Joseph Stephen OβLeary is an Irish Roman Catholic theologian. Born in Cork, 1949, he studied literature and theology at Maynooth College (BA 1969; DD 1976). He also studied at the Gregorian University, Rome (1972-3) and in Paris (1977β79). Ordained for the Diocese of Cork and Ross in 1973, he was a chaplain at University College Cork (1980β81). He taught theology at the University of Notre Dame (1981β82) and Duquesne University (1982β83) before moving to Japan in August, 1983. He worked as a researcher at the Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture, Nanzan University, Nagoya (1985β86), where he later held the Roche Chair for Interreligious Research (2015β16). He taught in the Faculty of Letters at Sophia University, Tokyo, from 1988 to 2015.

It is obvious from your little letter to the ACP that you do not like this blog or its author.
Since finding that out I cannot sleep at night.
Having your approval of me is the most important thing in my life – even more important that having God’s approval.
Receiving your disapproval of me felt worse than being, apparently, automatically excommunicated, on the occasion of being raised to the Fullness of the Priesthood on May 19th 1998.
I have never fully understood “automatic excommunication”. Is it a kind of canonical masturbation?

You were ordained a priest in 1973 – three years before I was ordained.
But you seem to have spent all you life travelling the world looking into philosophical conundrums.
You were ordained to be a shepherd and a pastor after the mind and style of the Chief Shepherd and Pastor Jesus Christ.
Now I have searched the New Testament and I can’t find the words:
“Go out to the whole world and philosophise to all men and women”.
“Go and baptise all men in the name of the Heidegger, the Dumoulin and the Budda“.

I just returned from a trip to Chappell Texas I attended mass at St Annes Catholic Church Chappell Texas.This is a mega church run by 3 Priests and 5 Deacons.I could not help but think perhaps this is the future of the Church in Europe.Mass was read in English and Spanish Confessions were celebrated in public with each person confessing their sins in silence.If the church in Ireland adopted this practice perhaps the present group of Bishops and Priests would have less time to play politics with their vocations.Do we really need a church at every corner with many of its priests and deacons mired in sexual and financial scandal and the Faithful shopping around to find the SHORTEST mass and old time priests looking with nostalgia at the good old days following the monkeys code hear no evil see no evil and tell no evil

Well, all I can really object to in your remarks is the word ‘Jap’, which not even the most insensitive expats here would ever use. It is generally regarded as racist. I am running out to celebrate the Eucharist — for yes, Tokyo people have souls. I send you my sermon with best Easter prayers anad a plea that your would imitate the courtesy , tact, tolerance, and human understanding that prevail in this wonderful country:

βDo not doubt but believeβ (John 20:27) is perhaps a poor translation of βmΓͺ ginou apistos alla pistos,β literally, βdo not be unbelieving but believing.β Pistis means faith, but with a wide range of meaning, connoting faithfulness and trust.
Nietzsche mocked Jesusβs demand for faith as a sign of weakness. Countless other thinkers and writers indulge the same dismissiveness, and they enjoy a huge, often uncritical popularity among those who credit them with sophistication and wisdom.
But Jesusβs word searches the human heart far more deeply than even the canniest cynicism can.
To be sure nihilistic utterances such as those of Emile Cioran or Samuel Beckett can shake our hearts much in the way that Jobβs complaints do. But Godβs reply to Job has the same upshot as Jesusβs to Thomas: βDo you need to be fixated in an attitude of scepticism and pessimism, which you call realism? Must you forever sulk on your dungheap? Must you forever shut your ears to a voice that tells of the glory of creation, the beauty and nobility of your fellow-humans, the immortal concerns of truth and justice inscribed in your conscience?β
Faith dwells respectfully on these realities and does not wilfully cut them down to size as an illusionary lure. Fidelity to the true nature of the world and of life is not served if we refuse to celebrate the joyful and glorious as well as the sorrowful mysteries.
But of course the message of Easter is much more than fatuous advice to βlook on the bright side.β
βWe have seen the Lord.β It is fully two thousand years since the apostolic witnesses uttered these words. Why do those words still have the power to convince?
To βsee the Lordβ for Mary Magdalen, Peter, John, Thomas, and the others was not a matter of registering a curious, indeed astonishing fact. Rather it was the discovery of a new dimension of reality.
Resurrection means liberation. It is symbolized by the freedom to pass through closed doors, by chains falling off (Acts 12:7), prison gates flung open (12:10). It is enacted in an outpouring of spiritual gifts, in miracles of healing, in a new capacity for mutual love and sharing (Acts 2:44), and in an unbeatable boldness that casts out fear.
It is because people have tuned into this reality over and over again throughout historyβon hospital beds, in silent prayer, in heroic resistance, in ventures of creative charity that bear abundant fruitβthat the message, βwe have seen the Lord,β rings deep and true.
A hospital chaplain said: βI have no trouble believing in the resurrection, because I have seen it so often.β
Taking heart from all these testimonies, let us shake off the penchant to negative thinking, to needless moroseness and melancholy. Let us enlarge heart and mind in believing trust, quietly affirming every day: βHe is risen from the dead, and he is Lord.β
Then our speech will no longer be a constant stream of moaning and groaning, expletives and pejoratives that throw the gifts of the Creator back in his face. Instead our favoured exclamation will be: βAlleluia, alleluia.β

