THERE ARE AT LEAST 4 MORE VICTIMS OF SEXUAL HARRASSMENT BY KIRBY AT SILVERSTREAM 😞

“HIS PENIS WOULD BE HANGING OUT”.

I have been given the names and details of four more men who say that Kirby sexually harassed them during their stay at Silvetstream.

I have been refused permission to name them on the Blog for now.

All 4, for different reasons, are afraid of reprisals of various kinds.

Below I publish some the things men said about what happened:

(1) JIM was an early visitor to SP, an aspirant to receive the habit. JIM kept an absolutely meticulous journal of his time at SP. JIM stayed for several months and helped with setting up the house, etc. JIM speaks of Dom Kirby’s bizarre physical and emotional inappropriateness towards Dom Andersen (who was a novice then); this is all related in his journal with some detail. JIM was also personally severely “gaslighted” (in the true sense of the term) and manipulated severely by Kirby. Kirby encouraged JIM, used him, and then found an excuse to turn him out when his presence became undesirable (some of this had to do with the JIM’s curiousity about the “messages” that Kirby would write into his notebook during adoration of the Blessed Sacrament). Since leaving, JIM (a meticulous researcher with many connections) has learned extensively about Kirby’s “gay sexcapades” (his term), while a priest and solemnly professed Cistercian monk, from Washington DC all the way up to Rhode Island. JIM feels so strongly about what he experienced that he would come forward, but only under the right circumstances. JIM has to be careful, as he has now a semi-public persona.

(2) BILL was an early postulant to SP. Unlike the first, sent a formal testimony to the visitation. This individual testified to the following: (a) being scandalised over Kirby’s gross mismanagement of funds and the engagement of unqualified workers who produced shoddy work; (b) Kirby as a master manipulator who sought to use people, especially those with talents and money, to further his ego-driven project; (c) Kirby shared with others in the community and even with outside visitors (over a cup of tea) intimate details of BILL’s mental health situation, things that BILL had shared expecting complete pastoral confidentiality (this is of course also a medical data protection issue); (d) Kirby broke pastoral confidentiality by telling BILL all about Dom Andersen’s personal background (including difficult family matters), as well as information about Dom Andersen’s medical situation. Kirby would send Andersen away, except for the fact that Andersen’s talent in designing newsletters meant that he could not let him go for financial reasons. (e) Kirby once took BILL aside privately to tell him, in “horrible detail”, stories about Kirby’s years of sexual abuse by his uncle. These stories confused and disturbed BILL, and he is still haunted by them. One detail that’s never left BILL is that Kirby’s uncle was known all around New Haven, Connecticut, as “Blw-jb” Kirby (he was known around town as a go-to guy for fellatio). To this day, BILL does not understand why Kirby shared this with him. (f) BILL summarised his experiences thus: “Finally, with the benefit of years of hindsight, I can only regard Dom Mark Daniel Kirby as a disturbed individual and master manipulator who has been driven by ego and delusional thinking (see: In Sinu Jesu) into founding a quasi-messianic monastery which he thinks is going to save Ireland and the world.” Again, all of this was presented to the visitation.

(3) AIDAN was another individual who had been in formation at SP. AIDAN is a very reserved individual and I think that Kirby would have been very cautious about any kind of “touching”. However, AIDAN speaks of feeling extreme pressure and manipulation, both emotional and spiritual, about staying at SP. As is Kirby’s modus operandi, he would recruit others both inside and outside the monastery to pressure AIDAN into staying. AIDAN felt trapped. He liked SP in some ways but he did not feel that he had a monastic vocation. Despite telling this to Kirby, the pressure continued until AIDAN simply had to cut things off and leave. AIDAN, being a very reserved person, does not wish to come forward about this; he simply wants to move on from the experience.

