PAT THE BLOGGER v PAT THE PASTOR.

Members of The Oratory sometimes say to me that they worry about the fact that people think that Pat the Blogger does not do justice to the man they know – Pat the Pastor.

And I can see their point of view.

Years ago during a retreat the retreat master talking of a priest said:

“The priest should be a lion in the pulpit and a lamb in the Confessional”.

And this duality can happen in all our lives – even at the basic level of being able to display tough live when required and tender love when also required.

All humans have “contradictions” and some of these contradictions can be used by Providence.

I very much see this blog as part of my vocation.

The Roman Catholic Institution is rotten to the core and many bishops and priests are rotters too.

There is no problem with bishops and priests being very weak. All us humans are weak and all of us are sinners.

But the problem is that the institution is EVIL and many bishops and priests become servants of evil.

It is this second category that this Blog is challenging.

Apart from being God and man there is a other duality in Jesus – the Jesus of righteous anger (the Temple) and the Jesus of utterly compassion (Jesus restoring to life the son of the widow of Nain).

As Christians we are called to share in the total vocation of Jesus. We must be full of righteous anger when God is mocked or humans are hurt.

And we must also be filled with the compassionate Jesus when dealing with those suffering or poor in any way.

THE STYLE OF THE BLOG

People complain of the style of the blog. They say it is unkind, cruel, unchristian etc.

That is because this Blog is often doling out tough love. And that has its place.

And this Blog has resolved many horrible situations:

Orgiastic Maynooth, the priest who made a parishioner pregnant and having a miscarriage alone, the sauna going abbot, priests showing their genitalia to young men via the Internet, the gay altar sex priest etc.

All this situations required tough love and challenge. There were jobs for the lion and not the lamb.

PAT THE PASTOR

This year I am 46 years a priest and I love being a priest now more than I ever did.

God, in His goodness, has always sent people my way people who needed tender loving, friendship, guidance, help and direction.

And I always try to respond.

YESTERDAYS EMAIL FROM DOMINIC WHICH SPEAKS FOR ITSELF:

Pat, it did my heart good to see you this afternoon, and to catch up. It was great to see you looking so well, and to be back at the Oratory. It is hard to believe that over thirty years have passed since you found me a place on a drug treatment programme. When I came to you, desperate for help, you welcomed me into your home, gave me tea, spent time listening to me, told me great stories and gave me hope. At that time, I was struggling to make it through each day, and I was so grateful that you continued to stay in touch with me, and to spend time with me. When you asked me if I would be interested in attending a drug treatment programme you knew of, and I told you I would, you drove me to my appointment. During my months as an in-patient, you continued to visit me, offering me support and bringing me tobacco and chocolate. I was introduced to a 12 Step fellowship whilst an in-patient, and continued to attend 12 Step Meetings when I was finally discharged. Through the 12 Step programme, I have remained clean and sober. I really do not like to think what would have become of me, if I hadn’t of benefitted from your intervention in my life. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the help you gave me, and for the example you showed me. Dominic M

This email is not being reproduced here to solicit praise. Human praise can be very empty.

Such emails reassure me that my life has been meaningful and my greatest pleasure comes from helping the struggling.

Dear Pat,
I have come from a place where I have been deeply hurt and offended by the Church. God bless you for calling out the callous and unholy men of the church in. I’ve never been more disgusted. You are a sincerely honourable man. You have exposed disgrace after disgrace, and you will be my port of call in future. May God Bless you Bishop Buckley with many many more years of good health and glorious ministry. Long live Bishop Buckley!

Pat, you helped Dominic to get back on his feet with unconditional love and this is Christianity in action.
On a different note, I see no difference in a loving sexual relationship between a gay couple and a hetrosexual couple married in the eyes of the church who use contraceptives banned by the Catholic church. As artificial contraception is considered intrinsally evil by the church and the couples are therefore according to the church are in a state of mortal sin.But I believe the church turns a blind eye to this because the excommunicated couples would give a sharp decline in church numbers. What of the priests who would say privately that they are doing the right thing. What state are they in according to the church? They carry on as normal in their clerical duties.
As God made us all we must discern why he has allowed so many gay people to be born and for what reason.

+ Pat, I have no doubt that you are a caring and good pastor to the people to whom you minister. However, your blogging activities are extremely valuable for the Church at large, and you are able to bring the light and truth to a number of hidden, sordid, areas of the Church’s and the clergy’s lives. This is often not very pretty, but it is necessary. Only when the light of truth is shone in to those dark corners will things change, and conversion come about. You are one of the few voices that gets heard, and one of the few voices at which bishops and clergy quake, used as they are to being unaccountable. But, they fear you, and that is good. So, please do keep it up.

Catholicism places high praise on ‘dialogue’ and is prone to self-identity as an ‘expert in humanity’ – this might be the PR and what is ‘put out’ but get to know them, up close and personal, witness the dark underbelly of clericalism (clerical gossip, ambition and contempt for lay people) and you discover that the last thing they want to do is dialogue, discuss, grapple or discuss anything which unsettles them or rattles their pedestal.
This Blog promotes dialogue, isn’t afraid of discussion or even the earthy human flotsam and dross which is inevitable in any open forum.
From the Pope down – they could all learn from this Blog because open dialogue and free discussion is a hallmark of a mature society and church.

