If, as the monks of Silverstream would have us believe, the Priory got a clean bill of health from the civil authorities, why has Mark Kirby not been restored to his position as prior?

If NOBODY in Silverstream has done ANY WRONG why is a humble brother, Elijah, still the prior and the Great Seer Kirby, still on chains at the suspect Priory?
If Kirby was cleared of misbehaviour by both the church and civil authorities why has ne not been reappointed?
The truth is, that on spite of all protestations, the church authorities KNOW that Kirby was guilty of what Dom Benedict accused him of.
Dom B did not accuse Kirby of physical sexual assault.
He accused him of sexual harassment.
He also accused him of entering monks cells late at night.
He accused him of inappropriately touching semi naked monks while they were in bed.
He accused him of forcing monks to listen to the gorey details of his own sexual as a child at the hands of his two uncles.
This behaviour in a monastery is gross misconduct.
This behaviour by a religious superior towards his community is even more unforgivable.
A CULT
Robert Nugent, formerly close to Silverstream and Mark Kirby, and also a former oblate of the monastery after examine the facts has reached the conclusion that:
1. Silverstream is a cult.
2. Dom Benedict has suffered a great injustice that should be put right.
3. Kirby should leave Silverstream.
4. A group of properly formed Benedictines should be brought to Silverstream to reform it.
Robert is correct. Silvetstream is a cult and Kirby a cult leader.
The monls there have not received a proper Benedictine formation.
They are not Benedictines. They are Kirbyites.
THE DEENIHAN ENIGMA

Tom Deenihan the incumbent of Meath, has tolerated all that has gone on in Silverstream and continues to tolerate it
This is a serious question:
Is Tom Deenihan compromised in any way that makes him tolerant of Kirby’s antics?
This question needs to be addressed.
And will be addressed by this blog.

We have real concerns about Silverstream after recent happenings. Isn’t there a support group in Ireland for families and concerned individuals who are worried about cults where people who belong feel unable to get out or who feel trapped? My heart goes out to the monks who may have a genuine calling for monastic life. I do not think the nasty, horrible commentary accompanied by sexualized and caricaturing imagery and logos, is good for the majority of the monks. I truly believe it’s a miracle that they are holding together but I am worried about their mental, emotional and spiritual welfare. This on-going analysis must be a source of deep pain, darkness and uncertainty for them. Whatever about Dom Kirby, I worry for these other good men. Can we pray that God’s spirit come upon them and spur them to making necessary decisions. Is it fair or kind or helpful to make fun of these men? Something has gone wrong but can we try to hold back on the cruel mockery and judgment being flung at these men.

I’ve found a religious order which advertises for ‘real men’ although it still has a usual upper age limit of 35.
They say they don’t want effeminates, deviants or eccentric and candidates must be what is described as normal.
Perhaps this explains why there isn’t a single photo on their site showing more than 4 of them. And you would think going into so much detail about the habit would be a mistake….

‘they have found no cause of action against either Dom Mark or Silverstream Priory.
Subsequently, an independent external canonical investigation found no canonical case to answer.’
The first thing you see are those carefully phrased words which can cover the present situation where Kirby has to a backseat driver, where it would not be possible to say he is innocent of charges. Kirby probably put his draw of cash to good use, and probably has a file of useful information in case anyone proves to be awkward. The post itself suggested that +Deenihan might be ‘compromised’ in such a way.

Supposedly Dom Kirby resigned “for health reasons”. That is about as convincing an explanation as Dom Richard Purcell resigning his abbacy for “personal reasons”.

NCR were told in 2020 that DMK “has suffered from long-standing health issues and has tendered his resignation as Prior of Silverstream on the basis of his poor health. His resignation has been accepted and it is expected that Dom Mark will return to Silverstream Priory as a member of the community in due course.”
Some people have questioned if poor health had an influence on the DPP decision. Unlikely DMK can be reinstalled as Prior if that is the case.

+TD has blatantly protected someone credibly accused of harassment and has thrown the victim under a bus. Dom Benedict Andersen must be properly supported without delay.

