ARCHBISHOP ELECT TRAVELS TO PAEDOPHILE PRIEST’S FUNERAL

The priest was Fr Colman McGrath.

Fr Coleman McGrath

He taught at Blair’s Junior Seminary

Colman was convicted of abusing boys including 1 who is now a priest of Glasgow.

Colman was allowed to minister in Glasgow after allegations arose.

After being convicted he was given a priests funeral at which Archbishop Tartaglia presided.

Bishop Nolan travelled from his home in Ayr for Colmans funeral even though he’d admitted and been convicted.

Absolutely shocking, told you this was another company man.

You’ll find reference to Bill Nolan’s attendance on The St Mungos Singer Website

PAT SAYS

The Catholic position is that Funeral Masses are not a celebration of the life of the deceased – but rather a Mass to pray for the soul of the deceased for the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation of his soul

So, the worst of sinners and criminals deserve and need a Funeral Mass.

But the funeral of a paedophile should be a discreet and low key affair- certainly not a Mass celebrated by an archbishop with another bishop present.

The fact that Bishop Nolan travelled to another diocese to take part in a paedophile priest’s  funeral was way over the top and smacks of Nolan not having an understanding of the pain of his victims.

But that’s the RC bishops for you.

They continue took after paedophile priest and f*** the victims.

This does not bode well for Nolan’s tenure in Glasgow.

THE NUNCIOS TO THE COURT OF ST JAMES

By Monsignor V

The long overdue appointment of the Archbishop of Glasgow has concentrated my mind on the role of the Nuncio, and in particular the representative of The Holy See to the Court of St James, as the Apostolic Nuncio covering England and Wales and Scotland (but NOT the North of Ireland) is properly known. I have come across each of them to varying degrees from the 1980’s and what a mixed bunch they have been. One thing is for sure, the quality has diminished as the decades have past, and in my opinion have reached an absolute nadir with the present indolent incumbent of Parkside, SW19. A wise priest once opined “no lions in the Hierarchy”, that could be equally said of the papal diplomatic service, where they all seem to be pussycats!

HEIM

The first I met was the magnificent Archbishop Bruno Bernard Heim (1973-85), a giant and not a pygmy. He was delightful and the epitome of what an ambassador should be; urbane, sophisticated, handsome, impeccably dressed, exquisite manners and fluent in several languages. He was also a fine cook and artist (specialising in ecclesiastical heraldry – he designed the coats of arms of Popes Saints John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I (soon to be beatified), John Paul II – and a true, if somewhat indiscreet, friend to the people who mattered in the British Establishment, who sought him out. A particular friendship was with the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who regularly made the trip south of the river (unheard of for a senior royal) to dine at his fine table.

More than anything thing else Heim realised that the Church in England to be taken seriously on the national stage had to be governed by Englishmen, of a certain background, education and class, and not the Irish diaspora who had dominated the hierarchy since its restoration. This was not because of anti-Irish sentiment, though he wasn’t terribly complimentary about the appointment of Tom O’Fee to Armagh, “Ireland deserves better”, was his only comment about that, and he used to relate how O’Fee was transfixed with the Throne Room of the Archbishop of Westminster at Archbishop’s House, “Gosh Armagh has nothing like this”, he said,  and like an excited schoolboy became fixated on having his portrait taken sitting in the most elaborate and rather vulgar throne.

Heim saw to it that John Carmel “Jackie” Cardinal Heenan was succeeded George Basil Hume, as English as they come (even though the old fraud had a French mother and so was in fact French!) and most important of all had English names and spoke with a cut-glass upper-class accent. Hume’s brother was also a senior civil servant at the heart of government, this opened many previously closed doors for the Catholic Church. It is widely accepted that it was the Duke of Norfolk (the Premier Duke of the Relam) who lobbied Heim to insist the Vatican appoint Hume, over the superbly able but emotionally capricious Derek Worlock, who thought Westminster was his for the taking. The appointment of Hume was followed by that of the impossibly grand Maurice Couve de Murville, “Couve the Smooth” his priests called him, to Birmingham, again a scion of the upper middle classes, with impeccable British credentials from his time as a public schoolboy at Downside. That gave him the best of starts in life.

In many ways Heim was a snob, and perhaps his own lowly birth – his father was a stationmaster, his mother cook – blinded him to the many flaws in the characters of those he had promoted to the highest levels of the Church. Both Hume and de Murville were disastrous as diocesan bishops, who were disliked by their priests, both suffered from depression and most seriously of all, both had long histories of covering up for clerical sex abusers, Hume most egregiously while Abbot of Ampleforth. It’s worth noting that the cause for the beatification for Basil Hume has been quietly shelved. There are too many skeletons in that particular closet, and senior man who knew him well said that it was a good thing that Hume left the stage when he did, as had he been Archbishop now, he would have been torn to pieces by the media.

