ARE THE IRISH ROMAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS PREPARING FOR A PRIESTLESS CHURCH?

A SYNODAL PATH – OR A CYNICAL PATH?

JOHN FLEMMING in Killala invited 34 members of parish councils at his Chrism Mass.

FINTAN MONAHAN inducted 24 new lay ministers at his Chrism Mass in Ennis.

That’s 58 new lay workers for two western dioceses.

FINTANS WORDS

Welcome and Congratulation to New Ministers

I welcome and congratulate with great delight and joy, the 24 New Ministers, 12 in the area of Catechetics and 12 in the area of Pastoral Care.  You have responded most generously to the invitation sent out from the diocese 4 years ago to come forth and minister in your chosen areas in which you have an interest, talent and expertise.  You have applied yourself with diligence, dedication and hard work in prayer, discernment and study with the assistance of Mary Immaculate College in Limerick and in your pastoral assignments in your native areas.  You are now warmly welcome in your new role to assist, lead and minister among the faith family of the diocese of Killaloe”!

FLEMMINGS EFFORTS

The Catechism of the Catholic Church even goes on to declare, quoting the first-century bishop and martyr, St. Ignatius of Antioch, “that without the bishop, presbyters, and deacons, one cannot speak of the Church” (#1593). So much for “the action of the whole

PAT SAYS

The Catholic faith is centred around the SEVEN SACRAMENTS and the bishops and priests who are ordained to celebrate those Sacraments.

With the exception of Marriage and Baptism priests and bishops are the Ordinary ministers of the Sacraments.

We Catholics do not traditionally believe that a non ordained person can celebrate the Eucharist, the Sacrament of Penance, Confirmation, Holy Orders and the Sacrament of the Sick

So, if there are no priests and bishops those Sacraments will disappear.

As mentioned in the above article there is a growing belief that it is the gathered Assembly who appoint the priests to preside and thereby make Jesus present.

This goes against two thousand years of tradition.

Will the RC priesthood disappear or not?

220 replies on “ARE THE IRISH ROMAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS PREPARING FOR A PRIESTLESS CHURCH?”

No priests no sacraments is a threat or taunt bishops throw around – the sacraments of penance and ordination are later conflations and didn’t exist in the early church – marriage predates Christianity and the couple administrate the sacrament to each other – the sacrament of anointing was not reserved to one man in the early church but to elders.
In extremist lay people can baptise an infant so why not ex extremis?
Transubstantiation is a medieval construct – the early church celebrated an agape meal.
Hey Ignatious of Antioch would say the church needs bishops – he was a bishop – but it’s nonsense – where two or three gather Jesus is present.
The priesthood is a redundant profession as the singular fount of grace and the sole administrator of the source and summit of the Christian life.
The stunt Finton played is that simply a stunt – the real revolution won’t be a revolution it will come because through slow but sure decline because the scandal of child abuse/cover up/corruption the idea of a good bishop or authentic priests is bollox andlay people – the People of God – will vote with their feet stop going to church and stop donating and form house churches.
Not in my lifetime or yours or maybe several generations but it’s coming baby it’s coming.

Regular readers here will know from my previous comments that I think all religion is a load of bolllox. Maybe as more people throw away the pernicious clerical shackles of the RCC brand, there will develop an increasing number who cast aside the whole shebang of religiously hoping for a happy hereafter, and concentrate more on making life here on earth a better place for us all.
I’m sure the amount of wasted energy and resources devoted to religion could be put to much better use.

S o the B, your post is way off the mark. Jesus told his followers to forgive sins or retain them, therefore the sacrament of penance was set up by Christ himself, and this meant Catholic priesthood too. You need to go back to school to learn about REAL history, nit the imaginary stuffnyou spouted on here. And those marraige you mentioned were not SACRAMENTAL, so no relevance to Catholic marraige, which Jesus setnup himself.

The anointing of thebsick was done by the priest, because Jamesbwas an aplstle and therefore he gave the power the Apostolic Succession…to thevanointers thereforw they were all priests. I said it already, go back to school to learn praper history, because you dont know it. Your post lacks all scholarlyncred.