You have indeed helped a lot of people Pat and nobody can take that away from your sincere, pastoral and Christian vocation.
Its a shining beacon amongst the truly evil monsters hiding behind the clerical collar. They hate you exposing them and their puppet cathbots posting here every day seek to bring you down with their references to cruelty and harshness.
Part of the problem is you give them freedom to constantly post the evil baloney and completely disregard the truth. Its extremely frustrating for the genuine, truthful contributors.
May you continue to expose the hypocrites and liars. Wishing you continued good health and rest assured many, many people are so grateful to have you as a true priest.

Pat, Many, many priests are kind, caring and very committed in their ministry. You rarely acknowledge this. Many of us may have personal struggles but we keep going. We practise our ministry with as much fidelity and commitment as possible, often alone and in greatly challenging situations. No priest with experience denies that there is much that is wrong, corrupt and which is in urgent need of total renewal. We are all horrified at any abuse and wrongdoing. I feel that you use the worst of abuses and corruption to damn, judge, condemn and crush all. I believe you are diligent and unstoppable in your seeking of absolute truth about the level of wrong in all its manifestations but I also believe you transgress human decency and fairness in this objective. I don’t approve of the deliberate, personalised sexualising of your “enemies” as with Dom Kirby and Archbishop Martin. That’s very ugly. You make your argument better without resorting to this ugliness. Pat, just remember that language is important when attacking others relentlessly. Some words may push individuals over the top. And, please remember the many many priests who are very committed to their ministry.

Very complicated. My mother-in-law is in Kiev. They woke up in August 1991 and declared Ukrainians when they had never spoken the language and considered themselves Soviets. The Ukrainian language and culture were forced on them, and they were treated as second class citizens. My mother-in-law’s grandfather was Polish and he was arrested in Kiev under Stalin and executed in Siberia. In spite of that, she is pro-Russian. It’s hard for me to comprehend, but as Bishop Pat says it’s complex and we shouldn’t believe how media spin.

Every now and then we reappraise our ministry. What enables me to keep going and to find meaning in ministry is the incredible opportunities we are given to help others. The moments of being with the sick and elderly housebound, those in material need and emotiinal pain, funerals, though often difficult, school work…If I focus in the “crises” I despair, when I focus on the pastoral opportunities, a greater purpose and contentment is found. I wish you blessings, Pat. We all need to pray for one another in ministry. These times are very challenging.

All crafted to justify your callous and cruel blog, which allows names of innocent people to be bandied about, by faceless and gutless trolls having a wicked and cruel laugh.

The venomous comments are not surprising because the church (corrupt clergy especially but all of them really) hates not to have control and hates anything that subverts their power.
We see that in the racist islamophic comments here especially – it is really rich because in Ireland the church basically had a whole nation in its thrall. Poland would be another example. The church had the law wrapped round its finger but threw it away because it preferred to allow clergy to abuse children.
We also see this attitude in the troll comments here obviously intended to overload the blog with nonsense and scurrilous comments about individuals. This, like every reputation management strategy of the church, is at best a short term strategy and destined to failure.
In fact the psychiatric community has a word for actions which frustrate your own aims – it’s called self-sabotage and it’s one of the marks of personality disorders.

This week I spent almost 6 hours trying to help a family in drugs related issues. They are terrified. A son is deep in the drugs war, one of a number in our community. It is horrendous. It is just one of many similar situations encountered in the parish. I know of other colleagues in similar situations. It is part of our work in some disadvantaged areas. I believe we should be well able to acknowledge the good pastoral ministry of the majority of priests. We should always pray for one another. None of us is perfect.
I suspect we all aspire to be better and to be more Christ like.

2:04pm Safer you stay in your Parochial House at night, Father. Pat it appears Leo’s XIII’s vision of a conversation between Christ and Satan has materialised. The Evil One said he would poison the Church from within. It has become clear that young clergy are now foster Satanic livelihoods. One cannot defend unChristian living by saying that our God is one of infinite mercy. A God of infinite mercy He is, but abusing this does not bode well. Why are our bishops standing by priests who are questionable? Why do some charlatan priests change appearance so often? Where do they go? How fast are they running?

Pat, I know you read these messages before you post them or decide not to post them. So you have decided to censor two of my messages. They were critical of you and your approach to blogging. But they were not defamatory in any way, they did not include any intemperate language. And I referenced the fact that I am a survivor of physical abuse, by priests and Christian brothers.
So you have decided to exclude my comments simply because they challenge your Tough Love narrative. I pointed out in those messages that your Tough Love message is reminiscent of the attitude of my abusers, who packaged their cruelty in the guise of love.
You will probably not post this message either. But you will read it – which is more important for me. You will read it and know that I (and, I’m sure, many others) see you.