(4) DAVE is individual who lived at SP for a year as a volunteer. DAVE has a harrowing story about his time at SP that is in some ways even worse than what Dom Andersen publicly testified to. DAVE came to SP in a very vulnerable state and a low time in his life. DAVE experienced the typical Kirby pattern of gushing over someone, setting them up, making them feel special and chosen … then, when you become inconvenient or displeasing, he will not only drop you like something worthless, he will seek to destroy your reputation. DAVE felt very pressured to become a monk, which he did not want to do; Kirby brought in other people to try to convince him to stay. One time Kirby told DAVE that “Saint Therese” told Kirby personally that DAVE needed to stay and take the habit. Among the specific physical things DAVE speaks of was Kirby’s habit of coming to his cell in late at night, waiting about a half hour after Compline so as not to be seen by other monks. This man would be in bed in his underwear, and Kirby would say, “It’s okay, don’t change”. Kirby would sit on DAVE’s bed, and even pat DAVE’s on his upper thigh. When DAVE skirmed or showed discomfort, Kirby would say that “it’s nothing gay”, it’s just “Mediterranean”, culturally different from uptight Anglo-Saxon culture, etc. On one occasion, Kirby, during one of these late night visits, asked DAVE if he masturbated, and joked that this individual’s ethnicity is known to be “well hung”. In addition to what he experienced, DAVE could see clearly the psychological, emotional, and spiritual abuse to which Dom Andersen was subjected by Kirby. DAVE does not wish to come forward because he has experienced many terrible things in the Church and his reputation has been destroyed as a result

Additional, minor, testimonials:

(5) A high ranking priest of the RCC in America submitted to the visitation a sworn testimony about his personal experiences with Kirby, including financial issues and Kirby’s penchant for using his abuse story as a “grooming” technique. He expressed also his concern for Dom Andersen and the way in which he has been treated as a result of his revelations about Kirby.

(6) A high ranking priest in the USA with an international profile has spoken of his deep concerns about a novice under Dom Kirby’s care in Tulsa. He has first-hand knowledge of that novice’s 72 hour disappearance from the Tulsa monastery, and regards Dom Kirby as extremely intelligent and a master of spiritual and emotional manipulation.

(7) A Benedictine superior has expressed concerns, privately, about Kirby’s treatment of this young novice who came into his community after being under Kirby’s spiritual care. He does not have proof but the young man’s fragile state could be easily taken to indicate some kind of emotional manipulation or sexual interference.

(8) An American religious and distinguished canon lawyer has said that Kirby’s “sexcapades” all over the eastern seaboard are the stuff of legends in religious communities especially in Washington DC.

(9) The family of a monk have expressed deep concerns about their son remaining at SP. The monk, a young man, would seem to be still at SP.

(10) A seminary instructor knows Dom Kirby from many years ago. More specifically, he has knowledge of Kirby’s sexual profligacy. He spoke to one of his superiors about whether or not he should share his knowledge with the Bishop of Meath in order to back up Dom Andersen. This official told him not to say anything, as it would be “bad for the Traditional Catholic movement”. This individual will not speak out because he is afraid of reprisals from individuals connected to Silverstream Priory.

These new reports and testimonials are very worrying.

No one is asking for Silverstream to be closed.

But Mark Kirby SHOULD NOT be living there.

Kirby needs help.

Young monks need to be protected from him.

Heartbreaking to see this. For Transparency Dom Mark must leave the monastery to allow Bishop Deenihan time to review all this. We also need to ensure that Dom Benedict has closure. Regards Robert Nugent

Agreed. Dom Mark must leave. Dom Benedict must be apologised to and a great wrong put right.

Dear Dom Benedict, I apologise for not believing you. Let’s allow time now for people to work on the testimonies.

9.53: Yes, Dom Kirby should be laicised and returned to his home country. He should not be in the monastery. His presence is destructive. The Bishop of Meath must immediately seek Dom Mark’s resignation and ensure the wellbeing in every respect of the monks who genuinely feel a calling to monasticism. This delusional cult like man, Kirby, must be ousted. Robert protected the reputation of this man while ignoring Dom Anderson. I find this reality abhorrent especially when I listen to Robert’s videos. This monastery now requires professional supervision.