Heim was almost certainly gay (though I never heard even a whisper that he went for late night walks on Wimbledon Common, where one is likely to encounter, well certainly not Wombles!) and sought out and enjoyed the company of witty, intelligent, good looking and invariably straight priests. He was particularly obsessed with his private secretary Monsignor Kieran Conry, a priest from the Birmingham diocese. I’m told that Heim became obsessed with the handsome priest and determined to have a mitre put on his head. To his credit Conry refused, time and again, even confessing to his problems with women. Heim persisted and in time (though Heim was long gone by then) Conry got the mitre that he did not seek. and was appointed fourth Bishop of Arundel and Brighton. In 2014 Conry announced his resignation as bishop with immediate effect for having “been unfaithful to [his] promises as a Catholic priest”. He had been photographed by the Media doing the weekly shop with one of the two women he was involved with at that time. Both were married and their husbands were not terribly happy!

May I refer anyone who remembers to a newspaper article in my regard in 2018. The transfer of O Donnell from the Mercy Hospital in Melbourne through underground tunnels for the purpose of his funeral rites told me a lot about the subject matter of your Blog within the Roman Church and its ways. I would not post this at this hour except to intimate the seriousness of the mindset of these bishops in my view. Was there ever a RC bishop/s present at at the funeral of a person who suicided as a result of the dynamics, abuse and bullying of The Roman Catholic Church ?

Heim had no jurisdiction over Irish appointments as the Irish Church had and still has its own Nuncio and still doesn’t recognise any border engineered by the British. So it was a bit rich of him looking down his snout at the Armagh appointnent after he helped appoint the cover up merchants of Coco de bournville Couve to Birmingham and Hume to Westminster. Tomas Fee would be having the last laugh on that one as he always did.

fiach/fee was from a higher socio economic background than the Nuncio referred to and was arguably more intelligent.

Quite agree. The blog has been a bit depressing since the summer of love, so some tittle-tattle would be welcome. Basil and Couve were not the only Catholic public schoolboys advanced by Heim. There was also Michael Bowen ( Downside) to Southwark and Crispian Hollis ( Stonyhurst ) to Portsmouth.

Hollis and Conry were victims of Coco de Bournville and his snobbery. McCartie also pushed out to Northants. Nobody could abide him.

There was a ‘silent’ civil war in Maynooth. Father Tom Clancy ( Cork and Ross) and Father Oliver Brennan ( Armagh) were in the middle of it….leading either side. Phelim Mc Keown ( Armagh) and Jim Fitzpatrick ( Ferns) ( the only student in the history of Maynooth to be on friendship terms with all the Deans and none of them knew it…it is my undesatning that he was very good-looking…and of the stock that clergy adore) were also in the middle of it. They are both deceased.
I have blogged before here that this Blog unwittingly is joining the dots. As when a bishop becomes aware of a problem…..its the tip of the iceberg. Trouble is the iceberg is made of the fabric that sustains The College of Bishops. Join my obtuse dots…..The two priests named have nothing to do with the subject matter of todays Blog…..but yesterdays and so many more…….reflect carefully before your full scale attack on my person

I mean this in the most respectful way – grow up! I am tired of your ‘covert riddles’ that you leave on this blog. ‘Join the dots’ – how about you have an ounce of respect for yourself and air your grievances and join them for us? Pat doesn’t want to play your games. At least Robert Nugent stands behind his words. You on the other hand have continuously left unreadable dribble that never leads to anything. It is quite pathetic and your defence of certain people we know to be corrupt is reprehensible- ‘he is a good priest.’ Do you think anyone cares what your opinion is? The facts speak for themselves. You were a priest of a bygone era, who is revelling in his past, move on with your life or back up what you say. Your immature comments are akin to ‘I know something that you don’t know’ but you have no intention of standing behind it or sharing it. Sad. Pathetic. Inane. Boring. Tiring.

Conry might have seen his weaknesses clearly, perhaps a sort of sexual addiction which would have wrecked a marriage (he did wreck two others) if he had been a layman, but he was carefully protected by his colleagues. I suppose that’s an unsurprising thing. The paedo priest funeral also isn’t surprising, and unfortunately funerals are all too often a trite celebration, when the deceased was not a good man and needs every prayer and ‘good vibe’ going. The usual.

