GER FITZGERALD CONTEMPLATING WHETHER TO BE A BUS 🚌 DRIVER OR COI MINISTER.

LETTER TO FINTAN MONAHAN

Dear Fintan,

As Laurel and Hardy would say: “another fine mess”.

And this mess, this increasing mess, Fintan, falls fairly and squarely at your feet!

Any by allowing the Ger phenomenon to continue, you are leaving yourself and the diocese wide open to litigation for grave negligence.

Apparently, Ger has referred to me as “evil”?

I do not believe that Ger is “evil”.

But, Ger is clearly dysfunctional, dangerously immature, and relates to women, especially vulnerable women, in seriously worrying fashion.

He represents a danger to women in any appointment you would give him. And knowing that, you giving him an appointment is you being an accessory to abuse.

Ger, sensing the irreconcilable, has started taking his HGV training to be licensed to be a bus driver.

I’m not at all convinced that bus companies would want a driver who poses a threat to vulnerable women, and there are very few bus companies, I imagine, even in Clare, that have all male buses.

THE CHURCH OF IRELAND OPTION

Dean Sloane

Apparently, Ger has had one meeting with the Church of Ireland Dean of Limerick to explore a switch to the Church of Ireland.

This will not resolve Ger’s primary issues.

Ger needs to engage in intensive psychotherapy where he can discuss all his issues, including his interaction with women.

I do not see him having a future in priesthood or ministry in any church.

After therapy, he is young enough to embark on another fulfilling career and, if fortunate, discover love, marriage, and parenting.

Fintan, Ger may not want to accept reality and move on. As his bishop, it is your solemn duty to give Ger guidance and indeed care for his growing number of victims.

If you do not do this, your failure can only be the result of a Freudian conundrum.

Keep going the way you are, and excuse the pun; both Ger and you yourself will end up under a great big bus.

Your brother bishop,

+ Pat Buckley

It’s ok Pat. Straight priests get a pass. They are normal. It is normal behaviour. A prayer. Repentance. Then on to the next parish.
I wonder does Ger have children? The law of averages would suggest he does. You cannot throw your sausage about and not expect a return on your investment.
I wonder

I think bus driver is about Ger’s level. I doubt if the C of I Dean will give him a second glance. They have standards ! And I doubt if Ger meets those standards. So, stick with the bus driving, Ger.

A lot of middle class nonsense here. There is nothing menial about being a bus driver. Middle Class = Mildly Condescending.

Typical Roman arrogance. Can’t keep it in his pants so thinks another denomination will take Roman rejects.

But 11.30pm But denominations do take those who can’t keep it in their pants. I could quote a few examples.

Yes, 9:03. The C of I being Anglican, is Catholic as well as Protestant so you would expect the errors of Rome to appear.

Can anyone explain, by any measure, how the Anglican church in Ireland is the “Church of Ireland”?

Like

9:56 Because it’s the national church, like the Church of Sweden.
If the church of Rome wanted to be the national church it shouldn’t have named itself after a banana republic.

Yvonne was in mourning for her dad and had a difficult background. She was vulnerable.

Carole has had lots of difficulties too.

Don’t think that because these women are articulate, they are not vulnerable.

I have spent a vast amount of time talking to them and listening to them.

Like

But it’s quite serious for a priest to engage emotionally with vulnerable women.

What does it do to them?

Like

Because Anglicanism is organised on national levels. By definition, Catholicism is transnational or universal (katholicos).

Who is going to provide a reference for this dysfunctional individual who clearly also has a food obsession as well as his other obsessions. He doesn’t appear to have made much use of his year as a MIS & clearly still has no respect for women – so hardly suitable material for driving the late night bus. What’s his obsession for clerical life – Doubtful if COI will take him on. For his own sake and for the sake of other potential victims of his dysfunctional behaviour, hopefully he will go away & sort himself out in a job that does not involve him having power or access over vulnerable women as that hasn’t exactly gone too well to date for him or them.