10:17, it is the testimony of Dom Andersen that Kirby was personally charismatic and dynamic, inspiring trust and painting an attractive vision for monastic life. Some people only knew the altar angel side of Kirby, blinded by his charisma. Kirby pulled the wool over their eyes.

And now some people blame and attack the deceived for being taken in by him instead of Kirby. Pretty typical. Blame does lie with the Bishop who did not do his due diligence on this man, and with those in the US that did not pass their concerns about him onto Ireland. This crap needs to stop.

+Pat @ 10:30pm 11/02 The NT is full of Jesus talking to sinners and there appears a popular conception that healings could be wrought through other powers, not that i believe that anything good Kirby has done comes from evil and those comforted by his words and apparent actions should not doubt.
What is in increasing doubt is Kirby’s fitness to have pastoral care over anyone and I hope that he and those of his ilk will soon be removed from arenas whereby they can wreak grave harm.

Pat, a very hard read and very sad.
Will you also afford Pseudonyms to former seminarians who were not ordained in Thurles/Carlow/Maynooth/Waterford going forward? People who were ordained to diaconate and/or ordained priests in public are fair game. Some people are using your blog to hurt and bully ex-seminarians. If they describe them but use a ‘pseudonym’ people who know, will know. Bill Mulvihill does it well he describes them and those who know, know who he means and “join the dots”, but I think he usually only names priests. I think you’d certainly get further with ex seminarians divulging knowledge that way.

If these things are true Kirby is exactly the kind of man who has been totally endorsed by the system and his behaviour minimised as human faults.
Once again he is strikingly similar to Abbot Cuthbert Brogan, although while Brogan has always been certain he was the only man to be abbot he isn’t quite as delusional about God talking to him.

To me it totally makes sense that Kirby would ask him “how is your relationship with your father?”. Conversion therapists promote the theory that a poor father-son relationship causes a boy to grow up gay. Conversion therapy is extremely popular among conservative and traddy Catholics in America. Conversion therapists do not sincerely believe that conversion therapy is efficacious and they only practice conversion therapy as a way of accessing vulnerable young victims, i.e., conversion therapy is a grooming strategy.
Conversion/reparative therapists are always homosexual, and they are almost always nonces. Courage Apostolate’s support for the conversion therapist Joseph Nicolosi tells you everything you need to know about Courage Apostolate.
The phrase ‘same sex attraction’ is conversion therapy terminology and the term originates from the conversion therapy movement. Do no use this term. Please use the terms ‘gay man’, ‘lesbian’, homosexual man/woman/person.

So here is the low down on why Tommy won’t ask Kirby to leave.
*
Leave behind the theology of celibacy – leave behind the motivation of celibacy. We’ll be caught up on “sacrifice for God” -v- protecting the church’s property.
*
To live celibacy requires a psychological adjustment away from natural inclination. It take fantastic formation to do this correctly. Many of the older generation priests display(ed) this. We all have examples we love and loath.
*
When the formation is not achieved problems arise…. and it seems near impossible to achieve in recent times at seminaries.
*
The problem in the main can be summarised as followed.
1. Poorly trained priest interacts with non-priest that he is attracted to, often ministering disproportionately to him/her and blurring the boundaries.
2. The conversation includes, flirtatious compliments undertones which appear to build up the persons confidence, but also build up in an overly-personal way.
3. The previous happens because the blurring of the line resulted in the priest using gospel justifications for acting on his own personal feelings.
4. The priest himself is now in crisis. He has build up an inappropriate personal connection and enters vocational crisis.
5. He tinkers back and forth in his mind as to where he’s taking this…. inadvertently pushing the “friend” back into a new crisis. This may or may not involve sleeping with each other, but those who do not sleep with their “friend” will trick themselves into thinking it was a “close call” rather than a crisis.
6. The priest either leaves ministry, rejects the friend and renews ministry leaving a sense of rejection, or continues the disfunction completely oblivious to his vocational crisis.
7. The ultimate issue is seminaries churning out boys incapable of strapping on their big boy boots. When one gets married or ordained they make a commitment for life – not a “life of discernment” but a ‘life of celibacy”.
8. Yes divorce happens. Yes laicisation happens. Both are legitimate. But the difference is the attitude to committment. If a new husband enters marriage still discerning if he will committ to his wife than it won’t work. Same is true of new priests.
9. What is being said of Kirby indicates that he may be blurring the line, possibly not sleeping with people but flirting with the idea of it in a dysfunctional way.
10. If he were thrown out for this Tommy might have to act in the same way against too many other priests.
11. These are the rantings of a Goat who has seen too much, been tempted, had to bench mark my ministry to particular women over the years to ensure I dont over-connect. I have definitely wanted to compliment women in particular ways. Instead I have taken the words I wanted to say to spiritual direction and to prayer. Ministry does not require me to be perfect, it requires me to know my limits, risks and attractions.ministry is hard but it is never work when we want to be as self-less as our spirit will allow.