In the late 2000s, Damian Thompson had a blog on the Telegraph website and he really had it in for Bishop Kieran Conroy. From what I have read, Conroy sounds like he was a decent bloke and good bishop.
The Queen Mother was a notorious fag-hag.
I am disappointed to learn this information about Cardinal Hume whom I had naively thought to be one of the good guys.
The obituary of McGrath on the M’ingers website is just really weird.

A marriage wrecker protected by the ecclesial establishment doesn’t sound like a ‘decent bloke’ but someone who should have booked himself into a clinic, if he had to become a bishop.

Like

Conry was nice bloke and a good bishop, yes. But, he was also an arrogant sod who thought that he could just ignore the conventions and rules around his public promise of celibacy. The decent thing would have been for him to leave the priesthood, then he could have shagged away to his heart’s content. Those I knew who worked with him in various places talk about how he had the ability to just not be there, to disappear, just not be around. The story in the early days was that he needed to spend time with his family and his brother, who was dying of Aids in the late 80s / early 90s, and perhaps he did do that. But, I think it was a cover for him establishing a modus operandi of absence that people just got used to. Very handy when you needed time to juggle two or three girlfriends at the same time. So, like so many of these clergy and bishops who are good guys, capable, able, with some good ideas, Kieran had the fatal flaw of conceit and arrogance that he thought he could live a parallel life and ignore what he publicly stood for. Until it caught him out. His pathetic excuse was that he never talked about sexual morality when he preached, so how could he be accused of being a hypocrite ! Well, sadly, he was a hypocrite and let down a lot of people. When it all came out he was knifed pretty comprehensively by all the other bishops, chiefly Nichols, who all ran for cover. Even though a number of them had know what he was up to for quite some time. I haven’t heard when Conry is or what he is doing, but I suspect he is in pretty constrained circumstances, on a limited budget, and not very much ability to build a new life and career for himself. Sad, but he did bring it on himself.

Like

Conry was a desk priest who, for some reason, was talked about all his priestly life as being destined to be a bishop, despite his slender pastoral experience.

Like

‘But, he was also an arrogant sod who thought that he could just ignore the conventions and rules around his public promise of celibacy.’
That’s how so many clerics come across and not just about conventions concerning celibacy.

Conry was a moderately good looking young man when he was seminarian / young priest, reasonably bright, and good with the charm. He wore tight trousers that showed off him bum and other attributes, and the likes of CMOC, Couve, Heim and others took a shine to him and promoted his cause. He just went along with the ride and took advantage of what he was offered. I think the only real bit of pastoral / parish work he did was a couple of years up in Staffordshire before he was made a bishop, not doubt so that it could be put on his CV when he was going to be, inevitably, considered. Nice chap, pretty competent, and user friendly for the media, but I don’t think anybody ever really knew him. There was another life and reality going on with him. I think the women were only one aspect of that. I guess it’s fortunate that he was rumbled when he was because he probably would be in the running to succeed Nichols. That would have been interesting !

I don’t know about Conry being in line for Westminster as he would still be waiting for Nichols to go. Hume liked to flirt with pretty public school types but was drawn to good looking young men even if their social class was beneath him (bit of rough). I don’t know if he acted on his homosexual disposition but that he was a gay man was self-evident and a snob to boot (true of most of not all Benedictines.
What he was for sure was a major cover up merchant and his loyalty and devotion to Jimmy Saville almost got him kicked out of the Anatheuem Club (why a monk who took a vow of poverty was even a member is beyond me).
Hume lovers will be sensitive to all of the above – you know, living saint, the Passage (how apt) and tea with the Queen (like Heim, another Queen) he enjoyed the trappings of office.
He’d say things like, ‘Meeting Major next week what a bore’ that kind of thing.
The cult of Hume is dead thank God the idea of his beatification risible as would it be if Ratzinger is considered venerable or blessed. They are cover up merchants and privately despise victims of child abuse who they believe should keep stum and be grateful that Father gave them so much attention.
Heenan was the same – Lord Delvin was abusing his daughter, she went to Heenan, he counselled silence.
The Westminster Bubble is a den of vipers – the venom is toxic – they will ultimately kill themselves with their own poison.
Elsie is treading water – exposed as Cover Upper in Chief – the apologies are sickening and shallow.

With you 100% but I think Nazinger will be put on the road to canonisation in short order, to elicit donations from his followers and as a slap in the face for victims.
I bet he wishes he was dead now because I am certain there is more to come out about him and the canonisation will go ahead regardless of what comes out.
Long story short, criminals and sexual perverts flock together however even prisoners have enough moral sense to see paedophiles shouldn’t be facilitated.

