OAKLEY AND NORTHAMPTON IN MAJOR ROW WITH NIGERIAN RELIGIOUS ORDER

Oakley – bishop

DIOCESAN STATEMENT

STATEMENT REGARDING THE MISSIONARY SOCIETY OF ST PAUL

On Thursday 17th February the Vicar General, Rev Canon Michael Harrison released the following statement to clergy of the diocese of Northampton.

At the end of February four priests of the Missionary Society of St Paul, ministering in parishes across our diocese will be leaving.

The general and regional superiors for the congregation have taken the decision to remove the priests from our diocese.

In March 2021, Bishop David received a letter request from the general superior in Nigeria that one of the MSP priests, serving in Northampton diocese should be removed from a parish and return to Africa. The priest in question did not wish to return and, given no reason for concern to remove the priest, out of compassion for the priest, the diocese of Northampton stated that this was an internal congregational matter for the MSP leadership. Following several further requests for the priest’s removal, the congregation stated in November 2021, that they would remove all MSP priests from the diocese of Northampton in January unless the diocese deliver the priest to them. Once again, the Diocese stated that this was a congregational matter and Bishop David would be happy for all MSP priests to remain serving in the diocese of Northampton and neither he nor the diocese would intervene in an internal congregational concern.

Eventually, it became obvious the intent of the congregation would be to remove all priests from ministry in the diocese of Northampton and Bishop David requested a timeframe, which, in mid-February was agreed to be the last weekend of February.

The missionary society of St Paul (MSP) have been active in ministry in our diocese since 2005. During these years, many MSP priests have ministered in parishes across our diocese. Currently in ministry in our diocese are Fr’s Francis Eyo (St Ethelberts, Slough), Joseph Udoh (Our Lady of Peace, Burnham), Livinus Onyebuchi (Our Lady of Lourdes, Aylesbury), Eustace Durugbo (St Margaret of Scotland, Luton) and Pius Duke (St Joseph’s, Bedford).

Bishop David offers his sincerest gratitude to the priests for their support in celebrating the Sacraments for the people of God in the parishes entrusted to them and assured them of his prayers in their continued ministry.

PAT SAYS

Word from Nottingham clergy is that the new bishop, David Oakley, is at war with the superiors of the Missionaries of St Paul in Nigeria.

The St Paul’s wanted one of their missionaries back from Oakley.

The priest refused to go back, and Oakley seems to have supported the priest.

Now, the St Paul’s are removing ALL their priests from Oakley’s diocese.

And the danger now is that the St Paul ‘s will withdraw all their priests from all English dioceses.

This will not endear Oakley to his fellow bishops.

ARTHUR ROCHE

Soon to be cardinal Archbishop Arthur Roche is no fan of Oakley’s. It appears that Roche did not regard Oakley as bishop material?

Is he now being proven right?

If you want the lowdown on Oakley ask Father Marsden

All seems very strange. If the MSP wanted one of their priests to return home, why did the priest refuse to go? Was this priest enjoying Church life and ministerial priesthood in a way he could not do back in Africa? Personally I believe it’s a matter for the MSP only.

8:17am Due to shortage of vocations, priests do defy their Bishops more these days and all the better chances of success for them if they have their connections in the wider community to assist them in staying put.

This problem has been noted in France. A priest from Francophone Africa moves to a nice parish in France, which has a beyond-desperate shortage of priests. After a year or two of the 21st century French standard of living, he is strangely reluctant to return to ministry in his poverty and corruption striken homeland.

10:51am Nothing strange about it, it’s an inevitable consequence – after all no one in Ireland complains when certain priests are never moved more than a stones throw from their silver spoon birth cradle and they and their “social influencer” friends & families spit the dummy big time from the pram if the Bishop dares to try moving them from their chosen nest whilst other good priests are given no say in where they are sent because they have no social or financial clout behind them.

Like

I don’t think he is. As the missionaries are religious it’s up to their order to sort staffing of their apostolates and also disciplinary matters if a priest won’t move.
Of course they would discuss changes with the bishop but as a courtesy UNLESS there is a concern about the priest.
It feels like something isn’t being said about the priest?

It shows a lack of judgement and prudence on the part of the diocese. The cleric in question could have sought exclaustration from MSP. The society has close links with Kiltegans and could have availed of their counsel.

The most interesting thing in that article is that there’s a parish in Luton under the patronage of St. Margaret if Scotland!

Remember, these MSPs are Nigerian. In many dioceses and religious orders in Nigeria there are internecine conflicts based on ethnicity and tribe. They do not get along for the most part. What happens eventually, especially in the religious orders, is that they split provinces in to ethnic and tribal divisions, and go their own way. Don’t underestimate the loyalty to the tribe amongst them. So, this may well be one of those internal squabbles amongst the MSP. To be honest, by and large, Northampton will be better off without the MSPs. While some individuals can be good, as a group they are trouble, and bring more problems with them than they solve in terms of manpower and staffing parishes. Some of the issues were aired yesterday in respect of the egregiously vile and wicked attitudes exhibited by that nitwit in Portsmouth. As a general point, I find clerical reverse colonialism which goes on with the importation of foreign priests somewhat distasteful. It deprives countries of manpower that they have nurtured and paid for; it often brings associated problems with it, such as yesterdays’ example; some groups are notoriously infamous for selling the title deeds from under the nose of the bishop if they get a chance; and most importantly, it temporarily absolves bishops in this country from facing the reality of the vocations situation, and kicking the can down the road, rather than. having the balls to talk about innovative and sensible ways of ensuring that the sacraments and ministry of the Church is available to the faithful. And, forget the racist accusation. I’m just saying it as it is. Fact.