I think they are, but it’s one of a number of other changes, all of which are being attempted by stealth with disastrous consequences:
Changing the teaching on homosexuality.
Trying to deal with the drop in numbers of priests.
Increasing laypeople in management roles (the bishops want to dodge bullets).
All guaranteed to create uproar when done by stealth, especially among the 1962 crowd because they think stealth change was what Vatican 2 was about.
TBH at this point it would be better to call Vatican 3 have a schism and let both sides be separate and both claim to be THE church.

The Irish church is dead. The bishops no longer believe the catholic faith, and are trying to invent a reason for existing. Their liturgys are dead…devoid of the animation of the holy spirit. The forthcoming sale of Maynooth and the permanent disposal of former seminaries such as Clonliffe is evidence that the bishops lack faith and hope that there will be a need again in Ireland for those facilities. How funny that there are 12 new catechetics pastoral workers in Killaloe. It’s a safe bet that the children of these catecheticists are lapsed, and their grandchildren are unbaptised. The catechists didn’t pass on the Faith in the home yet now, somehow, they will pass it on to strangers? I’d also love to know what parts of the Church’s teaching they will be catechising.

The same is true of all of the RE teachers and Diocesan Advisors, they used to qualify their own children’s lapsing by saying “when they get older they will come back to the faith” that was thirty years ago. Like you said the other day, who would want to become a priest? Who would want their child to become a priest?
You are condeming yourself to a lonely life. The natural desire to form an intimate relationship is prohibited. Parish councils run the show with their own agenda and arguments will ensue.
RCIA, confirmation and First Holy Communion groups are run by laity, usually older white middle class women.
Parishes generally have a school and a few hundred people spread across the three Sunday Masses. The priest cannot get to know everyone. In this he becomes the churner out of sacraments. Gone is the pastoral care.
I admire you Bishop Pat and your ministry. I know a number of independent ministers, often worshipping in a repurposed garage or outbuilding. People may mock but they know and care for their little flock. They know each by name and are there in times of need.

Like

Pat’s assembly is reminiscent of early Christian communities, and is largely modelled on them.
Romanist dioceses, on the other hand, are modelled on the provinces of imperial Rome. Rome is gone. A hint of things to come for the Church of Rome? They are already underway.

Like

And the laity doing Communion services and the rise of permanent deacons has removed the need for priests. Pastoral workers are the new collaborators of the bishops. All you need do is have a bishop visit each parish once or twice a year, “preside” at Mass and confect enough Hosts for the rest of the year. During the year lay people of the retired teacher/librarian class and unmarried lesbians can “animate the assembly” and “be Church”.
That’s the inevitable outcome of the policy for decades of thinking that involving the laity in the Church means clericalising them and bringing them into the sanctuary as “Me, too” mini-priests.

At the no, I’m reading a book titled ‘in the closet of the vatican’.
****
It made me boiling cos of their audacity and sheer brazeness of the cardinals, prelates, nuncio’s re their double lives, duplicitous as most of them don’t have faith. Just mainly prestige, lust of power and money, nothing more than that.
*****
Rcc is dictated from top down as Catholic laity have no power over them. The only power that the laity have over rcc is to withold their monies or donations to rcc re Church collections on Sundays.
***
I couldn’t understand some Catholic press reporters in Rome fawning over them.
******
That book discuss cappa Magna to my surprise especially , Burke(not surprised re him) and two other cardinals(never heard these two but more surprising all the same) . I thought I was the only one 🤷‍♂️.
*****
That book hardens my stance more towards rcc as I didn’t want to have anything to do with them cos the more I read from that book re corruption, gay mafia, inability of jpii to do something about it, but at the same time, keep my relationship with God. These are two different things distinctly.
****
Lots of cardinals, bishops or prelates or nuncio’s have no faith as it would feed down the ranks in turn more faithless church.
****
Its coming, coming, not in my lifetime re rcc becoming more unrecognisable, no faith, more like part athiest, part pagan beliefs.
****
Rcc is shredding a lot of them now as they come out into the open. They are in a massive decline except for Africa and philliphines.
***
Rcc here in Ireland is probably collapsing except for some pocket rural areas where faith is strong. My observations re knock few days ago indicated to me that the laity don’t believe what’s coming from bishops mouths or priests mouth. To my surprise, mass ended in quick 30 mins, communions were distributed by lay ministers, no priests at sight, as the only priest who said the mass scooted off v fast, away from the die hard Catholic ladies. Such is their attitude as laity aren’t stupid to see that. 🙈