Like

It seems to be the rule now all Popes post V2 get canonised. JP2 got canonised, and the only defence seems to be that Vatican bureaucrats kept the truth from him, the sort of thing which would only be true if he had become a cabbage in office. Benedict shows he had learned and grown by formulating rules now followed for dismissing perv priests.

By contrast, the cause of Ven Pius XII has ground to a halt despite the fact the only things against him are the result of a deliberate postwar KGB Communist black propaganda effort (the Rolf Hochhuth, the Deputy was part of that) and those determined to be its dupes (like the mendacious John Cornwell). Now Pius XII was not perfect, the ’55 Holy Week, which we still have, is pseudo historical junk.

That said, canonisation is a matter of politics and resources, hence all these Italian and French religious founders, including many, many Passionists.

Like

JPII at least warranted it given what he did and endured for Poland and Eastern Europe under the Nazi’s and then the Marxists, but once the supporters of JPII got him canonised, the rest who hated him had to get theirs’s pronounced Saints as well. It’s politics.

What an ill-informed (and nazty) comment, no doubt born of only reading articles/books by ignorant writers with prejudices and agendas. The young Ratzinger’s fine response to the Nazi police state is public knowledge yet was twisted, particularly by the English (Masonic?) tabloid press, into a caricature which is just about the opposite of the truth.

As to Ratzinger and stories still to “come out” regarding abuse and cover up, here is one, an as yet little known indication of where Cardinal R was coming from. But sorry to disappoint you, it’s not the sort of slime you are assuming and perhaps hoping for.

A friend of JR’s from their academic days together visited him in Rome in the 1980s during his early days at the CDF. His usually sparse office was crammed with files, so much so that it was hard to find a place to sit. Naturally he asked what this paperwork was. It turned out that JPII, shocked by the state of the Church, had sent the Vatican’s abuse files to JR (despite the CDF having no formal responsibility for this at that point) as he didn’t trust anyone else to read it and respond. This was a brilliant move. The clean up had (at last) begun and, contrary to your assumptions, it started with JR, already unpopular (for being so bright) but now also feared by pervert prelates around the globe.

Seen from the perspective of 2022 one could say that the original clean up attempts back then were inefficient, inadequate, incomplete. But given the enormous scale of the problem, the general lack of understanding of the issues, and the nature of the supposed “expert” advice of the day (supposed Catholic “psychologists” who preached that paedophile priests can be “cured”, “Catholic” insurance companies that enforced secret payments with NDAs) this is not surprising. JR was not some part of the cover up, he was the beginning of starting to sort out decades of tragic failure.

Your spiteful and ignorant typing is wicked and deserves a rebuke.

The Colman McGrath funeral in Glasgow wasn’t the only clergy obsequies to cause jaws to drop.
Fr Gerry Nugent ( no relation of Robert) was PP of St Patrick’s Church in Glasgow. That was the church where the young polish girl Angelina Kluk was murdered and buried below the church floor by the notorious Peter Tobin.
It was revealed at the time and subsequent trial that the priest, Gerry Nugent was a persistent shagger and it was even alleged that he had a sexual relationship with the murdered girl.
Priests and people who knew him from his time in Possil and Bilsland Drive said he was a well known ‘leg over’merchant.
He stood down amid great scandal. When he died he was given a funeral fit for a bishop.
One would have been forgiven for thinking that an Ad Clerum had gone out with a three line whip for priests to attend the funeral such was the turn out of clergy.
However with time the good people of Glasgow are letting this lot know what they think of such arrogance. Emptying pews!

Parents were delighted to have their young sons spotted by the clergy as promising priest material and sent off to Cotton for a free education subsidised by the fees paid by the non junior seminary pupils. It would usually be a young Irish family working class lad, a little bright, invariably pleasing to the eye, that would catch the attention of the parish priest, who would broach the subject and it would be taken as a great honour by the family. Little did they know that they were putting their sons in to the hands of Alexander Bede Walsh and others. What damage will have been done. Not that they talk about it much. + Pargeter probably still thinks that Cotton was a good thing. Everybody colluded, everybody turned a blind eye. Until they couldn’t anymore. Dig a little and you will find the same thing was going on at all those church run / diocesan schools.

I wonder if I went to confession how many our fathers and hail Mary’s would I get to absolve me of my sins or would I be given an exorcism?

