The Bishop, Martin Hayes had circulated the priests saying he was taking a leave of absence “on medical advice”.
Some of the priests MADE THE MISTAKE of praying for their bishop at Mass.
And the diocesan authorities were enraged!
Priests are bound to pray for the bishop at Mass.
Priests always pray for the sick at Mass.
But they do are not allowed to pray out loud for their sick bishop ???
Of course we are all entitled to medical privacy. It’s Article 8 of the Human Rights Convention
Mind you, Judge Horner ignored that right when he made my illness public in a Belfast Court room.
So we do not need to know about the bishop’s diagnosis or treatment.
But an Irish Catholic bishop is about as public as a person can be.
The priests and laity are entitled to know their bishop is unwell and on leave.
By not saying the bishop is sick it has given rise to widespread speculation.
Is it an ingrown toenail? Is it a heart attack? Is it a mental breakdown? cancer ? syphilis?
This is all part of the RCC’s modus operandi – secrecy, lies, cover up, lack of transparency.
Going on leave when you have been a bishop of a place for only a year is suspicious.
People are, understandably wondering if a scandal is being covered up.

The silliness of all this is the attempt to silence people. Lack of transparency. There’s absolutely no issue with a bishop taking sick leave, regardless of how long he’s in the job. Bishops and popes are human beings.

+Martin Hayes was the first Irish bishop at a climate change conference (the hot air from that likelier a bigger cause of global warming than 1000 Chinese coal fired stations). Apart from his industrially focussed degree, he has an MA in Theology (Ecology and Religion). I doubt therefore he was secretly offering a private traditional Mass. Perhaps scandals. Anyhow, I think I will defy those authorities and pray for him.

Would it be completely wrong to think that this absence might have something to do with a Safeguarding issue ? I mean, it seems to follow the usual playbook of the Catholic Church when dealing with priests who have been accused of something like that – they just disappear, they aren’t mentioned, no information is given, everything is kept under wraps. Then months, perhaps years, down the line you suddenly find that the matter has worked its way through and the police or other authorities make a charge, or say there is not charge to be answered. How many priests do you know who just disappear like this. I know lots. There is something fishy going on here, something more than the tardy mention on him being ill. Watch this space.

My friends & I only recently became aware of your blog, Bishop Pat & it is such a relief to have verification that the things we could see & experience that were/are going on in the Church are also recognised beyond the narrow minded sphere of the small congregations we live in around the country. We were all brought up as regular mass goers but all generally find that many of the people that do go to Mass in our communities are best avoided in the interests of ones physical and mental well being & that some of them use this contact to cross boundaries that are unacceptable for anyone to cross in normal society & that frequently breach the rights & dignity of others by those who definitely “know better” but try it on under the auspices & umbrella of the Church & with the support of clergy. That said, we are now enjoying your daily online mass and wonder if you will be opening branches of your Larne Oratory in other parts of Ireland? Thank you & God Bless you for all that you do to create a safer space for those of us that do not wish to be entirely pushed away from practicing our religion by the bad eggs who have infiltrated it as described above.

The modern Catholic church is profligate. Millions have been raised for Maynooth and the former seminaries, including the one in Belfast, and countless millions have been spent on reordering churches, new vestments and in abuse compensation (with the abusive priests also spending wildly on reorderings, eg Weakland).

Bishoo Hayes has for whatever reason chosen to be private about his absence. I believe if it is to be a long term absence, his Diocese needs to know and have a right to know. It is very wrong for any of us to assign motives to his absence especially those which are sinister in their implication re: safeguarding issues. These words alone in reference to any cleric are very loaded and almost designed to create the narrative of criminal wrongdoing. We should wait until the full truth is known before judging or speculating. It is, I believe, contrary to natural justice to engage in biased speculation simply because he’s a Catholic Bishop.

Bishop Hayes sent that kind of email to his Clergy and Monsignor Liam Kelly will administer the Dioceses Of Kilmore as Vicar general.
The Bishop does not want to make his illness pubic however he should be more open and transparent.
Archbishop Kevin McDonald stood down very early and was young as he has cancer but he is still alive but he did the honourable thing so I think maybe Bishop Hayes is await results.

A young priest committed suicide in Birmingham – 15-20 years ago. My God the Omertà around his suicide was remarkable and exposed a deeply dysfunctional and incompetent clergy (at ever level). The priests first name was Sean and the clergy just buttoned up and bottled it – the priest was never mentioned again along the lines of don’t mention the war – for so called ‘experts in humanity’ they are truly shite when the shite hits the fan and run for cover with no sense of explaining or teaching or pastoral responsibility to help people during a difficult time.

Thomas Woods, a police constable based at Greater Manchester Police’s Salford unit, was arrested on Wednesday.

Pat in my Armagh Archdiocese we have a great number of priests who live highly excessive lifestyles. Some holiday in ‘quiet’ destinations. Some love lavish dining. Some are real drama queens. Others drive very regal cars. There are those who love their fashion labels.
The mere inconvenience in Tyrone might be the dying neighbour needing a visit.

We are now seeing a two tier priesthood.
Tier 1: probably 70+, reasonably principled, most are dutiful and to a degree relatively pious. Declining sharply.
Tier 2: wild, double-life clergy on the whole, seek celebrity status and seek attention at public events at any cost. Morals, for most of these men, don’t exist.