I rant against rcc for their past and present heinous sins cos I see it as Christian duty to moan or complain against rcc. On judgement day God will ask you a question, did you make or rant rcc in order to correct rcc ways? 🤷‍♂️😉
***
I did to that extent but I doubt it that you did cos you wouldn’t go against your Bishop, wouldn’t you cos he holds all your cards as you swore total obedience to your Bishop, but not your god.
It was my strategy to go to Knock and confess it, then be done with rcc after reading Martel book. Plan was to use one of precepts to my opportunity for now, then i decide what to do later on.
****
FYI, I don’t regard knock as the holiest shrine, it’s a desolate, empty place, grey feel vibe re weather, surroundings etc except for the old church which was different in terms of vibe. I know one holiest place abroad as I visited there many years ago.

Some of the comments today so far are a little unkind and unnecessarily cynical. We have justifiable reasons for criticisms of the Church, its management, personnel of all kinds, leadership etc…Over 35 years ago those of us wise enough and observant began to see the trends of change and challenge, log before the abuse scandals erupted and we engaged meaningfully with parishioners to respond to changing parish needs. Many of us recognised very gifted parishioners, some very professional and dialogued with them to create more dynamic and inclusive parishes. Our efforts were well rewardrd with the support of professionally trained pastoral leaders and by people skilled in nusiness leadershio, education and interactive management paradigms. I was fortunate to have worked with both priests and laity who were very visionary at the time, the early 90’s. I try to bring those same templates to present times, though now older and more challenging. We either believe, as followers of Christ that we are each called to service, albeit differently, or we believe there’s one way only, the old way. Some of the mystery and reverence of the old way is beautiful but we know we have to radically create a new understanding of what it means to be a community gathered in and around Christ. Why, when efforts are made by bishops and clergy to renew our Church and faith and parishes, are we greeted with a cynical ridicule? Why the cynicism and nasty commentary? I’m curious why Pat who is forever challenging the status quo now seems to berate and scold anyone who dares to be different, visionary and creative? Pat is fortunate: he’s an independent pastor and can literally do and believe what he likes. He can define his ministry in the knowledge that he’s not answerable to anyone – except God hopefully – no priests, no laity, no management, no parishes, no schools – and good luck to him. He has the luxury of changing his teachings or beliefs overnight! Can we applaud the genuine efforts being made by many bishops, clergy and parishes? Let’s not go into a Robert Nugent rage??

Martel gave us a clue as these cardinals or previous popes as regards to their homophobic stances or uttered such statements, more likely they are homosexuals (either practicing non practising). It reminds me of KOB public statements or his stance on gays which were very homophobia at extreme end.
****
Then Martel went on to proceed with benedict xvi previous past statements on gays. It gave us more insight into benedict’s mind. It showed us that he’s a homosexual with homophobia attitude which was quite common among gay cardinals especially trujillo whose fondness for rent boys plus his association with drug cartel in Medilion.

In other words, any cardinals that utters such homophobic statements more likely to be a homosexual. It made me think of other cardinals such as Burke, mc Carrick, weakland, KOB et al. That was a dead giveaway re their statement in public. Hence their double lives.

Saw a photo of new Bishop last year or two as I thought he was obviously gay cos of his face. Although I could be wrong there and open to correction. Its usually gay people with a delicate sense of gaydar can detect it more easily than a person with heterosexual orientation. I rem ex gay friend telling me that a certain priest who used to work in deaf chaplaincy now moved to a parish in South Dublin is gay. I thought he was telling porkies but I asked another gay person who said the same thing as my ex gay friend. So I only take their word for it cos they can detect it well if not, better than I do. Benedict red shoes was a dead giveaway in my observation but no proof to confirm it until Martel book.