Like

8:53, Good post. People both lay and Clergy have lost of sense of the importance avoiding and running a mile from the “near occasions of sin” as much as from sin itself. Also the Clergy and the laity have lost all sense of a healthy fear of the Lord (like any wise Fisherman has a healthy fear of the Sea) and believe presumptuously they can do as they like and wipe the slate clean later. A lot of them have never even heard of the sin of presumption. Also God hears zero prayers from anyone who has any unconfessed mortal sin, leaving them further open to demonic oppression. It then becomes a vicious slow motion downward spiral. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us sinners.

When I was in upper sixth in school I knew I was gay. We had a celebration of mass and confession. Confession was before mass and always in an office where it was face to face with the school chaplain. During one confession session, ‘Fr’ put his hands on just slightly above my knee and I got an erection but he told me to close my eyes and say a prayer with him, his hands never went above my upper knee but I felt as though my erection was like the Eiffel Tower and so prominent. Looking back I now realise that he probably knew and could see this, while he never acted on it, this behaviour of Kirby should be condemned at all times and I am so glad Pat highlights this low level physical/sexual abuse that comes with a higher mental abuse mentality.

I made the comment above about the monks having been formed by Kirby so would be wary of how much it can reform. The adoration part of its life may end up being its downfall because otherwise it could be taken on as a priory by another monastery, staffed with monks from there.
TBH I think the best outcome would be it’s dissolved as an institute of diocesan right and the monks in vows can ask to transfer elsewhere.

The diocese concluded that DMK’s behaviour didn’t meet the level of sexual abuse. The DPP didn’t prosecute. The diocese have to take responsibility knowing that someone has been credibly accused of harassment.
The Tinder Swindler on Netflix, among many things, has shown how victims can be blamed. They cleverly present the story of the victims to show how they were conned. Some people are still blaming the victims.
DMK is absolutely toxic. When his victims want to get away, he has known time and again how to get them back onside. He knows the emotional strings to pull to get them back onside.
I’ve said many times before that I do not have confidence in the the former Prior nor do I have any confidence in the Priory. +TD must sort it out. The Priory is toxic. +TD will be contaminated if he doesn’t catch himself on and sort it out.

In the present case it is unlikely in the extreme that Kirby will have formed men able to continue as a stable monastic community. That is why he won’t take anyone who has been anywhere else – if you have you can see the all sorts of wrong going on there.

One has to wonder about the background stories of the remaining monks at the priory. They’ll all be queer, of course.

Kirby needs to be defrocked and booted out of Church, or he will go on doing this somewhere else as soon as the dust settles. The place needs to be closed down, disinfected, exorcised, name changed, and given to a responsible order. (Traditional or otherwise). None of this will happen though, and like Maynooth we’ll be hearing future abuse stories from Silverstream in years to come, while suckers like RN defend it to the hilt.

