FATHER DAVID VARD INTERVIEW

WHOLE RTE PROGRAMME

https://www.rte.ie/player/series/the-tommy-tiernan-show/SI0000001918

DAVID VARD gave a very good and confident interview.

His appearance was very good and neat. He spoke well and did not appear to be nervous.

So, a very well done interview.

BUT

When a priest goes on national television to explain and justify his life and the “goodness” within the Roman Catholic Church, he does set himself up to be both lauded and challenged.

He stated that he “fell in love with God and the Church” when he was 18.

I can say that the same thing happened to me – but while I remained in love with God, I fell out of love with the Church – because of what they were like and did to me.

Father Vard has declared before all of Ireland that he is both “celibate and chaste”.

But when Tommy Tiernan said to him that if he had sex it would NOT be a sin – Father Vard agreed with him.

But that is NOT the teaching of the Church he loves.

The Church he loves requires him not to have sex at all – even with himself!

Thankfully, like Amy Martin and Brian D’Arsey, he did not go on to say he would have loved to be a husband and father but had sacrificed all that for God.

But he did say that being married and being a priest would be UNFAIR to his wife and his priesthood both.

What about all the good married priests and ministers?

Are they not as pastoral and good as celibate priest? Does it take away from their marriage?

MAYNOOTH

Father Vard was ordained in Maynooth in 2017.

That means he went in there in 2010 or 2011.

It also means he was there for the Maynooth Summer of Love in 2016 and the “Strange Goings On” (Diarmuid Martin) in the years leading up to it.

I have NEVER heard that Father Vard took part in any strange goings on.

But surely, he was aware of it. If he said he wasn’t, then he is either in another world or lying.

I suspect that Father Vard is gay. And, indeed, he may be the most holy, chaste, and continent priest in Ireland or the whole world.

But now that he has appeared on national television to talk openly about himself, his life, his chastity, and the goodness of the Roman Catholic Church, a lot of integrity will be expected of him.

Remember Old Michael Rasputin Cleary on the Late Late Show promoting no contraception and no sex before marriage – while all the while sleeping with women and making babies.

RASPUTIN CLEARY

And our friend Brian D’Arsey stayed with Michael Cleary every week for years in Dublin and NEVER SAW NOTHIN 😀

“Pull the other one”, Brian. There’s bells 🔔 on it.

Well said Pat.
It was a good interview and I’m sure this priest is doing a lot of good.
I too suspect he is gay and so what.
Except he’s left himself open for very close scrutiny at the tender age of 30.
He did seem appalled at the crime and corruption at the heart of the roman Church here with their perverted enslavement of people, rampant sex assaults on innocent children, selling babies and burning and burying them in sewers. No to mention the sick Clearly living a hypocritical life, condemning decent people and sucking up to the institution his entire, miserable life.

I wonder about you people. I really do.
How do you know that Father Vard is doing good? You say you are sure he is, but how can you be sure? Do you know the man personally?
Doing good generally means having the money to do good. Cynical as this may sound, it is nevertheless true. Money does make the world go round, doesn’t it? But Father Vard does not work for a living; instead, he is financially dependent on others. Siphoning off the financial resources of even the poor. Technically, the man is a burden, most heavily on the poor. Is that really doing good.
It’s just presumptive prejudice, isn’t it? Father Vard must be doing good… because he’s a priest. It’s as elemental, and infantile, an equation as that. To you.
Have you learned nothing about priests (nothing at all) since the tsunami of sexual scandals started to sweep over the Church?
Roman Catholic priests should never, ever, be trusted, especially around children.

