My church has been trying to get its own house in order since it began. John Paul II used the image of a glasshouse for its accountability.
Both politics and religion get a bad press, even if they seem to be a standard fitting in human societies. Falling numbers in the pews or at the ballot box may indicate disillusion. However, everyone can make a difference, like Rosa Parks or the people in Carmyle who, in the course of an evening and morning last weekend, raised £1,200 for a children’s project in the forgotten Congo.
Benedict XVI has coined the phrase “positive secularism” to try to end the feuding between religious and secular extremes. Dissenting voices at a recent synod show that we are a broad church with new elements and movements and not, as you might think, reduced simply to the touch of purple, red or white.
All metaphors take you so far, but I have been attracted to Christ’s image of the plough opening up and drawing a furrow, never looking back, just believing that the soil will open to the seed and that in God’s own time there will be a harvest and granaries. A friend of mine at a lecture in Edinburgh wanted to ask the question, “Where is the optimism today?” You and all of us are part of the answer. This is both the pride and poetry of Scotland symbolised by this and all other resources trying to make our country truly diverse and multicultural.
I end with this lovely line from the Apocalypse:
“Behold, I make all things new.”

Interesting question and very telling (as well as pompous, indeed parsonical) answer from 7:47.
If you go on to an internet forum about, say, DIY, you will find everyone there is into DIY or at least thinking of doing a project. You can tell their level of expertise and involvement from the way they talk about it.
On here you do get a number of lay people expressing different levels of involvement in church and religion and you can tell their involvement from how they talk. However the vast majority of comments on here can best be characterized as clergy gossip and I think the source for them is very obvious.
If you were to ask me if I’m a plumber I would say no but the deafening silence or hissy fit you get when asking here if someone is a priest is all part of the don’t-talk-about-it clerical culture. Oh – I have been told by several priests that they all read the blog and gossip about things said on here.
So basically you can tell priests by the way they talk like priests – for example Bella isn’t a priest.
Today I would estimate the proportion to be about 60 to 70% clergy. Other days you can tell the blog is being used to settle scores between priests.
In fact what makes this blog the wild frontier of religion blogs is the (almost) uncensored spilling out of clergy conversation.

Like

8.38

You’re right that there are some here who use clerical-type language, but that’s because they are ex-sems (mostly deranged). Priests read the blog, but few priests comment. A few priests who used to in the past have stopped because of the deranged abuse they got, especially from someone who used to comment frequently here and who drove many people away, both priests and lay people.

Like

8.38: You have absolutely no proper analysis or data to make the conclusions you make. I contend that the majority of commenters are ex seminarians and priests. There are some disgruntled clerics using the blog to spew out their dissatisfaction with the church, priesthood and colleagues. There are others who simply despise all things Catholic. It’s a blog for the nastier side of humanity. It’s putrid and poisonous at times, bringing out the truly bad side of people. Many on the blog are in need of therapy.

Knew Father Doherty well as a priest and laterally as a friend. He didn’t fit into the cold distant socially awkward mold of many priests. His heart was huge, had great intelligence and humour (who said mass should be solemn) and he served and looked after the people in his parishes no matter who you were. When my mum was ill at home for 2 years, he asked us for NOTHING. Instead he visited every week and gave her the sacraments when the local parish priest didn’t and wouldn’t sadly. He longed to stay in the ministry and his visits helped him do that. So your grudge/bitter stance is beyond off. Eternal Rest Father D. You are much missed.

Pat, with all intended respect this type of blog and disgraceful contribution by your insider “priest” do nothing for you. There are legitimate and serious concerns to be addressed through the dioceses of central Scotland, but this stuff only serves to de-legitimise them.
Whoever your insider is, he’s one of a number of priests clearly failing their people, care only for their own empty positions within the church and, frankly, should be removed with immediate effect. They clearly draw issue with those – named in previous blogs – who do well by and nurture their communities in Christ.
May the faithful in the parishes of these “priests” find refuge with our true shepherds, avoid these poisoned souls and starve them of the attention and cash they crave.

