Spanish bishops refuse to participate in State-run sex abuse inquiry

bishopaccountability.org

Catholic bishops in Spain say they will not cooperate with parliamentary commission because its focus is only on sexual abuse in the Church and not in all sectors of society.

The Catholic bishops of Spain have refused to participate in the State-run, independent investigation into Church-related sexual abuse of minors.

“We want to emphasize that investigating abuse within the Church only, when it is clear that of the 15,000 cases opened in Spain, only 69 involve the Church, is a surprising decision,” said Bishop Luis Argüello, spokesman for the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE).

Bishop Argüello said the commission, which Spanish Parliament agree on in March, should carry out a broader investigation, instead.

He pointed to the one recently set up by Catalonia’s regional government, which is also investigate sex abuse committed in schools, sports centers and recreational organizations.

The Church refuses to be a “scapegoat”

Argüello, who is the auxiliary bishop of Valladolid, said society “as a whole” must become aware of “the magnitude of this problem” and avoid making Church into a “scapegoat”.

Nonetheless, he said that he and his fellow the bishops “will collaborate with the civil authorities” and open their diocesan archives, “taking into account civil and canonical legislation and the law on data protection”.

But the 69-year-old prelate said it’s his “personal” view that there is an “overestimation of what can be found in the archives”.

Spanish Parliament voted overwhelming in favor of setting up the independent commission, which was first proposed the ruling Socialist Party.

It came after the Madrid daily El Pais published an expose revealing that an estimated 1,246 children had been abused in the Spanish Church since the 1930s.

The revelations prompted the bishops, who have long been reticent on the issue, to commission their own independent audit at the end of February in order to shed light on Church-related abuse cases.

The Catholic Church in Spain has officially recognizes only 220 cases of pedocriminality over the past 20 years

PAT SAYS

“BASTARDOS” is the Spanish word for male bastards.

And the Spanish Roman Catholic bishops like their Irish cousins, are out and out bastards.

Their Mother Institution is truly an axis of evil.

They put their institution before abused children, women and men.

They cover up for their perverts, deviants, thieves, abusers and murderers and destroy and discard anyone good in the institution.

The mouth the name of Jesus Christ and blaspheme Him by their evil actions.

They have their pathetic Holy See statelet but they really exist in all the countries of the Earth.

They are as ABSOLUTELY incapable of policing themselves as we’re the Nazis and the Third Reich.

Therefore it is more important than ever that the CIVIL AUTHORITIES begin to ruthlessly hold them to account.

Some countries may have to build extra prisons to accommodate bishops and priests.

That would be an Alleluia moment for victims and survivors world wide.

I hope the Spanish lead the way with their pursuit of their bastardos.

And I hope that other nations, including Ireland follow their lead.

Ireland needs these “bastardai” dealt with.

Maybe some future meeting of the Irish Episcopal Conference will have to take place in Mountjoy Prison Dublin?

Perhaps if Their Eminences gave less impression of functioning like a criminal conspiracy, the civil authorities wouldn’t be so laser focused on them.

We all know how this will backfire in their faces as the other thousands of people abused by priests now come out of the woodwork.
There is always an upsurge in allegations when an institution hits the news like this.
Did I mention the church has learned nothing from the events of the past few decades?

12:20am. Thank you for sharing this link. Staying with Bishop Pats commentary on todays blog on the role of the civil authorities in investigating RCC related crime and wrong doing, it is very interesting to note on that first link that the Attorney General in Pennsylvania has a telephone hotline dedicated to victims of Clerical Abuse. Given that decades of abuse has remained unresolved in Ireland & elsewhere, why haven’t the governmental authorities or UN for Human Rights ordered the ultra wealthy Vatican to immediately release funds to set up this service in Ireland and elsewhere. The RCC is an entirely inhumane organisation proven in its persistent & blatant support & complicity in wrong doing at all levels.

Like

Totally agree. I suspect the answer to your question is that in addition to being a banana republic micro state it also pretends to be a religion and expects the protections of both. No other body in the world is both a state and a religion.
Frankly I think that’s in itself an indicator of criminality but no doubt Europe and the UN don’t want to appear to be ‘persecuting’ a ‘religion’.

I wonder if reluctance in investigating RCC related crime might be due to collusion between the State and Church in cover ups?

Like

I agree with the thrust of your comment +Pat. But I then think, what else can we expect?
The whole history of the RCC ‘s response to investigation of possible clerical abuse has been obfuscation, diversion and denial. They just don’t “get it”.
Significantly, while some might explain and excuse this Spanish clergy’s reaction as the genuine ignorance of hierarchs with limited experience and ability, more astute critics will point out very many instances where the prime and overriding RCC consideration has been cover-up protectionism of a self serving RCC institution now acknowledged worldwide as totally corrupt, …….and certainly very far removed from the values it professes to espouse.
Irrespective of whether it’s genuine ignorance or selfish protectionism, such actions give the RCC organisation no credit, only further derision, ……..and empty pews.

I think you’re being too kind, MMM. It’s conceivable some people wouldn’t understand safeguarding or abuse, but being well intentioned would still listen, engage and try to get it.
This, however, spells not giving a damn.