Bishop! Pat can you stoop any lower that this. Fr. Vard did not go on to tell his story, he was invited by RTE. Tommy Tiernan does not know who is guests are until they actually appeared on the show with him. Why do you feel it necessary to blog about this young priest who I believe is a very good priest? Yesterday a comment was made by a person he/she stating that Fr.Vard told Tommy Tiernan that he had not had sex for seven years – this statement was libelous and same is being taken care of. You, as the owner of this public blog then followed with a comment which said “He’s 30 now. So, he has not had sex for 7 years – 2015? He went into Maynooth at 18 and has not had sex since he was 23. Does that mean he had sex in Maynooth. And was it with a blonde female? What a scurrilous comment to make about him. Note has been taken also of other comments in relation to Fr. David with reference to him visiting Tommy Tiernan’s house. Give it up Pat this man is a young priest and deserves credit by everyone for his interview last night.

Why is RTE still doffing its cap to the RCC? The interview was too benign for my taste.

A state broadcaster should not be a showcase for a discredited and dysfunctional institution like the RCC.

Fr David Card is full of shit. Who does he think the is to go on TV and talk like he does about falling in love with God and his calling. Load of bollocks. Such self serving and self aggrandising shite. He’s full of the usual clerical ‘look at me’ narrative. I’m so special. Ive been called. I prefer my clergy just to be quiet and get on with the job. Trouble is with Fr. Vard, having set himself up so, he is likely now to get shot down. I guarantee there are a few stories there to tell, and having exposed himself in such a precious and self-important way, he can expect those stories now to be told. Watch this space.

The falling in love with the church rhetoric is just wrong in every way (the bride of Christ thing is as well). It suggests that the church is a lover and that it is a transferral of a sexual relationship.
Whereas in reality we know you don’t make love with the church, rather it fucks you over.
You, Pat, being a case in point.

Like

Servile clericalism very obvious in this pat, far-from-probing interview.
The host fawningly, flowerily, presents Vard’s ordination as ‘a journey into love’. (Shades of Patrick Kavanagh?) Vard reiprocrates, of course, by speaking of priesthood in much the same elevated, romanticised way. (And why wouldn’t he? He had this host eating out of his hand.)
I’m disappointed, but not surprised, that, after all the damming paedophile/ephebophile scandals involving priests (especially Irish priests on Irish children), an Irish state broadcaster could still, unabashed, present accession to Roman Catholic priesthood as some sort of selfless, heroic, ‘journey into love’. It was not short of absolute farce.
If the so-called ‘journey’ had been described (more honestly in light of all the terrible, clerical sexual scandals), as one of utter self-love exploitative of others, then not only would it have made more sense and been more honest, but it would, too, have been much, much more credible.

Like

12.47: Helen, whats “ating” you? Your journey into love must still be in its early stages or perhaps hasnt yet begun. If you truly are a woman, what man would desire a pain like you? He would need to be blind. You present as someone who, if in any position of authority or service in the Church, would be bossy, intolerable, condescending and very off putting. Your type has ruined many parishes. Are you a feminist crack pot ideologue, who, not happy with destroying the beauty of womanhood, as exemplified by my mother and sisters and many female friends, are now seeking to smash men and masculinity? Father David should not be mocked by your derogatory, arrant nonsense and confused thinking. (Secretly, i think youre a man!!).

Like

I’m not convinced Father Vard is of the marrying kind. I think he’s on the other bus. I find when clergy go on about the ‘pain’ of being single, of not being able to marry or to have a family, and what a generous sacrifice they are making for God and the Church, it is usually an attempt to move the focus away from what they really are. Namely, they really don’t want to get married, they really don’t want to have a family, they really don’t want a heterosexual relationship, it really does suit them to be single and to engage in other interests and predilections, usually homosexual. It’s a feign to move the attention away from what they really are. If they were very serious about their ‘sacrifice’, then they would just get on with it rather than telling us about it. So, the Father Vard’s of this world, stuff a sock in it, and spare us your ‘pain’ and ‘sacrifice’, Please ! It’s boring !

No, Fr Vard does not deserve respect. Respect is earned.

Fr Vard willingly gave obedience to an institution he knows is morally corrupt all the way to the papacy. By doing so, Vard has expressed gross DISRESPECT to every man, woman, and child ever hurt by the institutional church: by priests, in other words. Men just like him.

