THE SINGING PRIESTS SING IN LARNE TO CELEBRATE THE 70 TH ANNIVERSARY OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II

SEMINARIAN HOMOSEXUALLY BULLIED IN THURLES COMMITTED SUICIDE.

MICHAEL DEEGAN is the name of the seminarian who committed suicide in the 1994 in St Patrick’s Seminary, Thurles.

He would have only been 20 / 21 years old and he was found hanging behind a curtain in one of the seminaries lecture halls by a visitor to the seminary.

During his time in the seminary he was the victim of extreme homosexual stalking and harassment. People were putting sexually explicit notes under his room door and were leaving homosexual pornography on his bed.

One night he was found in a very bad emotional state on the corridor by a fellow seminarian who is now a priest of an English diocese. For now he wants to keep his identity hidden so we will call him FATHER A.

Father A brought Michael and the pornographic material to a member of staff whom we will call FATHER B. Father B sympathised with Michael, agreed that the material and bullying was awful and held on to the material.

WILIE LEE – THURLES PRESIDENT

We do not know if Father B reported the matter to the seminary president reported the matter to the archbishop of Cashel or indeed to anyone else.

I supplied the IRISH INDEPENDENT newspaper with the story and supporting evidence. The journalist involved even interviewed Father A.

The journalist then, in fairness, asked the president and Father B for a comment. The presidentq said nothing and lawyers for Father B denied that he had not been approached by Michael and Father A – and basically threatened the IRISH INDEPENDENT with a law suit.

However I was well aware from the time I heard this story that there may very well be a criminal aspect to the story. I contacted the Garda and started that ball rolling.

Father A is 100% sure about his version of events and has made a full statement to the Garda.

I have also tried to contact, in as sensitive a way as I can, members of the Deegan family who live in Birr, Co. Offaly. To date I have not heard back from them.

They may not want such a painful wound reopened?

But I have been haunted by the thoughts of the plight of Michael since I heard the story. It is a question of JUSTICE as well as a human question.

Surely poor Michael cries out for justice from beyond the grave.

We can also not allow his death to be another horrific secret that the Irish Catholic Church wants to keep buried – just like the bodies of the 700 babies the nuns buried and hid in a sewerage tank in Tuam.

Jesus told us that a good tree CANNOT bear bad fruit.

I would like Michael Deegan’s death and suffering to be the subject of a thorough Garda inquiry.

And if there are guilty parties they need to be made feel the weight of the criminal law.

I’m told that at least one of Michael’s torturers was ordained a priest and still works in an Irish Catholic Diocese!

How does this man live with himself?

What kind of harm is he still doing?

I have given his name, Father B’s name and several other names to the Garda.

Let us hope that Michael’s tragic death and suffering will not go unpunished for too much longer.

I just think it is so upsetting to imagine what Michael Deegan went through. If people know information and are refusing to come forward, they are just as guilty as the bastards who brought Michael to his unfortunate death. I would love to see a day where those animals who tormented Michael are named, shamed and, with the help of God, prosecuted, convicted and locked away never to see the light of day again. #Justice4MichaelDeegan

I agree with what you say. It is most distressing for me to learn about the suicide in Thurles. It really puts a cold shiver down my spine because I did my 4 year teaching Degree in St. Patrick’s College, Thurles (graduated in 2018). While I was there there was no plaque of memorial in acknowledgement of poor Michael Deegan. Students including myself and others were walking around those very same corridors without realising the horrors that took place there. There was obviously a big cover up. Students and college staff have a right to know what happened there and of course there should be a memorial plaque on the college grounds. Also distressing that Fr. Tom Fogarty would have known all the details of the incident and was college president for many years in the college. The information should be put on there. There is no news archive with details of the incident. Little or no information online. It is terrible. I remember walking the very same corridors with other classmates. These corridors upstairs are where the seminarians would have been living. We could see the rooms with beds and sinks, etc. Very disturbing and upsetting to think what went on there. Why didn’t he just run away? I’m guessing he was frightened he wouldn’t be believed. Did he not have family that want a full investigation into what happened?
I don’t know how he died. Maybe he jumped from the floors above. Everything has been covered up.

