LETTER TO FINTAN MONAHAN
Dear Fintan,
As Laurel and Hardy would say: “another fine mess”.
And this mess, this increasing mess, Fintan, falls fairly and squarely at your feet!
Any by allowing the Ger phenomenon to continue, you are leaving yourself and the diocese wide open to litigation for grave negligence.
Apparently, Ger has referred to me as “evil”?
I do not believe that Ger is “evil”.
But, Ger is clearly dysfunctional, dangerously immature, and relates to women, especially vulnerable women, in seriously worrying fashion.
He represents a danger to women in any appointment you would give him. And knowing that, you giving him an appointment is you being an accessory to abuse.
Ger, sensing the irreconcilable, has started taking his HGV training to be licensed to be a bus driver.
I’m not at all convinced that bus companies would want a driver who poses a threat to vulnerable women, and there are very few bus companies, I imagine, even in Clare, that have all male buses.

THE CHURCH OF IRELAND OPTION

Apparently, Ger has had one meeting with the Church of Ireland Dean of Limerick to explore a switch to the Church of Ireland.
This will not resolve Ger’s primary issues.
Ger needs to engage in intensive psychotherapy where he can discuss all his issues, including his interaction with women.
I do not see him having a future in priesthood or ministry in any church.
After therapy, he is young enough to embark on another fulfilling career and, if fortunate, discover love, marriage, and parenting.
Fintan, Ger may not want to accept reality and move on. As his bishop, it is your solemn duty to give Ger guidance and indeed care for his growing number of victims.
If you do not do this, your failure can only be the result of a Freudian conundrum.
Keep going the way you are, and excuse the pun; both Ger and you yourself will end up under a great big bus.
Your brother bishop,
+ Pat Buckley

Itβs ok Pat. Straight priests get a pass. They are normal. It is normal behaviour. A prayer. Repentance. Then on to the next parish.
I wonder does Ger have children? The law of averages would suggest he does. You cannot throw your sausage about and not expect a return on your investment.

Whatβs his obsession for clerical life – Doubtful if COI will take him on. Anonymous at 9:50 . You canβt just make a statement like that; they were women who were originally in touch with him for reasons and of a pastoral nature, i.e., his parishioners. In most cases he was the priest charged with their pastoral care- this is not a role which should be carried out without due diligence, care and respect. He has let them down, big time, sadly.
This is not just one woman he has fallen for who happens to be a parishioner, itβs an increasing number of women. His behaviour is somewhat funny on one level, but then we see these women are getting upset, hurt even, at being embroiled in his childish antics.
He should go away for five, or even ten-years, then see if he still has a calling to serve. He needs to mature emotionally first though.

Agreed with THG 10:53, there are bigger fish to fry. It is easy to hunt clergymen and attack the faithful. Episcopal leaders must take Episcopal responsibility. Correction of a typo in my earlier comment.
They are all from the one class. They started out together in Maynooth as first years. That class had many issues, including one suicide and a Judge’s nephew ordained a transitionary deacon who never applied for priestly ordination. A Dean who left and several older seminarians who who similarly became deacons but not apply for priestly ordination and even the Dean left, a vice-president/president who was effectively exiled to France, and other deans whose names always seem close to allegations.
The head of all of this crap-show was Dermot Farrell who led the changes in formation processes.
Can he account for his leadership before he leads Dublin in the same direction?
Shoot for the big fish, not the small guys. If Ger wants to drive a bus, so what. It might be a fine thing if he could enter a healthy relationship and avoid what the church forced us older guys into.

This may co-occur with masked dyslexia (in which literacy difficulties are less obvious).
As these traits may have run in the family, there may have arisen an atmosphere of covert exasperation or shame around those family members affected in different ways.
These characteristics are mistaken for a βspiritualβ temperament.
2 β COATS. Priests usually have two, at least one of which was purchased in self reliant fashion, and they donβt keep underestimating their own measurements.
3 β GIFTS AND FRIENDS. In the event of a gift needing dropping off when he is out, a network of friends of the priest can handle it, e.g you drop it off with the nearest one, who will βpop it roundβ; this also involves the friends knowing each other.

6.34: I agree with you. However we judge Ger, there has to be a point when we leave him some privacy to sort out the mess in his life. By now this man will realise he has not acted responsibly. To continue to pour barrels of condemnation on him at this stage is counter productive. While I abhor any woman being taken advantage of by any cleric, the women in these dramas too are being brought into a very undignified brawl. It looks like some women are scorned, others motivated by jealousy and some are seeking revenge. I donβt believe all the smutty details of any of their liaisons with the Rev. but isnβt it time for all of these people to act maturely and responsibly. In light if tomorrowβs gospel about the woman caught in adultery and about to be stoned, perhaps we should all try to see ourselves, not so much as the βready to throw stone brigadeβ, but as, like Jesus, the one ready to forgiveβ¦The words of Jesus to this wounded woman, βNeither do I condemn you.. β are words all followers of Christ must carry in their hearts, especially clerics who are supposed to exemplify their Master!! The problem with a lot of clerics is they think they are “entitled”.
Entitled to do whatever the hell they want, behave in whatever way they want and sod everybody else. It’s brainwashed into them that they have been “chosen”, that they are special, a people set apart. This is reinforced by the actions of their bishops. Take Bishop Bling for example. Pastor of the sheep? Nope. He lives more like a medieval king in his palace with his minions running about after him. No wonder D& C is going down the tubes. His “entitled” priests are free to behave in whatever way they choose. Christ doesn’t come into the equation anymore. This behaviour is replicated amongst many if not all dioceses in this country. A bunch of deluded fools who still think they are “entitled” but who are constantly being exposed. Years ago if a priest told you to do something you wouldn’t dare to refuse as he was seen as Gods choice on earth. Oh how blind were we all. the sooner they realise that they have NO entitlement the better