FYI. Pat is quoting me in the blog. I stand over that quote. Dom Mark Kirby is a good man, but he needs help and support now. I mean that in the sincerest way. Dom Benedict has been treated in the most appalling way. Maybe Dom Mark can’t see this.
Silverstream could have reached out to me 2 years ago when I was drawn into this. I understand how the monks are well intentioned and want to help Dom Mark who is 70. But they are blind to the impact on Dom Benedict, leaving him to suffer.
This is the saddest saga I’ve seen, it is harrowing to follow, esp how I was blinded to the impact on Dom Benedict.
I have no criticism of the Bishop of Meath, he has been left to clean up the mess he didn’t cause. There needs to be closure and support for these men.
I would just caution those commenting on this to please consider the mental health impact on for the all the men involved. Dom Benedict needs support to move forward.

Robert, I think it is very inaccurate to say that Mark Kirby is a good man.
Good men and priests do not gain young monks trust and secrets and then weaponise that information against them.
Kirby is a victim of childhood sexual abuse and is a very repressed homosexual who has never been able to accept himself and has had to invent an alter ego – a holy man to whom God speaks directly.
Mark is a very damaged man who has spent many years damaging others.
I agree he needs help. Having him in Silverstream is unbelievably irresponsible.

Ok But he must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in his regard should be avoided. He is called to fulfill God’s will in his life and, and to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties and past he has suffered. He is 70, so I beg people to be compassionate. We have to be the bigger men now who help. And Dom Benedict needs closure asap!!

9.54 it’s actually Connecticut, Oklahoma and apparently Canada that have been manipulating for 50 years and since then got Meath in on the act.
Kirby was presumably told to join an order in his formative years to expiate the sin his abusers told him he’d committed, and those stuck up elements never lifted a finger to help him in all these years and when they don’t get the blame they snigger at the rest of the monks and the airport potboiler purchasers and the accountants.
Of course Kirby should know better and walk out into the void, as Robert and others did every time they dropped out of all those movements.
Kirby is replicating the models that were given him by Holy Madre.

For a few days I asked you did you approve of the ugly, sexualized, ridiculing and cruel manner of commentary alongside horrible, dehumanizing imagery and logos . I also asked that all of us should be conscious of the emotional, mental and spiritual well being of all monks, including MK. This is not in any way to condone any wrongful or abusive behaviour. It has taken you, Robert, a week to express any such concern. Let’s all be honest here. You are in daily communication with Pat as obviously you give him “permission” to quote you. How wonderful!! Now that you’ve settled well into this arena, why don’t you spontaneously forward your OWN opinions. You did not properly answer the questions put to you yesterday as you said you don’t have time!!! Robert, forget about the questions I put to you yesterday. Answer these questions: How can you countenance the continuance of “variations on a theme” as presented today in literally shredding these men to pieces? How do we reconcile the imperatives of Jesus today in the gospel vis a vis the awful, jeering treatment of these monks – “Love your enemies, pray for those who treat you badly, bless those who curse you …Do not judge; do not condemn; give graciously; pardon (others) and you will be pardoned; be compassionate as your heavenly Father is compassionate.. ” Do you approve of the denigration and mocking of MK and the monks as in today’s blog? I am just in from celebrating two masses and four baptisms and have two funerals for this coming week. I have just read the comments so far. I am imagining these monks – for whom I do not speak – at dinner. Just visualise the scene. I would think they must be very fearful, uncertain, despairing, in a dark place and feeling very frightened. From a human empathy perspective. Do you Robert, really care for their welfare? And I don’t want the response of a “tough love” soundbyte. I am appalled at your changed attitude of mind and heart. I know Pat is immovable but is at least consistent but you need to be more discerning. May I advise you pay attention to your own words – ” I would just caution that those commenting on this to please consider the mental health impact for all the men involved.. Dom Benedict.needs support to move forward.” All your words Robert. Very amazing. Try to practise them.

One of the most momentous events of recent history is unfolding in Ukraine and Russia. My own feeling is that much of this has to be with little man / little willie syndrome on the part of Putin, now trying to push his weight around and threaten his neighbours. Classic stuff. And, rightly, western countries / alliances are standing up to him. If war does come, which I think it will, it will be absolutely catastrophic in terms of life, liberty and the peaceful future not just of Europe but of the world. In the meantime, I am wondering what the Russian Orthodox Church is saying about all this, if anything ? I suspect that they have long since made a pact with the devil / Putin / the autocratic, authoritarian, kleptocratic regime in Russia, and will not say anything out of place. The Russian Orthodox Church also lives under some inflated illusion of its destiny within Mother Russia and has very grand ideas about its place and importance. In reality it is just a propaganda puppet in the hands of the Russian government.

