This Blog was able to definitively confirm yesterday that Fr Martin Mc Alinden died of Gastro Oesophageal cancer and not of the illness speculated on the Blog on the 14th of this month.
The Blog was misled by a clerical colleague of Fr Martin’s and obviously not for good reasons.
A death certificate indicates what cased a person’s death – not all their illnesses
For instance, if I have Parkinsons Disease, high blood pressure bit die of a heart attack my death certificate will say Cardiac arrest.
I know the Blog caused some anger and some upset and we are sorry.
The original Blog has been permanently deleted.
As a sign of our good will in this matter we have made a donation to the hospice which cared For Fr Martin at the end of his life.
This Blog will always withdraw, clarify and apologise for anything it gets wrong.

Deaf Guy wisely warned of the perils of speaking of the deceased. From reading the deleted blog on the day, the question on my mind was had the death certificate been inspected? Everyone was ignoring that point on the day. Maybe from previous experience, people thought it was a story being teased out and that the “known death certificate” was going to be subsequently presented as proof?

About McAlinden: he may not have died of Aids, but did he have HIV ? Some of the reporting and commenting, whilst attesting to his good character and abilities, did indicate that he was actively homosexual and that he had HIV, which he will have contracted through his sexual behaviour and activity. If so, as a priest, it would be right to point out the inconsistency and hypocrisy in this man’s life – as we see in the lives of so many clergy. So, + Pat, it is good of you to clarify that he did not die of Aids and to retract, but do not retract everything just yet until you are absolutely certain that he was not an active homosexual, was HIV positive, and was living a hypocritical life in contradiction to his public promise of celibacy and chastity. I doubt if the man was a saint, and there is no need to canonise him in your apology. Thanks.

He should also delete the Dissie comment about the young lovely teacher who was brutally murdered and also other comments about deceased priests which are not based in fact. I find Seamus boring at times but I totally agree with him supporting the Deaf Guy. Families are grieving and you stick the boot in with unfounded comments. It has been mentioned several times before that strict moderation is required or this blog is going to get itself into trouble.

I think Pat should have done his retraction as a standalone item (standing apart from the Benedict thing, which could be a separate item) and not allow any comments on Fr McAlinden. A blog owner can simply tick “no comments allowed” on a particular item. That way, we would avoid comments such as the one above, which undoes the retraction.

10.34: To print any uncorroborated stories about any person after death is cowardly. It is an act of abuse. Grief at any time for whatever reason is very conflicting, painful and life changing. The pain of loss can last a long time. Allowing strangers on a blog to say what they like about this deceased priest is an evil act. To ascribe a speculative cause of death so publicly is twisting a knife into Fr. McAlinden’s family. Irrespective of the nasty bias and prejudice spoken against Fr. McAlinden, his life of ministry touched many, many people for their good and well-being. His ministry cannot be deleted because someone or persons on this blog believe him to be unworthy of recognition. We live in a merciless society and sadly, it is often so called professed Christians who are most merciless, as we see on this blog. I know the GOD of Jesus sees both the good and the bad, the right and the wrong, the efforts, kindness and caring of our hearts and accepts us in all our broken humanity. Where there is proven wrongdoing of any kind on this earth, we trust the civil courts to adjudicate, not lynch mobs on laptops! I agree with naming, criticising and confronting all evil and abuses. Always, and have called them out at all times. I do not however agree with this blogs definition of justice or “concern” in the case of Fr. McAlinden. May he enjoy the vision of God and may his grieving close family be comforted.

Would somebody please answer my question: Was McAlinden HIV+ and was he sexually active ? I get it that he didn’t die of Aids. And I get it that some people think he was a good, kindly and holy man. But what I want to know is, was he a hypocrite living a duplicitous life in contravention of his promises of celibacy and chastity taken in a pubic forum in which he was a public figure. Among the clergy it is believe that Martin was gay. A number of large have named a priest Martin slept with and gave him HIV.
We have no evidence that he was HIV.
We do know now that the cause his death was cancer.
I have his death certificate.
Today I apologised for ASKING THE QUESTION whether he died of an AIDS related illness or not – because he did ot and my question left the truth unanswered.
My apology and donation was sincere and was not done out of pressure from anyone else.
I believe when we are wrong we should say so and also make a practical gesture to show our sincerity.