So you see rcc for what it is now, a gay Church or a church with 50% to 70% gay especially at the Vatican or curia level.

Then a story aboutapprix 10 Swiss guards were being chased by some cardinals. Such was their brazen attitude in chasing young handsome men and think they can get away with it🔥🔥🔥

I grew up in Catholic boarding schools where there was a lot of boys with homosexual orientation around including CBS and deaf boys at that time. What I love best about this blog is the clerical troll or trolls who make the many comments along the lines today…
…. and thereby reinforce the image problem the priesthood has and incidentally hasten the decline of the church.
Great one, guys. 🫢

Only one priest comments here (the one who talks about how, despite diminished energy, he carries on sering in his parish). Other commenters are one or or the other of ex-sems, homosexuals, CINOs, Anglicans, athiests or social workers, mainly.

2:21 I don’t know how he finds time to do all the good work he credits himself with.
No, wait, you mean there’s a priest who’s actual assignment is to troll this blog?

I expect that is because he’s not allowed near any children.

If this blog was about failings in a profession (such as social workers) the members of that profession would be actively encouraged to read it to learn from it and help prevent the failings happening again. They would actively be referring to it and you would be hard pressed to avoid the blog in professional discussion.
In comparison the fact the clergy deny reading this blog is literally all you need to know about them. And the absence of professionalism or will to learn, is just the start.

Like

Well, social workersmust be slow learners. This blog occasionally references systemic failings in social services departments, yet it still goes on. The BASW told the NI Assembly that during the first lockdown, looked after children were sent, unaccompanied, to B&Bs outside the NI jurisdiction – in RoI – where they were at the mercy of random adults.

I heard a priest saying he couldn’t wait til this week was over as he was wrecked. None of you know what a graft is; standing chatting the same shite for twenty minutes a day and an odd funeral and wedding here and there that you look xtra money for. Sick of you all.

In fairness it’s a busy week for us all, and it is a relief when it’s over but a joy to be able to do.

Pat: I am very disappointed that you’ve allowed your blog for Holy Week to be dominated by repetitive, nasty, negative and demeaning commentary about bishops and priests. The same narratives have been printed and aired so often. It’s very disheartening, even today, to read the repeat vicious commentary. I would be astonished if you believed all of what you print. I give you the benefit of the doubt. But surely you must realise yourself that there’s something quite nasty, uncharitable and most un-christian to use the TRIDUUM as days to attack and condemn all clerics. Surely, as a caring pastor, in clearer, reflective moments, you must ask – is this continuum of lampooning, mockery and condemnation acceptable, especially during the TRIDUUM? I’m not asking you to stop any criticisms – your blog provides a space for expression – but during this SACRED time, is it warranted? Robert Nugent’s video which you shared yesterday was the most cynical and contemptible attack on a bishop and the clergy and by extension on all bishops, clergy and parishioners.. Quite honestly, I have lost all respect for him. Today, MMM’s use of the wird b******s about Religious Beliefs was profoundly offensive. He too is given access to a daily recitation of the same theme but today, I find it truly shocking. Pat, I wish you well. I hope your Easter celebration will be a transformative one, as I pray it will be for all who genuinely and sincerely profess that Christ is Risen, that God manifests his power over hatred, vengeance and vindictiveness. May all who profess Christ try to live in the light, hope and joy of this Paschal Feast.

Anon @ 4:31: Can you please explain how someone who sees no evidence for the validity of religious belief is being “profoundly offensive ” (your words) in describing them as a load of bollox,……particularly when he invites believers to explain or demonstrate their validity, they cannot or will not, and the clerical purveyors of such rotten goods continually demonstrate their worthlessness?
Perhaps you simplistically believe religion is so special that it must not be questioned, ……….like its clerics I suppose?

People with drink problems are very touchy when asked about it. He must have smelled it (I’m assuming you are not making this up, of course). A drunken confession is probably insincere and thus invalid.