Yes, and all very convenient for Johnson to deflect from his problems at home. And Ukraine is a democratic country; say that to the LGBT community! Conservative nationalist groups in the largely Eastern Orthodox Christian country oppose LGBT rights, and members of far-right organisations regularly attack groups and events linked to the LGBT community. LGBT rights groups say Ukrainian police often ignore homophobic or transphobic motives of the attacks, classifying them as hooliganism. Poland and Hungary both EU members, are to have funds withheld for their return to anti-democratic ways including repression of LGBT rights and violations of the Rule of Law. The reality is that many Eastern European countries want the benefits of EU membership and NATO without subscribing to core values.

Yesterday, Pat printed the gospel for today which I suggested was very timely for all of us. It’s a gospel which simply asks us to reflect God’s gracious love and mercy, however difficult it may be. We are given a template for living in God’s expectation of us, to imitate Christ in all things. What a challenge and an ideal!! Jesus puts the task about caring for the welfare of our enemy to the fore of our behaviour. Difficult. Absolutely. He’s asking us to be stubbornly gracious, to not pay back violence with violence, to not completely write people off, to not be deliberately cruel in our treatment of others. Jesus puts the absolute command of LOVE before us. He’s not asking us to forget wrongful and abusive deeds carried out. He is, I believe , asking us to keep the welfare of our perceived “enemies” to the forefront, whereby, with the heart and mind of Jesus, we always seek the betterment of LOVE over the ugliness of vieolence, ridicule, mockery, tauntung and condemning. Jesus showed us true forgiveness when on the cross: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing……And to the thief….This day, you will be with ne in paradise. “. Only true love as lived by Jesus (even for great sinners and those who fail frequently) can create a force for real goodness which, being of GOD, will effect the change and renewal we seek for ourselves and others. Constant love. It prevents us from continually putting a sharp sword through the hearts of those already condemned. To live this true “authentic” love is the litmus test for all who live in Christ. Can we cease the continuum of lampooning and mockery against our “enemies”?. God bless all the monks and all of us and help us absorb this great gospel blueprint given today.

Because mostly Roman catholic priests are gay, a part of those who are paedophile, would like to believe that Jesus was a single man…
Still that single man dedicated His life to the Faith not gay sexual relationship, because Jesus was straight!!! The only attraction was towards a woman called Mary Magdalena…

It doesn’t condone any wrongdoing or abuse but it certainly challenges our attitude. Jesus, Son of David, have pity (mercy) upon us. I do believe that we must show love and mercy, however unpalatable and changing, to all in Silverstream. As Jesus displayed in his life on the cross – love and mercy reign supreme – and must! My God, if anyone one of us was thrashed so much as the monks are experiencing, we’d be dead physically and spiritually!! Hey, true meaning at 10:16.
Love for Kirby here means he is removed from the clerical state, his vows dispensed and given that he probably has no resources, be given a pension by the diocese and put on a safeguarding plan.
Love for Anderson means he is given his letter of good standing so he can go to Clear Creek or wherever, and given money for the years of therapy he will need.
Love for the rest of Silverstream means the bishop stops them taking further novices for now and asks a sensible monastery to appoint a prior for a couple of years and then review.
Because love means stopping harm and making (I can’t believe I’m using this word) reparation.

What happens in Silverstream is no different to what happens in other monastic communities. It has been widely discussed here about what happened when Richard Purcell was in Roscrea. Richard was replaced by another. Sex has been replaced by alcohol. I do not know of any monastery that is not highly dysfunctional. They are full of men with repressed feelings, all there for different reasons. They are not safe or healthy places. Monks enter for strange reasons, become institutionalised and then this manifests itself in strange and deviant behaviour.

When you see all the various groups of victims of RCC abuse over the decades whether it be rape or sexual harrassment in seminaries, slavery and financial exploitation in mother and baby homes to name but a few outstanding issues they refuse to take responsibility for & resolve – the one overriding factor is that the Church continually shows that it is only interested in further undermining its victims with its cult like complicity in deceit and coverup & their vengeful, long term punishment against anyone who complains. Dom Benedict continues to be controlled and abused by denying him his letter whilst his abuser Kirby is being cosseted by the Cult.

Why are we importing African priests? The Vatican’s statistical office noted an “obvious imbalance” in the ratio of Catholics per priest in different regions. Globally there is one priest for every 3,314 Catholics in the world. But the balance is one priest for 1,746 Catholics in Europe, 2,086 Catholics per priest in the Americas and 5,089 Catholics per Priest in Africa. Indeed European and US Bishops need to stop bringing them over.