Wait until they have to do a review of Francis’ time in Argentina. Benedict’s failures of management and outlook in respect of abusive priests being kept in active ministry will pale in to insignificance compared to what Francis was doing in his home country. No wonder he hasn’t returned there since settling in Rome. I reckon he would be likely arrested by the Argentine authorities.

Poor Benedict retired from his office in light of the enormous sexual abuse crises in the church. The report highlighting his moral failures in confronting these crises lessens the impact of his pontificate. I pray for all victims/survivors of abuse, that they will be truly heard, that justice may be given. I continue to read the profound writing a of Poor Benedict but that reading and my appreciation for the depth of theological and spiritual insights is overshadowed by this report. I just hope that all who are hurt and in pain because of denial, obfuscation, lack of charity and compassion and complete transparency can find healing and justice from the Church. It is my fervent prayer. I pray too for Pope Benedict.

Re Jim Doherty’s Funeral.
You are right. The custom is normally in Scotland that a pp is buried from his last parish. However it is custom not obligatory.
In this case the size or lack of it (St Jochaims) had nothing to do with choice of church.
It was Jim’s personal wish as he spent a lot of time there in later years. He loved the aesthetics and the acoustics of St Aloysious.
Although not a Jesuit himself he was close to that community and had many friends there.

Do you know of a bishop or pope in the RCC who did the “ right thing” pertaining to abuse before their perennial cover up was exposed. The Irish bishops for each of their dioceses got a settlement from Church and General in 1987…. to let that insurance company of the hook for what they had calculated was coming. Mr Mulvihill, I don’t know of any bishop or religious superior who did the right thing before being forced, and I understand the policy to have gone as far back as John XXIII. This is actually the real scandal people miss when they protest that the proportion of abusers in the RC denomination was the same as any other walk of life. No other walk of life had an international policy of covering up crime, which makes it worse. Cover ups totally did (and do) happen in many Protestant churches but never at an international policy level and mainly from expediency.
Proportion of abusers: estimates are all well below 10% and not unusual.
Proportion of bishops who happily covered up: 100% and outrageous.

4.31: Robert, your experience of Dom Mark is yours alone. Thankfully it is a positive one. You should hold that experience precious in your heart and allow no one take it from you by their agenda. Lots of accusations are made against people on this blog, some accurate, others speculative. In the case of Dom Kirby, it would appear that boundaries were crossed vis a vis his interactions with some of the community and in areas of management. Whatever the extent or nature of these transgressions, Dom Kirby has many adherents to his spirituality and prayer. To Pat, he is a repressed homosexual and a “fraud” , therefore unacceptable and unsuitable in any capacity. I’m thinking of pot, kettle, black….Robert, continue to be in contact with Dom Kirby because I believe Jesus would want that attitude of your mind and heart. You are living that way of Jesus. In a curious way goid people like you are necessary to walk with and accompany sinners. Aren’t we suppose to forgive not just once but 77 times? Aren’t we called not to judge, not to condemn, not to hate – and to be compassionate as our Heavenly Father is compassionate? As a pastor, I keep the ideals and vision of Jesus before me. I fail them often. If we were to write people off as undesirables because of their sinfulness, failures and moral transgressions, we’d be very lonely people!! Let us not be so facetious or presumptuous about our own superiority against those who fail and who fall down! God help us all.