I worked in one West African country during the 1990s. I saw a certain amount of this first hand, where I was it was getting ready to turn violent when the civil authorities stepped in and took control of the situation. They ordered the local bishop to stand down and then went to the tribe he was in conflict with and some of them disappeared. They also found the tribe was stockpiling weapons in the local church hall. One of the missionaries there, an Italian who had been there for over 40 years, explained to me that at that time every African country had at least one white bishop because without any tribal loyalties he was often the only reliable bishop. That of course has now changed and most of those countries just don’t have reliable white missionaries to choose from.

8.37, are you a priest? Your post certainly suggests it.
Never worry yourself about sacramental ritual. Ritual isn’t the issue here; grace is. And grace can be obtained without sacramental ritual.
The Faithful are deprived of nothing without the presence of priests; in fact, I believe they would thrive spiritually and psycologically without them. Christ does not need middlemen to dispense grace, as though he were some wholesaler.
Any concerns about the Faithful here are yours alone.
People do not need clergy.

Vin of Westminster is notoriously cautious when dealing with foreign clergy, especially from Africa and more particularly from Nigeria. He doesn’t let them by and large take over as parish priest, and keeps a very close eye on the materials and financial benefits of the parishes in which these clergy are found. He has been burned on a number of occasions and he’s not going to let it happen again. Other bishops seem to be pretty loose and free with bringing in foreign clergy. Mott in A&B has a huge amount of foreign clergy. He will learn his lesson, as has Vin, eventually. Watch that space.

Diversity in clerical backgrounds should be a positive but the selection skills of Bishops like Amy Martin and others is sadly reflected in some of the imports.

I see the Southwark school debacle is getting deeper and deeper. OFSTED has initiated a snap visitation. Not surprised. Everybody else is weighing in, not in Southwark’s favour. Including The Tablet. I suspect Bully Boy Wilson has bitten off a bit more than his chubby chops can manage. The most interesting point in The Tablet is that people, including the government, will be wondering why they should be paying out millions and millions of £s to Catholic education when the Church is putting forward a view of people and sexuality that is completely counter to how the majority think and feel and in contradiction of the law of the country. Do we really want to end up being lumped in with the Muslims and other nut jobs ? Because that’s the way it’s going. And all because we have a clerical leadership that struggles to understand not only sexuality in a realistic way but also its own personal struggles with sexuality, including denial, avoidance, frustration, hypocrisy and lying. https://www.thetablet.co.uk/news/15147/dispute-deepens-in-southwark-school-that-banned-gay-author

I’m not surprised at this debacle at St. John Fisher School when you see that rag The Tablet calling it ‘John Fisher’ School as well as supporting visits of authors who are not compatible with Catholic teaching. The insult to the great Martyr of the so called ‘reformation’ of the despot Henry VIII will not be forgotten by those parents who choose to send their children to a Catholic school and expect them to receive a Catholic education. St John Fisher pray for us.

RTE Radio 1 - Dara O Briain speaks to Marty Morrissey about difficulty experienced accessing information on his Adoptionsays:

In his interview with Marty Morrissey on RTsr Radio 1, Dara O’Briain described the system on obtaining information on his adoption as having been made “unnecessarily difficult” by the religious institutions. Record keeping demonstrated zero regard for basic human rights of the individuals concerned. When he did finally obtain the contact information he required to meet his mother, on meeting she informed him of the “expediency” and “shame” that was put on her when she became pregnant in the early 70’s. O’Briain was also critical of the sparse information provided by institution in his file and zero information on his father. He has an excellent relationship with his adoptive parents who supported him in his quest to find his birth parents. His personal experience of this system is highlighting how the institutional control of information makes discovery extremely difficult for families seeking to reunite with loved ones wrenched away from them by the religious institutions for financial gain and social control purposes.

This overreliance on overseas priests has to end. All it does is prop up a failing model of church. 4:21, don’t you realise that most of the publicity and references are for “St Patrick’s Day”! The secular society might be wayward God love them but they haven’t forgotten St Patrick.
I thought the RCC embraced the parades as way of keeping people out of the pub on their day off from their Lenten abstinence.
Some people forget that our churches are open between Christmas and Easter. People aren’t going to Church on St Patrick’s Day morning and yet want to celebrate a day for the man who brought Christianity to our island!! Fr Brendan is right to speak out about this madness.
The faithful and secular society are delighted to have a double bank holiday weekend. Ireland was 2 down on the European average for Bank Holidays. Ireland now will only be one day behind. Secular Ireland probably should have their own national day. Maybe a Harvest festival will suit them. People need to regain the knowledge and habit of growing their own food.
Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit.

Firstly Our Churches are now open daily for Mass and all other religious services and the people are beginning to return to them;
Seccondly; I was at mass in our local church yesterday and it was full to capacity. Our parish priest blessed the shamrock and we sang Hail Glorious St. Patrick for the day that was in it. He was assisted by three eucharistic ministers in the distribution of holy communion so Seamus religion is not lost.

They all utterly loathe each other and gossip incessantly about how much hatred they have.

Clerical bitchiness and gossip a completely different level of hate.
It depends, if you excuse the phrase, whose inner ring your in.
VGs have an especially tight inner ring (oh Mrs)
Same with bishops – they bitch to each other and small group of confidants.

Secular clergy despise religious – you wouldn’t believe it but they do – they are insular and threaten easily.