It’s the same with doctors, nurses etc. why are we spoiled westerners importing as many as we can from countries that need them far more badly? Crazy. Also unlike Priests plenty more young Irish people are willing, able and capable to be Doctors and Nurses if only given the proper education and enough college places. The fact is the existing consultants and the Irish Medial Association want to keep it a nice small lucrative closed shop.

Oh go away. The Eastern Orthodox Church in Ukraine is corrupt and backed by far-right homophobic nationalists. Go away Ukrainian bot.

@’4:42 Patriarch Kyrill will never consider instructing the head of state. The Russian Orthodox has since at least the time of Peter the Great always operated as a subordinate, no Church and State as two swords. Anyhow there will be no war, barring the usual low level hybrid stuff.
@5:17 the Ukrainian EO means more than one body, the Muscovite and the new Ukrainian Orthodox (which received a tomos from the Patriarch of Constantinople). The new Ukrainian Orthodox Church has been attacked for not attacking gays in fierce terms like Kirill does. Otherwise, think of it like maths, where there is the same value on both sides of an equation, it is discounted from consideration. Neither are keen on gays, with Moscow saying gay marriage is Nazism etc., responsible for ISIS (the CIA front not the goddess).
Random factoids, the Virgin Mary in the new super austere military cathedral is modelled on Putin’s mistress, Kabayeva. Kirill, KGB agent Michailov, has 55 hats ranging in value from $5000 to $27000. Hitler’s cap is there as a sort of relic, well it’s there. While he really doesn’t like the gays in theory and as a matter of public policy, he does not entirely loathe tender male caresses, monks as usual (standard stuff). Orthodoxy is barely practised in Russia, while Islam is. Chechnya has Europe’s biggest mosque, or so they say.

Lazarenko, corrupt former Ukrainian PM given refuge in the U.S., has resisted returning to the country. He still faces accusations for $200,000,000 looted by him during 1996–1997 from the government of Ukraine. If the U.S. were serious about democracy in Ukraine, they would deport him to face justice.

A Russian court has jailed for 21 years a former Orthodox priest, said to have adopted 70 children, for a string of child abuse offences.
Nikolai Stremsky was convicted of raping several children and other violent acts in his parish in the Urals in south-west Russia.
Stremsky was reputed to have Russia’s largest family and was decorated with a national Order of Parental Glory.
Barred from the priesthood he has also been stripped of his honour.
As an abbot in the town of Saraktash, Stremsky and his wife ran a foster home from the early 1990s, adopting children from orphanages in the region. Most of the 70 they adopted have since grown up.
He was arrested in 2019 and investigated for offences against seven minors, He condemned the allegations against him as slander.
Last year, one of his grown-up adoptive children and her husband were given suspended sentences for illegally restricting children of their liberty.
Sentencing Stremsky to prison in a penal colony, the court in Saraktash on Friday banned him from working with children for 20 years and removed his national parenting honour.

Sinn Féin’s Vice-President Michelle O’Neill called news of Mr Stalford’s death “desperately sad”.
“His friends and colleagues throughout the world of politics will miss his political contribution, and his constituents his local efforts and leadership across south Belfast,” she added.
SDLP leader Colum Eastwood announced the party’s spring conference, scheduled for Sunday evening, would be postponed as a mark of respect for Mr Stalford.
“Christopher and I knew each other for more than 20 years and this news has come as such a shock,” he said.

One of the very best films in the last forty years. Perhaps it will become an Epic. Ang Lee broke a few glass ceilings with this one…..hauntingly beautiful as a story of love and pain. It represents the complexity of what is yet a long way from our collective understanding. The actors were superb. I remember hearing Heath Ledger give an interview from the USA. In it he was questioned about the ‘war in Iraq.” He openly and honestly said his opinion was that it was all about oil. I said to the company I was in ” they will kill him” and they did…..Heath Ledger was a hero, onscreen and off it…..too good for this world. Broke Back Mountain should be prescribed cinema for anyone who says anything in the public space about relationships….of any crude category that unfortunately societies are stuck with…..a few contributors on this Blog would get a good emotional workout bt being open to a change of mind. Pat is right….it is very sad….but then as Shadowlands very poignantly captured ( quoting C.S. Lewis); the pain now is part of the happiness then.

Bill I am disappointed you think this was one of the best in the last 40 years. I much prefer Holding the Man for a gay love story, loosely based on the truth and one of the actors (character John) is gay in his personal life.