Like

@ 10:49: you make a valid point about an ethos of being ‘well intentioned.’ On the evidence, it appears the RCC has persistently NOT been well intentioned. A supercilious conviction of “always being right ” pervades all RCC clerical thinking, and guides all its behaviour.

MMM, those who abused people are bastardos. Those who covered up the abuse are also bastardos.
The independence of the Catalan people should be respected. Catalonia’s regional government are right to take the approach that they are taking.
A state run inquiry focussing solely on the Church and not on the state. 🤔 Has the state something to hide?

Like

1:26pm the cover up merchants in my opinion are arguably even bigger bastardos because they ensure that the issue of clerical abuse will never be resolved – they do even more widespread damage on a much wider scale all in name of protecting the RCC. Toxic & they truly believe themselves to be “good people doing it all for the greater good”. Professional Paedophile Protectors.

No surprise that the 69 year old Archbishop is unhappy at the Spanish State sticking its nose into Church affairs. He is old enough to remember the 1953 Concordat which was in force well into the 1970s. Section 16 guaranteed all sorts of protection to criminal clergy. Section 19 guaranteed that the State pay for the support of the clergy and tons of other Church expenses. And Section 20 provided for tax exemptions galore. Delinquent school teachers, sports coaches, etc got no such special consideration.

11:11am if sex is so important to them why the hell do they choose the Roman Catholic Church = vow of celibacy??! Plenty other options without this rule if they wish to be a cleric. No logic.

Like

They choose it, because they know it is not of God. Seriously, why else would they become priests? For holiness?

Like

10:42 Because denominations which ordain gay clergy expect them to adhere to their own liberal standards of sexual behaviour, that is, not an orgy. If you’re not interested in that and want clerical adulation while shagging anything near you, a church which pretends its clergy are celibate is exactly what you want. That’s why it has a long history of attracting psychopaths, paedophiles and other deviants like flies to shit.
In other words it’s about the pretending not primarily about the sex. Surely nobody seriously thinks more than a tiny proportion of clergy are actually celibate life long?

I do not want a untied Ireland. I do want a border poll though so NI can vote to remain part of the UK and shut Sinn Fein up. After a border poll though, I do not think we should have another one for at least a generation (25 years). We can not turn into a referendum society like Switzerland. Elections and referendums I am against, we should not allow people, who have little or no intelligence or knowledge of an election party or referendum agenda, to vote on important issues. We should all have to sit a basic politics understanding exam to be allowed to vote.

Ulster consists of 9 counties. The Ulster Unionist Council abandoned 3 counties to shore up a Unionist majority. Gerrymandering that was to persist for many decades. To right the wrongs of the gerrymandering past, the 9 counties of Ulster should get to vote on the ending of partition. If not, why not?

Oliver, if one takes the longstanding history worldwide of subjugated peoples rejection of former colonial masters, it’s obvious that the march of time will replicate the pattern in N. Ireland. The cultural identity of “Britishness” has weakened in the younger Unionist demographic, and this will continue. Irish unification will slowly evolve, largely driven by material considerations. In that respect, the ROI has a lot of catching up to achieve.

Like

Oliver, thank you for your “comfort blanket ” advice @ 6:18.
Speaking of which, I already take comfort in an appreciation of what historical precedents worldwide informs us concerning the erosion of colonial hegemony, sometimes suddenly like the Dutch fleeing Java in advance of 1942 Japanese invasion, or more gradually like the British from Kenya, Rhodesia, etc, or the French from N. Africa.
When viewed over historical time, the displacement of the gerrymandered N. Ireland Protestant hegemony albeit gradually, is gathering pace largely through demographic population shifts plus a more secular and mobile society. An understanding of these concepts is very helpful and might help alleviate displacement anxieties. Harking back to 1921 @ 6:18, a relatively brief period in historical terms , appears to ignore the inevitable reality of change.
One might reasonably ask what the founding fathers of “Northern Ireland “, Craig, Carson, Brooke etc would have thought of Sinn Fein being the largest political party in their “Protestant Parliament and a Protestant State ” (James Craig, N. Ireland Prime Minister 1921- 1940 , speaking in Parliament on 24th April 1934) , or Basil Brooke, Viscount Brookeborough’s infamous remark at an Orange 12th July celebration in Fermanagh, “I wouldn’t have a Roman Catholic about my own place.”

One of the worries of the Spanish bishops will be the role the Church played during the days of Franco. Spain has gradually been coming to terms both with those hard times and the Civil War in the 1930s. To abuse, one might need to add murder and coercion. I understand the wish of Irish nationalists who wish to join Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland, but would there really be an increase of sovereignty? You would be swapping British oversight (which includes direct, elected representation at Westminster and a generally supportive approach) for, presumably, abolition of Stormont and the overlordship of the European Union. The EU Commissioners and suzerains are unelected and it is doubtful they have any real concern for Ireland (and NI) anymore than they do for similarly sized EU nations.
So, would there be a real increase in the sovereignty of the Irish people over themselves? It seems doubtful. It is perhaps one of the grim ironies of history that, having left British dominion, the Republic of Ireland has been absorbed into the orbit of a European superstate for which no one has ever voted and only one nation has integrally left in recent times after a democratic referendum – the United Kingdom.