Like

One wonders about Ger’s mental capacity. How many women does he have on the go? How could he be so stupid? The writing is on the wall for him.
One also wonders about Caroles psyche and her motivations too. She is not so innocent in this exchange.
The Bishop must act. If not, he is compromised.

These are troubling times for Fintan Monaghan. The inquiry into the sexual abuse of his former two Maynooth Seminarians and Ger’s continued exit strategy from Catholic Priesthood. In both cases Fintan aligned to the institutional church regarding denial, cover up and yes breach of duty of care.

They are troubling times but that’s Lugs own fault for not acting as any Ordinary should and dealt with it immediately. He should have administered a swift belt of the crozier instead of letting the scandal carry on. He’s hopeless and a disgrace to the Hierarchy.

You’d expect this type of stupid behaviour from some fool in their early twenties. Ridiculous. You’d think as a priest he’d have some idea of right/wrong but clearly not.
Carole – fair play to you. Is the ‘wan’ in the picture from Castleconnell? His treatment of you is a disgrace.

As far as I know the woman is from Castleconnell. There was another young woman I spotted him with in the cafe on a different day. Thank you. More details to come out soon. I’m not looking for revenge. I just want the truth to be told and then I can move on. I was not given any resolution or closure so this is why it has to be done on the blog.

Bad enough when a normal man does it to he’s woman, it’s heartbreaking when you care about them. it’s atrocious when a priest does it.

These women only have themselves to be responsible for.. .. Ger is an adult, therefore is responsible for his actions… Stop blaming the women in these stories. However his reputation should be made so widely known that no more women fall for his lies and abuse of their affections and if more do, that they are going into it aware of the likely outcome

Anonymous at 9:50 . You can’t just make a statement like that; they were women who were originally in touch with him for reasons and of a pastoral nature, i.e., his parishioners. In most cases he was the priest charged with their pastoral care- this is not a role which should be carried out without due diligence, care and respect. He has let them down, big time, sadly.
This is not just one woman he has fallen for who happens to be a parishioner, it’s an increasing number of women. His behaviour is somewhat funny on one level, but then we see these women are getting upset, hurt even, at being embroiled in his childish antics.
He should go away for five, or even ten-years, then see if he still has a calling to serve. He needs to mature emotionally first though.

12:34 Good Grief, Fr Ger hasn’t a lot going for him with the ladies on any level has he!! 23 seconds, it wouldn’t even be worth the bother of saying “Hello” to him!!! Never mind buying him dinners, ice creams, new anoraks, Oh! and he needs to tap someone for a pair of new shoes, it looks like he’s been creeping in the undergrowth for too long in the shoes he had on in that photo on here! I’d feel sorry for him only for the fact that whether it be intentional or unintentional on his part, his behaviour to women is abusive but RCC won’t have an issue with that given their own poor worldwide record in that department to date.

Look at recent names here. Ger, Ryan, Thomas…. All one call. Allegations are similar except in orientation.

Why do you not turn the focus back onto the seminary and the people responsible for their training. These men can only be as good as their training, and ultimately it is the seminary council that is responsible for their behaviour. Dermot Farrell and Hugh Connelly were their seminary presidents… What have they to say? It is easy to hunt the individual priest over the last 4 days… but what about the big fish +Pat?

Like

I don’t think this blog ever let Maynooth off the hook.

But the men have responsibility too.

Like

Agreed with THG 10:53, there are bigger fish to fry. It is easy to hunt clergymen and attack the faithful. Episcopal leaders must take Episcopal responsibility. The Irish media let the Episcopal leadership off the hook after they blatantly circled the wagons in a window dressing move to minimise the scandal. Opportunity lost to show real leadership.