Poor Michael. That is so upsetting. During my time there, Father Tom seemed like a very genuine person and a gentleman to his fingertips. Perhaps he has already made peace with the family and was requested not to ever talk about it. I have no idea, but regardless of the circumstances there should at least be a memorial plaque erected on the college premises. I imagine that the new college staff are not even aware of the scandal and the current president Dr. Finn O Murchu. It gives me the creeps to think that I was physically there on the premises for four years and never knew anything about it. This was obviously meticulously covered up almost like the CIA or M16.

The suicide of Sean Farrell was hushed up in Birmingham many moons ago – he wasn’t a seminarian he was a few years ordained- complete lack of pastoral care and clearly felt unsupported and alone. This much I know – no one mentioned his name again – classic clerical manoeuvre it was as if he never existed. Don’t mention Sean was the 3 Line Whip and remains so to this day.
Why? I’m not sure – clergy are remarkably gifted at zero dialogue or discussion about difficult issues and want anything that reflects badly on them closed down pretty quickly.
The dead speak from beyond the grave for justice or lessons to learnt and for openness and transparency.
What are they afraid of?
Like today’s blog there is a backstory of lack of pastoral care, incompetency and keeping stum so that the true story remains hidden.

@5.29am People have been very quick to easily dismiss your question about the sudden death of Fr Tony Corr. I find it an interesting coincidence that Fr Tony Corr was ordained from Thurles in 1994 the same year Michael Deegan sadly took his own life. I am in no way connecting the two whatsoever but it is a weird coincidence when someone like you is questioning the circumstances of Fr Tony Corr’s sudden death at 57. A former CID detective friend once told me that with his work he never liked coincidences

Sean was introverted and shy whilst at Oscott. His best friends were Michael Gamble (Birmingham) and David Gassor (Plymouth). He liked whiskey (Irish), but this seemed to be in moderation when he was a student. He would have been a student under Fr Michael Raiswell (Shrewsbury), also quiet and introverted who taught liturgy and not long after leaving, Oscott hung himself. There was also another seminarian for Birminghan, Martin Smith, who joined in 1993 and left a year later and committed suicide shortly after. He was pretty flamboyant and a good looking lad. I wouldn’t say Oscott was a harsh place, but it lacked warmth and empathy. Pat McKinney and David Evans were rector and vice-rector – both were odd, and both are now bishops!

Mr Nugent, the more correct way to conclude your comment would be thus: ‘I’ve spoken to ex-seminarians who have recently left Maynooth and in the view of one/some/all of them there is still the same environment of coverup, abuse and turning a blind eye.’
You show poor judgement to write your comment the way you did. If you have evidence of criminal activity, you ought to know what to do with it since you present yourself as a man with a mission.
One would expect that you would have better first-hand knowledge of seminaries you attended and belonging to your former religious order. Have you made similar comments in a public forum about these?

Like

Im afraid Robert that your division of Irish Catholic affairs into two two distinct forms of abuse, the sexual abuse of infants placed in the care of clerical institutions – schools, orphanages, corrective institutions; and then young people who had entered into seminaries abused by their homosexual professors. But in fact this is the same abuse perpetrated on different non-consenting groups. You and Pat Buckley both think that that is the limit of the problem, while in fact that is really just the same problem, but that is to ignore an abused group that is far larger and who have nothing to do with sexuality, one of them with strong motives not to speak out as they would not be believed and the other not to speak out as they would shame tge family.

The irish government got the Church to pay up 1.6m Euros to pay for the sexual abuse scandal of the innocent, but now we are coming to those who cannot speak for shame, either because they are going to be preaching against it when graduate. I they have nothing against sexual activity among consenting adults but the self deception has become so engrained, they don’t know where to turn. The two priests welcoming Pope Paul to ireland are both fathers in the biological sense, while the Pope himself is conducting a long term private correspondence with a married woman. But it is nit really surprising as one has only to follow Pat’s blog for a few months to realise that the quality of exchange between the correspondents is so abusive and uncharitable that one is left feeling that there is nothing that such people would not stoop to.
\
But those I’m talking about were infants who were not abused, but made into un-people by tge clerics. They were deprived of their mothers – and some times they were sold abroad, used to test drugs on for a fee or sold to the medical schools for anatomy lessons. But the main deprivation was that they were deprived of an identity and never knew who they were; and this particular metaphysical transformation was effected on them in the wider society by the teaching of conventional priests. They who were telling the faithful that they had the power to forgive sin by virtue of the sacrament of Holy Orders, but the only miracle they managed to perform was that the could convince congregations that such infants were ‘the products of sin’. The forgiveness of sin, it appears, was not absolute as the priest’s prayers were required so the dead might be freed from their sins in the next life.