One statement of yours in particular struck me: fidelity to the ‘true’ nature of the world. What is that? I ask because the meaning is as fixed as as movable feast.
Your Pollyanna thoughts remind me of a priest’s gross insensitivity when he said, in a springtime once during which I was suffering with clinical depression and was suicidal, that it was great to be alive! He knew my suffering, because I had confided in him.
The ‘true’ nature of the world is not a fixed variable, ironically, because its meaning depends on whom is being asked.

Given the articulate elegance in some of your recent communications to brother Bishops, do you not think you would retain and build upon the tentative understanding and respect that perhaps the majority hold you had you responded to Fr Joseph in a similar vein? Thing is, in trying to discern the real Jesus we have to try and see beyond the condition of the Gospel writers, who at least to some extent, have fashioned Jesus in their image or to suit their cultural expectations, agenda or cause. My first thought is how do the Japanese understand the Cork accent? Most Irish people donβt, cant see how a crowd in the Far East are managing. βJeeesus arrived at Canaan, Boy, then performed a meeeeracle, Boyβ. βSatan was a langer, Boyβ etc. It must have made for some serious linguistic conundrums and one wonders how much wisdom the Japanese got from the Cute Hoor Cleric. Then again this is the race that still denies carrying out any atrocities in Manchuria during WWII so a Catholic priest is probably right at home. When did Joe, the ACP, or the ‘good priests’ of Ireland last issue a firm and detailed statement of reprimand to the Irish Hierarchy for covering up, and continuing to cover up, abuse, corruption and criminality, in the Irish Catholic Church. That is the obscene scandal-covering up by Bishops for colleagues in the priesthood.

If there is such a shortage of vocations why are not all these Jap Joes recalled to serve in Irish parishes. This is an affront to Irish heritage & high time for these Irish born middle class desk priests to serve the parishes that paid for their education. It would be interesting to do a census of Jap Joe types world wide & one wonders why the Irish RCC have not put this into effect to date?? Is this More moving & hiding clergy in far flung locations & why?? Why is Irish RCC unwilling to tap into this resource of experienced clergy to man Irish parishes. Is it a lifestyle choice that more privileged clergy are accommodated to pursue at their leisure overseas, another version of the Irish priests like Fitzgerald & others in Clare who summoned their bully locals to ensure priest was not moved. It says something when these priests needs are put way above the needs of ordinary parishioners.

I wonder if Joe says Mass in public? A number of the priest lecturers in Maynooth used to get very nervous on the rare occasions when they said Mass in public. Some said Mass rarely, if at all.
On one occasion, Matt O’Donnell was asked to say the Thursday Folk Mass in Junior Oratory. He got completely befuddled, said the Apostle’s Creed (!) despite it being a weekday, and froze on the spot during the final hymn. All the verses had been sung and he still stood there, so the cantors started the hymn again. Eventually the Junior Dean leaned over and told Matto that it was time to leave the sanctuary.

In Maynooth the students responsible for liturgy in a given week had the task of inviting a member of staff to say the Thursday evening Mass in the respective oratories of the college. It was light duties for the priest because they didnβt have to preach (one of the IV Divinity deacons preached). Most of the priests were glad to be asked, however, when I invited Mgr Paddy Corish, (the celebrated historian), he declined, saying, βwe get our dinner in the pros ref at that timeβ.