Like

Correction of a typo in my earlier comment.
They are all from the one class. They started out together in Maynooth as first years. That class had many issues, including one suicide and a Judge’s nephew ordained a transitionary deacon who never applied for priestly ordination. A Dean who left and several older seminarians who who similarly became deacons but not apply for priestly ordination and even the Dean left, a vice-president/president who was effectively exiled to France, and other deans whose names always seem close to allegations.
The head of all of this crap-show was Dermot Farrell who led the changes in formation processes.
Can he account for his leadership before he leads Dublin in the same direction?
Shoot for the big fish, not the small guys. If Ger wants to drive a bus, so what. It might be a fine thing if he could enter a healthy relationship and avoid what the church forced us older guys into.

1 – Difficulties in planning, problem solving and figuring out what to say, when, probably indicate specific learning differences (SpLD), usually ignored by snobbish academic establishments / employers. (But most countries have laws requiring and / or supporting reasonable adjustments.) (Coaches and consultancies, may be able to assist.)
This may co-occur with masked dyslexia (in which literacy difficulties are less obvious).
As these traits may have run in the family, there may have arisen an atmosphere of covert exasperation or shame around those family members affected in different ways.
These characteristics are mistaken for a “spiritual” temperament.
2 – COATS. Priests usually have two, at least one of which was purchased in self reliant fashion, and they don’t keep underestimating their own measurements.
3 – GIFTS AND FRIENDS. In the event of a gift needing dropping off when he is out, a network of friends of the priest can handle it, e.g you drop it off with the nearest one, who will “pop it round”; this also involves the friends knowing each other.
4 – I think bus driving too structured, and CoI not structured enough.

Getting a HGV licence Class 1 or 2 isn’t as easy as Ger or clergy might think – in the UK a Class 1 driver with an ADR license can earn £50-70k it’s a demanding and difficult job. I don’t think Ger is up for that – too much like hard work and I’m not sure a priest of his low calibre has the requisite aptitude.

6.34: I agree with you. However we judge Ger, there has to be a point when we leave him some privacy to sort out the mess in his life. By now this man will realise he has not acted responsibly. To continue to pour barrels of condemnation on him at this stage is counter productive. While I abhor any woman being taken advantage of by any cleric, the women in these dramas too are being brought into a very undignified brawl. It looks like some women are scorned, others motivated by jealousy and some are seeking revenge. I don’t believe all the smutty details of any of their liaisons with the Rev. but isn’t it time for all of these people to act maturely and responsibly. In light if tomorrow’s gospel about the woman caught in adultery and about to be stoned, perhaps we should all try to see ourselves, not so much as the “ready to throw stone brigade”, but as, like Jesus, the one ready to forgive…The words of Jesus to this wounded woman, “Neither do I condemn you.. ” are words all followers of Christ must carry in their hearts, especially clerics who are supposed to exemplify their Master!! Not to forgive is to imprison people in their past. It is not God’s way.

Getting a job will not be easy, especially if his background checks show a complaint was made against him by a vulnerable adult. Also the Anglican church in Ireland will not taken him on as a priest straight away. They will ask him to join a congregation and live as as lay Anglican for a number of years, before considering ministry. Plus his ‘interactions’ with married women will be problematic for them too: the c of I has enough adulterous clergy as it is.

The problem with a lot of clerics is they think they are “entitled”.
Entitled to do whatever the hell they want, behave in whatever way they want and sod everybody else. It’s brainwashed into them that they have been “chosen”, that they are special, a people set apart. This is reinforced by the actions of their bishops. Take Bishop Bling for example. Pastor of the sheep? Nope. He lives more like a medieval king in his palace with his minions running about after him. No wonder D& C is going down the tubes. His “entitled” priests are free to behave in whatever way they choose. Christ doesn’t come into the equation anymore. This behaviour is replicated amongst many if not all dioceses in this country. A bunch of deluded fools who still think they are “entitled” but who are constantly being exposed. Years ago if a priest told you to do something you wouldn’t dare to refuse as he was seen as Gods choice on earth. Oh how blind were we all. the sooner they realise that they have NO entitlement the better