But what about these innocent children who had to live their lives without mothers, and therefore no roots in the community. The Irish state today has set aside €800m to compensate such children with their Mothers and Babies scheme, but what’s a few thousand euros in exchange for ones mother and an identity in a society obsessed with identity, much of it theological. . The government talks about ‘restorative recognition’. I never heard any cleric speak about what they might do for these people, never heard of any change that they might effect for these lost citizen most of whom emigrated’ or at least emigrated out of the isles of churches.

I don’t expect to hear their grievances addressed from any pulpit until the churches are empty.

This is a very disturbing story. The death of a seminarian because of abuse and torment. Pat, was it Robert who brought this to your attention and did his video re: student spur you to devote your blog to the matter? Are both of you working together to seek the full truth or are you working independently of each other? I think that discussing this without family permission may be an intrusion too far for this family. The fact that the family hasn’t returned a call to you may suggest their deep upset and uneasiness to pursue this matter. Why has this only come to the attention now of you and Robert? Can you confirm if you are both together on this matter?

But guys we need answers, we really do. We also need support to close the wounds of abuse. Are we not morally obliged to end this once and for all? Any abuse or anonymous harassment that either Pat or I get about asking questions will be immediately reported to Gardai/Police. We are asking legitimate questions about real abuse that caused a young man to go into depression and take his life. I will upload the letter on this to the channel today.

By coming out and owning my sexuality I have been better able to protect myself from this kind of bullying. When I was in the closet, I was the target of homosexual bullying by an older, self-loathing homosexual man. The bullying I experienced is worse than any kind of homophobia I have ever received from a heterosexual person. At times, the gay community can be its own worst enemy.

I think your use of the word ‘clowns’ says it all, and accurately describes the idiotic, self-serving behaviour of these three, who from a young age have used the excuse of sharing their ‘gift’ as a means of putting themselves in the limelight and making sure that it is all about them. How many religious people have I come across who use this ‘God has given me a gift that I must share’ as a way of putting themselves front and centre ? I’m sure their respective parishes would like to see a bit more of them, rather than having them conspicuous by their absence as by their presence. Or maybe not ?! Imagine being assailed by those pompous voices at every opportunity, as they break in to song ! Perhaps the current Bishop of Kilmore, Bishop Martin Hayes, could shed light on this. He was, after all, a member of staff in Thurles at that time. Then again, he is presently missing in action from Kilmore diocese for unknown reasons. Fr John Littleton was also on the staff teaching Scripture. He fell out with Archbishop Clifford of Cashel & Emly though as did many Cashel & Emly priests during his reign. That diocese lost quite a few priests because of him. I want Pat Buckley to independently continue to investigate abuse and coverup, nobody will shut him down. If they take Pat out, we (laymen) will take over. But we have to be careful to ensure how when we comment on people is kept to the point and focused on the abuse. Otherwise comments like yours deflects from the abuse that is actually happening. So feel free to comment Pat isn’t filtering what is coming against me. However be aware what I’m coming with. God comes with mercy first, before he comes in Judgment you won’t have time to flee. When I was a student in Rome, a quarter of my class were active homosexually, including me, though we considered ourselves relatively chaste because of the four I know (including me), we were each just sexually intimate with one person, ie we were two sets of couples. There was no cruising, gay bars, it was before the days of Grindr.

All four of us left during formation and two of us (including me) are married with children now.

It was hard to judge, really. I was there in the 1990s. Sexuality was taboo and wasn’t much talked about then, either formally or informally among the students. There was none of the talk about women you get when straight men are together, but I think that was because of the prevailing atmosphere about such talk not seeming appropriate, somehow.

I only know there were four because my friend and I made two, and two were asked to leave when discovered. There had been rumours about them, but not about me, as far as I know. We left on good terms with the authorities.

As for the rest of the sems, I don’t know. I assumed they weren’t that interested in anything sexual, or certainly didn’t express it. I’ve discovered afterwards that someone being stereotypically straight was not a definite indicator that they are.

I think I ended up in my situation because of a mix of the intensity of the friendship and being far from home. We were both virgins and didn’t do that much sexually; it was like a holiday romance. We loved one another and both knew it was wrong and we felt guilty.

The whole thing lasted a term and a bit. When we came back to Rome after the Christmas break we both seoarately but simultaneously had decided it had to end.