I have nothing but contempt for any man morally weak enough to do such a thing.

If you can fall in love with God and say in the same breath that you’re also in love with the church, you aren’t living in reality.
If you can go through the summer of love in Maynooth and claim to be unaware of strange goings on, you have ignored them deliberately.
If you are a priest and claim never to have been aware of any misconduct by other clergy or seminarians you are a liar.
If you are aware and haven’t done anything about it you are a moral weakling.
If you then keep claiming to have raised stuff and be against misconduct and abuse you lose any moral authority.

Because if you actually did anything serious to try to stop misconduct, abuse and corruption in the church you would be out on your ear.

This is why there is no such thing as a good priest.

This was old time when the nephew was often just one of a Pope’s sons or grandsons and the best of them had a specific office, the Cardinal Nephew. Paul III made one grandson Alesandro Farnese the Cardinal Nephew, and another Ottavio held dukedoms in the Papal States (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardinal-nephew#/media/File:Tizian_068.jpg). Now for the man love aficionado, Julius III met a handsome youth, Innocenzo in Naples. I have no comment to make on anything he said out of a respect for his person at this time. Seven percent of human communication is verbal. David’s right foot made tapping at certain times in the interview… a behavioural communication… one would need “ an expert “ to suggest what might have been what was being communicated. However, it was the rapport between Tommy ( I really like him as a human being… he got up Drennans nose years ago and Drennan gave him what’s for it publicly) and Father David Vard that was extremely interesting as television. Tommys pupils were heavily dilated, he was gentle and kind on his guest… for whatever reason. David Vard was very comfortable with him. Tommys invite to his guest to his house/ home very curious. As I have Blogged before on this site, the most dysfunctional relationship on this island is between RCC priest and ( the) people. I remember years and years ago, Gay Byrne had as his guest William Shatner. Gay Byrne towards the end of the show said to Shatner ; “ Well, you are a lovely man Mr. Shatner.” That was decades ago. To Whom It May Concern

There is a tendency, even today, to believe that ordinands for the priesthood are somehow acting heroically, selflessly, and self-disregardingly for Jesus Christ. This delusion once held great traction across the Roman Catholic world, but is now in steep decline. Though, as I said, there is, sadly, still a tendency to see these men in such a rose-tinted way.

Every ordinand for the priesthood, especially those in the last thirty years, is, in my opinion, a self-serving moral coward and rogue, because he must have KNOWN that he was entering one of the most morally corrupt institutions in social history and must have known on whom he was turing his narrow back: not just on Jesus Christ, but on all the little ones who have been sent to horrible deaths after suffering terrible abuse at the hands of priests, and their protectors. None of these ordinands can claim that, as they were not involved in the sexual exploitation of children by priests and their protectors, that their hands are morally pristine. They can no more claim this than I could claim such a thing if I williingly joined the Mafia.

Ordinands to the priesthood these days especially desrve the deepest opprobrium, since they have expressed utter contempt and disregard not just for the sacrifice and person of Jesus Christ, but for the suffering inflicted on the innocent by the institutional church.

Would be nice if he did. Also he never told us about his new life or profession.

9.06 Do you feel better now you’ve vented that ? Clergy may like to think of themselves as a profession. Nothing professional about them. Nor you…..

Good point- he is an angry unpleasant individual who spreads anger and unpleasantness. Upper Kileavey has never fully recovered from the damage he inflicted there.

8.06: Strong words Helen. Very strong but most unfair to all priests. Your generation or that of your parents I imagine passed by the gates of orphanages and laundries knowing that all wasn’t well behind those walls but still passed by. That attitude by Church, society, politicians, judiciary and state was repugnant and morally bankrupt at many levels. That all of society knew doesn’t absolve the Church of any of its abuse but you cannot taint everyone with the same stroke. Do you believe that all Germans should still carry the shame of their war crimes against humanity? Do you believe that all politicians should forever hang their heads because of their collaboration in these abuses? What about inspectors from the Department of Education – they did nothing even though they were warned and told expressly about concerns. Should this agency be scrutinised? Helen, lastly, if you are interested about the future of the Church, do you believe that the Church would be a better, more caring, compassionate, transparent and more relevant if women had greater roles of ministry and service? After many years of ministry, my answer is yes. However accusatory and condemnatory you are of me as a priest, your attempt at an annihilation, while very honest and challenging, doesn’t deter me from continuing in ministry. No.