Gay men on the whole make wonderful priests, nurses and are caring in other roles — that’s why they usually work in such roles.
It is the abusers and nasty types who are disgusting — abusers and nasty types usually gravitate towards anywhere were there are vulnerable or unsuspecting people.
Likewise, not all Social workers or Police men / Women, are disingenuous.
Remember, you get your rotten apples in all gardens —- only when they are rotten, they make things look bad for the whole garden.
Not all priests or vicars and ministers are bad —- very much the opposite, in fact! However, the nasty groups really know how to make trouble for the good and honest ministers of God.
Scripture says the evil one will attack good people in different ways; that even means their good characters or good ministries.
This is why 1 Peter 5: 8 tells us, “Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”.
Verse 9 reads: “Resist him, standing firm in your faith…”
*
For those who believe: The devil is rather the one who, spiritually speaking, does everything in his, or her, power to cause disunity — disharmony — from the very centre, outwards. That is the evil one’s only goal: to separate and cause mistrust; to cause confusion, which ultimately leads to isolation from God… and when we are isolated we are much easy a target 🎯
*
And for those who do not believe: The diabolical person, or persons, (dia-bolos in Greek meaning ‘the one who divides’). One whose actions and intentions are evil and selfish, to the extent they have total disregard for others; certainly the unsuspecting and innocence (something, sadly, which Frontline workers can identify more than likely identity with!).
Victims of these evil and selfish men and women, often more than not, are more vulnerable than others.
That’s the very meaning of the phrase “The Diabolical” (from: Diabolos, meaning: the causer of disunity and disharmony; one who creates chaos and confusion; disunity among those unsuspecting. Allowing for easier attack of innocence… sadly, very real harm and attack; physical and, or other.
And whether or not you believe in the tooth fairy or Father Christmas, Or bother indeed both, is totally irrelevant.
The fact is: the manifestation of evil is very real in our world; even as described in the Bible: Old and New Testaments, and even the Quran.
If you don’t believe in the Devil (or even hell) —- then are not your options, upon valid reflection, now, at the very least a 50/50 either way?

Anybody who fulfils the criteria is sometimes deemed “on the register” or “on the spectrum”.
Although, it is always a good idea to allow this these diagnosises to be made by qualified professionals… which usually entails asking family members, friends or even work colleagues to fill out questionnaires about the person under diagnosis.
Presumably because these people know the person under diagnosis much better than the medical professional… 🙄

Salvador Ryan has great article in today’s Independent speaking about his experience in Maynooth and says it’s all about celibacy. That’s what the laity all feel too. The Church is a dead duck until it gets rid of mandatory celibacy. Lay people reading your stories have the same to say about them all … Celibacy. Lay people aren’t as scandalised as priests about half the stories here because they know in their heads it’s all about …. celibacy.

Celibacy is an excuse for abuse. Non celibacy doesn’t stop lay people breaking their marriage vows and abusing kids. It’s a tired old red herring as usual. No saying celibacy should not go, but it won’t fix a single thing about the current dysfunctional management of the Church and the activities of some of the Clergy.

Basic practicality, aside from the morality and power disparities, excludes monks not being celibate. It would be for diocesan priests where now only Greek Rite (and Oriental equivalents) and Ordinariate convert priests are married. Having no shortage of priests is only a very partial solution as Anglicans / Episcopalians can surely attest. That’s easy relative to the shortage of parishioners, laity.

Going back a few steps, Dom Andersen reported his concerns about the monastery to the bishop in February and April of 2020. DMK resigned as Prior in July 2020.
As DMK has been credibly accused of harassment, one might expect that Dom Andersen would become Prior of Silverstream? The bishop and the community should be working with Dom Andersen as opposed to working against him?

Seamus, that would be a totally reasonable and fair approach to take. He is also a priest and I believe the longest standing member of the community.