There is a perception that if you practise the gospel virtues of mercy, forgiveness and compassion, somehow you are a co-abuser and condoning egregious, moral failings. Not true. Yes, Jesus whipped the rope in the Temple as an outrage at moral and spiritual hypocrisy but he didn’t beat the offenders with the rope. As professed followers of Christ we must emulate Christ: to seek to correct wrongdoing by truthful confrontation, by challenging others about their wrongful, hurtful and destructive behaviour. As ministers of the gospel, surely all clerics must keep Christ’s way to the forefront? Civil courts are there to deal with proven criminal abuse and wrongdoing. No blog should act as judge, juror and executioner. The level of vindictiveness and cruel judgments against some on this blog is reprehensible. The attack on Fr. McAlinden is unforgivable. Pat, I’m shocked that you fell for the menacing character who gave you false information. That person needs psychiatric help. This type of a dangerous, lying “source” will do this again. It is a rotten, evil trait in anyone.

The RCC takes good and well intentioned men….. and completely mangles them in the satiation of their own needs for its glorification. Eamonn Martin is essentially a very decent man, but is subsumed in the organisation for the emptiness he feels and it fills. Cathal Daly was too far gone. Sean Brady always held his own humanity. Great harm was done. Ray zinger and Bergoglio gave it all in entirely selfish terms. Pat Buckley was saved…. Reflected in the love of his partner; no mean feat.

I don’t see the Munich situation as what precipitated the resignation of Benedict. Cardinal Marx, present Abp of Munich and Freising, the present Pope and so many others have grave failures relating to safeguarding as diocesan ordinaries. It still remains strange that the Vatican was cut off from the Swift payments messaging service (something that happens when some State really offends the US) just before Benedict resigned, only for the connection to resumed when Francis came to power. His Vatican Bank reforms were wide-ranging, as were his reforms to allow for a clear process of dismissing errant priests. Even the SSPX used these reforms when Francis temporarily made Bp Fellay a judge for a suspected errant priest. Perhaps Benedict just tired of it all and just wanted to return to his studies. The Vatican is a pit of snakes for anyone with responsibility there.

Our focus should be less on legaccy cases but on the actual current abuse is still happening in the Vatican and around the world under Bergoglio. That should be stopped now, while it can be stopped. Sadly we don’t have a tiime machine to go back to Munich in the 1970s but we should do something about abuse now, when action can be taken.
If only Bergoglio showed a tenth of the energy he devotes to hammering faithful traditional Catholics, to eradicating abuse. He has plenty of mercy for Inzoli, Zanchetta, Barros, McCarrick and all the rest.

A perv priest from overseas was restored on the authority of a junior official, not +Ratzinger, something which the report contests. Paper doesn’t refuse ink. It found failings with Cardinal Marx, a middling amount with a predecessor, so handily the retired men could be mostly blamed. It’s also is an irony given the anxious efforts Francis made to restore priestly faculties to Mauro Inzoli who had been convicted of molesting boys on the intercession of the extraordinarily lewd, now retired, Coccopalmiero and the belligerent Don Pinto (outside his legal sinecure he verbally attacked supposed critics of PF). This had been a recent and reported on scandal. Inzoli wasn’t an unknown from somewhere else, like in the German archdiocese. Given Italian law there was the confirmation of the verdict, but Francis was restoring faculties to a convicted child molester. After the verdict was confirmed, Inzoli went to prison. Maybe he says his prayers there. Hopefully he gets the treatment prisoners worldwide mete out to pervs. +Ratzinger could perhaps have done better with this priest, who had a very shady past (which if disclosed would have precluded pastoral duties) before coming to the archdiocese, but +Ratzinger did not knowingly restore faculties to a convicted pervert.
Things have to be compared and contrasted. ‘Spirit of V2’ people will never contemplate criticism of the paladin Francis, but others can be moderate and detached.

Gerard Mc Quillan ( layisised priest) collected primary school children from the gate of their schools. He walked them up the staircase of the Parochial House Armagh after said collection. No one stopped him. Sweeney used to relay to me that Mc Quillan used to keep Alsatian’s at the back of the house in Armagh. As it turns out; he was checking my awareness ( I had none). In fact , McQuillan kept Labradors…. For the purpose of deceiving children. No one stopped Mc Quillan…. and anyone of those clerics with an average I.Q had to have known that all was not well; particularly the Parish Priest of Armagh; the Archbishop. Happened wholesale all over the Vatholic world; Africa, Asia and South America yet to happen.
