A US government investigation into the dark history of Native American boarding schools has found “marked or unmarked burial sites” at 53 of them, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland has said.
Ms Haaland, the first Native American cabinet member, announced the investigation last year.
In releasing preliminary findings during a press conference in Washington, she spoke through tears and in a choked-up voice.
“The federal policies that attempted to wipe out Native identity, language and culture continue to manifest in the pain tribal communities face today,” Ms Haaland said.
“We must shed light on the unspoken traumas of the past.”
Until Wednesday, the US government had yet to provide any true accounting of the legacy of the schools, which used education to change culture so tribal land could be taken.
Families were forced to send their children to the schools.

Pat, Brian Nugent wrote a book about the graves in Tuam. Babies were not dumped in septic tank, the graves were marked at one stage until the site was redeveloped.
If you want a copy I can get it to you. The media made it look like babies were being dumped in septic tank, but the tank in question was constructed much later and bodies moved as the graveyard was redeveloped. All clearly and historically documented l.

Derek Leinster long campaigned for recognition of the Bethany Home residents or inmates. The death rate there seemed to have been rather high even allowing for the inability to deal with TB effectively and pandemics like influenza. The Penitentiary or Edgar Home did at least close in the 1920s. Ireland seems to have a backward, fund starved provision for some of the poorest and despised, in some areas, but the Church of England had similar, often called Magdelene homes and these only closed in the 70s. I see an intend to blame the Catholic Church particularly even when a good portion of these homes had no religious. The political class dislikes how lay Catholics in the past managed to frustrate their social projects. They need to solely blame the Catholic Church.
Maciel was utterly depraved in life, unrepentant at death, and his followers are of interest. Steve Skojec ran OnePeterFive, a big trad blog. He was a former Legionary and decided upon traditional Catholicism after enduring the betrayal and cultishness of the Legion and having experienced the shoddiness of mainstream Catholicism. Yet he sold it to Crisis Magazine about a year ago, and the refusal of an FSSP priest to baptise his child as the priest had not seen the family in church enough, precipitated a sort of falling out with Catholicism in general. Any story about the abuse of children from any century is morally wrong. We need to know exactly what happened, why it happened and how was it tolerated? What was the civil and religious thinking behind infant burials? Why were little innocent ones so cruelly treated? Can we ever reconcile with this legacy as a church and society? Even today children with special needs are treated appallingly and chikdren with psychiatric traits are placed in adult wards with peoole sicker than they are. And the trauma of thousands if babies being aborted is a great darkness in our way of treating the little ones…It’s not septic tanks today, it’s incinerators or buckets in sluice rooms. Bishop Pat, the North American system that was designed to āwesternise the savageā (one of several similar terms used in the timeframe) is a whole subject within itself. Entry was compulsory, photographs were taken of children on arrival, then photos at various stages for purposes of demonstration to government how their money was being spent as funding provided – so individuals were being āmade fit for civilised society. Inmates were given plenty work & chores and their education was structured to training both sexes for menial domestic and industrial and agricultural jobs. Robert, thank you for your comments. It is vital for the TRUTH to be told re: Tuam. There are so many narratives that we need clarity. Some, including Pat and his followers in this blig, alongside vehemently anti Catholic commentators and politicians have used this tragedy in a very partisan, nasty way to beat the Church. Any abuse in any era is morally wrong. But truth should not be sacrificed to further anti Catholic rhetoric.

My niece is away minding my sister at the moment. Her dyslexic daughter is with them. The church run music group have contacted the Mum telling her not to bring child back to music group because sheās no good at it. The little girl finds it very hard on account of her diagnosed ādifferenceā but she enjoyed it & had made good friends there. Some very smart kids in group, kids of accountants & the like. We will not forget this. Our entire family and network of friends are now aware. Lest we Forget. Youād miss the days when priests actually ran the parish themselves – like when I was a nipper. All we can do now is walk away – that was a very hurtful and damaging experience for a child. But sure, who are we to complain, she got off light compared to other children entrusted to church.

The vision of Mother Mary Aikenhead travelled far beyond these shores to many poorer countries where the sisters were and are at the forefront of education, health and social outreach to the poorest, especially for young women who, in some countries were denied access to education but for the good sisters. I wonder how far will the atheistic rhetoric of Stokes (and co.) go towards the building of a more just, equitable, fairer, more caring and kinder society? Apart from his Hot Press profile, what is there to see of his “amazing” outreach for the betterment of society’s ills? As is said of such critics – all talk but no action.

The Crown or the PSNI is NOT owned by the Catholic Church so they like MP’s are NOT allowed to interfere with JUSTICE.
There is NO blushes in the Archdioceses of Armagh and certainly NO injunction.
Father Aiden McCann has asked his Bishop for leave of absence and under Canon Law that has been granted.
However the Crown do not have their full case complete and it will be returning to the court in due course however Father Aiden McCann insists he is innocent of this accusation and therefore Archbishop Eamon Martin cannot do or say anything until the Crown is finished with the case.
In UK law you can only take an injunction out to stop issues however you cannot in a Criminal situation.
Father Aidan McCann is not foolish he has his “Friends” who are Canon Lawyers advising him or Archbishop Eamon would have suspended him however his faculties have been suspended while he is on leave.

Bishop Tom Dennihan will announce clerical changes in Diocese of Meath in next few weeks. He likes priests to take up new positions in July. Some priests been told to be prepared to be moved . Only one Priest been ordained this year in Meath (Navan).

I was the only Irish person at Jean Michel di Falco s Episcopal ordination in Notre Dame….I am proud of that…..he paid a high price for false accusation….like George Pell……but he had an affinity to the justice of the Gospels…..he was kind to the poor. I think of him often though I haven’t seen him in years…..now retired . When in Rome he always asked me to the table…..I entertained three French Prelates with my loose tongue and irreverence one evening..