It’s obvious that you were forced by this blog to appear all weepy contrite about Dom Benedict. You keep saying you were dragged into this mess but you didn’t think twice about supporting unequivocally Dom Kirby. Even still you refuse to admit the delusional, dangerous man he is, unfit for any monastery or work as a miracle healer!! You are literally jumping out the You Tube screen shouting at priests and hierarchy about abuse and corruption, yet you refuse any of them a space for apologising or seeking mercy for their wrongs but it’s ok for you to tell us about your tears of sorrow and regret and beg forgiveness. Dom Anderson was seriously hurt by Kirby, your spiritual mentor and healer and you keep saying ” I didn’t look for this.” Well Robert, when you did become involved you left trails of great hurt and damage for Dom Benedict. Your almost 24 hour screenings are an attempt to gain credibility. I really wish you would stay for now in your ministry of supporting men in their life’s struggles. Your constant mini meltdowns are very unsettling and unpleasant to watch. I, for one am losing my respect for you and realising that Pat, while difficult, has a greater discernment about these horrendous issues. 5.18: That’s an unfair interpretation of events. Robert got involved with Silverstream and realises now that he misjudged his involvement. In the initial days of this story Pat was quite circumspect while Robert seemed to promise a thorough Report which, by his language and demeanour on videos was to be a shattering document. Pat expressed his approach which did not resonate with that of Roberts. Now the tone is different. I am glad an apology has been given to Dom Benedict and I pray he will receive it kindly and pray that he will find healing from the hurt and abuse he experienced and still experiences. Dom Kirby is now the bete noir who must be removed from the monastery before any further damage is done by him and his oblate associates and friends whom he seems to easily fool and deceive. Yes, all sinners must be given mercy and forgiveness when truly repentant. This Christian principle applies to all who sin and fall. I support all who are praying for and seeking to renew the Church and priesthood. I welcome all parishioners who work alongside us in parishes. I do not believe that haranguing people on videos will achieve any good. The interminably judgmental rhetoric by some is not conducive to necessary change – personal, communally or pastorally in the manner of Christ’s vision and way of life. I often wonder if some of the caustic and denigratory commenters ever become involved in their parishes or in any “people of God” movements to effect the changes they want. At least Robert is committed to gathering people in some way which I hope he will succeed in doing. However much I may disagree with his style, I think he can be a catalyst for something better in our faith expressions, parishes, prayer and in fostering a Christ, gospel led way.

What a great magazine. In the ‘parish team’ section of the magazine it’s wonderful to see lay people having substantial roles in the parish. That is very typical of North American parishes (and Protestant denominations). It’s something we could learn from here in Ireland and the UK, where too often the vision for getting laity involved goes no further than clericalising them by giving them jobs in the sanctuary or turning laymen into permanent deacons.

The four victims does clarify something which seemed strange. While there were indications that Fr Kirby was very off, the only thing which was close to definite was his harassment of Fr Andersen (although Kirby probably might claim he’s in the clear). Predators can be very controlled and controlling, but one victim would seem a bit unusual, now there are at least four, probably more. The compromised visitation suggests there might be a long wait until Silverstream is clearly and dispassionately looked at. Is it a traditional leaning Benedictine house or the HQ of the Kirby cult? Hopefully this is answered in a professional way, but I don’t hold out hope.

I welcome being informed as I visited Silverstream on a few occasions in the past and was impressed by my experiences. Now I am very sceptical about the foundation and have withdrawn my subscription to their magazine. I merely referred to the 21st January video as it seemed to have a sharp tone of a challenge to Pat re: Fr. McAlinden’s reputation beuig thrashed by this blog. There are distinct differences in reporting on all these issues. Personally I prefer the issues to be aired on Pat’s blog. Robert has his style but I am confused about some of his pronouncements. When I first came across Robert I was very impressed. I respect him but I respect him more for his insights into prayer, spirituality and church renewal. I think his ministry for men is very necessary and admirable. I hope and pray, despite my questions, that he and Pat can create a common purpose to make a real impact.