I think fondly of it now, and we are Facebook friends after losing touch for many years, but we don’t really talk about what happened, though we both I think feel happy with the memory of it and a little bit uncomfortable given our present situation as married men whose wives don’t know our secret.

It was a lovely thing in a lovely city, in an environment (seminary) where affection was indeed present, but often expressed in a very stilted and removed way, and where people were already mastering the art of being self-contained and where, if the authorities turned against you, could be very cruel indeed.

But Fleming did his duty for the organisation ( he could do little else at a funeral). The carnage is everywhere…. Tim C of Cashel and Emily in the 1980s and others…..Willie Doherty of Armagh…. Treated appallingly….. died in a vehicle on train tracks in Italy…. The car stalled perhaps… The carnage is everywhere and so much of it… many other tragedies I am aware of…. That is correct. He was treated in an appalling fashion. There was an exemplary priest who never shunned him and was so good to the Doherty family…Always. He did Willie Dohertys funeral. The family went out of their way to make sure no Armagh priest was at the funeral ( to my knowledge none of them were). Sean Brady and Michael Toner were vicious to him . It was not Tomas O Fiachs greatest hour, but he did go the family home to say Willie was not being ordained. It was a phone call to Italy on the bill at some unearthly hour in the morning in St. Patrick’s Dundalk that caused Mc Cartan ( a repressed whatever along with others) to lead his crusade. Imagine kicking Willie out when… Ledwith…. Dermot Martin….. and a plethora of others were up to all sorts. The exemplary priest is of Meath; Father Declan Kelly. Bishop Smith of Meath on that priests 25th said as much as I am saying; exemplary in his care. Exemplary.

Willie Doherty cooked the best pasta I have ever tasted ( Gorgonzola cheese before I developed a sophisticated palate!!) He spoke Italian better than a native. The staff of the Irish College Rome were very jealous of that… Willie was very very talented academically and was a genuinely nice guy….. but he wore his personality in all its aspects in full view. It was a different world then and he was not respected… not at all. In my opinion with all its progress, the world is still not so benevolent to individuals with the honesty of character that Willie Doherty had. I hope his transfer to the other side has brought him sybaritic paradise.

Yes I remember Sean too – I recall he couldn’t drive and struggled with his driving lessons. I remember other clergy complaining about his ability to do paper work especially regarding weddings and baptisms – it never occurred to them to help him or that he needed some retraining or extra support. He wasn’t especially academically gifted which would not have endeared him to McKinney or Evans – fatherly support or kindness is not what they could offer – Evans is especially emotionaly constipated and the English Bishops go to on philosophy etc just also happens to be shite with human beings and being normal and well adjusted – perfect bishop material then.
Poor Sean Oscott chewed him up and spat him out.
Thanks for pointing out others who committed suicide – my God that is the death that dare not speak its name. Sean was given a requiem Mass and a decent burial but even in death you could tell the clergy who were pissed off with him – maybe they were pissed off with him when he was alive too and it contributed to his untimely death.

Former Pope Benedict XVI has acknowledged that errors were made in the handling of sexual abuse cases when he was archbishop of Munich.

In a letter released by the Vatican, the former pontiff asked forgiveness for any “grievous fault” but denied personal wrongdoing.

A German report into the Catholic Church alleged that he failed to act over four child sex abuse cases.

Then known as Josef Ratzinger, he was archbishop of Munich from 1977 to 1982.

The report by a German law firm alleges that abuse continued under his tenure, and that the priests accused of carrying out the abuse remained active in church roles.

In his first personal response to the report, the former Pope, now 94, wrote: “I have had great responsibilities in the Catholic Church. All the greater is my pain for the abuses and the errors that occurred in those different places during the time of my mandate.”

He described the actions against victims of sexual abuse as a “most grievous fault.

“As in those meetings, once again I can only express to all the victims of sexual abuse my profound shame, my deep sorrow and my heartfelt request for forgiveness.

“Quite soon, I shall find myself before the final judge of my life”, he added.

Before the report was released in January, Pope Benedict had denied he had attended a meeting in 1980 about sexual abuse cases when he was archbishop of Munich.

But after the report’s release, Pope Benedict said he had indeed attended the meeting. His personal secretary at the time, Archbishop Georg Ganswein, said the omission was an oversight in the editing of the statement released at the time and was not done out of bad faith.