8.41 Can you name one priest who has seriously contradicted his bishop on any subject/matter in public on this island in the last twenty years ( and remains a priest)…..? Cowards. Helen is very accurate, pity you find it so damaging.

8:41pm Statistically you are probably over 50 years old and institutionalised – fact-check: you’ve sold your soul to the devil 👿.

If you were ordained within the last thirty years, then I accuse you of nothing beyond your willingness to remain in service to an institution you cannot credibly deny is, like a bar of seaside rock, morally corrupt throughout.
My deepest opprobrium is reserved for those ordained within the last thirty years. As this time passed, knowledge of institutional crime undoubtedly grew and grew, to the point where it was undeniable and had become prevalent across the world. Even so, men like David Vard continued to present themselves, through promises or vows of ordination, to an institution hideously dark with the most wicked corruption.
Have you even the remotest idea what message this sends to those criminally abused by the institutional church? Your church? It tells them: ‘we support this institution rather than you’; ‘we believe this institution rather than you’; ‘and we are loyal to this institution, not to you.
Men like David Vard, given that they could not at ordination express ignorance of the true character of the institution they were willingly choosing to serve, are, in my opinion, the most contemptible of moral weaklings and cowards. They deserve the deepest opprobrium. In fact, they should be shunned in the streets, etc. In this way, I am at one with Charles Stuart Parnell over Captin Boycott.

Helen has spoke some of the most sense ever composed on this blog. I second Bill. Almost all priests are cowards and hypocrites.

Fr Vards interview is classic vocation trope they are indoctrinated to give out – par for the course, pedestrian, predictable and laden with repression at every level – they can’t resist talking about sex – he’s telegenic and articulate so he will tick boxes – the type Vinny like and seminaries roll out as models etc.
Honestly, boring and passé – change ye record as TT might himself say (and does) in a comedy routine describing a priest ‘as a big woman of a man’ I gather TT likes his clergy with something of the Baptist about them not these card board cut outs – although he did give him as easy time of it – wonder why?

@9:24: ” they can’t resist talking about sex…..” you say. Spot on.
Quoting and paraphrasing from “1916: The Mornings After ” by Tim Pat Coogan:
“The three monotheistic global religions -Christian, Islam, Judaism- all use sex as an adjunct to religious power……..their concern with matters sexual often manifests itself (my capitals here for emphasis) IN AN OUTWARD APPEARANCE OF PIETY, ACCOMPANIED BY INWARD HYPOCRISY AND CRUEL AND UNNATURAL FORMS OF SEXUAL SUBJUGATION, ….eg, the fetid Irish Catholic impulse to control Irish female sexuality….”
Little wonder so many now see religion for the malign carbuncle it is, ….and now have neither time nor respect for it?

Fr David vard is a decent man being vilified because he became a priest. Can’t tar everyone with the one brush. Stop telling lies about him. Wake up. There was abuse within Buddhism too And Islam and protestantism
And of course atheists that proclaim to be enlightened there are abusers. But not everyone right. Robbing is a sin. Dear atheists have you sinned? Violence from atheists. Mass murder in the name of Karl Marx. Anti christian hatred. Where does hatred come from ? The devil loves you to hate people and God.. abortion the deliberate murder of the innocents. Any of you haters. What if you had been aborted ?not good. Promiscuity lacking moral respect for oneself and the other person or person’s. Have you sinned. As Jesus said they without sin caste the first stone. Who are you to judge the poor man. He is so gentle and sincere. He is at peace anyway even though you all tell hateful lies about him. God forgive you. . Jesus was lied about too.