My father was a school friend of father Jim . Jim christened my brother, he married my wife and I and christened our children. Never once did Father Jim judge me ! He did on occasion say “the boss will sort u out” he never withheld his wisdom. He was inclusive, happy & welcoming of all creeds and religions to his Church . As for his grace and favour, his house was a wreck and with the good grace & determination of his many loyal friends, it was made fit for Jim and far more fitting for someone who had served the Church and several communities for years, than a run down room in Nazareth house. Yes he had an opinion on the hierarchal structure of the Church and commented when he thought things were unjust, this might have upset the senior clergy but he answered to God. If we are discussing grace and favour , why do you not bring up the million pound house in Newlands funded by the Church?? This thread was put up by a sad lonely hateful individual that I am struggling to believe is a man of God! It’s fascinating watching the comments unfold regarding the priests account of Jim Doherty. It’s confirmation that people are blind, stupid and sheepish .That they only see what they want to see and are so far removed from themselves and self deceived that they can only recognise the self same deceit in others. The poor priest who wrote this post knew Jim extremely well and has been nullified by well meaning idiots who want to do exactly what the church continues to do on a daily basis. That is, deny the truth, protect abusers and God help anyone who dares to speak the truth. It’s reinforced for me that the Catholic tradition of ‘ you must never say anything ill of a priest still prevails. That the clergy and the laity alike still band together to cover up the truth about certain clerics and that they are excellent at ‘ dummying up’ when it comes to taking responsibility for their clergies actions .Unfortunately, the post was spot on and very real and a hundred per cent true. You see, a con man doesn’t turn up saying I am a con man, watch out ,you may get hurt.A con man turns up bearing gifts, smiling, telling jokes and winning your trust .Then once he has conned you, he deceives you.Sad to say many people in the archdiocese knew the con man and were incapable of seeing through the con.Either through naivety or stupidity. While others had the misfortune of being privy to the actual person who is described in this post.Sadly, it’s too late to do anything about the abuse that certain people experienced at the hands of Jim Doherty .But it’s fascinating now to watch the laity faithful to the bitter end not as much as questioning what has been written. It’s sad mainly because of the nature of abuse. You are abused. You find the courage to open up about it and the abuse is confounded by people denying the reality of it.Unfortunately, the victims are left to sort the whole damn mess out themselves.Because most people can’t face the truth about themselves or others.

Please stop giving us the poor family business. It’s a well known fact in clergy circles and among sections of laity ‘in the know’ that some of Jim’s siblings and their families couldn’t stand Jim and hadn’t spoken for years.

Funnily enough, people like you Mary are quick to call out “con man” “abuser”
You say you are abused, then abused for speaking up – but why have these people waited until now to “stand up” to Father Jim?
I suspect it is because he is no longer here to defend himself, or clear his name?
No doubt you and the other abusers (yes, you are just as guilty as you abuse through your nasty words) on this post will rear your ugly heads when other priests pass away.
Maybe instead of hiding behind your keyboard, do something about “it” while its going on?
Or would that require evidence?
Would you be proven wrong?
As for you Rod, you don’t know much about the family, or you would know that the family, with a small exception, where all very close to Jim.
Families have their ups and downs (not that anyone should be posting them online for all to see) but I can assure you, your information is VERY out of date.
I cant believe that in this day and age, in a world where we are all told to “be kind” and where we really do know better, that “adults” on here are spreading and feeding into such vile and nasty posts.
I pray to God the family don’t see this.
James is at peace now – you are only hurting those left behind.

Lies, lies and more lies. The reason people don’t speak out is endorsed by the ignorance of people like you who wouldn’t know where to begin to deal with the problem. The reason people don’t confront the people involved is precisely because people like you want to believe that clerics are squeaky clean when the evidence is stacked against them .And you may just find in the near future that there will be more about said priest to come out.You are talking out of ignorance.I and Bishop Buckley and many others are speaking the TRUTH….When I read Bishop Buckleys post I almost cried because I thought “ finally justice has been served” .you DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOURE TALKING ABOUT .And should seek the truth and it’ll set you free. You want to believe the lie because you’re brain washed along with millions of others. The first sign of brain washing is when you tell the truth to victims, they vehemently deny the truth and stuck with what they’ve been brain washed to believe. And just to conclude , I have prayed for Jim Doherty for thirty years, encouraged him to lead his own life many times ,be honest about himself and set himself free. But he was incapable of doing so because he was a raging food addict, people pleaser, depressive and pathetic man.He was actually a poor soul and I for one will pray for him until I pass because I knew the whole person .Not the facade he portrayed to the outside world in order to feel accepted to the outside world. And sadder than that,to idiots like you you had you been up close and personal would have seen the pain that the man endured behind the scenes because he was frightened to be himself through fear of rejection. So don’t ever assume you’re right because you’re a hundred per cent wrong

Mary, from the sounds of it you see yourself as a good catholic.
This is laughable.
You have no morals, no decency, no insight into your own character.
You sound to me like a vile, 2 faced creature.
So you spoke to Father Jim, you “encouraged” him to be a “better” man. Yet you cant wait to tear him apart now he is gone.
You’re post sound like you are referring to his sexuality, which quite frankly was no ones business but his own (maybe you are homophobic)
The earlier posts had some very serious allegations that you appear to be endorsing?
I could not live with myself if I thought someone was doing any of these things he was accused of and I took no action.
You accuse me of not knowing how to deal with the problem – yet you have sat on what you believe is information, and done nothing until now – when quite frankly it is too late?
Believe it or not, for me this has nothing to do with religion.
I couldnt care less if your a priest, the pope, the Imam or an atheist.
Its about morals – which you seem to be lacking.
If you are as upstanding and strong minded as your rant would have us believe, you would have done more, had you had the evidence.
As i have said before – this man is dead, gone, none the wiser… but he leaves behind a family, friends and colleagues.
You are only hurting them.
How would you feel if you knew when you go, people will torrment your loved ones and make their life a misery while they are trying to grieve?
Why punish them?
I suggest if you have any more scathing information on anyone, you act while they are alive, and follow the correct channels, rather than waiting til the accused have gone, and more “victims” have acumulated