Pope Benedict referred to this in the letter, stating that he felt deeply hurt by how this oversight had been used “to cast doubt on my truthfulness, and even to label me a liar.”

The California nun is heading to prison after a decade of theft
She wore a habit while hiding a bad habit.
Mary Margaret Kreuper, a retired nun, admitted that she had broken her vow of poverty by stealing $835,000 (£616,000) from a California school where she worked to fund her gambling.
Kreuper, 80, will spend a year and a day in prison for wire fraud and money laundering.
“I have sinned, I have broken the law and I have no excuses,” she said at her sentencing in Los Angeles.
For over a decade, Kreuper embezzled funds from tuition and donations to the St James Catholic School where she was principal.
She then instructed other school employees to “alter and destroy financial records” to cover up her crime.
The money, which according to prosecutors could have covered school fees for over a dozen students, was spent on trips to casinos and holidays for Kreuper and her friends.
The scheme was revealed during an audit after Kreuper retired in 2018.
In announcing her sentencing, US District Court Judge Otis D Wright II said he struggled with weighing legal punishment against pleas for forgiveness from Catholic families whose children were taught at St James. He ordered Kreuper to spend 12 months and a day behind bars, and to pay back the school the $835,339 in restitution.
Kreuper told the judge she was “profoundly sorry” and would spend the rest of her life trying to follow “more closely in Christ’s footsteps”.
Her lawyers said she had been suffering from mental illness which “clouded her judgment”.

Like

Have you seen the picture of her? She’s blonde. Apparently.

There’s literally all kinds of wrong going on in addition to the crime.
1. Stupid parents asking for mercy because she’s a sister
2. Employees covering up her crime because she’s a sister
3. Her retiring at around 75 because she’s a sister.
4. I do not believe she will ever be in a position to pay back the money so that’s just ridiculous.
5. Her crime was only picked up in an audit after her retirement. That’s some creative accounting right there.
6. Other sisters went on the gambling trips she financed. I wonder whether that could be a crime.

Which bit of ‘the church is a scam and criminal organization’ not make sense to people?

I wonder did a lot of the toxic and dysfunctional boarding school culture transfer into seminaries? Is that why they are so messed up?

Like

Interesting comment @9.27pm. I know during my time that there was definitely fagging in the VEC in Rome during the 90’s. There was a guy who was ex public school who had a younger Seminarian do all his chores. Some thought this fag master was particularly cruel to his fag running errands for him all over Rome. Shining his shoes, making him breakfast, making his bed up and washing his underpants plus lots more. It’s no secret that politicians like Nick Clegg, Boris and others all had fags. They say it’s been abolished but it’s alive and kicking. Not in the least surprised it still happens in Seminaries which are in the end all glorified male boarding schools. The modern day slang for them I suppose is regarding them as someones bitch.

However, there is much confusion about this synodal pathway. Expectations are too high. The language so far is all 7dealistic and esoteric. The Synodal visiin was presented at a time when regrouping in parishes after the 2 years and more of a pandemic. The reality of changes which the pandemic brought to parish communities has not been absorbed. The shortage of volunteers and clerical personnel is rarely acknowledged. Huge mountains of information is being delivered with little chance of reading the high notioned visions let alone implement any of it. The truth is we are just turning the wheel of the ship as before but with the furniture almost underwater and the music is quickly dying. In the meantime our parish is doing what it does best – try to remain true to the gospel command to love God and one another in as inclusive and caring a way as possible. And we are pretty good at this without a Synodal boat!!

I admire the way he is trying to help other men to live their faith, to pray, to talk together. All very noble and we need more people like him to develop opportunities for men to talk about “their” issues. There is though a part of me which tells me that Robert may have been better to stand alone in his quest for truth and justice re: students and others who have experienced horrible bullying in seminaries. Pat has a very different approach to Robert and I feel that they should – if it’s possible – collate all informatio received, keep it private and when appropriate present it to An Gardai. Dropping hints about where they’re at and what they’re doing is allowing too many interpretations and judgments to be made which could hinder a future investigation. I am worried too that family members of students or priests being referred to may be very hurt if they’ve not been asked or informed about the present developments. I also ask Pat not to print further denigratory and vulgar comnents against Robert. They are morally disgusting. We have proof enough that there are, sadly, troll abusers in their hundreds out there playing their filthy, bullying games with scant regard for any reputational damage done to targeted victims.