I will make a reference to them now: all the scandals involve adults, confirming that child sexual abuse has been nonexistent among clergy in recent years. Also the scandals are basically pharisaic scandals, vamped up by the gang here who are up to the same behavior themselves and think nothing of it (as their casual allusions to seamier aspects of gay culture show). Lastly, I think that our Savior was generally more friendly toward sodomites like the Centurion than to salemites who were in a permanent state of being scandalized. Pat Buckley is all over the place in his blunderbuss outrage and outage, sometimes calling for the strictest application of canon law, at other times denouncing it as an oppression he himself has courageously cast off; sometimes pouncing on priests for the crime of compromising albeit sexless friendship, at other times advising priests that they are doing well in maintaining a mature, discreet friendship with their boyfriends; sometimes denouncing the clergy for misogyny, at other times indulging in the vilest forms of it himself; sometimes deploring that priests are not stepping up to the plate to shore up a failing church, at other times calling for the extirpation of that church root and branch, in tones of hatred unmatched by Voltaire (who has a wonderful tribute to a good priest in his Dictionnaire philosophique) or Nietzsche (who lauds Montalembert’s Monks of the West so warmly); sometimes celebrating the rights and freedoms of his gay and lesbian brothers and sisters, at other times opportunistically exploiting a wide variety of homophobic tropes; sometimes lending support to oppressed and afflicted people, at other times pushing his victims to the brink of suicide. The poison in this blog emanates from the contradictions of its author which he seems quite unable to sort out. I do not deny that the church can be very confusing and that he has been subjected to its most confusing aspects. But it seems that from the start he was a source of aggressive and confusing behaviour himself. I once had a friendly chat with Bishop Cathal Daly in the time of Paul VI and the topic was the difficulty of remaining in touch or getting in touch with pastoral realities if one was an academic clergyman. I found him a sincere and good man and am shocked at the way he is pursued so viciously and vindictively on this blog. Pat’s motto could well be: ‘All is not lost, the unconquerable will, and study of revenge, immortal hate, and the courage never to submit or yield.’ The sort of thing that gave us the Troubles in NI. All the scandals mentioned on this blog involving adults confirms nothing about child sexual abuse existence or non-existence among clergy in recent years. What does, ” the church can be very confusing” supposed to mean? Is it a euphemism for abusive, corruption or criminality? Cases of abuse remain covered up. Whether the commentator found Bishop Cathal Daly a sincere and good man following one conversation with him is a moot point. Did Bishop Daly cover up CSA? Covering up abuse was and remains a pastoral reality.

In the case of the above, you will see the Rev. Dr. return after Postgraduate studies in Europe to either an appointment to desk-priest status for a high office, or a role lecturing in the field of religious education, I would imagine. Incidentally, why was Joe filling a lay person’s job of being a lecturer? The good thing about the priest shortage is that the parish dodgers on the Maynooth staff are gradually being replaced by lay lecturers. Though few of the Maynooth priests could survive in a parish. Imagine Paddy Hannon or Enda McDonagh as a PP?
Joe Duffy’s only friend, Mgr Brendan Devlin, asked to be put in a parish in his native Derry diocese when he retired as Professor of French in Maynooth University. Brendan hadn’t served a day in a parish. He lasted six months, before retiring back to live in the college.

In the 70s there was a famous case that went all the way to the Dublin High Court, which agreed with St Patrick’s College that priests on the staff (even on the NUI side) could be sacked by the college if they left the priesthood.

Joe OβLeary thinks that clergy sexual misconduct with adults is no big deal and a βpharisaic scandalβ. This, my friends, is a perfect illustration of the mindset of the Irish hierarchy and why they have moved to ignore, conceal, cover-up, and shut down misconduct. Money-grubbing corporations seem to have more a moral compass on these sorts of issues, as the Gers, Kirbys, Purcells in that context would be immediately dismissed for only a fraction of the behaviour they displayed as clerics and superiors/pastors.

Many clergy have been subject to abusive and un just treatment at the hands of unanswerable superiors over the years. However there are established processes in place to vindicate the rights of clerics (not accused or guilty of any particular charge). The ACP did a great disservice to that Waterford priest recently if he felt pressured into signing the licasisation petition. The most obvious advice would be to sign nothing! In fact that can be appealed in that instance, if there is no crime involved.
But leaving that aside, very often this blog assists in uncovering those things that need to be uncovered as people feel they have no where else to turn, or no expectation of justice.
A priest mentioned on the blog before, who deliberately concealed the child abuse crimes of (the former FR) Vincent Mercer OP for over 30 years, has never had to answer for his actions. Only on this blog has his misdeeds been cast into the light. He is now, it seems, coming close to going beyond the reach of earthy justice: I can only hope that the heavenly judge, from whom no secrets are hid, will impose a just sentence on him.

Pat, have you seen the many videos put up by Robert Nugent recently? His latest one evokes many questions abiut his . He justifies his videoing the Chrism Mass at St. Muiredeach’s Cathedral by saying he was asked to do so by “others”. Coward, Robert: it was a horribly mean thung to do. He also said that his home town is “demonic” because of the lack of love for the Eucharist which he has witnessed. Incidentally, he was on his way home from shopping – on a Sunday, imagine – and met “someone” who bemoaned the faithless parish. Robert stopped for 5/6 munutes to spew out, yet again, his judgment and analysis for the ruthlessness – the absence of The Latin Mass!! If only life was so easy…I deplore his extreme thumping and sermonising from his car seat. Soon his animated, swinging hands will break through his videos to exorcise the nation. His monotonous monologues are tiresome. Personally I am praying that he’ll find some self awareness and a little more humility and kindness. Just wondering if you’ve seen all recent videos.The tone is not quite right and I believe he is becoming more intolerable and unbearable in his self righteousness. He has little good or encouraging to say about priests or bishops….again, all because of the absence of the Latin Mass…without it priests are “unbelievers” and “unholy”.