Like

@ 3.55pm Butcher Girl don’t worry your head about confession blade. Just stick to the meat counter instead and give me a 1lb mince, a few beef sausahes, veggie roll (that contains no veg) and a few trotters please. Make sure the trotters have a bit of grit between the toes for added crunch, texture and flavour.

@ 6.43pm John Cornwell, was he a priest at one stage? I could be wrong so I stand corrected if wrong. I remember from reading Cornwell’s book ages ago that there was a clergy member of staff at Cotton who thrashed him and other boys and knocked their pan in basically. That clergy member became a Bishop I am led to believe? I am not sure.

You all know a report is dropping tomorrow. It probably relates to the abuse of young sems. This Buckley-Nugent collaboration might yield some results, and certainly has elicited a reaction. I hope Fr Andersen is not forgotten.

Yes let’s not forget Fr Benedict on our quest to rectify the the bullying and harassment of Micheal D. Oh, the irony!!!

Ohhhh Old Hall Green now that’s a story and blast from the past. Did it produce Hume’s auxiliary James O’Brien? He was a gentleman though unlike the rest.

Like

I believe Bishop O’Brien was Rector of Old Hall Green and transferred it to Allen Hall. A big task. You are quite correct, he was a very pleasant gentleman. Met him many times. No airs and graces. Auxiliary Bishop and Bishop in Hertfordshire. Very similar to Cardinal Hume.

12:44pm Don’t kid yourself – what going to stop it when instead of doing what they lie & pretend to do, they spend all their days on this blog trying to deny, deflect & discredit & harass anyone that dares to stick up for themselves – discrimination & harassment rife everywhere in this toxic RCC cesspit of corruption starting with the seminaries. What kind of a mindset would have so little self respect as to stay in that cesspit, seriously dysfunctional & a danger to society as we see proven repeatedly worldwide.

5.33: Though I had certain concerns re: Pat and Robert co-operation together in seeking truth and justice for seminarians and priests who have been bullied and abused in different ways, I am delighted to realise that they are ready to produce a “report” by way of helping a necessary dialogue to occur for all who have kept silent about their experiences or those who came up against opposition, denial and obfuscation from church leaders. If American priests and seminarians can go public about their abuse by bishops and others, we too should seek similar justice. I never experienced any abuse, bullying or unwanted advances while in seminary or since ordination, except having worked with one or two bullying older priests. There are, sadly, many who had horrible experiences. I’ve been of the belief for many years – almost since ordination over 40 years ago – that the priesthood and the institutional church requires the radical intervention of people like Robert – the lay faithful – to renew a very broken church, to help steer a way forward which prevents abuse of power, authority and ministry. I think the challenge is mountainous but not insurmountable. I support the people of God like Robert. All church denominations need people of his calibre, particularly the catholic church. I await the “report” at midnight.

7.58: Sir Anonymous. About me, you’ve got it 100% wrong. I have commented many times before. I changed my name. About Robert, I have expressed doubt, concerns and admiration. About Pat and Robert, I was initially cautious and sceptical of their ability to work together since they are both very different people with different styles, convictions and approaches. For now, as of today, I am glad to say I believe they can co-operate together on the issues at the centre of their “report”. I only came across Robert recently and as a priest, I stand in full respect of his ministry and mission. Indeed, he is one of the people of God, along with many others who are needed to help rebuild and renew the Church and priesthood out of its present ruins. I have always respected, recognised and affirmed the “dignity” and “Christ-likeness” of all people of God. I may not be as enthralled when their report appears tomorrow and I will say so. I will also, if necessary express counter opinions. Robert is a good person. I hope and pray that along with Pat, a new time may emerge!

@5.15pm That has summed up a lot of issues regarding present day seminary training. I was oft of the opinion that the boarding school mentality/behaviour/culture explains a lot of what has happened in seminaries in the uk/ireland. There is a debate to be had. Bullying, homosexuality, self entitlement, arrogance, lying and much more. Look at Westminister politics at the moment and you see public school boy behaviour and entitlement/arrogance being played out before us in the daily news. Junior sems/boarding schools bred the current problems that progressed into seminary life as we knew/know it.

10:06, gaslighting is being slowly driven crazy by a more powerful party, and being made to feel as if one’s going crazy. It was coined after the 1944 movie “Gaslight”, which is summarised below:
After the death of her famous opera-singing aunt, Paula (Ingrid Bergman) is sent to study in Italy to become a great opera singer as well. While there, she falls in love with the charming Gregory Anton (Charles Boyer). The two return to London, and Paula begins to notice strange goings-on: missing pictures, strange footsteps in the night and gaslights that dim without being touched. As she fights to retain her sanity, her new husband’s intentions come into question.
